Woodbridge, VA (USA)
Mollie and I ate breakfast after she woke up (0900) and then we cleaned up the apartment. Mollie watched Netflix shows for most of the morning and ate a late lunch. At some point, Mollie convinced her mother to let us borrow Frosty for the night. At about 1400, we went to get him and then we spent time with him at my apartment. I got ready to go down to Woodbridge to watch the CFP Semifinal game and for a New Year’s Eve Party and made sure that Mollie was OK staying at home with the cat. After I left (1445), she contacted me (text, phone) about strange noises in the apartment above and because the wireless router kept failing (I helped her fix it over the phone). She made herself dinner without incident. Meanwhile, I went to the party with Kelly (1730) and checked in on Mollie every hour or so. Because of the bad cell signal where I was, Mollie used Instagram, Snapchat (Kelly's) and Facebook IM to keep in touch with me. She seemed to enjoy herself and so did I. Stayed at the Brew Republic New Year's Eve party until after midnight and then drove home (arrived at 0100) to find that Mollie had just gone to bed.

Alexandria, VA (USA)
I teleworked in the morning while Mollie slept until 0900. I called Jerome "Buddie" Ford Nature Center to get Mollie signed up as a volunteer (we'd researched this previously but never been able to make it happen). The call was relatively successful but I wasn't sure if Mollie would actually be allowed. Mollie read and watched YouTube videos until noon and then we ate lunch. We cleaned up the apartment afterwards (especially Christmas decorations) and later ran several errands. At Mollie's request, we drove to Nicky's to pick up their dog, Bear. We took him on a walk at Huntley Meadows, starting at 1515. It was fun to hang out with Bear but he proved he had not received much training - he even had trouble with other dogs and got off the leash once. I was concerned because Nicky had hesitated to let us take him... When we were done (1630), we dropped off Bear at his house and went shopping. We were home by 1715 and we ate dinner by candlelight. We watched movies until bed time (2200).

Great Falls, VA (USA)
Weather wasn't cooperating, but we decided not to stay inside. Instead, we drove to Great Falls National Park for some exercise and nature. Our adventure started on the Virginia side of the Potomac. First, we got a stamp for Mollie's National Park Passport book. We then hiked north to the aqueduct dam (near Riverbend Park). The highlight of the morning was watching several brave kayakers riding the falls (wow!). We took a break from hiking to eat lunch with my friend from work, Ramesh B., and his wife at the Saffron Grill (starting at 1215). It was a very nice meal and we had some great conversation. Afterwards, we got gas in Herndon (1355) and headed across the Potomac. We stopped at Clara Barton's house (closed for renovation) and Glen Echo Park (more passport stamps). We rounded out our day with a visit to the C&O Canal site on the Maryland portion of Great Falls National Park. This allowed us to take a pleasant walk on the boardwalk trail out to a vista that was directly across the Falls from the trail we'd hiked in the morning. We also walked down the C&O until we reached the highly touted Billy Goat Trail. It lived up to the hype, for sure, in rock scrambles and views of the river. We followed the blue blazes until we encountered a nearly vertical climb about halfway around the island. Faced with diminishing sunlight, we took a shortcut through the woods to avoid the climb. We later saw a sign that said "Copperhead Nesting Area" (!). We had completed about half of the trail when we reached the C&O again. Lived through the danger and arrived at our car just as the sun was setting. Back at my apartment, I cooked dinner (baked potatoes and fruit) while we watched movies. By 2215, we were both tired and went to our rooms to read; sleep soon afterwards. Another great day outside with Mollie!

Washington, DC (USA)
I teleworked in the morning. Surprisingly, Mollie was up by 0830 and we ate breakfast together. Mollie rested for most of the morning but also took all the ornaments off the Christmas Tree. She also made us lunch (rice with steak and potatoes poured over, apples). I then teleworked again while Mollie did chores and read for most of the rest of the afternoon. I went into the city in the late afternoon (1615) and Mollie stayed home. Met Kelly at 1831 Bar and Lounge at Dupont Center (1645). More people showed up later: Joe R., Trinka, Stephanie, Jens, Kuldeep, Kim. We stayed until 1945 and I helped Kelly retrieve her car from the parking garage (2000). I then took her to Van Dorn, where she caught an Uber home. I drove home after that. I had been checking on Mollie all night and when I got home (2130), I found her watching "The Patriot". I opened up her Christmas gift for me (winter hats with head-lamps for hiking). Bed time was around 2300.

Front Royal, VA (USA)
Mollie got up earlier so we could go on a day trip. After breakfast, we headed to Manassas Battlefield so Mollie could get a stamp for her National Park Passport Book. The temperatures were almost 60 degrees. After we walked around a bit near the Visitors Center, we drove to Shenandoah National Park, entering at around 1130. Mollie had actually requested a hike and I was happy to oblige. It was great to be back on the trail after several months recovering from a minor surgical procedure. I chose to connect a section in the Southern District where I'd been before because I knew Mollie would like the distance, the climb and the view. And I was right... We first ate a picnic lunch at a stop along Skyline Drive and then parked at m/m 87.4 (Blackrock Gap) to begin our hike. We had a nice day with a warm sun on our shoulders and a cool breeze coming up from the valley below. Mollie clambered happily on the jagged rocks at the summit (yikes!) and then we headed down again. We logged almost 2.5 miles and then drove along about 40 miles of Skyline Drive before heading back to civilization. Just as we left the park, Mollie spotted a baby bear along the side of US-211 - we were able to see it up really close and took plenty of pictures. We drove to Front Royal (via a drive by of the Smithsonian Zoo Property) and we explored the old part of town. Ate a good dinner at El Maguey Mexican Bar & Grill in Front Royal (finished at 1700) before driving home. We enjoyed seeing the Manassas Christmas Lights along the side of the highway as we passed them on I-66. After we reached my apartment, we watched movies ("Emperor's Club" & "Little Women"). Bed was around 2300. It was a great day outdoors! AT Today = 1.20 miles / Grand Total AT = 824.88 miles

Washington, DC (USA)
I had the day off from work, which meant that Mollie and I could spend some more time together. When she got up (0930), we ate an early lunch and we packed up snacks for a day in DC. We arrived at 1115 and parked near Union Station. We first visited the Smithsonian National Postal Museum. Mollie designed a stamp and started a new stamp collection there. At around 1345, we rode the Metro to Gallery Place and toured the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery for the first time. We marveled at the Presidential portraits at our second. We also saw some amazing scenic panoramas of mountains and lakes (many that I'd hiked near over the last few years). By 1530, we took the Metro to Woodley Park and walked to the Smithsonian National Zoo. We had a light snack that we'd brought and then went to see the four Giant Pandas. Most of the other animal exhibits were closed but we enjoyed a few exhibits until the Zoo Lights began. Mollie and I love this event and always make sure to arrive an hour early so we get to see the animals before most of the the exhibits close. The colorful lights were a big highlight, as usual... It was very crowded this year, so we didn't stay late. At 1730, we walked back to Metro and took the Red Line to Union Station. We then enjoyed another one of our Daddy-Daughter traditions with dinner at Thunder Grill. We were finished at 1915 and drove home. We watched movies ("Raiders of the Lost Ark") at my apartment and went to bed at 2230

Mason Neck, VA (USA)
Mollie slept late, so I was able to fill up her stocking and clean up the apartment. She was up by 1000 (and was surprised by her stocking) and we started opening presents. We exchanged lots of photos and texts with the my sister and her family. Mollie also received several phone calls from her mother and her sisters. We made brunch (scrambled eggs, bacon, bagels) and had a nice time talking. I later dropped Mollie off at Nicky's (1200) for gift exchange and she returned at 1315. Mollie told me about the great Christmas gift exchange at her mother's house and she also brought more Christmas Tree ornaments and hung them on our tree. We watched "The Santa Clause". Afterwards, we drove to Mason Neck and went on a nature walk at the NWR. It was pleasant and we had more nice conversation. We arrived home around 1730 and ate dinner. We watched various clips and shorts related to Christmas until the quiet was interrupted by four fire trucks in my apartment complex (small fire with sprinkler deployment). After the excitement was over, we made Christmas calls (1930) to Dad and Beth, my sister and her family and then Bonnie and Kathy. Mollie cleaned the dishes and we continued relaxing, resting and chatting until about 2130, when we both headed to bed to read and relax. Sleep came soon after that...

