Washington, DC (USA)

[last day of the year! - due to some requirements at work, I had to go in for a few hours - made the best of that, though, by trying something I've been wanting to do since I moved to our new home: use the Metro all day (no car) - it started with a little research on the schedules for the (many) bus lines that go down the busy street about four blocks away - I found a good (early) morning arrive time and (mistakenly) thought I needed to go to that location (turns out I could just stand at any bus sign on the street and all buses would stop for me...) - it was a little chilly to wait, but I actually got picked up and arrived at the station almost at the same time as I usually do with my car (roughly 15 minutes lost by using the bus) - worked all morning, closing out business for the year - ate lunch with my Subway gift card (thanks, Carolyn!) - around noon, I headed over to the Metro Station and used Yellow and Red to get over to Judiciary Square, which I hoped would be near the Supreme Court - it wasn't, so I got to walk about 10 blocks to get there (and learned that Union Station is MUCH closer...) - saw a lot of media and protestor activity at the Capitol ("Fiscal Cliff" issues) but avoided it and went into the Library of Congress to do some research - took about four pages of good notes and left early enough that it was still light out - had to wait a while for trains for some reason, but after only one change (Orange to Yellow) made it back to where I normally park - took the same bus I used in the morning (it was waiting there!) and made it home in about 20 minutes - all in all, today proved I can get around without a car (if I really wanted to...) - even the walk home from the stop (about 1/4 to 1/2 a mile) was good for me (and provided humor to the kids: "Who is that guy walking down the street? Oh, it is Dad!") - stayed up just long enough to see it was 2013 (and hear the fireworks all around our area) - Happy New Year!]

Washington, DC (USA)

[despite our fun experience at the Zoo Lights (National Zoo) earlier this year, Mollie and I missed out on a chance to see more animals (some areas were closed on that visit) - we made another attempt today - the weather was actually very nice - we arrived at the zoo a little after they opened (close to 1030) and we walked around for more than two hours - we got great views (and pictures) of the giant pandas and elephants - we also explored several other new areas (Small Mammal House, Amazon Forest, lions & tigers, invertebrates, etc.) - lots of walking again - I took off my coat several times... - walked back to Woodley Park - Zoo station (kind of a hike, but weather was fine) and got a quick bite at McDonalds - made it home pretty quickly - we like the Zoo!]

Arlington, VA (USA)

[I've been bugging the girls about some gift cards they got for their birthday early in 2012 - they never spent them when they still lived in Texas - now, they had more (from Christmas) - I guess I am a little tired of the "I have nothing to wear" refrain, so I "made" them get ready to go shopping around 0900 today - we drove over to the Metro station and took the train to Pentagon City (which I had scoped out on the previous afternoon's commute home) - I knew their minds (and/or attitudes) would change once they saw the stunning size of the Fashion Centre mall... - we got there early enough (1015) that there was almost nobody there - I had planned to convert some Euro coins at the kiosk, but they only took paper money (...) - as for the girls' shopping: it turned out that the mall had almost every store their cards were from, and we spent about four hours (including lunch at the food court) shopping and exploring - we had several big bags when we headed back to the Metro platform - unfortunately, the trains were so far apart that we weren't going to get ours for about 15 minutes - I convinced everyone to take the train two stops down to Reagan National Airport and we explored some shops there (Nicky seemed excited about a couple, since they are outside the security area and can be accessed quickly and easily - made it back to the platform just in time for our train - home a little before 1600, with lots of loot...]

Washington, DC (USA)

[it was Daddy-Daughter day today, although only Mollie wanted to get up early enough to go with me to the office... - we did leave a little later than I normally do, but there was no one on the train and we made it into the City quite quickly (0900) - Mollie was pretty proud to work with me, helping with some of my projects and playing with her Webkins during some breaks I had - my officemates were good sports, welcoming her as a new engineer - we ate lunch (Subway) in my office and she had fun drawing on my white board until around 1400 - after that, we left my building and started exploring the city - we started at the National Botanic Garden (near the Capitol) - at first, I was worried to see the huge line, but it turned out to only be for those people who wanted to see the model train arrangement - we went in a separate entrance and marveled at the beautiful flowers and amazing trees in that building (it was quite warm, too) - after around 45 minutes there, we walked down to the area near the Smithsonian Castle where I knew there were some art galleries that Mollie hadn't visited - we even went in the Hirshorn Gallery (modern art) and Mollie noted several "pieces" that a 10 year old could have executed (although, it might not have been his/her choice to paint a big square canvas blue...) - we moved over to the Sackler Gallery, where there was an outstanding exhibit called "Roads of Arabia" - most of the items were on loan from Saudi Arabia - there were some old doors that were once used on the Kabaa in Mecca - we enjoyed some other things before we left (walking through parts of the Freer Gallery) - by 1700, we had made it back to the Metro Station and headed home - we were both tired by that point, so we didn't stop for happy hour (lol!) - Mollie had lots of stories to tell, but the teens mostly just said "meh..." - still, Dad was pretty happy to show off his work!]

Mason Neck, VA (USA)

[I had a chance to do some errands today (things I've been putting off) - as much as I cringe to think about heading to the store on Christmas Eve, I didn't know when I'd get another chance... - Mollie came with me to Walmart, the drycleaners and gas station (free cookies after our fill-up!) and the Base Class Six (for adult concoctions to celebrate the holidays) - after all my errands were complete, I took Mollie over towards Mason Neck, where I hoped we could tour Gunston Hall (decorated for Christmas) - unfortunately, we arrived five minutes before they closed for the day (earlier than usual, but understandable) - decided to drive to the nearby National Wildlife Refuge - we took a hike, looking for evidence of eagles and ospreys - we didn't see those, but we did find a marsh with TONS of tundra swans and various other waterfowl - what a sight! - we had a great hike (complete with some "off-roading") and got the bonus of snow flurries as we were finishing! - since it got too cold to do much else, we drove into the State Park and took a look at their offerings (planning for the Spring!) - after that, we headed home and joined the rest of the family in preparations for Christmas!]

[Mollie and I did some shopping via Metro today - I had heard about some opportunities near the station at Crystal City, so we decided to go there first - after we got off the train, we found there were several choices - the "mall" was underground and had lots of little specialty shops (with a few restaurant) - for just a few days before Christmas, the place was almost deserted... - we did locate some good stores, though: a military specialty store with really cool commemorative items, a store with Turkish items (we got some great things there) and a store that made personalized items (we bought key chains for the kids whose names never show up at a souvenir shop (especially, Mollie and Brenna) - after that, we wandered around on the opposite side of the mall and located additional places to re-visit (already closed), including an ATM for our bank... - got back on the train and headed into the City, bound for Union Station (to see some holiday decorations) - by switching trains a few more times this weekend, Mollie achieved a new status: "rider of all the different colored Metro lines" (she is justifiably proud!) - made it to Union Station and we immediately got to see a huge tree and some gigantic wreaths at the entrance - we explored the offerings inside and found many more specialty stores than I expected (it was also very busy) - we'd reached dinner by now, so we ate at the Thunder Grill (good) - after that, we explored a little more and had some gelato before heading home - our purchases will make good Christmas surprises!]

