Christmas Trip - Day 9

Slept until 0800 - had to spend awhile cleaning the snow off my truck... Tried to locate ski slopes at Mars Hill - it was closed, though. Drove south again and had breakfast in Houghton. Decided to go over to Canada - crossed at I-95. Trouble with guards ("Why is your car registered in Virginia while your license is from Florida? And you say you drove from Massachusetts?"). Used NB-95 to get to TCH-2. Drove to Hartland to see what was purported to be "World's Largest Covered Bridge." Returned to border by same route - gas in Millinocket, ME (1215). Drove back on I-95 to Augusta in heavy snow - made it clear near Brunswick. Took ME-196, US-201 and ME-24 in effort to find Bath - no luck. Back on I-95 again - then switched to I-295. Called Kristi with the new number and figured out where she lives - it was close. Found out she has a new baby, Nicholas. We caught up on some news about old friends and it was fun. Stayed from 1730-2200 - had dinner and watched TV. Back on the road - late, but no snow. I-295, I-95 towards MA. Almost ran out of gas - looked in Salisbury, Hampton and Seabrook (all closed). Finally saved in Amesbury, MA, at 2345. I-95, I-93, MA-3, US-6 to the Cape - home at 0130. Watched movies until 0300 - then bed.

Christmas Trip - Day 8

Woke at 1200 - packed for trip. Decided to see a little bit of Maine while I am up north... Left Dennis at 1300 - used US-6, crossed at Sagamore Bridge, MA-3. In Boston at 1415 - then on US-1. Gas in Revere, MA at 1445. On I-95 after that - all the way to Maine. Tried to find phone near Augusta - and did. Called my friend Kristi - her parents said she's now in Portland. Back on I-95 all the way to Bangor. While getting gas (1915), encountered delirious woman (!!!!). Started to snow pretty hard (glad to have the 4X4). Continued north on I-95 to Canadian Border - switched to US-1 there and drove north. Radio said there will be six to ten inches of snow... In Houghton, tried to find a hotel - too expensive. Continued to Presque Isle and found one. Settled in at 2200 and watched some TV. Not sure what I'll do tomorrow, but went to bed early (for once)...

Monday, December 28, 1992

Christmas Trip - Day 7

In bed until 1200. Need to get back on regular schedule soon... Visited Aunt Eva and then drove down to Mobil to get my truck looked at - needs a tuneup. Visited Katie at her work in East Dennis (1330). Took a drive around Brewster, Orleans and Harwich. Visited Grammy (1615). Did some laundry and then went over to Johanna's - watched movies with her. Went to get Katie later and went to Pizza Hut for dinner. Visited Carolyn at work (2030). Later went to Asa Bearse House with Katie and her friends, Marcia, Amy and Tracie (until 0030). Home around 0100 and watched TV and movies until 0300.

Sunday, December 27, 1992

Christmas Trip - Day 6

Slept until 1000. Went to church at East Dennis Community Church - saw lots of old friends. Drove over to Sagamore Friendly's (US-6) to meet Dad - had some good ice cream (mmmm...). Drove together (MA-3) up to John F. Kennedy Library and met up with Katie and her boyfriend, John. Stayed there until 1530. Afterwards, took scenic route through Quincy down to Hull for dinner at John's house. Left around 1900 - easy drive. Watched some TV with Katie and Carolyn. Around 2200, drove over to Oliver's to see Bryan and watched football. Home again around 0100 - movies until 0200.

Saturday, December 26, 1992

Christmas Trip - Day 5

Slept very late - had "breakfast" around 1230... Got a little work done I brought from home - packed up presents to take back with me. Watched football for most of the afternoon. Went with Katie and Carolyn to see "Forever Young." Home around 2300 - TV and movies until 0200.

Friday, December 25, 1992

Christmas Trip - Day 4

Woke at 0900 and had breakfast with Katie, Dad, Carolyn, Grammy and Aunt Eva. Opened presents and played computer games for a few hours. Left for Gerard's at 1330. US-6 to Sagamore Bridge and his place - stayed until 1930. Katie drove my truck home. Watched TV and movies until 0200 again (need to start going to bed earlier...).

Thursday, December 24, 1992

Christmas Trip - Day 3

Awake by 1130. Lunch at Friendly's with Dad. Shopping in South Yarmouth and Dennisport. Had some problems with my credit card - took care of that as soon as we got home. Wrapped up the presents. Went over to Patriot Square to visit Carolyn at work - got rest of my shopping done. Church at 1900 at EDCC. Went home to eat a late dinner with Dad and Beth - then out to annual party at Damien's (2100-2330). Watched movies until 0200, then went to bed.