Springfield, VA (USA)
Mollie slept late, so I did some shopping for stocking stuffers and Christmas Dinner food. When I got home, I ate a late breakfast with Mollie and we watched another movie ("Avengers: Civil War"). She next watched "We Bought a Zoo" while I decorated the dinner table and started cooking for Christmas Eve dinner. My friend, Kelly, had asked if she could bring her kids with us to Mass and Mollie helped me pick one of the Children's Masses in the afternoon. I invited the kids over for dinner, too. At 1545, I ran some errands. Kelly and the kids arrived while I was gone and Mollie entertained them. We finished cooking when I returned and played a board game ("Clue"). Then we all got dressed up and went to Mass (St. Raymond of Penafort) at 1800. Afterwards, we returned to the apartment and ate dinner (shrimp fettuccini, broccoli, rolls, pumpkin bars). We watched the beginning of "Saving Santa" with Kelly and her kids until they left 2030. Mollie and I finished the movie after cleaning up the dishes. I was planning to take her to Midnight Mass but we were both too tired (we ended up going to bed at 2200).

Nanjemoy, MD (USA)
I made us breakfast and we got ready for our now annual trip to pick up a Christmas Tree from my friend's (Bob T.'s) farm in Maryland. We left the house at around 1000 and drove to Nanjemoy. This was the third year we'd visited and Mollie knew exactly how to pick a good tree. While waiting for our turn, we had some hot chocolate being brewed on a big fire. The experience was great and we were on our way again by 1245. We stopped for lunch (KFC) near Indian Head on the way back (1320). From 1400 until 1600, we decorated the tree and the house, playing music and having fun. Mollie then got ready for her sleepover at Katie's. We went to Mass (St. Lawrence) and then I dropped her off at the party (1800). I went to visit my friend, Bob, and then spent the rest of the evening working on my Christmas cards.

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 5
We were up by 0530, packed and ready to go by 0600. Our route home took us via I-95 through Providence. We first drove to New London and took a brief tour of the Coast Guard Academy (Mollie's request). We got gas and breakfast in Branford (near Bridgeport) and made good time on I-95 (GWB), I-287 and I-78 after that (NYC by 1000, PA border by 1115). Unfortunately, we hit really bad traffic near Harrisburg (had to take a detour on PA-39). On the plus side, we had some really good food for lunch (Katie packed it), so we didn't have to stop. After passing into Maryland on US-15, we had more traffic trouble south of Frederick and then again on I-495 but still arrived in Alexandria 1530. Since we learned that Nicky would not be back at her house (because she was driving the Twins back to JMU) until much later, we stopped there so Mollie could feed her pets and let the dog out. After unpacking from our trip at my apartment, we ate dinner together and watched a movie ("The Secret Garden"). I did some laundry for Mollie (she ended up forgetting it when she left) and Mollie also did some chores (taking out trash and recycling, putting away food and laundry). Nicky picked up Mollie at 1900 and I got ready for the new work week. What a nice trip!

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 4
Mollie slept until 0930, when I woke her up. We ate breakfast and drove down to Cape Cod. We met up with everyone else at the Brewster Book Store so we could see my dad at his book signing (1115). Afterwards, we (Mollie, Ella had I) then went to the Cape Cod National Seashore (Salt Pond Visitor Center, Nauset Light, Marconi Beach, White Cedar Swamp Trail). We saw lots of seals pilot whales as we walked on the beach; we then picked up lunch (Wendy's, Mollie's treat) and visited my mother's grave (1500). On the way back to my father's house, we drove along MA-6A until we arrived in Sandwich. Just before the end of our drive, we enjoyed viewing the Christmas lights ("Giants") and then stopped to see my Dad and Beth. Mollie and Ella took the dogs for a walk and we visited until 1700. We then headed back towards Hanover. Mollie said she wished she could have had more time on the Cape. John and Mollie were texting and ended up convincing us to go to see Katie performing at the Rockland Holiday Stroll (1800). That was fun - we watched Katie singing in a traditional (Victorian Era) caroling choir and enjoyed the holiday streets (all closed off for pedestrians only). On the way back to Katie's, We stopped at Tedeschi's so we could pick up donuts (for the donut eating game) and cash in the lottery ticket present that our cousins gave us. We ate dinner (Thanksgiving leftovers) at the house and, when all the Duffs had returned, we watched "Elf" together and ate desserts. Everyone said their goodbyes (2145) and then Mollie and I went to sleep early (to prepare for our drive home).

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 3
Fun day visiting historical sites! Mollie slept late while I teleworked all morning. Katie and John made us a late breakfast (bacon & cheese cupcakes, chocolate chip pancakes). At 1230, we rode with Katie, John and the kids to Concord so we could visit the Minuteman National Park (Old North Bridge) and Sleepy Hollow Cemetery (Thoreau, Emerson, Alcott). It rained on us but we walked around a good bit anyway. Ella and Mollie also worked on a Junior Ranger badge together. Afterwards (1530), we drove to Burlington and ate a big/early dinner at Del Friscos (ate from about 1630 until 1745). We got back to Hanover by 1800, where we all watched TV ("The Goldbergs") and ate dessert. Mollie went with Johnnie and his friends to the movies ("Fantastic Beasts") while I rested. By 2200, everyone was home again and I went to bed (Mollie stayed up late with her cousins).

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 2
Mollie was up very early and helped Katie cook breakfast (frittatas) for everyone. By 1000, we started setting up the dining room for the Thanksgiving feast. Mollie helped with more cooking and the guests (24!) started arriving at around 1315. Katie's meal (turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, rolls, lots of desserts) was a rousing success and we finished off the fun with random questions around the table, a post meal walk and more visiting. The Redskins-Cowboys game came on at 1630 and some of us watched it while others played board games. Every guest left by 2000 and Katie made special turkey sandwiches as a light dinner. We watched TV for a few hours. Mollie went with her cousins (and Katie) to check out Black Friday deals at midnight (they actually got home at 3:00 AM on Friday morning) while I went to bed at regular time.

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 1
I woke Mollie up at 0645. She got ready and we packed the car for our trip to Massachusetts. We went to the grocery store on the way to school and picked up some breakfast bars. I dropped Mollie off at 0735 and went home to telework. Originally, I was going to pick Mollie up again at 1100, but she texted me to say that her makeup test (Biology) would actully be done by 0945. I stopped by the main school office and learned about late check-in and early check-out policies and procedures (including sub-school rules). We were on our way to Massachusetts by 1015 (!!). We did encounter significant traffic for about half of our drive. We stopped for gas and lunch (Pizza Hut) in Manada Hill (PA) at 1230. Our route after that was to drive on I-81 all the way to I-84. We crossed the Hudson River at Newburgh and then used back roads through Connecticut to reach I-95 again (avoiding the typical Danbury traffic jam). We stopped again for gas and dinner (Dunkin Donuts) in Providence (RI) at 2000. After that, we made good time and arrived in Hanover (Katie's house) by 2115. We visited with everyone and watched movies of our August rafting trip. Headed to bed at around 2300.

Harrisonburg, VA (USA)
The end of Daylight Savings helped me a lot this morning - I was on the road, wide awake by 0615. Gas fillup and breakfast at McDonalds in Marion (0625). I used VA-16 (Back of the Dragon) to reach VA-42 and headed east. It was 27 degrees in the valley north of Marion (yikes!). I located a trailhead on VA-623 (northeast of Ceres) after crossing two ridges on a winding gravel road. Along the way, I saw a raccoon, skunk and several deer. I headed SOBO on AT at 0745. The trail guide seemed to indicate a flat section but it was really another infuriating series of "up and over and downs" that I've seen often in my trekking. I was walking west on a long ridge above a wide valley to the north which was once coveted by the Vanderbilt family (they couldn't purchase the land, so they established Biltmore elsewhere). To the south, there was another valley - I enjoyed tremendous views all day. Highlights of the day included: no other hikers except for an Amish family, out for a Sunday stroll; constantly lowing cattle; spectacular views from Garden Mountain; and warming temperatures (20s became 60s). I turned around at Walker Gap and made it back to my car (after nearly 10 miles) by 12:15 PM. Just in time, too - lots of day hikers spoiled the solitude as I was leaving. Made my way back to Wytheville by crossing three ridges again on VA-621 and US-52 (brakes not happy...). No traffic on the way back! Great weekend - made some nice progress on my AT goals this year. Still have a few more weekends in 2016, too! Was able to reach Eileen for on the phone as I made my way north. Gas fillup in Wytheville (1325). Made contact with Brenna and Erin and was able to meet them for dinner at Billy Jack's in Harrisonburg (done at 1715). We also got gelato at Bella Gelato (1725). Drive home was pretty uneventful after hitting some traffic near New Market. AT Today = 4.70 miles / Grand Total AT = 823.68 miles

