[left Rochester, MI and drove (via Detroit/Windsor Border Crossing ?) through Ontario to Buffalo, NY - stopped at Niagara Falls (which side?) - drove on US-20 to Darien Center State Park (NY), where we spent the night]

[(probably visited the Corn Palace) - drove from Mitchell, SD (via I-90) towards the east - (backroads to  De Smet - visited some Laura Ingalls Wilder sites at the "Little Town on the Prairie") - more I-90 - drove all the way to Cascade Mountain, WI, where we spent the night]

[(started day in Rapid City, SD) - Bear Country USA - Dinosaur Park of Rapid City - continued east on I-90 - stopped at Wall Drug - more I-90 - spent the night in Mitchell, SD - (Mom's notes say "RAIN")]

[drove east from Greybull, WY (US-14, I-90) to Black Hills of South Dakota - (probably stayed overnight in Rapid City, SD; Mom's notes say "spent the night at ...")]

Summer Family Vacation - Day 38

[drove south towards Yellowstone National Park - (Mom's notes say "spent the day there - saw Old Faithful, moose, elk, earthquake deforestation area, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone") - drove out of park to the east (via US-14) - spent the night in Greybull, WY]

Summer Family Vacation - Day 37

[(left Wallace, ID in the morning) - drove east across Montana (I-90) - (did we detour to Helena, MT ?) - (back on I-90) - visited Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park and then stopped for the night at a nearby KOA (Three Forks, MT at junction of US-287 ?)]

Summer Family Vacation - Day 36

[drove north and east along the Columbia River Gorge - made our way to Spokane - drove into Idaho and stopped to visit Couer d'Alene - (I believe we then drove into Montana and stopped at the town of Wallace, ID; Mom's notes say "overnight east of Couer d'Alene")]

[stayed late at Mom's/Dad's friend's (Barbara W.) house - left (1530) to drive to Gladstone, OR (Portland area) - spent the night at Kent S.'s house]

[we left Eugene in the morning and drove west to the Oregon Coast - visited Sea Lion Caves - spent time at Heceta Light Beach - passed Cape Perpetua - then drove east to Salem, where we spent the night with another of Mom's/Dad's friends (Barbara W.)]

Summer Family Vacation - Day 33

[ate breakfast with one of Dad's/Mom's friends (Dick R.) - walked around on the University of Oregon campus - we went to a Marionette show - we ate dinner at Pietro's - spent night in Eugene]

Summer Family Vacation - Day 32

[drove from Adin, CA (via CA-299 and CA-139 ?), through the Modoc National Forest, to Lava Beds National Monument - (route uncertain - probably passed through Klamath Falls, OR and got on US-97) - (my mom's notes say "skipped Crater Lake") - got on OR-58 - stopped at Odell Lake and then drove over the Cascades to Eugene, OR - visited University of Oregon (my mom's notes say "stayed overnight in Carson Hall")]

Summer Family Vacation - Day 31

[drove from Vacaville, CA (via I-505 and I-5 ?) until we reached Red Bluff, CA - from there, we drove (via CA-36 and CA-89 ?) to Lassen National Park - we then drove north (via CA-89 and CA-299 ?) and spent the night in Rush Creek (east of Adin, CA)]

Summer Family Vacation - Day 30

[drove north to San Francisco, CA (routing uncertain) - visited Fisherman's Wharf, took a Cable car ride - we visited Muir Woods (it appears we would have had to cross the Golden Gate Bridge to reach it) - we later drove to Vacaville, CA (routing uncertain), where we spent the night]

Summer Family Vacation - Day 29

[my mom took us on a tour of Palo Alto - we saw her high school, homes she'd lived in, etc. - we stopped to visit some of her friends (e.g., Nancy N.) and family (Pat and Maureen) - stayed overnight in Palo Alto again]

Summer Family Vacation - Day 28

[after nearly three weeks of visiting, we said goodbye to Aunt Nelle and Uncle Terry and left Granada Hills (San Fernando Valley) - drove north, along the California Coast (US-101 and CA-1) until we reached Santa Cruz - we then headed inland (on CA-17 and US-101 ?) - in the evening, we arrived in Palo Alto (where my mom grew up) and spent the night there]

[our family went to the San Diego Zoo - (uncertain memory - I have a post card from Sea World but I'm not certain that it went with this trip) - when we returned to Gregg and Cheryl's, we had a big cookout with many of my dad's friends]

[drove from Lordsburg, NM (via I-10) to Tucson, AZ - stopped at Colossal Cave and Saguaro National Monument - stopped to visit Uncle Joe and Aunt Helen - (memory uncertain - I have a recollection of meeting some young people who told me it was 110 degrees in the shade - that really left an impression on me) - after saying goodbye, we continued west on I-10 (crossed desert at night) - spent the night (arrived extremely late?) in Indo, CA]