Wednesday, December 23, 1992

Christmas Trip - Day 2

On the road by 0915 - continued north on I-81 until I hit I-78. East until intercepting I-287 and then on I-80. Made it through New York City by 1245 and then got on I-95 through CT and RI. In Providence, switched to I-195. Gas in Swansea, MA, at 1545 - then on I-495 until MA-25 (Wareham). Took Bourne Bridge to cross Cape Cod Canal, then US-6 to Dennis. Home by 1715 - in time for dinner. Helped Katie set up her computer and played some games with her until bed around 0200.

Tuesday, December 22, 1992

Cape Cod Trip - Day 4

Woke up at 0815 and packed. Dad and Beth drove me over to Providence so I could catch my 1145 US Air flight. Layover at 1345 in Charlotte, NC. Switched to an earlier flight to Pensacola by waiting on standby - called June. Actually made it on the earlier flight (my bag didn't...). June picked me up and we hung around to wait for my bag (should be here at 1800). We decided to check out the mall - Andy and I played video games at the arcade. Got my bags on time and then went back to Milton. Had dinner at KFC with June and Andy. Home at 1900.

Saturday, September 12, 1992

Cape Cod Trip - Day 3

Slept until 0830. Dressed up for Dad's retirement and then drove over to Gerard's with Katie, Carolyn and John (1000). Dad had already left with Beth. Followed Gerard to Newport, RI, via US-6, MA-25, I-195 and RI-24. Had some problems with Dad's car (pops in neutral). Had lunch at McDonalds. Arrived just in time for ceremony - found the right place, though... We thought Dad retired at 1300, but the actual event didn't begin until 1500. The ceremony wasn't over until 1730. We went to a small reception then - it was good - and took photos. There was a TV behind the bar and I got to see the end of the ND-Michigan game (tied 17-17). Later went to dinner with Dad, Beth, Gerard, Grammy, Aunt Eva, Aunt Irene, Carolyn, Katie and John. After dinner, drove back to Dennis in Dad's car. Home by 2130. Called Bob and Frank and then looked for books and games in the attic. Watched "Saturday Night Live" with Katie. Bed around 0030.

Friday, September 11, 1992

Cape Cod Trip - Day 2

Woke up at 0700 to sound of construction workers in apartment next to Katie's. Tried to sleep longer, but couldn't. Played video games on Katie's computer until she woke up at 1030. Ordered Dominos pizza for lunch and waited for John (Katie's boyfriend) to come back from work. Finally left for Cape Cod at 1515. Took US-3 to I-93 - traffic was horrible. Switched to I-495 and then drove on MA-25 and US-6 to get home (arrived at 1830!). Had salad and cereal for dinner. Visited my Aunt Eva and then got to spend some time with Carolyn and Dad. Later went to mall with Carolyn to get Dad's retirement present, an engraved photo album. Dropped Carolyn off at home at 2100 and then drove over to Oliver's with Katie and John. My friend, Bryan, wasn't working tonight, though. Spent a little while there and went home at 2300. Watched "Awakenings" with Katie until 0230 - then slept.

Cape Cod Trip - Day 1

June took me to the airport at 1530. My US Air flight was supposed to go to Charlotte and then to Providence, but they cancelled it due to bad weather. Luckily, I managed to change to another aircraft - this one an American flight through Nashville (but terminating in Boston). Left a message with Dad to tell him to go to Logan. Finally got on the airplane around 1730 (Andy cried a bunch). Talked to a guy who shares mutual friends from work. Not much trouble in Nashville - on the flight to Boston by 1930. Figured out when I landed Logan (2330) that Dad wouldn't be coming to get me. Instead, my sister (Katie) and her boyfriend picked me up at 0015 and took me to Katie's apartment in Lowell. That worked out well. Played with Katie's new computer and watched TV. Had a late "dinner" around 0230 and bed at 0300.

Indiana Trip - Day 11

Got up at 0700 and packed. Still lots of snow on the ground. Woke Sarah up so we could have breakfast. She actually made me some lunch - that was nice. Took a while to clean off my truck - and I checked the four-wheel drive to make sure I could get out of town (worked good). Left Sarah's at 0800 and drove out of town past ND on US-31. Continued until I got on I-465 and drove around Indianapolis - had to change to I-70 first, then I-65 due to several closed ramps. No problems on the way down to Louisville, though. Made it past Nashville around 1400 (with the time zone change). Had some really bad rain (luckily not snow) through most of Tennessee, but made it Alabama and weather cleared a little. Good trip through Birmingham and Montgomery. Used I-65 until exit 93 - got off on US-84. Took US-31 and then AL-41 into Florida. Finally on FL-87, FL-89 and US-90. In Milton at 2000. Made a few calls, checked mail and relaxed for about an hour. Had to drive over to Pensacola to check in at work - back at house around 2230 - bed soon after.

