San Diego, CA (USA)

Woke up early. Checked out of the Navy Lodge and departed NAS North Island.  Made sure to make a few stops for souvenirs. The best location, I've found, is the Old Ferry Landing Shopping Center - bought some great stuff at Captain Coronado's (1050). Got gas at the MCX Minimart (1245), dropped off my rental car at the Enterprise desk (1250) and caught my flight from San Diego back to Atlanta. Made good time.  After arrival at Hartsfield, I didn't have any issues retrieving my car from the long term parking lot (2315L) or driving home (arrived just before midnight).  Interesting trip!

San Diego, CA (USA)

Last day of class (we were busy from 0830-1100). Afterwards, I ate lunch (Hunan Chicken) at the NASNI Bowling Center (1300L). Spent the rest of the day at the HUGE family history library run by LDS. It was amazing how much information was available! Wish this had been here when we lived here before...  Staying at Navy Lodge (NAS North Island).

Temecula, CA (USA)

Class ended at around 1300 today! Took a couple of my classmates up to Temecula afterwards to show them some of the Wineries. We spent a few hours looking around and we visited Wilson Creek - the place I really like. This time, I joined the wine club (might as well - it could save me a little money each time I come here!). After this, we drove over to Julian. It was amazing how much damage the area had sustained because of the recent fires - lots of places burned out! Had dinner at the Julian Cafe, including root beer in cowboy boot glasses and great apple pie. Drove back to NAS North Island in the dark.  Staying in the Navy Lodge (on the beach).

Long Beach, CA (USA)

[no class today] Got gas at around noon at the Exchange on North Island and then drove up to see Mary and Leo in Long Beach. It was good to be able to visit with them! Caught a football game (NFL Playoffs) and chatted most of the afternoon. Later, went out to dinner. Drove back to the NAS North Island Navy Lodge in the evening...

Mount Palomar, CA (USA)

[no class today] Had time to drive up to Mount Palomar with my classmates - it has been awhile! This time, the weather was great and we could see out towards the ocean on the way up the mountain. The observatory was open and we walked around inside. Enjoyed the weather until sunset. Back to the NAS North Island Navy Lodge just after dark.

San Diego, CA (USA)

Class from 0830-1500. Drove up north of Miramar to visit a Family History Center - found a lot of cool things! They told me about a huge new LDS library back where I-15 and I-8 meet (near our old Kensington home!). I'll have to check that out later on the trip...  Staying at Navy Lodge (NAS North Island).

San Diego, CA (USA)

[Advanced Officer Leadership Training Course]  Up early so I could get to the Hartsfield airport.  Parked in the long term lot and headed to the Terminal.  After getting through security, I got aboard my flight and left Atlanta. Arrived in San Diego in the early afternoon. The final approach was interesting - there seemed to be buildings on both sides of aircraft as it was coming in to land... After getting off the plane, I finally got my rental car (it was NOT an easy pickup) at the Enterprise desk (1100L).  On the way to Coronado, I stopped by the San Diego City Library to do a little genealogy research - I'm glad that it is open on the weekend!  After some productive work there, I drove to a nearby Commissary to pick up some dinner (1720L).  Finally, I NAS North Island and checked into the Navy Lodge, located on the beach!  For the rest of the evening, I ate my dinner and relaxed in the room.  I also did some prep for the course (starts in the morning).