[normal work day - we did have lunch with our customer near our office (rare) - after work, we headed over to an "End of the World Party" that Sabrina and Ashley had organized (1600) - we started at Penn Social (between Metro Center and Chinatown) - it was empty when we got there but filled up a lot by the time we left - Eddie, Ian, James and I joined the organizers - the place had board games, darts, bean-bag throwing (!), etc. - fun - some folks started to leave around 1930, but Ashley asked us to come with her to a JMU reunion nearby - we headed over to Farragut Square on the Metro and spent about two hours (at the Black Finn Saloon) with here college friends - everyone was in good spirits (despite drizzly, cold evening) - and our many toasts to the EOW appear to have worked (late posting)... - got home around 2230]

Egg Harbor Township, NJ (USA)

[got up at 0600 - got ready and departed Borgata around 0700 - stopped for breakfast at Burger King and then met Erica and Loretta at their office - spent two hours testing new software (some successes) - drove over to Human Factors Lab at 1000 to help with Sabrina's sales pitch (pretty interesting and successful) - lunch at Chili's before leaving town - US-40 almost to Delaware River (got gas on the way) - listening to radio about Elementary School Shooting - made good time back to I-95 but then got stopped by lots of traffic (construction) - decided to get off on DE-1 and then used DE-71 to get over to US-301 - very easy drive - weather nice and no traffic all the way back to US-50 and Bay Bridge - arrived at Beltway around 1530 - slowed down a bit, but made it to the house at 1600 - good to see kids - they were decorating the Christmas Tree that evening - later, watched some Christmas Specials with Mollie on TV - bed around midnight]

[Another early day - no carpooling - made it to work early after stops at Wawa and the front gate - another great day (lunch in cafeteria) - Sharon very pleased with our progress! - finished around 1700 and wrapped up conversations and work tasks by 1800 - Bill headed back towards Rockville as we left - I went back to the casino - Sabrina finished shopping and met me at the Noodles of the World (NOW) restaurant inside the Borgata - good food! - lost some more money tonight (watched Sabrina play for an extra hour with just $1 bets at the craps table - funny) - back to my room around 2130 - packed and went to bed early]

[up around 0630 - worked on the computer in the lobby - met Sabrina around 0745 and we carpooled again to work - stopped for breakfast at Wawa and then met Bill at the gate - second day of our meeting was very productive again before lunch - ate with Rick and chatted about future prospects - back to work around 1300 and made amazing progress in getting through our material - finished around 1700 today - immediately drove around the airport (testing my new badge access on the way) and, using Jimmy Lead's Road went to Galloway, where we had a Team dinner at the Gourmet Italian Restaurant - everyone in good spirits - food was outstanding - afterwards, we went back to Borgata (Bill followed us again) and we spent another fun evening on the casino floor - this time, everyone lost - Sabrina went to bed and Bill and I explored some more and chatted until around 2300 - fell asleep relatively quickly]

[got up early (since this was the first time we'd be driving to work from this far away...) - met Sabrina at 0740 and we carpooled back to Egg Harbor Township - used US-30 and drove into Absecon - stopped for breakfast at Dunkin Donuts just as we were getting lost... - eventually found our bearings and followed signs to the airport - arrived a little early and then set up the IT and webex bridge - our meeting started on time with lots of familiar faces (almost everyone from our weekly telcons) - got a lot of work done before lunch - ate at the cafeteria (good) - back to work until around 1600 - adjourned slightly early and drove to the Bonefish Grill for Happy Hour (and dinner) with everyone - didn't leave until around 2030 - Bill followed us back to the Borgata and then we all went down to play on the casino floor - Bill and Sabrina lost, but I broke even - ended up back in my room around 2200 (after a little exploring around the hotel) - didn't fall asleep immediately...]

Atlantic City, NJ (USA)

[another business trip to New Jersey - started the day with some work "Admin" and finished my packing - left the house (and got gas) and crossed the Potomac at 1000 - stopped for about 20 minutes for my Monday morning telcon - back on the road (I-495) and onto US-50 to the Bay Bridge - VERY FOGGY - crossed and got on US-301 - stopped at the rest area (familiar now...) - used US-301 to US-40 and then got on I-95 - used I-295 to cross the Delaware Memorial Bridge - back on to US-40 all the way to Egg Harbor Township - made it to the "off-site" by 1400 - took care of passes (etc.) and then did my PM telcon - finished around 1430 and then met up with the local team-members - spent about two hours preparing for our week's work - afterwards, went over to East Bay Crab for drinks and dinner (Sabrina and Sharon made it too) - around 2000, left for our hotel (this time, the Borgata Casino) - following Sabrina, who got us lost down near the Absecon light house (wow - right in town!) - eventually found the right parking garage - checked in and then watched some TV - was going to meet up with Sabrina in the casino, but by the time I got there she had already left - made some money this time (nice) and then headed back to the room - prepared for the next morning and then went to bed]

[Mollie and I wanted to see the famous "Zoo Lights" at the National Zoo - we got an earlier start this afternoon (1500) - waited for a train for more than 20 minutes at Huntington... - fortunately, we benefited from the same Metro reroute (Yellow Line to Eastern Market on Blue Line track) - switched to Red Line at Metro Center and arrived at Woodley Park station by about 1615 and walked up Connecticut Avenue to the Zoo Entrance - weather was poor (overcast and dark early), but the lights showed up very well (even before sunset) - walked around in some of the areas that were about to close (Asia Trail) - usually, this is mobbed - but today we were treated with very few people - made it possible to see a fishing cat, red panda, clouded leopard and other furry friends of the Giant Panda (not visible) - later saw reptiles and apes (and Mollie's favorite - Przewalski's Horse) - we enjoyed several great light shows (with music) and fancifal animal displays - when we reached the end, the security man told us we should head back up the hill to get back to the Metro, so we walked the length of the Zoo Lights again - before getting back on the train, we had a nice dinner at Pasta Italiana (it was run by an Indian family - I swear there was some curry in the pasta! - pretty good food, though) - it started to pour as we finished eating (1900) and then a ton of police cars arrived at the station - decided we should leave... - waited for a red line train for a bit and then decided to catch an Orange Line train to Rosslyn - after a longer delay for the Yellow Line, we were on our way home - arrived at the house close to 2130 - fun day!]

[we got a late start, but Mollie and I were able to go into the City to see the National Christmas Tree tonight - we left the house around 1900 and took the Yellow Line (running modified route on Blue Line Track - convenient) - we made it to McPherson Square and walked around the White House to see the beautiful tree - it was mobbed - we spent some time there enjoying the view and making our way through big crowds - we saw some things I missed last year: Santa's workshop and a Nativity Scene - afterwards, we walked back to a gift shop we'd spotted when we toured the White House (see NOV 2012) - went inside and Mollie asked if we could buy the annual White House ornament - when we purchased it, the gift shop owner pointed us towards a mock-up of the Oval Office, where we got to take some great photos! - headed towards home on the Metro - we had to wait a bit (and change trains at King Street) - had wanted to visit a few more places, but it was actually quite late (2200) and we just went to the car]

[woke up early - tried to convince Mollie to go with me into the City, but she was busy looking for Christmas decorations... - took the Metro to L'Enfant and walked over to the Library of Congress - found the Microform Reading Room and stayed several hours, looking at old city directories (found a lot of good stuff) - hot dog stand lunch - walked around near the Capitol (nice day!) and on the Mall for a short time - saw (nearly complete?) African-American Smithsonian building (they have made some amazing progress over the last few months!) - took the Metro back to King Street and enjoyed some beer and appetizer while watching five football games (championships) - headed back to my car eventually - more football at home]

[up early - experimenting with Metro today on the way to meetings in Rockville - used the Yellow Line like normal, but went all the way to Gallery Place and switched to Red Line - made it out to Rockville after about 65 minutes on the train - barely missed the #43 bus and had to wait for 20 minutes for the next one - eventually made it to my meeting (nearly two hours door-to-door - experiment proves driving is better...) - meetings all day - Sabrina drove me back to metro (Braddock Road): much quicker! - Yellow Line back to car and then home]

[up early to see everyone off - visiting most of the morning - took the family home and had a nice lunch - then drove (with Mollie) back to the Gaylord Hotel to pick up Mary and Leo - easy drive back to BWI Airport (using I-495 and I-95) - we made it on time - we had seen some huge traffic jams on the way, so we used I-97 (to Annapolis) and then US-50 back to the Beltway - back home by 1500 - watched more football until around 1900, when Bob came to get me - we drove back to the Gaylord and met Chuck and Tim at the National Pastime Sports Bar - watched Notre Dame win their 12th game (National Championship Game bound!) - got home around 2345 - watched TV until after midnight...]