Saturday, March 21, 1992

Indiana Trip - Day 10

Slept in until 1000. Had some breakfast and took a look at the weather outlook. I had originally planned to go back to Florida this morning, but decided to wait until this evening. Sarah suggested that we go over to Warren Dunes, so we did. Took Ironwood to US-31 and US-12 (1230). Walked on the beach, throwing stones and avoiding getting wet in Lake Michigan. Climbed a huge dune and walked in the woods on a nice trail. We started down another path - along a stream - when it really started to snow. It was probably the worst weather I've seen since I came up here. Left the dunes around 1600 and made it to Sarah's OK. Snow was really deep by the time we got there, though. Took another look at the weather and decided to stay the night. Ate dinner with Sarah and her parents - helped around the house and then sat down to watch basketball. Got a visit from Dar - he wanted to say "hi" before I left. Around 2130, the snow really started to come down again. Sarah and I spent the rest of the night watching videos (Kim and Jamie's wedding, New Hope video). Had some more good conversation - bed around midnight.

Friday, March 20, 1992

Indiana Trip - Day 9

Woke up at 0815 - drove over to meet my friend, Pastor John, at the Colonial Pancake House. Good breakfast - talked for several hours. He took me over to see the changes at New Hope Church - it is much different. It started to snow around lunch time, but I drove by my old apartment and did some shopping - I needed some more lights for the truck. Back at Sarah's house around 1300 - she hadn't arrived yet. Another guy I know from ND called around 1330 - asking if I wanted to meet him at the gym. I passed, since Sarah was supposed to be there soon. Talked with Sarah's mom and read some more. Turns out that Sarah was delayed by some weather and was going to miss dinner. That was OK, though, since I figured out my cousin, Kevin, could get together for dinner tonight. I picked him up around 1700 and we went to eat at Captain Alexander's on the St. Joseph's River. We had a nice meal and talked until 1830. Dropped him off at ND and then went back - Sarah still not home. Had another nice discussion with her parents. Sarah's mom made lemon merengue pie (mmm...) and we ate some right after Sarah got there (2030). She was tired, but wanted to go out to the movies - "Father of the Bride" was showing. It was an OK movie and we got home around 2330. Sarah fell asleep right when we got back to her house - I read until 0100.

Thursday, March 19, 1992

Indiana Trip - Day 8

Woke up at 1100. Did some laundry and then went out to get oil changed - too long a line. Bought some lights for the truck - have been "doing without" for long enough... Day was very nice - sunny and warm. Left for Kara and Caleb's house in Goshen around 1500 (used IN-23, I-80/90 and IN-15). Found a place to get oil change there. Arrived at Kara's at 1600. Helped her cook and played with her kids, Joelle (shy) and Sterling. Took Caleb out to get his car at the shop - he drove me around town and showed me where he works. Back at their house, we had a nice chat and some good chinese food they made (egg drop soup and noodles). Talked until after 2000. Drove back to South Bend and tried CB radio while on I-80/90 (someone answered!!). Used US-33/31 exit and went over to ND Campus. Visited Kevin and heard the latest news about the IV Chapter. Watched TV for awhile and made calls to old friends who are still here: Sean and Matt (my dad's friend's kid). Also called my cousin, Kevin - we'll get together for dinner tomorrow. Left the campus at 2345 - read until 0030.

Wednesday, March 18, 1992

Indiana Trip - Day 7

Kim woke me up at 0900 to give me directions to see them at the campus later. Went back to sleep until 1100 - had some breakfast and then spotted some of Kim's brownies on the table (mmm...). Drove over to U of I to meet Kim at noon. She was playing the organ at the campus chapel when I got there - sounded great. Walked with her over to the Student Union and looked around at the bookstore. Went back to their house later and had leftovers. Picked up Jamie at 1400 (his car wouldn't start again). It was raining all day, too - would have been a rough walk for him... Packed and had some more food at their house around 1500 - talked about their upcoming trip to Florida. Left town around 1530 - took US-45 to Rantoul and switched over to I-57. Used I-294 and I-80 when I got to Chicago. On I-94 towards South Bend - got off at US-20 and then on IN-2. Drove by old home - looks about the same... Looked around Notre Dame Campus - lots of new buildings. At Sarah's parents' house around 1930. Had a nice time talking with them and listening to ND playing in the NIT tournament. Sarah's dad told me about his experiences working on the Apollo project. After they went to bed (2300), I read until 0100.

Tuesday, March 17, 1992

Indiana Trip - Day 6

Alarm worked great - I was up at 0730. Called Kim and Jamie for directions to their house. Played Nintendo with Brett for a little while and then said goodbye and thanks to him and Tonya. Sarah walked by - it was much warmer today. I walked her to her Christian Marriage class (1030) and met her at the Student Union for lunch (1200). She had a break for a few hours and we went back to her apartment - met Brooke on the way. Packed up the rest of my stuff and talked with Sarah until 1530. She told me she'd be home this coming weekend, so I plan to meet up with her in South Bend (her parents said I could stay there - nice). Left town around 1600. Used IN-26, I-69, IN-38, IN-32 and finally got on I-74 near Crawfordsville. Continued to Urbana. Lost my page with the directions from earlier today, but found Kim and Jamie's anyway (lucky!). Waited for them to arrive at the house from 1745 until 1830. When they got there, we had a nice dinner. I had late classes tonight, so I watched their wedding video (starring yours truly). Called my friend Kevin, Sarah's parents and Kara. Watched TV until Kim came home (2130). Jamie came home a little later and we had a rousing political discussion. I miss the old days of this stuff!!! Found out late that Jamie's car needed a jump start - we worked on that for a little while and then pulled out the books for a big debate (free will versus predestination - wow!!!). Didn't go to bed until 0300.