Marion, VA (USA)
The morning was very cold (low 30s with frost on the windows) but it was clear again (can't beat the weather!). At breakfast at McDonalds in Marion (0740). I started NOBO from the trailhead at the Mount Rogers NRA HQ (parking lot was actually closed) at 0815. From that moment until I returned to my car, I didn't see any hikers at all. I did encounter deer hunters, farmers and drivers on the road - but, even though it was a beautiful Fall weekend day, I guess no one else wanted to escape to the trail... Startled deer scattered as I followed the ridge line, a series of rollercoaster peaks (+/- 500 feet). The views of Mount Rogers and Whitetop, on one side, and the Back of the Dragon, on the other, were tremendous! I peeled layers off as I climbed (it was generally uphill until I passed FS-86) and the temperature reached 55 degrees by the time I finished. As I neared my planned turnaround point, it was clear I'd miscalculated the distance when I had been on Glade Mountain before: probably an error of a mile. Nevertheless, I found the vista point again and turned around. By that point, my feet were bothering me, so I decided to use the gravel forestry road to get back to my car. This also proved to be a mistake and I added another mile to the hike. I also ended up entering a private property area with suspicious locals (but no dogs, fortunately). Made it through OK, though. Walking on the roads, while better on my body, meant that I ended up going downhill into the valley below the AT and then climbing all the way back up again (actually not sure if that beat the rollercoaster option...)! In total, I walked 13.5 miles and finished the day at 1345. Thought about hiking another short section but decided to preserve my bones and muscles for a longer trek in the morning. Tried to go to Mass in town but it was cancelled (I guess there aren't a lot of Catholics in the area...). Ate a nice dinner at New China House in Marion (done at 1805) and then went exploring (trail gear) in Walmart. Watched some TV before bed. AT Today = 5.40 miles / G.T. AT = 818.98 miles

Marion, VA (USA)
The rain moved out last night, allowing me to strike out on the trail again. I was up very early and squeezed in some telework and breakfast (McDonalds, 0755) before heading out of town. About 20 minutes south of Marion, I lost cell signal (no problems here...). I used VA-600 to locate the AT trailhead at Elk Garden, starting NOBO at 0845. The mountains were wreathed in clouds, the temperatures were in the mid 40s and there was a brisk breeze when I left my car. I layered up and brought warm clothes, just in case. But the sky was beautiful! All day long, I walked in and out of the wild pony range (through various ingenious gates) and saw lots of evidence that they were around - but I never saw any. ?? I saw deer, countless birds and a large number of hikers. I talked to "Smoke Break" (SOBO thru) about my section hiking strategy, whether the Mount Rogers NRA was better than the White Mountains in NH and 20+ mile days. A few miles later (near Thomas Knob Shelter), I met an older, bearded hiker who (through a thick country accent) told me he was section hiking with backtracks like me. Just as we were finishing, a Prowler (EA-6B) flew by at eye level (offset from us by a few hundred yards - I could see the crew). Probably USMC out of Cherry Point on a low level (what do you think, Chris & Arnie?). They came back later but it wasn't nearly as SH... I continued east and made my way across the Grayson Highland State Park balds and boules (including a fat man squeeze). I hadn't planned on going all the way to Massie Gap but the weather was so great and I felt so good that I made it. But then I had to backtrack... I used red Milburn Ridge Trail (basically, it was all a boulder scramble). There were so many people on the AT by that point that I stayed away for as long as I could, bushwacking and following the pony trails until I reached the spur trail to Mount Rogers Summit. It was half a mile to the top - 5729 feet - but there was NO VIEW! More entertaining was the cadre of fluorescent vest clad older ladies who chased me up there to the dead end. I headed back down towards my car, encountering "brr, its cold" day hikers, a shotgun wielding rabbit hunter who was training his dog and several packs of loud hikers who I mainly avoided by following the Virginia Horse Trail instead of the AT. I finished my wild adventure day at 1545 PM after 17 miles, feeling great. Whew - bring on more tomorrow! Dinner (food I'd brought) in the hotel. AT Today = 8.00 miles / G.T. Today = 813.58 miles

Marion, VA (USA)
It was a heck of a day, but it ended on the trail (and that's all that matters to me!). I was up at 0500, worked for a few hours in Warrenton. As I was leaving the area, I stopped for gas in Haymarket (0945) and then drove to Roanoke to visit the VA Medical Center. My business there didn't take too long (1215-1330). I then headed south, bound for Marion and another four days of AT! Got lunch at Taco Bell in Dublin (1430). I checked into Travel Inn, Marion, VA with coupon (1530) and got changed. Using a map I bought last time was in the area, I found a trailhead on Pugh Mountain (VA-601). At 1630, I hiked NOBO towards VA-16 (trying to meet up with another section I hiked with Mollie during the previous month). The leaves above were vibrant reds, oranges and yellows - my camera couldn't capture the startling colors. More than half of my hike was through a deep tunnel of rhododendron bushes. There were no signs of people and I only saw birds and squirrels. After an hour of walking, I realized I'd overshot my turnaround point (I passed the pile of rocks before seeing another pile I recognized from my photos). As a result, I hiked ("retreaded") almost an extra mile (about six total for the day). And then it got dark... I never had to use my headlamp, though - I was able to sense subtle clues of the beaten trail and was relieved to occasionally catch glimpses of the white blazes in my peripheral vision. It felt kind of like drifting down the river - following the path of least resistance. After finishing (1900), I carefully made my way back down the narrow gravel road to civilization, just as it started raining. Hoping to climb Mount Rogers in the morning! AT Today = 2.50 miles / Grand Total AT = 805.58 miles

Fort Washington, MD (USA)
While Mollie was sleeping in the morning, I met Kelly at Southside 815 for brunch and we watched the Redskins-Bengals Game (finished at 1200). After I got home and retrieved Mollie, we headed into Maryland to visit three more National Parks! We first enjoyed views of the Potomac (and Mount Vernon) from Fort Washington. We continued south and visited the Piscataway National Farm (first time there since APR 2006). There, we rubbed elbows (and produced homemade candles) with 1770s farmers and mingled among flocks of sheep, chickens and turkeys. At the end of the adventure, we paid our respects at the grave of one of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Stone, and visited his home near Indian Head. The eather was awesome as we capped off the last weekend in October with lots of walking. Had another great day with Mollie and was sad to drop her off at 1700.

Doswell, VA (USA)
I made breakfast and Made ate some of it when she finally woke up (very late). We then got ready and left for King's Dominion (1030). We picked up Kelly and her kids and had lunch together (Burger King) at around 1245. Then we went into the park (1315) and rode on lots of tides until dark. Lines were long but we were undeterred. Mollie got her face painted (1815). We ate dinner at the Country Kitchen (inside the park) at around 1850. We spent the evening enjoying the scare zones and haunted mazes. We departed the park at around 2200 and drove home, dropping off Kelly, Emma and Aidan on the way. Mollie and I arrived home by 2330 and went to bed immediately. It was great to have one more fun day (and night) with our season pass at King's Dominion! Hoping to return again next year...

Harrisonburg, VA (USA)
Had business at James Madison University during most of the day, so my hiking weekend plans were derailed. But, like so many other times recently, I decided to try to make the best of things, to keep my goals on track for finishing the AT. Drove to Harrisonburg early in the morning (actually, earlier than Brenna and Erin wanted to meet me...). I ate food I'd brought on the way (late breakfast) and, after meeting up with the Twins, drove them around town, looking at apartments. After we finished, I dropped them off and picked up a late lunch at McDonalds in Harrisonburg (1625) By 1700, I was on Skyline Drive and making my way to a trailhead in the Southern District. Parked at Camp Store and hiked NOBO to Ivy Creek Spring (access trail). I then turned around and headed SOBO, all the way to Doyles River Trail. This tied up two sections I'd hiked previously. More than two thirds of my trek was spent in total darkness. Deer were everywhere! About halfway through, I was startled to encounter some nature walkers (no flashlights) - better than a bear, though. In addition to the lower temperatures (falling from about 50 to just under 40 during my three hour hike), there was a cold wind blowing - it was sharpest on the SE side of Loft Mountain (brrrrrr!). Hiked about 8.5 miles total because I used the campground roads to reach my car during the backtrack. Hardcore campers, already snug in their translucently lit tents and fancy RVs, made me feel better about braving the elements tonight - I'm not the only crazy person: the place was actually packed! Foliage viewers had filled all the accommodations nearby so I had no choice but to call it a weekend when I was done hiking at around 2045. On the way home after my mini-adventure, I stopped for dinner at Wendy's in Ruckersville (2130). AT Today = 4.30 miles / Grand Total AT = 803.08 miles