[woke up very early - drove back to our house to check on cat and pick up some items for the family - regular routine (work) - train nearly empty - worked from 0730 until 1330 - walked over to meet Ellen and David (and his parents) at the National Archives - had lunch at District Chophouse & Brewery - after a few hours there, we walked over to Ford's Theatre, but it was too crowded - split up and I got on the train and headed to Joe Theisman's to meet the rest of the guys - had some drinks there and then took the train to my car - headed back to the hotel - visited for a few more hours (football)]

[what a day! - up later than the other days - breakfast at hotel (Holiday Inn Express on Blackhorse Pike in Atlantic City) - arrived at conference room at 0830L - had to go help Bill get in before 0900 - very busy day (meetings and paperwork) - plan was to finish early, but we didn't - lunch at the cafeteria in our building - lots of worry about Hurricane Sandy... - finished at 1800 - skipped dinner and drove home (leading Sabrina, since it was dark) - used US-40, I-295, I-95 and I-495 and made it in just over three hours]

Columbia, MD (USA)

[couldn't get the kids up early enough, but it was a beautiful Fall day - couldn't stay at the house... - dropped off some drycleaning - thought about visiting Carolyn, actually, but she was too busy to get together this weekend - drove north via I-495 and I-270 out to I-70 - started looking for gas in Hagerstown (seemed expensive) - drove across into Pennsylvania on I-81 and figured out that they were a $3.999 per gallon (yikes!) - drove along some back roads (farms, fields, rolling hills) - saw sign for James Buchanon Birthplace, right along the Mason-Dixon line - drove back into Maryland and filled up the tank (brisk) - used I-81 (south) to get back to I-70 and then drove into the mountains - beautiful colors starting to appear in the trees - a little rain as I switched to I-68 and drove through .... Gap - kept going through beautiful scenery - found pretty Rocky Gap State Park (complete with mountain chalet) - soon after, saw a sign for a wood-fire pizza kitchen (Puccini's) - stopped for a late lunch (1400L) - watched football and had some great food with the locals - discussed ski areas, rail trail (bikepath) and C&O Canal NHP - took my leave around 1530L and drove west again, through the pretty town of Cumberland - everything meets there... - taking a hint from one of the locals I met, I drove as far as Frostburg to see the bright colors (it was true) - backtracked to Cumberland and took MD-51 to the border with West Virginia (crossed at Wiley Ford) and used WV-28 to drive south - lots of pretty views of the River and mountains - stopped briefly in Romney before turning East again (US-50) - very pretty drive through the mountains back to Virginia - amazing views - drove through Winchester (via VA-37) to US-18 - turned back towards home on I-66 - used Fairfax County Parkway (and Old Keene Mill Road to get home) - watched Notre Dame versus Miami football game - hard to believe it has been 25 years since the big matchup that won the National Championship (see OCT 1988)...]

[up around 0700L - ate breakfast - finished packing - took care of some work emails and wrote up summaries of our workshop for my customers - on the phone with Sharon (about action items for next week, support adjustments, etc.) for about an hour - took care of additional work phone calls before checking out of the Residence Inn (1030L) - leaving Somers Point, I drove back to Egg Harbor to get some security issues resolved before departing the area (1145L) - used US-40 to get back to the Delaware River and then crossed into the Delaware - traffic caused me to divert along the Eastern Shore (DELMARVA) - used I-95, US-13 and DE-1 - got off the toll road at Smyrna and started using U-13 - started seeing evidence that it was a NASCAR Race Weekend - decided to pause my drive home and catch some of the activities at the Dover International Speedway (AKA Monster Mile) - caught some lunch at Wendy's before parking (free) - spent some time walking around near the RV Park - lots of vendors and "groupies" - tickets were pretty steep (just for a "Junior Varsity" race - K&N Pro Series) - still, I wanted to see the Nationwide and Sprint Series Practice Session - General Admission seats were pretty good (found one about 25 rows up right next to the start/finish line) - saw all the drivers taking their turns to prep for the race weekend - great experience - departed the track for a bit to explore the vendor area and marvel at the Monster statue near the entrance (!!!) - watched the development race - many of the drivers were making their first start at the track and there were plenty of crashes (and clapping by the fans) - some of the drivers may eventually appear in the other series... - took my leave at about 125 of 150 laps - got back on US-13 and then used DE-8 to get to the Bay Bridge - saw lots of Amish buggies in the dusk... -stopped for fuel and snack in Hartly - turned on DE-44 and then switched to DE/MD-300 until it intercepted US-301 - it was dark by that point - on US-50 and then it started raining - made it across the Bay Bridge OK and then fought my way through the weather to I-495 - traffic not too bad, but still affected by the bad drivers! - arrived home around 2100L]

[it was tough to get up this morning, but I did... - breakfast with Bill (Jim passed on the meeting) - Bill had to check out, so we were late leaving the hotel - we got stuck in a traffic jam and arrived at the Workshop at 0915L - very productive morning (one break) - lunch around noon (Chick-fil-A with Erica and Bill) - back to work - finished around 1700L - Jim itching to leave for hotel, but got some other networking and admin completed before we left (last day) - worked in the room for a couple of hours - had "dinner" again at the hotel just before they closed it up for the night - later met Jim and Rob for dinner at Charlie's - we watched the first half of the Thursday Night Football Game (Ravens/Browns) before heading back to the Residence Inn at Somers Point - finished up some work emails and packed a bit - bed around 2230L]

Atlantic City, NJ (USA)

[up early again - met Jim and Bill for breakfast - over to Egg Harbor for Day 2 of the workshop (0800L) - earlier start and very busy morning (no break!) - early lunch (1115) - ate with Bill at Chili's - back to work around 1245L - non-stop until after 1700L again - Jim abandoned me but Bill took me back to the hotel - made some plans with Sharon and Rick to get together but they ended up passing - ate "dinner" at the hotel (comfort food) - after Bill's run, we drove over to the Anchorage (very old pub) to relax - around 2200L, Bill asked me if we could drive to the Boardwalk for a bit - decided it would be a good experience - used Main Street and Margate Boulevard to get to Ventnor Avenue - lots of lights and very poor pavement - made it into the casino area OK, but it took a bit to find a parking place (lots of "interesting" characters walking around, too - I had the same impression during my JUN 2012 visit) - we found a good spot near the Tropicana and went inside - it was actually very similar to many of the casinos in Las Vegas - The Quarter was really good (replica of old Havana near dusk - we found some tables (craps and roulette, some cards) - I passed on that and explored the hotel - lots of great things to do and see - meanwhile, Bill was winning lots of money... - after he cashed out, we walked out on the Boardwalk and took a look at few more places - before I knew it, it was around 0100L! - drove back to our hotel via US-322 (Black Horse Pike) and Main Street/Shore Drive - in my room at the Residence Inn Somers Point, I fell asleep at close to 0200L]

[up very early - breakfast with Jim and Bill - drove up to Egg Harbor with Jim (0800L) and prepped with Sharon, Erica and Loretta before the workshop got started - long meetings all morning (one break before lunch): got a lot done, though - had lunch with Bill and Loretta at Godfather's Italian Grill - back for a full afternoon of meetings (finished after 1700L) - rode back to the Residence Inn in Somers Point with Jim - after getting on the internet in my room (finally!) and taking care of work emails, I met Bill and Jim for the walk down to the Crab Trap restaurant - it was mobbed, but Sharon had already reserved us a table - good meal - left late (walked back) - very brisk and windy - more work emails and other projects - bed late again]

[got oil change in the morning - bank deposits - teleconference (cell phone) - left DC area around 1030L - drove to Atlantic City via I-495, I-95 to I-295 (Delaware River) and then US-40 (lunch at Burger King and gas fillup on the way) - got to Egg Harbor around 1430L and took care of security matters - drove over to meet up with Mike for a bit (1500L) before getting together (nearby) with Sharon and Erica - worked (prep) until around 1730L - followed Sharon to dinner at Ventura's Offshore Cafe in Linwood - also joined by Erica and her husband - around 2030L, drove to my hotel (Residence Inn on Mays Landing Road) in Somers Point and then met up with Jim (another hour of workshop prep) - had trouble with internet connectivity, so couldn't get everything done for work... - bed late]

Moving Trip (Part 2) - Day 2

[up at 0500L - got started out of Harrisonburg very quickly, hoping to beat the traffic jams on I-66 - was NOT successful - back up began well west of Gainesville - manaqed to exit the Interstate on Prince William Parkway and made my way down to Woodbridge - arrived at U-Haul center around 0800L - had problems getting my storage building (it was supposed to be free for 30 days, but they only had indoor storage - this would require about 20 trips with a dolly and elevator) - decided this wasn't for me - went looking for a better storage place and found one near Bob's place - got my things out of the truck in about two hours (got "moral support" from nice man who was in a unit close-by) - went back to the apartment to dry off and get cooler - then drove back over to Lorton to drop off the U-Haul - went next door and "hoteled" for my work for about five and half hours (cool inside - was able to do my teleconference just fine) - on the way back to the apartment, stopped for a relaxing dinner at Olympian's Restaurant (great gyro!) - when I finally lay down in bed, I realized how exhausted I really was and fell right to sleep...]