Monday, March 16, 1992

Indiana Trip - Day 5

Slept until 0915 - had to wait for Brett & Tonya to get ready... Made it to Taylor Chapel service at 1000 - Sarah was already there. Followed her to class - she had a test, so I looked around in the Library. Attended class (Editorial Photo Cropping) with her at noon. Had lunch at the cafeteria. Around 1330, we walked over to Sarah's office and played Risk for a few hours - it was fun. Returned to Sarah's to meet Brooke - she had her and Sarah's cap and gown (they tried them on). We all looked at my trip albums again and Sarah showed me her portfolio. Sarah made chicken dinner for me and Brooke (2000) and we talked for several hours. Jill returned around 2200 while we were looking at pictures from Sarah's trip to London. Brett stopped by to ask me if I wanted to come by to play Nintendo, but I passed on that - we were having a good conversation. Sarah said she wanted to study a little with Jill so I watched "Northern Exposure." Later, Sarah showed me pictures of her trips to Russia and Paris. Talked until 0200 - went back to Brett's and read for a bit. I have an alarm clock now - Sarah let me borrow one (hope it helps).

Indiana Trip - Day 4

Actually woke at 0830 (despite no alarm). It was good, since Sarah wanted me to visit her church. We had to drive over to Mill Grove Methodist Episcopal Church in Hartford City - they had a nice service and church dinner. I met a lot of Sarah's friends and members of the youth group she works with. One of the kids, Moni, took us to her house for a little bit. We got back to Upland around 1400 - and I wanted a nap. Slept for a couple of hours at Brett's and then went over to Sarah's at 1630. Sarah and I went walking around campus again - but it was much colder than a few days ago. We hurried back to Brett and Tonya's - they wanted to take us out to dinner. We ate at a place called Ivanhoe's. It has great ice cream (they claim over 100 sundaes). Back at Brett's later - we rented the movie "Flight of the Intruder." Around midnight, I walked Sarah back to her apartment and then played Nintendo with Brett until 0100. Read until 0200.

Indiana Trip - Day 3

Had a good sleep - didn't wake up until 1030. Sarah had the day off, so I went over to her apartment - where she had made some pancakes. It was snowy and cold, but we decided to go exploring around the area today - several interesting people (including James Dean) lived here. Left Upland around 1430 and used IN-26 and IN-37 to get to Fairmount (Dean home). After a little bit of snooping around there, we took IN-37 and IN-28 to go to Elwood. Wendell Wilkie, an isolationist Republican from the pre-World War II era, lived at 1836 North A Street in town - we took a short tour (1600). He was interesting because he took on FDR at the height of his popularity, mostly over the issue of avoiding war at all costs. However, he was also loudly supportive of President Roosevelt after he lost and the US entered the War. He was one of these rare politicians who admitted he was wrong... Drove north from Elwood (using IN-28, IN-37, IN-9) to Roanoke to see one of Sarah's friends who lived there (Brooke). She drove us over to the mall at Fort Wayne and we met Jill there. The girls all wanted to buy some clothes, so I entertained myself in the bookstore. We got reservations for Cheddar's Restaurant but had to waste time in Toys R Us before we got a table. Dinner was great - the restaurant sings the Birthday Song using Kazoos. Conversation was good, too, and we didn't get out of there until 2130. We decided to go bowling and found a place that stayed open late. Had a good time - Sarah has a funny bowling technique... Back at Brooke's for Saturday Night Live. Later drove back to Sarah's - had to pass through Police Safety Checkpoint. Eventually back in Upland (0100). After dropping Sarah off, went to Brett's - read "Chocolate Wars" (book) until 0300.

Indiana Trip - Day 2

Slept until 1430. Sarah's roommate, Jill, made me lunch (mac and cheese - mmm...). Met Sarah's friends, Brett and Tanya. Sarah back from class at 1630 - we talked until around dinner time. We decided to eat late, so Sarah took me over to visit the Taylor campus - saw the radio station, gym, chapel, lake, Sarah's office, etc. We were able to walk everywhere and had some really good conversation. Called for pizza from Toppits ("the only pizza place in town"). Sarah took a look at photo albums from my previous trips. Time passed quickly - realized that it was 2330 when Sarah started yawning... She took me over to stay at Brett's and then went home. Brett and I stayed up late playing Nintendo and then we watched a little TV - bed at 0230.