Atkins, VA (USA)
Ate a nice breakfast at The Barn (0730) before heading out to stitch more AT sections together... Like yesterday, I had to re-locate a turnaround from my last visit to Atkins in 2014. Luckily, I did remember this one because it was a busy train crossing. Starting NOBO at 0900 at VA-615 (after a great breakfast at "The Barn"), I linked up with the old section and turned SOBO. After returning to the Settler's Museum, where I'd parked, it was all uphill until I'd had enough. I somehow avoided a nasty wasp nest that was heavily advertised. All around me, the leaves were falling furiously - the colors were fiery red and bright yellow. The climb up Glade Mountain was steep and rocky. At some point on the way, I entered Mount Rogers NRA (again). I didn't see any wildlife today, unfortunately. But I did encounter an older lady (and her dog) from North Carolina. She provided a lot of local trail knowledge - she said she hikes in Mount Rogers NRA often. I turned around at a beautiful vista point above Atkins. I saw one more local hiker on the way down but didn't talk much to him (in a hurry - long drive home). I exited the trail at VA-727 (dirt and gravel road), enjoying the historic farmland and buildings on the way to my car. Finished my 10 mile day at around 1400. Drive home sucked (three accidents and LOTS of traffic). But, from the horror stories I'd seen about the crowds in SNP this weekend (from the AT Hiker FB Group), the driving to/from remote trail experience was well worth the effort! Gas fillup in Haymarket (1830). AT Today = 5.00 miles / 798.78 miles

Atkins, VA (USA)
Got a really late start today - almost didn't leave but the great weather ultimately convinced me. Gas fillup in Lexington (1220). Checked into Relax Inn (Rural Retreat in Atkins) at 1500. Got changed and drove to the trailhead. Started SOBO at about 1530 from the parking lot on VA-617. I'd hiked in this area in 2014, before I had a map or trail guide - needless to say, I had not estimated the mileage correctly... Still, my hike to the vaguely recalled turnaround ended up being easier than I expected - in a short time, I'd located a familiar spot and was able to turn NOBO, bound for newer treads. The initial climb took me through some cow pastures but then the trail went into a deep forest. Before long, I could barely hear the sounds from I-81. White tailed deer continually scattered as I climbed up Little Brushy Mountain - they were everywhere! I encountered four SOBO thru hikers: three were in a hurry and didn't chat much but one ("Mojo") engaged me in conversation immediately. He was sitting by the side of the trail, looking concerned - it turned out that he'd run out of water. Fortunately for him, I had extra (how many times have I been able to pay the trail magic forward this year?). While we talked (about the trail in both directions), I noticed that he was hiking in Crocs - he said they hurt his feet but his boots were worse (yikes! not his day, I guess). After I turned around at the crossing of the Crawfish Trail, the sun went down (beautiful sunset). I was able to walk without my headlamp for another hour but it eventually was too hard and I put it on. By the time I reached the cow fields again, though, a huge moon had risen overhead. I was glad for the extra light because there were cows everywhere! They didn't want to move, either (several interesting eulogy stories went through my head at that point...). I eventually made it back to my car (2000), after finishing about 12 miles (with the uncountable distance and backtrack). Dinner at El Burrito Loco (2015). Staying with a bunch of hikers tonight! AT Today = 5.20 miles / Grand Total AT = 793.78 miles

Notre Dame Football Weekend - Day 4
The best hiking day is one when someone else joins you! Mollie and I woke up in hotel room at 0730, checked out (0810) and got breakfast (Aunt Bea's) in Independence (0825). We made our way out of the no cell signal zone on the VA-NC border, following VA-16 north until we reached the Mount Rogers NRA Visitors Center, north of Sugar Grove (0915). We learned a lot about the area and made plans for our next visit. Conveniently, the AT passed right through the parking lot. We managed to squeeze in a total of about three miles of hiking, out and back, in a little more than an hour (0930 to 1045). It was cool and sunny and the trail on an old Forest Service road was very easy. One highlight was the pretty shelter we passed. In addition, we enjoyed some great fall colors on the trees and the tunnel like passageways through the rhododendron bushes. We turned around at a stream bed about halfway to the next parking area. Our walk back was equally pleasant and we might have continued if we hadn't run out of time. By 1100, we were on the road, bound for home. Mollie texted with her mother, asking if she could have extra visitation time to see her sisters in Harrisonburg. Nicky said "take your time" because she was supposed to work until 2200 anyway. Mollie then got in touch with Brenna and Erin, setting up the rendezvous at JMU. We stopped to get gas and lunch in Lexington at 1310 and arrived in Harrisonburg at about 1400. Because it was one of our first trips to see the Twins in college, I spent some time trying to navigate the parking pass process. Ultimately, this ended up being unnecessary because it was a weekend day... Mollie and I then toured the campus for about three hours, met the Twins's friends, ate dinner (Duke's Cafe), took pictures and played games. I also drove both Brenna and Erin to/from class (at different times). Overall, I had a great evening with all three of my girls at JMU! Had been planning to head straight home but Mollie asked if we could take the "scenic route" through Shenandoah National Park. I agreed to this after her mother approved our late arrival in Alexandria and we started east around 1745. Mollie then got a frantic call from her mother: apparently, Nicky had heard on the radio that the Adele concert she bought tickets for was actually about to start in DC in the next hour! When it was clear we wouldn't make it and Nicky hung up (upset), I asked Mollie to check the internet and she learned that the concert was, as she had originally thought, 24 hours later (in other words, there wasn't any problem). Mollie told her mother about this and we continued on our way without additional drama. We saw amazing sunset views before we left Skyline Drive to get on US-211. Mollie said several times that she didn't want to go home... We almost got killed by driver using the wrong side of the highway just west of Warrenton (yikes!). Using US-29, I-66 and I-495, we got to my apartment at 2030. We unpacked the car and I dropped Mollie off at her house at 2100. I felt very contented when I went to sleep - we packed in some amazing things in just four days. I also can tell that my daughter loves the mountains and remote areas as much as I do! AT Today = 1.40 miles / Grand Total AT = 788.58 miles

Notre Dame Football Weekend - Day 3
I counted on Mollie sleeping several hours later today (and I was right!)... Left Independence at 0615 and made my way to the trailhead at Dickey Gap, on VA-650 (near VA-16). Had to dodge deer all the way... It was dark when I started SOBO (0700) - temperatures were in the 40s and I was glad I brought extra layers of clothing. The terrain in Mount Rogers National Recreation Area wasn't too challenging and I made good time to Chestnut Flats (intersection of Iron Mountain Trail). It was a bit windy on the ridge but the sun was shining brightly. I love hiking in the Fall! Turned around and enjoyed a mostly downhill return leg. I got a couple of nice breaks when I encountered SOBO through hikers. One guy had spent the night in the Hurricane Mountain Shelter (brrrrr!) and told me his hike had been interrupted in 2009 when he was in Connecticut - he finally had a chance to finish the rest of the AT. The rest of the hikers (group of five) had hiked up from the same trailhead as me. Otherwise, the only other living things I encountered during my 12.5 mile hike were scattered wild turkeys, loudly gobbling near the trail... Reached my car at 1130, feeling great. I arrived back at the hotel (Mollie had already eaten breakfast and extended our stay by one night) at 1200. We drove across the street and ate lunch at Aunt Bea's in Independence (1245) - it was delicious! We then drove to Grayson Highlands State Park, arriving at 1345, via a very winding road (US-58). We spent a few hours hiking and viewing the wild ponies that lived there (Mollie was in heaven!). Got an extra bonus: the AT crossed the Wilburn Ridge there and I was able to scout out a future trailhead for my climb of Mount Rogers. Looking forward to returning to the area again! We took a tour of visitors center and bought souvenirs (1515). Afterwards, we explored the Mount Rogers NRA on some curvy mountain roads (and heated up Bessie's breaks A LOT - yikes!). We finally got a cell signal for the first time in over 36 hours and Mollie made me stay right there while she checked her social media. On the way back to the hotel, we found a nice looking restaurant: the Log House Trading Post in Mouth of Wilson (arrived at 1545). For the second night in a row, we were lucky to be eating early because restaurants in the area apparently close at 1800 and run out of food well before that. Our dinner consisted of catfish, mashed potatoes, squash, hush puppies and apple fries - we took off the feed back at 1715. On the way back to Independence, we explored the New River and North Carolina border area in Mouth of Wilson. Back at the hotel, we relaxed and watched TV (including a Presidential Debate). Went to bed at 2330. AT Today = 6.20 miles / G.T. AT = 787.18 miles

Notre Dame Football Weekend - Day 2
I teleworked in the morning and then woke Mollie up at 0800. We ate breakfast in the lobby and left the hotel at 0915. we shopped at Walmart (0940) in Henderson to pick up a rain poncho and then drove to Raleigh for the Notre Dame & NC State football game. Stopped for Gas in Morrisville (1055). After having trouble parking (1130) and then walking through the rain (Hurricane Matthew), we arrived at the stadium just before it started (1200). We found our seats but were waterlogged before the end of the first half. So we found some cover and lunch (Chick-fil-A, pizza). We were planning to stay for the second half but the weather got worse and the game was delayed. Ultimately, we decided to leave at about 1430 and had significant trouble (rain and wind) getting back to the car (Mollie almost blew away!). On the road (still raining) by 1500 and listened to the end of the game (the Irish lost...). We drove to Mount Airy, where the weather improved tremendously and ate dinner (chicken and dumplings, mac and cheese, green beans, salad, potatoes, corn bread, cinnamon apples, milkshake) at Nana's Kitchen. After finishing (1750), we headed north. Stopped for gas at 1830 and found a hotel (Grayson Inn) when we arrived at Independence, Virginia. We were settled in our room (with no cell signal) by 1900 and watched TV until 2230.