Moving Trip (Part 2) - Day 1

[woke up at 0400L - had a quick bite to eat and then drove back to the CAT scales (full weight) - left the city around 0500L - saw a great sunrise over Lake Ray Hubbard - used I-30 all the way into Arkansas (posted my Facebook status in Texarkana...) - switched to I-40 - had to fuel the truck a lot of times throughout the day (took about $100 to fill it each time!) - no traffic jams (hit cities at perfect times and saw very little contruction) - wanted to stop, but needed to make it as far as possible so I could fit in some work tomorrow - started to get tired of the driving around the time I passed Knoxville - was relieved to see I-81 exit, just as it was getting dark - kept going until I was well into Virginia - finally had enough as I approached Harrisonburg (around midnight) - found a hotel there and got settled for a (short) night of sleep - loud neighbors and security sirens... - drove around 1250 miles today, blowing away my old record (from the 1990s)]

[worked in Chantilly for most of the morning (networking breakfast, work wrap-up) - on the way back to Alexandria, I stopped to check out the "hoteling" options at our Lorton satellite office - also took a look at the U-Haul location that Nicky picked for our drop-off - after that, I went back to the apartment - changed, packed - drove back to Lorton and left my car in the U-Haul parking lot - took the bus from the stop across the street (long ride via some back roads - found COSTCO and NOVA) to Franconia-Springfield Station - Metro to Reagan National - picked up souvenirs - dinner at Panda Express - on-time for my 2020 departure from DCA - my American Airlines aircraft was only one third full full of passengers... - Nicky and girls picked me up at DFW - fun with Waze app on the way home - bed late]

[shopping and a haircut in the afternoon (HOT!) - met up at Eddie's (for his birthday party) around 1830 - stayed there (pizza and margaritas) until around 2100 - took Metro from Braddock Road to Farragut West - walked down 18th Street NW to the Public Bar near Dupont Circle - I can't even remember when I last tried to get into a club with a giant line... - eventually made it inside (around 2200) - went straight to the roof (for a VIP table to celebrate) - everyone having a great time - music loud and entire stucture vibrating - lots of smokers... - several folks from work arrived a bit later - the place got more and more crowded - it never seemed to cool down at all, despite several fans and water misters pointing down to the crowd - witnessed one fight between two girls who spilled drinks on each other - stayed until around 0200 - walked back to Metro, took train back to Braddock Road and then walked back to Eddie's - drove home (tired, but still sweating...)]

[working on items for rental agreement - scanned documents for Nicky (new schools) - got a text from some co-workers that they were having a cookout in Old Town and they asked me to join them - drove over to Eddie's apartment around 1600 - had a great time for several hours (burgers, pasta salad, drinks, etc.) - party spilled outside (despite the 37+ C temperatures) - row house July 4th celebration (neighbors from far and near brought their BBQ, mixed drinks, other side dishes) - had a very good time - as it got dark, everyone followed Sabrina to her house on the Potomac so we could watch the fireworks in DC - we arrive as the display had already begun (very impressive) and we stayed for a while afterwards, watching folks on the District and Maryland side continue to launch their own fireworks - lots of boaters - left and drove over to Burke (via I-495, I-95, Fairfax County Parkway and Sydenstricker Road) to drop off our deposit and rental application fee - had to text with the landlord to find the right place to drop it, but found it in the end - saw lots of town fireworks (Springfield and Fairfax ?) on the way there (and the way home) but the most impressive display was the approaching (GIANT) thunderstorm - still made it back to the house (using Old Keene Mill Road and Fairfax County Parkway) by 2300...]

[took care of finances in the AM - did some shopping later (prep for Tim and Elizabeth's party) - evidence of the massive storm that took out power around the city, but we were unscathed - looked for houses later in the afternoon - may have found one we can rent in a good location (called Nicky to get in touch with the landlord) - headed across the Potomac River around 1745 - made it to Tim's (at National Harbor) right as they were getting ready for the party - met some of their friends and got to see Megan (visiting this week) - found out about a travel app called "Waze" and downloaded it (should be helpful) - stayed long enough to have dinner and watch two fireworks displays down on the River (2130) - they have a great view! - drove home soon afterwards and stayed up late watching movies...]

New York, NY (USA)

[Bob came up with the idea to visit New York City (for the Belmont Stakes) this week - I was up for the trip! - we woke up really early to catch a bus (pretty cheap, actually) - it was my first trip to the Big Apple since Spring Break during college (see MAR 1988) - right before we left, I found information on the Internet about the World Trade Center (9/11) Memorial and managed to print tickets (the site said entry would be quicker that way) - we drove over to Eisenhower Avenue and caught the Metro into Washington, DC - we arrived a Gallery Place around 0900L, the time when the bus was supposed to leave - it was actually closing up its doors, but I managed to catch it and hold it long enough for us to get on - we made pretty good time out of the city, using I-95 almost all the way - the bus had wireless, but no plug for charging... - we saw some good scenery, something I haven't seen for a long time (since I avoid NYC, typically) - the view we got when we arrived in West New York (for the Tunnel) was tremendous (could see the new World Trade Center) - after getting dropped off at Penn Station, we made our way into the Subway System - Bob had a ticket already, but I tried to buy one (with "help" from a local) - we got on a train headed downtown and got off right near the site of the old World Trade Center - before we went in at our scheduled time (1400L), we both got some great hot dogs and sausages (pretty pricy) - we then went into the WTC complex - having a ticket made it really easy (there was a huge line waiting to get them onsite) - we walked around the Memorial for about an hour - it was very moving, seeing the old "footprints" of the tall buildings, now filled up with cascading waterfalls and pools with walls around the top that listed each of the names of the people who died - we missed a chance to see inside the new museum, which won't open for a few more months - making our way back to the subway, we headed back to Penn Station - there, we bought tickets for the Long Island Expressway - when we got on, headed for Belmont, we were joined by thousands of festive fans - it wasn't as good as Churchill Downs, but it made my second leg of the Triple Crown Race Sites memorable (see MAY 1991) - it was great to see the life in the Boroughs, since it was warm and the train went through several pretty neighborhoods - we had to switch trains as we approached Belmont - and we saw even more fans while we waited on the platform - the special train emptied out at Belmont and we walked in with everyone else - we bought cheap general entry tickets and then found some beer - by this point, my phone was almost dead, so I charged it at a convenient outlet while eating and drinking - we had learned a few days before that "I'll Have Another" (who was flirting with history) had scratched from the race, so it was a little anti-climactic - still, we tried to bet (lines were HUGE) and found a good place to watch some of the earlier races - there were sprinkles throughout the afternoon, but the rain held off until the main event - our return bus trip was set for 2000L and we didn't want to be late - so, we watched the call to post and then headed towards the train after they departed the starting gate - we could hear the roar of the crowd, but avoided the rush that occurred right after the race ended - the train made good time (even with the switch again) and we arrived a Penn Station around 1900L - there was actually an earlier bus (from the same company we used this morning) so we inquired if we could use it - we were in luck, not only did they say yes, but we left immediately - traffic was horrible on the way home, so we were happy we made the earlier ride... - Nicky called me and we talked about our day in the City - but then my phone died completely - we arrived back in Chinatown around midnight - there was a huge line for the return trip to NYC (this bus does cycles, I guess) - I haven't hung out near the Verizon Center after midnight: whew! - lots of drunks and seedy characters - but Bob and I made it on the Metro and arrived back at our car without much trouble - what a day!]