Indiana Trip - Day 1

Left Milton at 2000. Took US-90 to FL-89, then changed to FL-87. Crossed Alabama border around 2100 - saw racoons in the middle of the road. Changed to US-31 in Brewton and later switched to US-84. Eventually on I-65 - continued to Montgomery and Birmingham. Saw huge rockets near Huntsville just after 2315. Decided to continue to Indiana (no hotel tonight!). Hardly any traffic all the way to Nashville - made it to Bowling Green by 0315. Easy drive to Louisville - crossed Ohio river at 0600 (about 600 miles in nine hours). Bypassed Indianapolis on I-465 - just missing some big construction and the beginnings of rush hour. Next on I-69 - all the way to exit 55. Saw signs for James Dean's boyhood home. Took IN-26 to Taylor University and then drove into Upland. Found Sarah's apartment without too much trouble (0845). Really tired, but stayed up for a little while to talk with her. Bed (finally!) at 1100...

Moving Trip - Day 1

Woke up at 0730 and finished packing. Got gas and cash and then drove over to the office to check out. Changed into some comfortable clothes. Left work by 0900. Stopped at a truck stop to weigh truck (want to get reimbursed!). Followed US-58 all the way to South Hill, VA - changed to I-85. Tried CB - still nothing... Saw giant peach (watertower) on the side of the highway. Passed Kings Mountain and Cowpens Battlefields. Noticed a sign for the Cape Cod Inn. Drove through Atlanta - used I-285, US-29 and GA-109. Followed I-85 to Montgomery and then switched to I-65. Continued to Evergreen, AL, and switched to US-31. In Brewton, switched to FL-87. Finally on US-90 and in Milton by 2315. Talked with Bob and Frank at the house for a few minutes. Bed soon afterwards.

Outer Banks, NC (USA)

Decided to drive down to Cape Hatteras one more time before I move - but couldn't leave until 1300. Used I-64, VA-168 (Battlefield BLVD) and NC-168. Played with CB radio. Drove out to Nags Head and followed US-158 out to Cape Hatteras National Seashore entrance. Very windy, but sunny and warm. Found a broken seawall on the way down to the lighthouse. Went to visitors center and watched surfers. Around 1700, headed back towards Norfolk. Followed US-158 and noticed the Wright Brother's memorial - stopped for photos. Went back on NC-168 and tried CB radio again (still won't work...). Visited my boss, Melissa, in Chesapeake one more time. They took me out to dinner at the local Drafthouse (1900). Watched "The Last Boy Scout" and then went back to pack at my apartment. Bed around 2330.

Virginia Battlefield Trip - Day 3

Up at 0815. Left to tour battlefield at 0845. North on VA-24 - found Appomattox Courthouse village. All buildings closed, though! Still walked around with park map and found McClean house where surrender occurred. Ran out of film, so headed back into town to get more. Explored near park and found home of the inventor of the banjo! Back on US-460 after more photos (1000). Stopped at Sayers/Sailors Creek Battlefield on the way home. On VA-307 and US-360 until near Richmond. Changed to VA-10 and then doubled back when I saw a sign for a new part of I-295. Crossed James River again and got off on VA-5. Getting very cold! Toured Richmond Battlefield Park - including Fort Johnson, Fort Harrison, Fort Hoke and Fort Brady (1300). Used I-295 and went to Petersburg. Found Battlefield just after changing to VA-36. Saw visitor's center show (good) and then walked around: Battery #9, Fort Stedman, Crater Battle Site (Union soldiers dug a tunnel under Confederate lines and then set off a huge explosion - everyone so surprised it worked that nothing was actually accomplished in the confusion!). Took roads on the south side of the James River to get back to Norfolk. Saw lots of huge mansions and peanut farms. On US-460, US-58 and I-64 back to apartment. Home at 1745.

Virginia Battlefield Trip - Day 2

Woke at 1100. Met Dave's family and had a nice breakfast. They thanked me a lot for bringing Dave home - he has been gone for awhile. Left around 1230 and drove out on I-495 until I reached I-66. Got off at US-29 so I could located the sites of the First and Second Bull Run (Manassas) battles. Didn't have a good battlefield map and missed a few important places - finally found visitor's center (1345). Saw movie and good presentation - then walked around. First Battle sites: Stone Bridge. Second Battle sites: Chinn Ridge, Hazel Plain, Fletcher Webster's Memorial, Battery Heights. Left after about an hour- drove south on US-29. Came upon a lady with a broken down car - she needed a ride. Her name was Susan and she asked me to take her to her parents home just down the road. Her father turned out to be an airplane wing-walker and I got a good look at their plane and some videos of the family taking part in a "Flying Circus." They gave me tickets they said were good at any of their future performances. Left around 1530 and continued south on US-29. Eventually came across Liberty University in Lynchburg. Called Johanna, but she wasn't in town. Decided to continue to Appomattox. Took US-460 and got hotel (Travelers Inn, 1900). At dinner at Subway and then explored town. TV until 2300 - then bed.