Notre Dame Football Weekend - Day 1
Nicky had asked me if Mollie could stay with me for the weekend (extra visitation!) because she was going on a trip with Steve. Of course I agreed because I wanted Mollie to go with me to see the Notre Dame versus NC State football game. She arrived the previous evening and I was excited to learn that she didn't even have school when she was with me (four day weekend!). I teleworked in the morning and woke Mollie up at 0900. She ate a late breakfast and we packed for our trip. We then drove to Kings Dominion, eating a pre-packed lunch (that Mollie made) on the way. We arrived at 1245 and spent about four hours at the park with our season passes. We had our fill of fun rides and then drove south, pre-positioning for the next day. We ate dinner (Taco Bell in Chester, VA) at 1715. After that, we drove a bit longer and then found a hotel (Budget Host) in Henderson, North Carolina (1920). It had already started raining by that point - not a good sign for the next day's sporting event... Mollie’s godfather, Chuck, called us and we talked to him for a while. We also watched TV until about 2200 and went to bed.

Warrenton, VA (USA)
I hoped to seize an opportunity for a hike today, since I was meeting with our team in Warrenton. In the morning, I could actually see the ridges of SNP since it was a clear day - I was really glad I came prepared! Had a productive day and even squeezed in lunch at Wegmans with the staff (1245). After work, I drove about an hour to the southwest and parked at a trailhead at mile marker 75.2 on Skyline Drive (Pinefield Gap). Quickly changed and headed SOBO (1500). What a great day for the trail! I could see for miles from several vistas and didn't see any people. Wasn't sure how much daylight I actually had, so I had a couple of exits planned (I didn't want to end up hiking with the bears after sunset). This area had actually been closed early in the season because of a forest fire - but I could barely see any evidence of the damage. When I'd had my fill of the rolling hills and valleys, I settled for a (non-AT) trail that took me by an old cabin and spring near Ivy Creek. There I encountered the only people I saw in the woods all day: two SOBO thru hikers. Chatted with them for a short time before heading west, exiting near Loft Mountain Wayside. The AT section I chose today wasn't too long but with the trail back to the road (over half a mile), along with the slightly longer walk back on the road (no shortcuts across the ridge line), I probably hiked about nine miles by the time I reached my car (1815). It was already past sunset at that point but the sun peaking over the ridges on the other side of the Shenandoah Valley kept the road well lit until I started down the east side of the mountain at Swift Run Gap. Uneventful ride home on US-29 (probably easier because it wasn't a weekend...). Gas fillup in Gainesville (2000). Happy to find a way to squeeze some trail miles in (especially on a weekday) - I can't miss chances to enjoy the great Fall mountain weather! AT Today = 3.90 miles / Grand Total AT = 780.98 miles

Alexandria, VA (USA)
Katie and Mollie slept until 1100 after their sleepover. I made breakfast (pancakes, eggs, bacon, fruit) and the girls helped me clean up (dishes, laundry). Shelly came up get Katie at noon. Mollie and I went to Fort Belvoir to explore the Oktoberfest. We got lunch (butterfly chips, cinnamon almonds) there but only stayed for a little while because of the lines and the deep mud. We decided to go to the bowling alley on Post for three games of "Lunar Bowling" (finished at 1450). Afterwards, we played catch at Mark Twain and walked around the track. We stopped by our old house and even took a tour (Jenn B. was having an open house). Mollie played with the neighborhood cat, Charger, who came over to see her. I dropped Mollie off at her mother's house at 1645. I went home rested at my apartment after a busy weekend...

Newport, VA (USA)
Had a nice breakfast at the hotel this morning (0700) before I tried (unsuccessfully) to park at nearby trailheads... Gave up and headed towards Pearisburg. On the way (via VA-624), I stumbled across a gravel road that took me up to the top of Brush Mountain. The AT crossed near the parking lot for the Audie Murphy airplane crash site. It was foggy - almost raining - and the temperatures were in the low 60s. Using the approach trail (0830), I paid my respects at the memorial and ran into the SOBO thru hiker from yesterday (always funny to see their faces when I reappear miles away). I then headed NOBO, down the eastern side of the mountain. It was silent for almost the whole morning - not a sound... Then I met two members of the Trail Club, who warned me about the steep terrain (they were coming uphill). Despite their misgivings, I made good time to VA-620. When I turned around, I powered up the 1500 foot slope, feeling great all the way. About the only thing that slowed me down was a blister that was starting to develop on my toe (grrrr). Still, I finished about 10 miles (4.5 new miles of AT), the first part of my day, at around 1230. I ate some lunch I'd brought and then drove to the White Rocks Recreation Area. I parked where I'd hiked about two weeks ago (VA-635). Starting SOBO (1345), I walked into the woods (covered by rhododendron bushes) and followed Stony Creek. The atmosphere of this leg was tremendously different: hot, sunny, dry. I met another SOBO thru hiker and talked to him for a little while. After 2.1 miles, I exited via another approach trail and then walked back to my car on the road. This second part of my day (a little more than four miles) ended at 1430. I made good time on the drive home - got gas in Mount Jackson (1820). Feeling very strong and glad to have had such a great weekend! AT Today = 6.60 miles / G.T. AT = 777.08 miles

Daleville, VA (USA)
Woke up early and headed south for another hiking weekend! I was making very good time until I encountered a massive accident on I-81 near New Market. Traffic didn't move for about 45 minutes and I might have been trapped even longer but another motorist turned around and drove in the opposite direction, disappearing onto an access road about five car lengths behind me. I didn't need more hints! Got gas in Raphine (0750). Still made it to the trailhead on VA-311 by 0900. Hiked SOBO (opposite direction from McAfee Knob, right across the road) in pleasant temperatures along a the top of a gently rolling ridge. So happy to leave behind the office, even for just a few hours... Most of the hikers I met today were parents and kids (#FamilyHikingDay). I did encounter a SOBO thru hiker on my outbound leg and saw him again on the way back (didn't chat, though). After I reached VA-624, I had to deal with a 1000 foot climb to get to my car - relieved I could make it, actually... Took a break at the summit - enjoyed the weather and feeling of isolation (part of me wished it wouldn't end). Reached the packed parking lot (after 12 miles) by 1430. Explored trailhead locations to the east before calling it a day. Ate an early dinner at Wendy's in Daleville (1520). Rested and watched football in my room at the Howard Johnson Motel in Daleville. Blacksburg, VA (USA)
[Working a career fair at Virginia Tech all day. Still, I managed to squeeze in another trail section (VA-635 to Bailey's Gap Shelter, NOBO) after a full day at work in Blacksburg. I found a good trailhead after driving on US-460 towards Pembroke and then heading into the National Forest. Hadn't been in the area since May 2014 and I was happy to find a way to connect to a remote section I'd previously only accessed via gravel roads. I started climbing (NOBO) at 1730 and felt really strong, even with the 1000 foot per mile gradient. It was cool in the woods and there were minimal rocks. Didn't see anyone at all... Turned around at the shelter and raced back down the hill, hoping to get in several more miles before sunset. But then I met another (section - Damascus to Glasgow) hiker... Instead of continuing, I found myself in a longer conversation with him about landmarks, trail experiences and even "do you know so and so...". Normally I like this but this time it was cutting into my trail time (and making my 4+ hour drive seem that much longer). In the end, though, I decided to just revel in the camaraderie and settle for just three miles today. I packed up (1900) and drove home (via US-460, I-81, I-66, gas in Haymarket at 2330, I-495). Sad to see the end a streak of six straight days of AT - it will be hard to beat the hiking chances I got this week! AT Today = 1.50 miles / G.T. AT = 764.58 miles]

Blacksburg, VA (USA)
When my company asked if I could go to Blacksburg for a Career Fair, I was happy to accept the opportunity! I worked in DC until about 1400, took the Metro back to my car and started my trip to Blacksburg (I-495, I-66, I-81, US-460). Upon arriving, I first checked the Courtyard near VT (full). Filled up on gas at Speedway (1800) and then found out that the Red Carpet Inn had vacancy (check-in at 1805). Changed clothes and then drove north, eating dinner at Taco Bell (1845). The AT was only about 20 miles away, so it was hard to pass up another chance for a hike... The sun had nearly set by the time I located the trailhead on VA-630 (a back road northeast of Newport). I hiked SOBO into the woods and climbed a gentle slope for about half a mile. I startled a large deer and he took off running (he startled me too). When I came out of the trees, I found myself standing in the most peaceful spot I've found in years. There was still some light behind the mountains to the west. All around me were beautiful wild flowers and the field I was in was itself surrounded by manicured farmland. Pretty homes and barns dotted the hills on all sides. The moon was bright in the sky, high above. There. Was. Not. One. Single. Sound. I paused for several minutes and considered never returning... Eventually, the silence was interrupted by the cicadas as they starting their evening songs. I also heard farmers corralling their cows. So I resumed my outbound leg (downhill), turning around at VA-42. As I headed back, I was surrounded by darkness for the fourth night of the last five. I didn't have to use any lights during this hike, though. I was just about to get into my car when some locals drove by to offer help, since they thought my car was broken. Guess there aren't many visitors to this area (there actually wasn't even a parking lot)... I was able to squeeze in 1.8 miles in about 45 minutes - not tiring or draining. Looking forward to visiting this part of the trail again! AT Today = 0.90 miles / G.T. AT = 763.08 miles