[after finishing errands in Kingstowne, drove on Fairfax County Parkway to I-66 - stopped for gas in Marshall - drove out to Front Royal (1000L) - nice little town on the edge of the Shenandoah National Park (canoeing capital ?) - drove into the park and travelled on Skyline Drive for a few hours - stopped for souvenirs at Elkwallow - after checking out one of the tunnels, drove back to US-211 and then went down the mountains to Luray and I-81 - drove north - got off interstate just north of Winchester (VA-7) and drove east to US-340 - then north into West Virginia - got on Charlestown Pike (WV-9) and back into Virginia - exploring and wine tasting (stopped at Hillsborough Vinyards) - drove back to VA-7 (stopped for pie in Leesburg at Mom's Applepie Bakery - calls to Phil and Lee and Kim - drove east on Leesburg Pike (explored the area a little as I made my way back towards Great Falls - arrived at Kim's Parish around an hour before Mass - read for a while and then met up with her and Jeremy - afterwards, we drove into Great Falls and met David for dinner at Peking Delight (had a great time) - after that, drove back to I-495 using Georgetown Pike - talked for Brenna for several hours (mostly about High School and Virginia)]

[most exciting day of the trip - couldn't get the Twins out of bed early, but took Mollie back to the Arbuckle Mountains in Oklahoma for some fun - no traffic on I-35 all the way to the Red River (Mollie train whistle) - stopped for gas in Marietta, Oklahoma - continued without delay to Turner Falls in Davis (arrived at 1000L) - we were early enough there were very few people - waded in the lower pool (very cool water) and explored up the river - lots of little water falls - after a few hours, we had some lunch - after that, took a shuttle ride up to the HUGE falls (there was another pool there) - more and more people coming all day - after waiting for a VERY long time for a shuttle bus back to our car, decided to walk - it was very crowded and there wasn't much fun left by that point - Mollie had wanted to return to the nearby Arbuckle Wilderness, but we already been there (see MAR 2011) - instead, we drove north again and visited the G. W. Exotic Animal Park - what a treat! - we got the "works" package and (in addition to the spectacular exhibits of bears, lions, tigers and monkeys) we were able to go "behind the scenes" to hold baby animals and see some rare Ligers, Tigons and Taligers (cross breeds between Lions and Tigers) - we had a great time and wouldn't have left at 1700L except that it was nearly two hours back to Fort Worth - made great time back to Texas - before the end of our trip, we did a couple of errands (including picking up some presents for the Twins) - back at the house, we celebrated a belated birthday for Erin and Brenna (complete with Nicky's homemade cake) - relaxed for a while (watching NASCAR race - Coca Cola 600) - packed and got ready for bed (late)]

Alexandria, VA (USA)

Tim and I haven't had a chance in a while to get together, so he suggested we get together on the way home from work in Old Town. We'd previously found a place ("Duke's") in the Embassy Suites next to the Metro Station (good Happy Hour) but when we reached it today (1730), it was closed for construction. Undeterred, we moved next door to Joe Theisman's restaurant. We spent a few hours relaxing there during their Happy Hour - never had dinner, just appetizers. But, from just those, I'd definitely return (good service and great food presentation). Around 2045, we headed back to the Metro and retrieved my car from Huntington Station. By this point, the traffic back-and-forth on the Wilson Bridge is much more manageable. Took Tim back to National Harbor and then returned home via I-495 and Van Dorn Street. A nice break from the normal commute!

Washington, DC (USA)

Kim told me a few weeks ago that she would be playing in an organ recital in Downtown DC - so I had it on my calendar for today. It was another matter to get away from the office, but I eventually ducked out the back door for the lunch hour and caught the Metro from L'Enfant to McPherson Square (after a long wait for a train...). I'd been there recently (see MAR 2012), so I knew where the station escalators would let me out - near the north end of Lafayette Square. The recital was in historic St. John's Episopal (built in 1816). The little building was dwarfed by the buildings around it, but the view from one of the side windows was the green park and slight glimpses of the White House. From the history I read, I learned that every U. S. President since Madison has attended services at the little church - there was even a pew (#54) with a plate on the armrest that designated "The Presidents' Pew." The musical event was part of the "First Wednesdays" series offered by St. John's from Fall to Spring. The recital started at 1210, and Kim began with a Bach Fugue, which sounded familiar (probably banked in my brain since about 1989...). In between other pieces (all an "Homage to Bach"), she gave background information on the stories of the composers - the remaining music was influenced (but not composed) by J. S. Bach. At one point, she pointed out that musical notes had alphabetic correlation, which formed the basis (via the letters B. A. C. H.) for the final piece (by Liszt). She did a great job - and just watching her play the complex music (including multiple foot pedal sections) was really something. The performance lasted almost an hour, so I only had a few minutes to congratulate her before I headed back to the office. It was a real treat, though.

Falls Church, VA (USA)

My friend, Kim, had been trying to align our schedules for a few weeks to have dinner - today looked like a good fit. I finished work around 1630 today and headed back to my car. From the Huntington Station, I took Telegraph Road over I-495 and circled back around onto Duke Street (Alexandria). With tons of traffic by that point, I just turned right to avoid it and ended up on Cambridge Road (passed Bishop Ireton High School) and then turned on to Janneys Lane (west) until reaching North Quaker Lane and then continued north to a crazy "six-way" intersection. It was worth the trouble, though, since I was able to get on the King Street (AKA Leesburg Pike, VA-7). There were a lot of lights and traffic, but it was the most direct route to Kim's. Everything was going well until I arrived in the town of Falls Church - when I finally got sick of all the short-timed lights and pedestrians jaywalking. Got off on North West Street and drove north until I finally saw Westmoreland Street - then, I knew I was close. Arrived around 1745 and found Kim, David and Jeremy all ready to eat - they just had to throw the steak on the grill. We had a great dinner - Kim went all out with the side dishes - and then I watched Jeremy play internet games (something about a penguin...). Later, Kim and David and I chatted. Before we knew it, it was already 2130... Said goodbye and tried to go back via my normal route (Haycock, Leesburg Pike and I-66) - but it was closed. Drove up to I-495 and found a HUGE traffic jam - the regularly scheduled construction work was just starting (down to ONE lane!). After about 20 minutes, I made it through and got home with no additional problems. What a nice evening!

I had to drive to Rockville again today for a meeting. Left early (0645), as that has proved to be the best way to avoid the worst of the I-495 traffic. Even had a chance to have a nice breakfast at LJ's before we got started. Lots of technical discussion today about software development and communications requirements (with a break for my usual safety duties). Lunch with all the guys at LJ's and then a few more hours of meetings. Finished around 1530 and then drove back into Virginia on I-495. Just some minor delays before turning on to I-66. No problems to VA-28 and then got to the company HQ in Chantilly - but the entire evolution took almost 60 minutes. Settled in to the exam prep course almost exactly on time (1630). After two hours of training, I took care of some work emails. Left for home around 1900 (via VA-28, I-66 and Fairfax County Parkway) and made it to the apartment by 1930.

Chantilly, VA (USA)

Some of my co-workers and I have been taking a company certification course in systems engineering - virtual every week - for almost two months. Today was the last class, so Phil and I decided we wanted to go to company HQ to participate in the design exercise. We coordinated to meet up at Franconia-Springfield Metro Station. This was the first time I've tried to use that station during rush hour - and I do NOT like the traffic patterns... Despite some frustrating moments, I was able to meet up with Phil when he arrived (from his home in DC) at 0730. From there, we drove via Fairfax County Parkway, I-66 and VA-28 and made it to class around 0815. We spent about four hours with out instructor and a few other company engineers (working in teams) to apply all we had learned. Afterwards, we had a nice dinner and a couple of VPs were on hand for certificates. Phil had to go back into the city, so I drove him to the Vienna-Fairfax Station (quite easy to enter/exit) and then went back to the HQ. They have some flexible work spaces and I met up with some friends who have been advising me since I got to my company. I spent the rest of the day learning tasks for my manager position and running a teleconference (remotely). Wrapped things up around 1730 and headed home via the usual route.

Mason Neck, VA (USA)

Today was one of the best days I've had since I first arrived in Virginia last December. I'd seen advertisements around Mason Neck about an Eagle Festival that would be held today and decided to take advantage of the events on the schedule. I arrived almost precisely when it began (1000) - my first visit to the Mason Neck State Park. As I arrived at the Visitor Center, I was fortunate enough to come across a group that was just about to depart on a canoe trip. I was able to join them and we took a nice trip down Belmont Bay to Kanes Creek. We were not disappointed - there were several osprey nests (with at least two ospreys in each). The highlight, though, was that we also got to see several eagles. The trip was pleasant - too short, really. As we returned, it was clear that the festival would be well attended. I took advantage of the nice weather (rain had been predicted) and explored the many booths near the Visitors Center - local outdoor groups and historical organization - and also watched a couple of kids' shows (reptile and mammal interactive opportunities). Later, I managed to get a ride in a National Wildlife Refuge van to the Great Blue Heron rookery (open only once per year!) on the Potomac River. It was a great opportunity, although leaves grew on the trees early this year and obscured the nests. Still, I saw another eagle and plenty of herons. Headed back to the State Park (listened to stories of the van driver - she ran safari tours in South Africa). Spoke to several people who had been coming to the festival for years - it sounds like a great thing to make a habit! By the time I got back, there were so many people there that I thought about leaving. There was even a loud band (not bad) playing. So, I took the opportunity to take a hike - using Kanes Creek and Eagle Spur Trails, found a great blind on Kanes Creek (saw more ospreys). The temperatures were pleasant and I took my time (turned out to be almost five miles combined). After that, it was time to go. I drove out of the park and headed back towards my apartment (1600).