Saturday, February 15, 1992

Virginia Battlefield Trip - Day 1

Left Norfolk at 2200. Very rainy. Dave paid for my fillup and we headed up to DC on I-64, I-295, I-95 and I-495. He lives in Bethesda, so I had been in his town before. He actually lived really close to Tori's. When we got to his place, he offered me a room (my regular hotel was probably full by this time - 0145...). Decided that I'll take a look at nearby Civil War Battlefields for the rest of the weekend (President's Day!). Bed at 0230.

Househunting Trip - Day 10

Woke up at 1100 and packed. My flight was late this afternoon, so watched TV and even went to see an early movie ("Wayne's World"). At Bob's apartment again, had Dominos for lunch and then got dressed. Bob took me to the airport at 1700 - but my flight was cancelled! Luckily, there was another one across town and I made it just in time for my flight back to Norfolk (left at 1845). Rain started as we took off (lucky me - first time all trip!). Arrived back in Virginia Beach at 2015 - my car over in Norfolk. I was sitting in the terminal, waiting for a taxi, when one of the other passengers (Dave) said he wanted to get up to DC. I offered to drive him (since it is the weekend). He was really grateful and paid for the cab to my car. Then we made a quick stop at my apartment so I could get a few things for the trip.

Househunting Trip - Day 9

Up at 0715 - going to work with Bob again. At his office at 0745. Read newspaper and checked out books on T-34. Had lunch at TD Hoops and then went over to F-18 simulator. Once inside, flew in a huge dome. Got to shoot down another aircraft and flew head-to-head with Bob (he shot me down three times). Figured out that I could only keep him from getting me at military power (the sim instructors were pumping fuel into my plane throughout or I would have run out of gas...). Left around 1400 and went back to Bob's (nap from 1430 to 1700). Watched TV and "No Way Out." Then watched "Kindergarten Cop" while Bob butchered dinner - we didn't eat much... Went out to Jax Beach around 2300 - started at Ragtime Tavern. Had late night snack at Taco Bell (0045). Back to Ragtime but people had all left (boring) - then went to Baha's (more fun). Stayed until it closed and then went back to Bob's apartment. Watched TV (should have gone to bed) but ended up watching "Life of Brian" from 0200 to 0400. Then slept.

Thursday, February 13, 1992

Househunting Trip - Day 8

Up at 0720 to go to work with Bob. Took tour of his office - lots to see and met lots of people. Went over to training wing to get a flight suit - they had one. Learned about the T-34 and tried on flight equipment. Lunch at Ace's (buffet). Looked into flights back to Norfolk and found one on Saturday. Went back to Bob's office with plans to fly F-18 simulator but learned that I could go flying instead! At 1300, Kempel took me up and we flew south towards St. Augustine. Flew over Lake George - he let me have the controls and we did some simulated runs on targets in the Pine Castle MOA. He demonstrated aileron rolls, barrel rolls, 1/2 Cuban Eights, loops, wingovers and Slit-S. He even showed me a simulated emergency landing. Great time!! Home by 1630 after some touch and gos. Had dinner (shrimp) at Bob's again (1830). Beers at Bennigans around 2230 and then went to see "Terminator 2." A little indoor workout at 0100. Bed at 0215.

Wednesday, February 12, 1992

Househunting Trip - Day 7

Slept until 0730 - called Bob to make sure about when we would be leaving for Jacksonville. Ended up leaving town around 0900. I-110 to I-10 and played with Bob's radar detector. At lunch east of Tallahassee (1345). Girls passed us in a jacked up pick-up, waving at us... In Jax by 1530. Watched Olympic hockey at Bob's apartment and took a nap (1630-1730). Went to Jax Athletic Club for awhile - ran on treadmill and biked in a computer race (big screen). Went back to Bob's and he made Chicken Rice for dinner. Ate while watching "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey." More TV until 2330 and did some pushups and situps. Worked out money for new house. Bed at 0100.

Tuesday, February 11, 1992

Househunting Trip - Day 6

Up at 0830 - called Bob. Left at 1000 to pick up Frank - he wanted to change our lease a bit to include some other details (who cares?). He couldn't get out of work, so Bob and I picked up the paperwork and brought it to him to sign. Went back to new house and had a home inspection done (finished at 1130). Lunch at Wendy's. Got a haircut. Finally got call back on new job (none available, though). Took a look at the aircraft near our new place - it won't be long!! Wanted to go swimming, but pool is closed until May. Drove back over to Perdido Bay on the way back to the hotel - Frank finally done with work around 1630. Watched TV until 1800. Had dinner at Country Buffet on Navy BLVD. Got lease paperwork finalized around 2000. Went to Cordova Mall and walked around for a bit - only one movie showing ("Grand Canyon") but we decided to see it. Done around 2300. Packed before bed.