South Fields, NY (USA)
Relatively speaking, today was an easy day. I parked at Tiorati Beach and walked up the hill to the trailhead (see section #2 from Friday), starting NOBO at 0730. It was overcast and breezy, much cooler then the previous few days. But the humidity was still pretty high... I made great time because it was mostly downhill. I turned around at the western crossing of Seven Lakes Drive and walked back on the road (all uphill). Saw one other (day) hiker all day. A huge pack of racing "luxury cars" spoiled the silence towards the end of my hike (not cool...). Reached my car at about 0910, after a little more than 3.5 total miles. I'm happy that I could power through the heat and hills to inch closer to the AT halfway mark... Drove home via the following route: NY-17 to I-287, I-78, I-81, I-83, PA-581, US-15, gas in Dillsburg (1215), I-270, I-495. New work week: here I come! AT Today = 2.20 miles / G.T. AT = 762.18 miles

Bear Mountain, NY (USA)
Another scorcher today but I still managed to log about 12 miles on the trail. Started with breakfast at Dunkin Donuts in Harriman (0700) and then drove east. I made a wrong turn and ended up in the West Point training area. Eventually, I found a trailhead on the eastern end of Seven Lakes Drive, south of Bear Mountain. Headed NOBO at 0800 and climbed about 1000 feet in the first two miles. When I reached the summit, the views of the Hudson Valley were tremendous. There were lots of day hikers and cyclists there enjoying the clear weather too. I continued over the mountain top and down to the Inn, connecting to a section I'd hiked previously. There were far more people in that area - including a high school cross country race (that brought back memories...). I decided to use Seven Lakes Drive to get back to my car - it shaved about 2.5 miles off the backtrack. I saw lots of Army Cycling Team members training (up and down the hill). Part one of my day yielded 4.3 miles of AT in just under three hours. I made it back to my hotel and spent a few hours recovering and watching college football. I went to dinner at Keystone Hoagies in Tuxedo (1705) and then returned to the Elk Pen so I could connect two sections in Harriman State Park. I headed NOBO, braving the high 80s temperatures again (1745). It was only two miles, but my body was protesting the whole time. The roller coasters, rocks and roots didn't help... But I found a reason to be grateful when I encountered a large crowd of sullen day hikers (their leader had gotten them lost for 6.5 hours in the park - yikes!). Actually, they weren't even the first people whose day I made by giving estimates of trail distance - found myself being a tour guide a few times... After I reached the Lemon Squeezer (true to its name), I was completely spent. I still had 0.3 miles to go and it was extremely painful. I was cheered by a steady breeze and views of the setting sun across Island Lake. After I turned around, I decided to use a gravel road I'd seen to get to Arden Valley Road. It made the return trip longer but it also went more smoothly - I didn't even need a light to reach my car (2000) because the moon was so bright. Exhausted and sore but ready for more! AT Today = 6.40 miles / Grand Total AT = 759.98 miles

South Fields, NY (USA)
The temperatures were sweltering all day and the humidity was practically visible! So I split up my hike into three sections (all started SOBO, total of nearly 12 miles): Elk Pen parking lot to Sapphire Trail; Arden Valley Road to Island Pond Mountain; Lakes Road to Wildcat Shelter. I started the first section early (trailhead by 0730), hiking back to where I turned around last night. The sun looked very pretty, coming up on the horizon. I didn't see any hikers but had some funny chats with construction workers on the bridge crossing the NY State Thruway. I started with a climb up the Agony Grind. Signed a trail log at the top of the ridge. It was already getting warm when I finished the first part of my day, so I decided to move my car and drove farther into the State Park until I found Tiorati Lake (1000). Nearby, I located another trailhead and did some more rock climbing. I met a young woman who was thru hiking SOBO and passed her in both directions. My hat is off to the folks who can keep moving in the elements, day after day. I had hoped to reach the Lemon Squeezer but finally had to give up (stopped just short). The climbing and descending was just too much. Even after the wise choice, I still paid on the way back... I had hydrated and eaten but the heat was still powerful enough that it was only willpower that got me back to the car (1300). I went back to my hotel (picking up the owner, who knows me after several visits, down in South Fields) and rested for several hours. I had to get through muscle cramps and reset my water balance - and it wasn't easy... By dinner time, I was feeling well enough to hike some more. After a protein-rich meal at Wendy's in Monroe (1750), I headed to the last trailhead (1845). Clouds were threatening and the sun was barely visible through the trees. But it wasn't as hot and I made it to my turnaround before it was too dark to see where I was going. I encountered two thru hikers who had run out of water at the shelter and were headed out in the dark to find a spring (1.5 miles away). Sounds like the water sources are almost all dry... After they raced off ahead, I heard several large animals (deer?) running in the woods. Needed my head lantern to reach my car (2000) but it was an easier night of hiking! It was a tough day but I made some great progress and am looking forward to another day of this. Tuxedo Motel again... AT Today = 5.70 miles / Grand Total = 753.58 miles

South Fields, NY (USA)
Had meetings all day in Gaithersburg, so I packed for a hiking weekend! Was in Maryland early and completed all requirements. Even had a chance for lunch with Bill M. at Quickway (1130). Was able to escape from town by 1500 and headed north on I-270, US-15 and I-83. Had to drive through Harrisburg on city streets to get to I-81 - I-78, I-287. Got gas in Boonton, NJ (1905) and continued to NY-17. Despite the traffic, I made great time to the NY-NJ border (near the scene of my unfortunate need for a mountain rescue in June...). After checking into the Tuxedo Motel, I quickly changed clothes and headed to the trailhead on Orange Turnpike, starting NOBO at about 2030 (after sunset). It was a rocky climb and and the temperatures were still in the high 80s (!). Footing was very challenging and I lost my bearings several times in the dark. The blazes were OK but there was no obvious beaten path across the rocks. At the first ridge line, I encountered a pair of SOBO thru hikers ("Bolt" and "Rocky", guys who just finished college). They were camped along the trail and their campfire, the periodic sound of cars in the valleys below and the map app on my phone provided welcome navigational aids! When I reached my turnaround point (Sapphire Trail), I was treated to a beautiful (albeit hazy) view of the moon and the mountains in Harriman State Park. It was very slow going during the 1+15 hours of my trek but I managed to squeeze in about 2.5 miles (backtrack and redirects included) before 2200. This was real night hiking - I'll need some practice before it is "fun"... Stayed at the Tuxedo Motel again. More trails tomorrow! AT Today = 1.00 miles / G.T. AT = 747.88 miles]

Harrisonburg, VA (USA)
[After checking out of my room at the Motel 6, I ate breakfast at McDonalds in Harrisonburg (0655). Next, I headed out to do some bear hunting in Shenandoah National Park! It was a fee free day (NPS Centennial). I didn't rush the start of the morning but still made it to the trailhead (Doyles River Trail) at Skyline Drive mile marker 81 by 0800. Temps were in the mid 70s and I was able to stay in the shade for most of the morning. The trail was well-worn and the climbing wasn't too difficult. Saw lots of caterpillars today, for some reason... It got warmer through the day but I made great time, reaching my turnaround point (Blackrock Summit) in about 1.5 hours. The views were tremendous! When I started back, I began to encounter large groups of day hikers. Unfortunately, I didn't see any bears at all. I pretty much raced back to my car, arriving at 1130 as the temps reached the mid 90s. Was glad to fit in around 9.5 miles before it was unbearably hot... On the way home, I visited my friends, James and Renee, near Warrenton. Great weekend! AT Today = 4.70 miles / Grand Total AT = 746.88 miles]