Washington, DC (USA)

Woke up very early for some reason this morning (0530)... Decided not to waste the forecasted warm day and left around 0730 - bound for an island in the middle of the Potomac River. Drove up Van Dorn and then got on I-495 to access US-1. Once in Alexandria, drove over to Washington Street - there wasn't any traffic, but the lights still made me wait... Got on George Washington Parkway and drove along the river for a while - stopped at Gravelly Point (boat ramp, near approach end of Reagan Airport runway). All along the way, I saw lots of joggers and bikers on the Mount Vernon Trail (looks like something the kids would enjoy...). Finally stopped the car at the parking area for the Theodore Roosevelt Island National Memorial. Walked across the pedestrian bridge and then found a pretty plaza area where there was a big statue of the President. Behind him, there were four obelisks with words of wisdom (from Teddy) on them: Nature, Manhood, Youth, The State. I was struck by how important the statements were - and applicable to today's world (perhaps the best was "If I must choose between righteousness and peace, I choose righteousness"). I enjoyed the pleasant weather (it was just right at 0800...). Ended up walking around the island - and I only saw a few joggers. Still, the park was much more urban than Mason Neck - and many aircraft on arrival to Reagan Airport flew over. The views were good, though, and I got to see some of the same things I saw with Carolyn last month (Kennedy Center, Georgetown, etc.) from a boardwalk through a river swamp. It was all very pretty. Left the park around 0945 and drove up towards the Key Bridge to turn around. Reversed my tracks to get back to US-1 and Kings Highway. Stopped for gas and grocery shopping before heading home.

Mason Neck, VA (USA)

Spent part of the day at the Library (something I've been doing for a few months now - for my classes and for work overflow...). Got bored around 1600, so I left and drove back over to Mason Neck. I've checked it out a few times, but still hadn't actually hiked any trails. By the time I got there (1630), the weather was "just right." I entered the Elizabeth Hartwell Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge and parked at the trailhead for the Woodmarsh Trail. I had a great time walking in the woods - at least three miles (and probably more) with pretty views of the Potomac River. I didn't see anyone! It was peaceful and quiet. What a great way to unwind from a week of non-stop work! Finished up around 1830 and was leaving the NWR when I noticed that the adjacent Mason Neck State Park will be having an Eagle Festival next week! I definitely would like to see that, so now I've got plans to enjoy another day of awesome Virginia Spring Weather - away from the Cherry Blossom crowds... On the way home, I stopped for dinner at Olympians Restauraunt (Greek - great gyros!). Watched NASCAR Sprint Cup (Texas!) Race for the rest of the evening.

[up early - drove to Rockville for our monthly meeting - worked in office before it started - nice breakfast at LJ's - worked through lunch time - got done around 1415 - headed toward Chantilly after that - hit huge traffic jam just after I transitioned from I-270 to I-495 - took forever to cross the Potomac [I heard later this was all due to a scheduled closure for construction!!] - ended up getting off on Georgetown Pike (VA-193) - school bus and lots of other folks using that way - took SO long to get to Leesburg Pike (VA-7) - some rain - had to get gas at that intersection - drove to VA-28 and then headed South - found a new way to our HQ (exit at Willard Road, turn onto Lee Road and then Converence Center Drive) - met with Mike at his office - then tried to visit Jackie (not in) - ended up getting sidetracked with some work and missed beginning of my engineering class - ended up getting about an hour and half worth of training (OK) - headed home via VA-28, I-66 and Fairfax County Parkway - evidence of Bob's return from Japan... - some TV before bed (tired)]

Leesburg, VA (USA)

[Last day for training... - arrived early enough to have breakfast at Anita's (New Mexico style burritos) - my friend, Lee, had recommended it - I had a breakfast burrito with green chili sauce (mmmm) - felt "very safe" while I ate, since the entire local police department seemed to be there... - class started on time (0830) and I even got to meet Arun, someone I've been working with (virtually) for several months - he had coordinated a tour for me, Jim and Sabrina (to begin after class) - several other folks also expressed interest, so I couldn't wait to be done with the class... - we finished around 1200, and then a few of us had lunch at Jimmy John's (again - OK - so it is good) before the tour began - began in the Test and Training Lab - great experience (included me getting to "control aircraft" - all virtual - best thing I've done in this new job) - we spent a while there (Arun demo'd some issues that we've been discussing - after that, we headed out on the Ops Floor and listened in and observed Sector activities (Arun showed us a lot of quick looks to explain things that were happening) - wow! - what a perspective, compared to my 35K experiences to this point! - we ended the day listening in to a traffic management TelCon (really put things into perspective) - after that (1600), left for home - as I got to Westfields again, hit a HUGE traffic jam - so, for the third day in a row, I stopped at HQ to get some more work done - I feel like I'm getting the hang of "flexible workspace" - didn't stay as long, though - made it home around 1830 tonight - what a great week away from Downtown!]

[Another day of training in Leesburg... - up around the same time as yesterday - made it to ARTCC early - had breakfast at McDonalds again - class from 0830 until 1130 - ate at Jimmy John's with Matt (discussed CAP and other safety work) - back to class after that - we finished around 1530 today - one controller (Dominick) took me on a tour of the operations floor (great to observe) - still was able to leave for Chantilly before 1600 - drive was a little easier this time - made it with a little time to spare before class began - finished at 1815 and then spent another hour taking care of work emails - home via VA-28, I-66 and Fairfax County Parkway - arrived very late - tired...]

Leesburg, VA (USA)

[I had to go to Leesburg for training today (something I've been trying to get for several months) - I was glad I had been there earlier in the month (with Carolyn) and I knew what to expect (commute wise) - started at 0645 and made good time to Leesburg Pike (VA-7) - lots of lights and traffic (but nothing like what was on the other side - yikes!) - made it to the ARTCC early enough (0745) that I was able to get my visitor badge and then head into Leesburg for breakfast (McDonalds) - made it to class on time (0830) and had several hours of interesting instruction (also met several controllers - a good thing after all these months on TelCons with them) - a few of my classmates suggested we have lunch at Wegman's (a high end shopping center nearby) - it turned out to be really something! (Nicky would love it) - discussed various work issues throughout the meal - back to class for the rest of the afternoon - finished around 1600 - used VA-7 to VA-28 and was doing well until I got to Westfields (traffic jam) - decided to stop at the HQ to get some work done - found out about the flexible work stations and internet connection (good stuff) - after the traffic had settled down, I headed home via Fairfax County Parkway again - home around 1930]

[up early - drove out to Rockville - had small breakfast and eventually saw Jim, Sabrina and Al - meetings began around 0900 - working lunch (but Schwann's truck was there, too!) - finished meetings at around 1415 - followed up with some work Jim needed completed - departed for Chantilly around 1500 - used I-270 and I-495 to get to I-66 (traffic wasn't too bad, except through Tyson's Corner construction...) - used VA-28 to get to our company headquarters - met up with Kim and got some career counseling before my class - first time I've been able to attend in person (usually conducted via teleconference) - interesting (with networking opportunities) - finished relatively early (1800) - used VA-28, I-66 and Fairfax County Parkway to get home (stumbled on our company's satellite office in Lorton on the way home - good to know...) - relaxed after a busy day...]