Monday, February 10, 1992

Househunting Trip - Day 5

Woke at 0845 (Bob called...). Decided to go golfing. Found a good course with good price for all-day golfing. Rented clubs and practiced putting for a bit - then started playing at 1000. Bob and I kept laughing to each other all day because we ended up golfing with a guy who looked like Jonathan Winters - even his mannerisms. Bob shot a 96 on our first 18 and I shot a 101 (finished at 1300). Had lunch at Hardees. Started on another course (place has 72 holes) around 1400. It was great: no line, no waiting. Got through course at a nice pace. I shot 95 and Bob a 98 and we finished at 1700. Turned in clubs and went back to hotel. Tried again to call about a potential job in the area - no luck. Was going to go out for dinner but guys next door had pizza and beer and had me over for that (nice of them). Called Bob and Frank to see about later plans - they had none. Ended up staying in and watched more TV (Tyson trial on - and Winter Olympics). Reviewed some stuff to make sure I could leave town on Wednesday - bed at 2245.

Sunday, February 9, 1992

Househunting Trip - Day 4

Up at 1000 and took Bob's camaro for a drive around town. Only 32 minutes from work to the new house using Barrancas, Garden, I-110, I-10 and Avalon BLVD. Explored other routes (through Baghdad). Drove east on FL-87 and then south towards the beach. Took FL-399 on the peninsula and then drove west along the water - found US-98 and went over to Gulf Breeze (1230). Witnessed big accident just before bridge to Pensacola - stopped to help. Drove back to hotel and met up with Bob and Frank - watched TV. We went together to look around on Perdido Key again - had lunch at KFC. Went over to Pensacola Naval Aviation Museum - it was interesting. Back at hotel around 1630 - went running again (this time with Bob). We got cleaned up and then drove back to Milton to sign the lease and figure out living arrangements - picked my room. Our house is on stilts! Called Dad to tell him the news. Dinner at Taco Bell (2030). Went over to Frank's to drop his car off and then drove back to Pensacola (110 miles per hour on bridge in Bob's car!). Watched movie "Medicine Man" and then dropped Frank back at his house (2330). Drove back to hotel on back roads. Watched TV until 0045.

Saturday, February 8, 1992

Househunting Trip - Day 3

Up at 0800. Called Bob and he came over to see what Frank and I had done yesterday. Bob drove us over to Frank's and we looked at some places on the way. At Frank's at 1000 - he was on the phone until 1130 (!!!). Had lunch at McDonalds. Drove over to a place on Pebble Ridge we had seen yesterday - not furnished (we'll wait a little longer to see if we can find one...). Explored Milton some more and then saw another place on Pond Creek (it was OK and we could move in right away). We all decided this was the place - the landlord even gave us the keys! Returned to Frank's and called Shannon and Fred to find out about the night life around here. Drove back to Pensacola around 1800. Left hotel again at 2000, looking for a restaurant - ate at Greek Pizza restaurant and then drove over to Seville Quarter (seven bars in one!). Walked around and had fun - saw lots of rowdy people. There until 0030 - Frank drove us home. Watched TV with Bob until 0100. Bob said I can borrow his car tomorrow. Debated about going to church, but I don't have anything good to wear for that...

Friday, February 7, 1992

Househunting Trip - Day 2

Up at 0900. Had to stop by the hospital to work out some details on my medical record before I come down here - don't want to be disqualified before I even start! They helped me and said everything would be good. Tried to get an early transfer and temporary job - even an early class date (not looking good). Waited for Frank for awhile - he didn't show. Went over to the housing office for more information (could help later...). Frank finally showed up and we took I-110 and I-10 over to Milton - checked out their housing office too. Frank took me over to his place and we called several of the people who had homes for rent. Drove around Milton and Pace looking at the quality of places available (1600-1730). Even looked in Baghdad on Garcon Boulevard. Took US-90 back to Pensacola to check distance/time. (Dinner at Pizza Hut.) Did some more home searching in the paper - done with that at 2230 - Frank left. Spent some time watching TV - called Bob's to see if he was enroute. He called back at 2300 and said he was in town. Went to bed at 2330.

Thursday, February 6, 1992

Househunting Trip - Day 1

Got up at 0800 and packed. Heard about a flight to Florida, but I had to wait on Standby at the Norfolk Terminal. It actually showed up and we left around 1115. Flew down to Florida and made one stop near Fort Walton Beach before we got to Pensacola (1400 with the time zone change). Met some guys who gave me a ride to the hotel - they told me where we should live (Perdido Key...). Read up on Pensacola in my room from 1500-1630. Called Frank later and got ahold of him. Went running just before sunset. Watched TV and met some people in the lobby - more opinions on where to live... Frank called back just before dinner and came to pick me up - he has been looking around for a place already. Ate at McDonalds and drove around on Perdido Key for a little bit. Back at the hotel at 1945. Watched TV and felt tired at 2030 - bed early...