Harrisonburg, VA (USA)
[I had hoped to leave at 0430 this morning but late night festivities at Bob's derailed that plan (it was worth it, though). I departed almost four hours late. Got gas in New Market (0845). Still made it to the trailhead in the Mount Pleasant area (FS-48) by 1130. Headed NOBO, chased all day by a very warm sun and a gentle breeze. Didn't see anyone for a few hours (everyone else had headed SOBO) - I did encounter a deer, right on the trail, though. There were also butterflies and lots of colorful flowers everywhere. Like the rest of the stretch between Roanoke and Rockfish Gap, this section had several roller coasters (+/- 500 feet). About two miles from my turnaround point (Piney River North Fork), I met a family who had stopped to eat lunch. We talked for awhile, sharing stories about good hiking areas and places to camp. Soon after, I talked to my first flip-flopper of the season (SOBO). After I backtracked, I ran into "Bearfoot/Barefoot" (AKA "Mountain Slider"), another flip-flopper (NOBO) who startled me while expressing his inner monologue as I came around the bend. He was out of water and seemed very worried about this. When he started talking about Trail Magic (he had found a cooking pot and a bottle of bourbon!), I realized I had extra water to share. Of course, it was in an often-used plastic bottle (the kids have chastised me for reuse, but I've persisted...). He wasn't too proud or picky to take it from me - we're all best friends on the trail, right? ?? Later, I found what I believe was his water purifying kit - he may have trouble without it... Ultimately, I made it to the top of the last ridge (after a few more conversations) and then enjoyed the stroll downhill to my car, finishing my roughly 12 mile day around 1600. Felt tired but satisfied, since I don't have any more VA miles left (outside of SNP) north of Roanoke. Headed back to Harrisonburg and checked into Motel 6 at 1720. Enjoyed dinner with Erin at the Festival Center (1915) and then took dorm tours with Erin and Brenna. The day was the perfect mix of driving, exploring, exercising and socializing! Buena Vista, VA (USA)
[Tried unsuccessfully to view the Perseids after sunset and before dawn - too bad... It was too early for any real breakfast so I got some snacks at the gas station (0525). Left Buena Vista at 0530 - and made my way to the trailhead on VA-812. The dark, hilly, winding roads made it slow going. I'd hiked part of this section before and wanted to locate another road crossing (to shorten my day) that I'd seen when I had cell signal. It looked like I would be successful - until I found the ending of two gravel roads (but no AT) and had to backtrack to my original starting point (one hour wasted). I headed NOBO just as the sun cleared some ridges in the east and I retraced my steps to the sign for the Johns Hollow Shelter. This section, a 2000 foot climb with numerous switchbacks, was almost completely a mental challenge. The climbing was physically tough but I was able to lean forward and move my feet - to a point. I didn't see any people or wildlife but it was just as well (didn't need anymore encouragement to stop or turn around). In some ways, the whole day reminded me of the Nefud Desert crossing in "Lawrence of Arabia" ("In one hour comes the sun..."). I WAS racing Sol! My brain and body were both fried by the time I reached the top of my climb - I'd dealt with with several "false summits", was completely drenched from head to toe and had trouble finding my turnaround point (much different views of the James River valley and vegetation since the last visit). One positive: I escaped the worst of the sun because I spent the morning mostly on the western side of the ridge. I'd also hydrated all night and morning and it paid off (along with some snacks I'd brought). After admiring the great view, I was able to get back down the mountain in half the time. Not wanting to spend one extra minute in the heat, I blew by three guys who'd apparently just started a late climb from the shelter (yikes!). Back at my car after finishing about 7.5 total miles (1000), I changed every stitch I was wearing and was STILL wet for another hour! Fortunately, my drive north went very well. Got a gas fillup in Raphine (1105) and I arrived home just after 1400. I've got 20 miles in SNP, 30 in Del Water Gap, 1.5 miles near Greenwood Lake and a 6 mile section near Orinocco. In other words, I've almost completed a continuous section from Roanoke (VA) to Orange Turnpike (NY) - more than 650 miles (and back)! AT Today = 3.10 miles / G.T. AT = 736.38 miles]

Buena Vista, VA (USA)
[It's been so long since I hiked the AT and, despite blazing hot temperatures and a forecast of rain, I was determined to get back out there! Left my house at 0445 and made great time to Lexington. Got gas in Buena Vista (0745). I was treated to a beautiful sunrise and bright clear skies. I'd planned to put in my miles on Cole/Cold Mountain (FS Road 48) but made a wrong turn (no cell signal) and ended up on the Blue Ridge Parkway (I also saw a huge hound hunt getting started). The detour wasn't bad in itself but it meant I wasn't on the trail (at a completely different trailhead - Spy Rock Road) until 0845 - and it was already getting hot... I had to use a 1 mile approach trail (all uphill) to get to the AT. After that, I headed SOBO towards Hog Camp Gap. There was a noticeable breeze on the ridge and the thick canopy kept me from frying, thankfully. I didn't see any people for almost two hours but enjoyed watching pretty butterflies eating, heard cheerful songbird tunes, marveled at brilliantly colored flowers and startled some wild turkeys into flight. Just before my turnaround at Piney River north fork, I met my first hiker of the day: "Backtrack", a teacher from Staten Island who was working on his last few states south of Vermont. We talked bears, hydration strategies and maximum mileage in a day. After I left him and turned around, I ended up walking for a few miles with Peggy & Kenny ("Mourning Dove" & "Seldom Seen"). A retired couple, they have been section hiking like I have and have completed GA-VA and northern Virginia to Duncannon. They knew about a lot of sections I haven't completed, so the chat will help me in the future. It was nice to be with other people, especially on a hot day like this... I finished my return leg but still had about half a mile to complete so I could get to Spy Rock. I made the climb OK but almost didn't see it. What a difference three months made: the canopy on and around the rock was just getting started back in May but it was completely overgrown today. Once I located it, I clambered up the huge rock for some spectacular views! I had a harder time getting down (had to sit/slide so I didn't break my neck!). Lots of day hikers were still climbing up for their chance as I walked down to my car. I left the trailhead at around 1400, with more than 11 miles to show for my day. I stopped to visit the Montebello Fish Hatchery and got some ice cream at the little sportsman resort in town. Explored my options for Sunday (near the James River) but it started raining on BRP. Called it a day before 1700 - staying in Buena Vista Motel. Tired and sore but feeling great. I want some more!!! AT Today = 4.60 miles / Grand Total AT = 733.28 miles]

Daddy-Daughter Vacation - Day 5
Our last day of the trip... We woke up at 0630 and packed up the campsite. We were on the road by 0730 and ate breakfast at Tudor's Biscuit World (0745) again (mmmmm...). We drove to Hinton and got some gas (0835). We had to drive through town, across the New River and almost all the way back to the Interstate so we could visit the Sandstone Falls. It took awhile to get there but it was well worth the wait. Mollie and I enjoyed a nice nature walk before we had to leave the National River. We picked up some souvenirs at the visitors center (1020), including a National Park Passport book, so Mollie can get stamps at every park we visit! It is great to see her building a passion for travel and outdoor adventure. We "officially" left the area at 1030. Our drive home (retraced our steps - I-64 to US-29 to I-66) was pretty uneventful, with only a short stop for gas ($1.72 a gallon!) in Fishersville (VA) at 1230. We did have some fun watching crazy driver behavior... We ate lunch in the car and dodged lots of distracted drivers. When we arrived at my apartment at 1500, Mollie helped me empty the car and clean our gear. It has been such a great couple of weeks - we've had some great times! Mollie keeps asking when we will go rafting again..

Daddy-Daughter Vacation - Day 4
I had the best sleep in the tent of the whole trip - felt comfortable and didn't need to move for almost seven hours. We were out of bed by 0700 and ate breakfast at the campsite. Mollie and I departed for Hawks Nest State Park at 0830. We visited several overlooks along US-60 and then used a gravel road to reach the river below. I think I remember the same dilemma from 2007: the trams to the jet boat are closed every Wednesday (for maintenance). We weren't deterred, though and took a pleasant (but buggy) nature walk to view some of the old mine sites in the area. After getting our fill of pretty views from above the gorge, we drove west and north. We stumbled across a beautiful near Gauley Bridge and then drove on some other gravel roads, trying to locate river access (we were unsuccessful and gave up to preserve the tender underbelly of "Bessie", our Town & Country). Mollie started expressing interest in a nearby Civil War park (!), so we stopped for a visit to Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park, where we got to see views of the Gauley River after all... We then proceeded to the Summersville Reservoir. Before our swim in the cool mountain waters, we picked up lunch (1235) at Fat Eddie's on the Dam (again, a repeat of 2007 activities). We ate near the beach (1300) and then got in the water. We were practically the only people there (it was a bit overcast) but there were plenty of boaters and RVers across the water. When we'd had our fill (1500), we drove south to Babcock State Park to see their pretty grist mill. Mollie remarked that I turned into a nerd with the lady inside the mill (but I retorted that we now know where grits come from!). We did some more nature walking again before it started to rain. We continued south and west again. We stopped at the ending of the McKendree Road (scene of the "OMG, Dad, what were you thinking?" off road adventure in 2007) and took a picture. If you really want to know what kind of person I am - in travels and in life, just ask Brenna or Erin to tell you what memories that road inspires! Mollie and I then completed our circle around the campground, driving back to Beckley and on to Fayetteville. We did stop for supplies (including some new frozen drinks that I've enjoyed throughout the trip) along the way. Since we'd never heard from the caretakers of the campground since we'd arrived, I visited little country store and learned that was the place to pay - they ran the place on the honor system, I guess. It turned out that the old man who owned the place in 2007 had passed away but the campground was still in the family. I told the owner that we'd thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would definitely return! Back at our campsite, we made a big fire and used the Coleman Stove to cook our dinner (Italian Wedding soup, beanie-wienies, mixed veggies). We made s'mores again and sat around in the dark, recapping our trip. Mollie had started out with the idea that the place was nice to visit but wouldn't be a good place to live. But she started to see my point of view :-) by the end of the trip. We partially packed the car and went to bed early (although I managed to finish my book before falling asleep (around 2200)... Only one more day left.

