Paris, VA (USA)

Got up around 0530 (tough, because of the previous night), packed quickly and drove out to the AT trailhead west of Purcellville on VA-7. I didn't have to stop for almost any lights on the way (miracle) and made it right at 0700, as planned. I'd been waiting to complete this section of the AT since late July ("near death" experience). This was the last part of a longer 154 mile section, extending from northern Shenandoah NP to northern Michaux SF. Thanks to a generous ride from my friend, Lee, I was able to hike the eight peaks that fell in quick succession between Ashby Gap and the Bears Den Rocks without a backtrack. The weather was pleasant but there was a cold winter wind to contend with all day. In addition, the walk was accompanied by the disconcerting sound of old trees creaking to their breaking point. Saw just a few people today: one lady ("Tree Hugger") and her dog, who was training on this section for a through hike (and lamented release of recent hiking movies); a teenage couple, who were startled when I interupted their canoodling ("I like your hat"); a couple in their 20s who apparently took a wrong turn into the Rollercoaster area; and an older man who seemed to be hiking the area for fun. When I reached Bear's Den Rocks, it was great to know I was on the home stretch - but it got windier and colder. Finished at my car well ahead of my own schedule. It took me six hours but I'm proud to say that I didn't need to stop very often. Could not have done this nine months ago... I conquered the Rollercoaster! Drive home (VA-7 to I-495) took much longer but still at the house by 1500. AT today = 11.34 miles / Grand Total = 280.81 miles.
