Ski Trip - Day 4

Left hotel around 0930 - drove over to New Market Battlefield. It was an interesting place - I had no idea that they used VMI cadets to fight in a battle there. After an hour driving through the park, stopped at another visitor's center. Found out some more good information about the area - hope to return in warmer weather. Used US-211 to get back to Skyline Drive. Drove along the Appalachian Trail for awhile. Picked up some trail hikers around 1100. Decided to do some hiking on my own. Hiked short sections of the AT near Big Meadows and enjoyed a walk on the Dark Hollow Falls Trail (about 40 minutes walk). Met Ranger. Saw a deer off the trail just before getting back in my car. Drove south on Skyline Drive again. Stopped to hike a short section of the AT near Milam gap and then walked on Bear Fence Mountain Trail later (20 minutes walk). Reached end of Skyline Drive around 1430. More information at Ranger Station and Visitor's Center on I-64. Drove next to Charlottesville - changed to US-29 and looked around the city. Checked out UVA (I wanted to go there when I was applying to colleges...). Stumbled across Monticello - but determined it was too late and too expensive. Also located Ashlawn (President Monroe's home) near VA-20 and VA-53. Explored more of the area - hoping to catch a glimpse of Jefferson's home (no luck). Took Jefferson Highway back to I-64 (1600). Drove back to Norfolk (took I-295 around Richmond). Home at 1815.

Ski Trip - Day 3

Woke at 0730 - ready for skiing. Drove from hotel on US-11 - then took I-81 (0815). Drove down to US-33 and drove East to Massanutten. Got lift ticket and rented skiis there (0900). They had one intermediate slope open - and two beginner slopes. Met lots of interesting people on the lifts - one guy was a poultry farmer. He told me all about the area and what kind of jobs there were for people here. Skied from 0900 to 1430 without a break. Had late lunch and had some beer by the fire. Tried to go skiing around 1530, but it was too crowded. Decided to take a break, so I left the skiis behind. Took US-33 to Shenandoah National Park - drove for awhile on Skyline Drive. Got maps for a return visit - talked to Ranger. Returned to Massanutten Lodge around 1700 - lines gone! Trails were icier, but the lights were on. Had a great time for over an hour - ice made it harder on the intermediate trail. "Bunny Slope" fine, though. Around 1815, went back down the mountain and had dinner in New Market (Battlefield Restaurant) at 1900. Met owner, who told the story of the town of New Market and real estate situation. Back the hotel around 2000. Called Carolyn and watched TV. Bed kind of early...

Ski Trip - Day 2

Woke up at 0800 - left by 0900. Decided to look around Maryland for Civil War stuff. Took I-270 to the west until reaching MD-109. Took back roads to Sugarloaf mountain and then drove to the top. Not in any particular hurry, so explored more back roads (including MD-95, MD-28). Eventually on US-15 - crossed Potomac and took some photos. Got off at MD-464 and drove to MD-17 - county roads until US-40 (ALT). Found my self in suburbs of Frederick. I've been using a three year old atlas - it listed several ski areas near there (I want to ski tomorrow). When I asked for directions to Braddock Heights ski area, though, I learned it has been closed for several years. Took US-40 back to I-270. Took it to MD-17 and then realized I had driven in a complete circle... Tried to back-track on more back roads (principally MD-67). Saw Appalacian Trail. Took US-340 and got off on more back roads. The atlas doesn't have enough county roads on it - and it led me to ANOTHER circle. Back on MD-67 - and on track. Stopped to see several monuments to Lee's campaigns (SEP 1862). Finally located the Antietam Battlefield (not my original destination) - just off MD-34. Toured Battlefield and enjoyed the movie at the visitor's center (1230). Back on road again at 1345 - I decided to stop wasting time and head out to the ski areas in the Shenandoah Mountains. Took MD-34 to WV-45, then US-11. Got on to I-81 in Martinsburg, WV. Bought groceries and film nearby. Drove back into Northern Virginia (stopped at visitor's center for ski information). Took I-81 to Mount Jackson - wanted to see Shenandoah Caverns, but too expensive and too late. Back on US-11 to New Market - got a hotel in town (1630). Explored mountains nearby on US-221 - looking for Mount Run Ski Area. Had dinner at New Market Cafe (1730). Back at motel and talked with proprietor - he recommended Mount Massanutten. Watched some TV and then went to bed.

Ski Trip - Day 1

Left Norfolk around 1800. Took I-64 (lots of traffic!). Finally made it to I-295 and to Mechanicsville (1930). Followed I-95 and then took I-495 around the city. Off at Bethesda (Wisconsin Avenue) at 2115. Tried to get a room at my usual place - no room tonight. Called Tori - she offered to let me stay for the night. Had dinner with her and her roommates - watched movies until after 0100.