Ski Trip - Day 4

Left hotel around 0930 - drove over to New Market Battlefield. It was an interesting place - I had no idea that they used VMI cadets to fight in a battle there. After an hour driving through the park, stopped at another visitor's center. Found out some more good information about the area - hope to return in warmer weather. Used US-211 to get back to Skyline Drive. Drove along the Appalachian Trail for awhile. Picked up some trail hikers around 1100. Decided to do some hiking on my own. Hiked short sections of the AT near Big Meadows and enjoyed a walk on the Dark Hollow Falls Trail (about 40 minutes walk). Met Ranger. Saw a deer off the trail just before getting back in my car. Drove south on Skyline Drive again. Stopped to hike a short section of the AT near Milam gap and then walked on Bear Fence Mountain Trail later (20 minutes walk). Reached end of Skyline Drive around 1430. More information at Ranger Station and Visitor's Center on I-64. Drove next to Charlottesville - changed to US-29 and looked around the city. Checked out UVA (I wanted to go there when I was applying to colleges...). Stumbled across Monticello - but determined it was too late and too expensive. Also located Ashlawn (President Monroe's home) near VA-20 and VA-53. Explored more of the area - hoping to catch a glimpse of Jefferson's home (no luck). Took Jefferson Highway back to I-64 (1600). Drove back to Norfolk (took I-295 around Richmond). Home at 1815.

Sunday, January 19, 1992

Ski Trip - Day 3

Woke at 0730 - ready for skiing. Drove from hotel on US-11 - then took I-81 (0815). Drove down to US-33 and drove East to Massanutten. Got lift ticket and rented skiis there (0900). They had one intermediate slope open - and two beginner slopes. Met lots of interesting people on the lifts - one guy was a poultry farmer. He told me all about the area and what kind of jobs there were for people here. Skied from 0900 to 1430 without a break. Had late lunch and had some beer by the fire. Tried to go skiing around 1530, but it was too crowded. Decided to take a break, so I left the skiis behind. Took US-33 to Shenandoah National Park - drove for awhile on Skyline Drive. Got maps for a return visit - talked to Ranger. Returned to Massanutten Lodge around 1700 - lines gone! Trails were icier, but the lights were on. Had a great time for over an hour - ice made it harder on the intermediate trail. "Bunny Slope" fine, though. Around 1815, went back down the mountain and had dinner in New Market (Battlefield Restaurant) at 1900. Met owner, who told the story of the town of New Market and real estate situation. Back the hotel around 2000. Called Carolyn and watched TV. Bed kind of early...

Ski Trip - Day 2

Woke up at 0800 - left by 0900. Decided to look around Maryland for Civil War stuff. Took I-270 to the west until reaching MD-109. Took back roads to Sugarloaf mountain and then drove to the top. Not in any particular hurry, so explored more back roads (including MD-95, MD-28). Eventually on US-15 - crossed Potomac and took some photos. Got off at MD-464 and drove to MD-17 - county roads until US-40 (ALT). Found my self in suburbs of Frederick. I've been using a three year old atlas - it listed several ski areas near there (I want to ski tomorrow). When I asked for directions to Braddock Heights ski area, though, I learned it has been closed for several years. Took US-40 back to I-270. Took it to MD-17 and then realized I had driven in a complete circle... Tried to back-track on more back roads (principally MD-67). Saw Appalacian Trail. Took US-340 and got off on more back roads. The atlas doesn't have enough county roads on it - and it led me to ANOTHER circle. Back on MD-67 - and on track. Stopped to see several monuments to Lee's campaigns (SEP 1862). Finally located the Antietam Battlefield (not my original destination) - just off MD-34. Toured Battlefield and enjoyed the movie at the visitor's center (1230). Back on road again at 1345 - I decided to stop wasting time and head out to the ski areas in the Shenandoah Mountains. Took MD-34 to WV-45, then US-11. Got on to I-81 in Martinsburg, WV. Bought groceries and film nearby. Drove back into Northern Virginia (stopped at visitor's center for ski information). Took I-81 to Mount Jackson - wanted to see Shenandoah Caverns, but too expensive and too late. Back on US-11 to New Market - got a hotel in town (1630). Explored mountains nearby on US-221 - looking for Mount Run Ski Area. Had dinner at New Market Cafe (1730). Back at motel and talked with proprietor - he recommended Mount Massanutten. Watched some TV and then went to bed.

Friday, January 17, 1992

Ski Trip - Day 1

Left Norfolk around 1800. Took I-64 (lots of traffic!). Finally made it to I-295 and to Mechanicsville (1930). Followed I-95 and then took I-495 around the city. Off at Bethesda (Wisconsin Avenue) at 2115. Tried to get a room at my usual place - no room tonight. Called Tori - she offered to let me stay for the night. Had dinner with her and her roommates - watched movies until after 0100.