Daddy-Daughter Vacation - Day 3
We got up much earlier today and said goodbye to our neighbors. When we left the campground (0730), we stopped at Tudor's Biscuit World for breakfast (0750). Basically, Mollie and I were retracing the steps from the 2007 trip... We drove back to the ACE Resort and got equipment for our rafting trip! After checking in (0840), we rode a bus to Thurmond and put our "duckies" in the water (at around 1015) just upriver from Thurmond. We had a great time on the Upper New all day: in addition to the many Class III rapids we went through, we stopped for lunch (BBQ chicken and pork, potato salad, mac and cheese, veggies, tortellini, cookies, pudding) along the river. Other fun activities included: rock jumping (I dared the drop but Mollie didn't budge), duckie battles and wildlife viewing (herons and bald eagles flying, plentiful deer and groundhogs). Our guide was Rich (assisted by Randy, Tonya, Adelaide, Brennan). Mollie started off tentatively ("Dad, you are going to stay close to me, right?") but continued building confidence all day ("Dad, stop following me!" and "This is just like when we went bowling - I can do it myself!"). She only fell in the water once (at "Surprise" Rapids) but that was the hardest one and she insisted on going first (I barely missed her flying raft - and her floating helmet - as I paddled by). We met several nice people (including an active duty Navy family on the PCS move of a lifetime). It rained a bit on us before the day was done but it was generally sunny and pleasant. We were also startled when a huge tree fell, just as we finished our paddle (1530). We rode the bus back through the woods to ACE after our fun-filled day. We had planned to swim in the resort lake but the lines were really long at the welcome center. We settled for reviewing the photo package (we bought one, 1645). Soon after that, we got to watch the personalized rafting trip video with the group we'd met during the day - it was funny and included Mollie's epic spill (we bought that too, 1820). After a very memorable day, we left ACE (1830). Mollie again asked if we could visit Grandview, so we drove down there. The weather was much better this time and we ended up eating dinner we'd packed as we rested in the pleasant evening air. We were treated with some amazing views of the New River from hundreds of feet above. The best overlook (Turkey Spur) was closed but we found several other places where we could enjoy seeing the clouds below and the tiny trains in the gorge. We arrived back at our campsite by 2030. I tried to start another fire (was not as successful because there had been some rain, apparently). The cell signal was intermittent throughout the trip, so talking was definitely an option! :-) We went to bed, pretty tired from our amazing day - Mollie was already planning to visit again so we could take a trip on the Lower New River or the Lower Gauley River...

Daddy-Daughter Vacation - Day 2
Mollie and I didn't rush out of the campsite this morning but we still got going by 0815. As we drove to the ACE Adventure Resort, near Minden, we saw very cool fog/clouds below the NRG Bridge. It turned out that we were a bit late (0845) to be able to raft the same day, so we made plans to come back the following morning. Instead, we bought a horse riding package. While waited for that adventure to begin, we visited the Thurmond visitors center and took a nice nature walk near the railroad tracks. The place had been a huge coal boom town but is now deserted (I heard later that the population is 6). We ate lunch at Burger King in Oak Hill (1045) on the way to Cunard (Equestrian Expeditions) and checked in for our trail ride at 1130. We ended up having a great time (2+ hours) with our guide, Jeremy, and were the only ones on the trip. Mollie rode "Nicki" and I rode "Jaqui" - there was mud was everywhere and the trail consisted of several big hills. The view at turnaround was blocked by fallen tree but we forgot about that while trotting across a huge field (the only place where I wasn't nervous that our sure footed friends would slide right down the mountain). Mollie was very proud of herself because she killed a huge horsefly that was pestering her horse. Afterwards (1430), we took our guide's advice and located the Long Point trail head a few miles away. We walked for about 3.5 miles until we got an amazing view of the bridge. Mollie fell and skinned her knees but we both managed to keep going. Before dinner, we went back to the visitors center at Canyon Rim before it closed and got some more information about local activities. We got gas (1635) picked up more supplies at Walmart (1650). Funny - it was the same thing we did in 2007 but the place seemed brand new... We then went to Dirty Ernie's (also recommended by Jeremy) and ate dinner: ribs and BBQ chicken, onion rings, salad and veggies and pudding (finished ata 1745). I'd told Mollie about our previous visit to Grandview so we took a drive down there. Unfortunately, it started pouring right when we got there and it never let up. I wondered how our nearly 10 year old tent was doing, so we drove back to Chestnut Creek (1830). We found out (for the first time but not the last) that the gorge is so big and the weather patterns are so diverse that there had been no rain at all at our campsite! We made the best of things: Mollie got a fire going and I walked over to meet a dad and his kids who had set up at the campsite next door. Like the previous night, Mollie and I talked a lot and we didn't get to sleep until around 11:00 PM. The temperatures must have been about 10-15 degrees cooler than home - ahhhh... We were both feeling very content in this amazing wild place!

Daddy-Daughter Vacation - Day 1
I decided to take Mollie on a trip I'd done with Brenna and Erin (see AUG 2007). We left my apartment at 0900 and drove to West Virginia - destination: New River Gorge! We made good time via I-66, US-29 and I-64 (Mollie slept most of the way). We got a gas fillup in Waynesboro (1135). Our first stop in WV was at the Sandstone visitors center (1345). We ate lunch in Beckley (1435) on the way to Fayetteville. We were able to locate the campground where we'd stayed previously (Chestnut Creek) but couldn't find the owner or manager. After waiting for awhile, Mollie and I decided to set up our tent and wait to see what happened. We were joined by a giant flock of (friendly) chickens! Once we felt organized (1645), we headed out to explore the area. Unfortunately, we learned that the rafting place that was nearby (Wildwater Expeditions) had gone out of business. Undaunted, we went to get supplies at Walmart (1750) and managed to get the name of another outfit (ACE). We stopped at the Canyon Rim visitors center (closed) on the way back and took a walk out to see the famous bridge from an overlook. Later, we actually drove down into the gorge. Back at camp (1900), we got a good fire going and ate dinner. Mollie made s'mores and we enjoyed the pleasant weather for several hours. We had lots of good conversation and read our books before turning in for the night. Mollie's was psyched to be camping!

Chincoteague, VA (USA)
Today started early (0630) and we were initially worried to find it raining. Fortunately, the weather improved as the morning progressed. After checking out of our hotel (Navy Gateway Inn) at Wallops Island SCSC, we drove to Chincoteague and ate breakfast at McDonalds (0730). We then headed over to the Combined School to park. Next, we caught a shuttle bus to Memorial Park and then walked a bit farther (to Pony Swim Lane, where we'd been told we would get a better view of the event). When we arrived, we encountered mud that was about 5-7 inches deep. I was going to suggest we try another location, but Mollie forged ahead! We positioned ourselves on a small hill that overlooked the swim zone. We had to stand in blistering sun for close to two hours - fortunately, we brought lots of water, a chair and an umbrella. At around 1015, the harbor patrol popped red smoke, signaling the start of the crossing. But it was worth the wait! It reminded me of the Triple Crown races I've attended: five minutes of excitement (swimming and lots of neighing) as the pony herd made its way to where we were. We had a great view! Afterwards, we returned through the mud to the road and followed Beebe Road and Main Street towards the Carnival Grounds. We got drinks at a small produce stand, talked to locals in front of their homes (so friendly!) and found a good place to watch the pony parade. We were treated with an amazing view as the Saltwater Cowboys drove the horses to the auction area. We wanted to stay longer but needed to get back home - we were on the fifth shuttle bus back to our car. Thanks to the state and local police, we got off the island pretty quickly. We made our way back to US-13, stopping for gas and snacks at Royal Farms on Wallops Island (1315). We later bought souvenirs before heading home (1330). The drive to the Potomac (via US-13, US-50 and I-495) went well and we were safely home three hours later. What a great trip, filled with lots of amazing memories! Mollie is already plotting a return for next year's Pony Penning Days...