[got up early - Carolyn slept in - at work for several hours before Carolyn called - she dropped off her bag with me and went over to the Smithsonian again - I worked until 1400 and then met her again - took her on Metro to Union Station - after making sure her train was on time, we explored the marketplace - ended up having cake (key lime) and a drink at a bar there - around 15 minutes before she was supposed to leave we got nervous because no "New York" appeared on the board - but an Amtrak employee pointed out that her train continued on to Boston (which was posted) - abruptly, it was time for her to go (sad...) - went back to Metro station and made it just in time for my Red Line train (later paid for that good luck with a long delay for the Yellow Line, though...) - it was getting HOT by that time, so I was glad to get into my car (air conditioning) and make my way home - this was the least activity for a few days, so I ended up going to bed early]

[Up at my usual time - Carolyn not happy about early... - stopped at Dunkin Donuts for her and then got my drycleaning nearby - drove to Metro Station - ride into the city was easy - dropped her off near the Mall (we then learned that things don't open until 1000 - oops...) - I went to work for a few hours - met her for lunch at the Bistro in the Holiday Inn - back to work for the rest of the afternoon - met her again around 1730 - we toured the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum (open late for the tourists) - they have changed it a lot (nice Wright Brothers exhibit) - spent about an hour there and then walked over to China Town - had dinner there (after having a tough time picking a restaurant) - enjoyed ourselves until after dark - walked around with nice weather - headed back to Mall to take pictures of the monuments by dark - Carolyn wanted to see the White House, so we got on the Metro at Archives (after seeing the Navy Memorial) and rode over to McPherson Square - it had started to rain as we came out of the station - not many people there (where did the "Occupy DC" folks go?) - back on the Metro (Blue Line to Pentagon) - waited a LONG time for trains - eventually got back to our car - I was exhausted by that point, but drove us home (no traffic) - went to bed almost immediately]

Washington, DC (USA)

[early bird gets the worm - in city by 0845 - cherry blossoms at Tidal Basin - great walk around and nearby (including Mall) - weather misty - drove over to my office and parked there - had early lunch at Holiday Inn on 6th Street - took Metro to Foggy Bottom and explored GWU and Georgetown area - walked down to Potomac River (saw Watergate and Kennedy Center) - the place was sort of deserted (found out later that there was a major flood there last year) - found a nice little hole-in-the-wall bistro (Snap & Fettucine, with Fox on sign) to eat a mid-day snack - enjoyed the pleasant weather as we dined outside before departing to walk some more - circled back around (through Georgtown proper) to Foggy Bottom stop - took train back to L'Enfant and walked back to my car - drove out of the city around 1300L - took I-395 to George Washington Parkway, then to I-66, VA-267 (part of Dulles Toll Road - free) - I-495 and then got off on VA-193 - found our way (passing fancy houses) to Great Falls Park (this time from Virginia side - see APR 2006) - nice waterfalls - kayakers - enjoyed the weather (lots of people picknicing) - drove west on VA-193 until it joined VA-7 (more fancy homes) - continued to Leesburg - explored the town a little bit and then stopped for an early dinner (1500) at an interesting burger joint called Tenderjack's - spent some time there (chatting) before driving out of town again on VA-7 - noticed the FAA site as we were leaving (checked out that out for a future trip...) - connected with VA-28 and drove south until we reached I-66 - drove one exit to Fairfax County Parkway and took it to Pohick Road (after crossing I-95, stumbled across a back way to Lorton Station and a big Catholic Church) - got my bearings again and then took Carolyn to visit Mason Neck (including National Wildlife Refuge) - we enjoyed the nice weather and got some great views of the River - nice talking all day - headed back to the apartment around 1830 - Carolyn updating photos and watching movies ("Something Borrowed" - uuuugggh...) - bed late]

[errands - drove into DC (via I-495, Braddock Road, Little River Parkway and I-395) - picked up Carolyn (in my car) at Union Station (red light camera ?) - had some trouble with traffic, pedestrians and construction areas, but eventually drove out of the city - lunch at Macaroni Grill - relaxing at apartment - drove to Huntington Metro and took train to King Street - walked down entire length of street to waterfront (stops at Las Tapas, souvenir shops, etc.) - lots of green - warm, pleasant - long wait for train... - home after 2200 - Carolyn on computer and TV shows - bed late]

Great Falls, VA (USA)

It's been nearly 20 years since I last heard my friend, Kim, play the organ. I can't believe it has been that long, actually, since (for a short time in my life) I heard her every day. Fortunately, she is now the music director for a small Parish in Great Falls, Virginia and I figured it was high time to listen to her play again. I left the apartment around 1630 and drove up I-495 to the Leesburg Pike (VA-7) and headed west. It wasn't too hard to find, although I was surprised to find a one-lane bridge when I turned on to Springvale Road. Mass started at 1730 and I sat with David and Jeremy. I forgot how music is very subdued during Lent, so it wasn't exactly as I had hoped. Still, it brought back a lot of old memories from my time in college and I am glad I got to hear her play - I'll have to visit again. They had a prior engagement, so we parted ways and I backtracked to Kingstowne. I'd been reading about an Indian Restaurant near my house and decided to try it out. The Town Center is always VERY busy over the weekend and this time was no exception. I ended up parking in the garage and walking over to Aditi from there. Had to wait about 20 minutes (it was crowded), but the food selection and prices were worth it. I actually couldn't remember ever eating at an Indian restaurant - though I've had curry before. After I got seated (1915L), I asked the waitress what she recommended - decided on the Korma (almond and yogurt based curry) and garlic pita bread. The dinner was good! There were several funny moments in the place, though, due to the close-quarter seating (incorrect food deliveries without anyone realizing it, some juicy conversations in ear shot, a waiter flirting with a table of young ladies). Very full when I finished. It was actually easier to get out of the parking lot and I made it home quickly after that.

Mason Neck, VA (USA)

Since I first discovered Mason Neck (see JAN 2012), I've been wanting to go back. The rural nature of the area - coupled with many things I enjoy doing - make that area in the southern part of Fairfax County very appealing. However, as much as I would definitely have liked exploring the wildlife refuge, State Parks and the bike trail, I knew they wouldn't be as fun without the kids (sigh...). Fortunately, there was one thing I knew I could do without hurting their feelings: visit the home of Founding Father, George Mason. To get there, I used a scenic route I found on the map - it took me from Kingstowne into the Pohick area on Telegraph Road. I've used the road a lot, but never that far. After I crossed US-1, the pavement became Old Colchester Road, where I immediately noticed the heavily-attended (and historical) Pohick Episcopal Church. After that, I followed a narrow street that went through rolling hills and criss-crossed Pohick Creek multiple times - before hitting Gunston Road. I was glad the landmarks looked familiar after that point... I had noticed Gunston Hall last time and figured it would have enough architectural and historical appeal to keep me entertained for a few hours. It wasn't too warm, but after I got to the grounds (1015), I immediately wanted walk across the pretty fields and up the dirt, tree-lined carriage road that led up to the front of the home. However, when I went inside the visitors center, they told me I had just enough time to watch a movie about George Mason before a tour of the home began. The film was interesting - a great introduction to one of the (normally) forgotten men who shaped our Nation. I hadn't considered many of this man's contributions - I guess I took them for granted. From our family tour of Monticello (see MAR 2007), I knew that George Mason had inspired Thomas Jefferson while he wrote the Declaration of Independence (the statement "they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" is a paraphrase of Mason's work in the Virginia Declaration). What I had never known was the extent to which he had staked his reputation and friendships (and lasting fame) on arguments for a Bill of Rights when he attended the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Of course, he got his way - and we are protected from an oppressive central government because of his efforts. After the film ended, I hurried over to Gunston Hall, a pretty Georgian (brick) home overlooking the Potomac. It reminded me a bit of Stratford Hall (see JUN 2009). It turned out that I was the only person on the tour - very nice! My guide provided an excellent description of architectural features and carpentry (most designed by George and then improved and completed by an indentured servant from England, William Buckland) in the home, along with additional descriptions of the man and his family. After that (about an hour), I walked around the grounds - great views of the Potomac, gardends, orchards and out-buildings (found out later that Gunston Hall, like Mount Vernon, is almost directly across the river from Piscataway National Farm - see APR 2006). I paid my respects at the family cemetery, where George Mason and his wife were buried. Spent a little time after that in the small museum, learning more about the Mason family holdings and I drove away from the place (1300) with a great appreciation for this Founding Father - definitely worth a return visit.

Washington, DC (USA)

[after work, walked to Library of Congress (1330) - renewed my researcher card, since mine expired soon after my last visit (see JUL 2000) - had lunch there - explored tunnels that connect the buildings - went to genealogy and local history room for a while - when I left (1630), it was raining (no umbrella!) - headed south to nearest Metro station (Blue Line) and went back to L'Enfant - back to my car and home - hope to return soon!]

Washington, DC (USA)

Every day that I've been going to work in the City, I always wished things were the way they used to be: that when I was in Washington I was only a tourist! Now that I'm busy there almost every day, I often forget how many things there are to see and do. I promised myself this morning that I was going to drive in to see something new! The traffic was non-existent on I-395, and I was able to make it into town quickly. As I was looking for a place to park near the Tidal Basin, I saw a sign for the Holocaust Museum - something I've always wanted to visit but never had the time. After I parked, I walked back up the hill and found that there were no lines (1000) and that I could go right inside. Security was a little tight, but once inside I figured out it was self-guided and that there were several permanent and changing displays. I spent the first hour in the Nazi Propaganda presentation, learning about how Hitler and his allies convinced the public that certain members of the society were undesirable. After that, I toured a section that focused on the experiences of children during the Holocaust (the story was told from the point of view of "David" and showed all the scary things that kids had to endure - up to, and including, losing his mother and sister to the gas chamber. It was an excellent display - and I wouldn't be afraid to take my nine year old through it. I then took an elevator up to the top floor of the Museum, where I walked through a sobering history of the "Final Solution" (spiraling down several floors), including all the villains, heroes and martyrs who were involved. The lay-out of the place actually reminded me of the Sixth Floor Museum in Dallas (see FEB 2009), but this was much more serious. I never felt like the experience was too disturbing for children, but there were things you could spend too much time viewing (specifically, video) that might overwhelm someone. At the bottom of the exhibit, we could choose to enter (or not) a Hall of Remembrance. An eternal flame burned there, on top of soil collected from several concentration camps and US military cemeteries. Biblical phrases (prophetic?) were on the walls around the airy space (including one that appeared to have been removed - no one could/would tell me what it used to say)... I was thoroughly impressed with the whole place - I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about the terrible events of the 1930s and 1940s. Made my way back to the car (1400) and dropped off my jacket (it was nice out by then). I had actually planned to visit the new Martin Luther King Memorial today, so that was where I headed next - a walk of only a few hundred yards along the Tidal Basin. I'd been reading about the memorial since last summer and I wanted to see if it lived up to the hype. I can tell you that it doesn't. Don't get me wrong: a giant stone statue of a man who had such an impact on the events of history and a hero to many people is inspiring. But I have several problems with the entire concept of how they chose to honor MLK. First, the statue makes him look angry (crossed arms, scowl) and doesn't, I think, represent the image that most people would have of the man. Second, the statue was carved from a "mountain of despair" and was then pushed forward - away from the mountain. My first thought (from a distance) was that it lined up with the Jefferson Memorial (appropriate, since that man wrote a document about "all men are created equal"). But if you look closely at the angles involved, it appears that someone actually decided to turn MLK away from Jefferson - he seems to be facing something else entirely (although I can't tell what). The worst part of this, I believe, is that he is the only prominent statue in the city that faces away from the rest of the monuments (Lincoln and Jefferson look towards the Washington Monument). I wonder who actually thought this memorial would bring people together or honor the ideals that the man believed in (after seeing this, I can now understand the angst of Dwight Eisenhower's family, who were recently told that their great hero's only accomplishment that was deemed worthy of representation - by an artist - was that he was once a farm boy)? The last nail in the coffin for me was that there was no visitor center and the book store actually appeared to be a memorial to President Obama, not Martin Luther King. What a bummer way to end the day! I'm glad the Museum was good - and I'm looking forward to getting back to the Tidal Basin for some cherry blossoms next month. Drove out of the city around 1500 and later met up with Bob at the grocery store.

Oxon Hill, MD (USA)

After a few weeks of saving up hours, I was able to take a day off today. Actually, it ended up being a "scouting day" - looking at schools in the area where our family could eventually live. Before that, I got an oil change on the Richmond Highway (US-1) and explored ways to get around Fort Belvior. It was pleasant in the morning - just a little cool. Later, I had an appointment at an Elementary School (K-6). Sounds and looks like a good place for Mollie... Had some fish sandwiches at McDonalds and explored neighborhoods in the Virginia Hills area (south of Telegraph Road), the Rose Hill area (between Franconia and Telegraph) and the Bush Hill area (north of Franconia). Found a couple of places with potential. After noon, I visited the first (of two) High Schools for the Twins. The first offered the International Baccalaureate curriculum - very academic oriented. But no one could ever say that the kids weren't ready for college! A little later, I drove over to the High School that is closest to Bob's apartment. It is huge, actually, since they run Junior and Senior High there. I actually got to take a tour of that school, since the kids had already been released for the day. The place had a planetarium! I also saw evidence of cosmetology, fashion, marketing, cooking and other non-academic classrooms in addition to the traditional course offerings (it was clear that the school was trying to help students who hadn't made up their mind about what to do after school). At both schools, I met people who had attended as students and couldn't speak highly enough about the superior quality of the institutions. Came out of the building around 1515 and found it was POURING... Ended up seeing Bob when I stopped off at the apartment to change and rest. Tim called and I later (1800) drove over to see him, Kathy, Bonnie and Katie at National Harbor. We ate dinner at McLoones (on the riverfront) and then stopped at the Peeps Store (for jellybeans !). Tim and I walked back up the hill to get a car, since it was now rainy and very windy. On the way, we saw a huge statue on the beach that he called "The Awakening" (huge sculpture of a man, half buried). Visited at Tim's for several hours before driving home (tired)... Bed around 2330.

Chantilly, VA (USA)

I was fortunate to be able to get away from the office again today (I needed it, too!). Got up at my regular time and drove up to Rockville (via Beltway and I-270). Arrived around 0745 and got some breakfast at the cafe. Jim got there a little later and we chatted (work stuff) until Sabrina arrived. Spent the rest of the hour discussing the upcoming meeting. That kicked off at 0900 and we made some good progress before lunch time. Sabrina has been telling us how much she wanted to eat at Chipotle (nearby), so Bill and I went with her. It was my first time there - and it reminded me of Moe's... Got a good burrito bowl (to go). Ate our lunch back at the conference room (it was good!). Second half of the meeting progressed well, too - and we finished nearly one time (about 30 minutes later than expected). Stayed for a little longer, discussing next week's meeting (same place). Left around 1530, enroute to Chantilly headquarters. Had no problem getting back to the Potomac River, but once I was in Virginia traffic ground to a halt. Time ticked away - and I got nervous I'd miss my next meeting. Made a decision to get on the Airport Toll Road. Made a last-second decision to use the free access road that runs between the East/West bound lanes of VA-267. I haven't ever driven to Dulles Airport (except when we visited the Smithsonian Air & Space Annex in APR 2006), so this was a good thing to try. There was no traffic on the road I took - there was a little more on the toll section. When I reached the terminals, I started to see people on the side of the road with clipboards. It seemed odd, but I didn't think anything about it until after I stopped by the Exxon Gas Station and explored the Cell Phone Waiting Lot. It was actually difficult to get back to the outbound lanes that would take me to I-495, but I eventually was able to get there (probably a 10 minute delay). Just as I left the Airport Property, I saw more people with clipboards and police cars waiting to nail people for doing what I just did! I guess this should be a one-time thing for me... Used VA-28 to get to our company headquarters and arrived at the campus about five minutes early for the meeting (whew!). I hadn't been to the conference center since the day I got hired, so it took me a bit to find it again... Sat down just as they kicked off the INCOSE Systems Engineer Certification Brief (1630). Best thing I've attended since I got out of the Service - the presenters provided information about how I convert put my on-the-job training into an internationally recognized certification. Good stuff! Finished around 1745 and then got some fuel for the car. Used Fairfax County Parkway to get home - seemed like it took a really long time in the dark... Still full from lunch, so ate a very light dinner. Today was a great break from the regular routine I'm seeing most days.

Alexandria, VA (USA)

I don't often stop for drinks on the way home from work, but today ended up differently. Tim had told me a few days ago that he wanted to get together. We were planning to ride the Metro back to my car and then drive over to National Harbor. In the end, work overtook this plan - both of us had late meetings. He suggested we find a place near Old Town to have a drink, so I suggested Duke's at the Embassy Suites on King Street. I've seen it almost every day since I've lived here - and always wondered if it would be good. When I arrived at the hotel (directly across the street from the Metro Station), I realized they were having their regular happy hour (for guests). That added a twist - and it meant that Duke's had a happy hour with $2 drafts. From the prices I've been paying around here, that is a GREAT price! Got through one beer before Tim arrived. He told me he had to get going to take care of some errands, but I convinced him to stay for a least one drink. Since he needed to get to a copy center, I suggested we walk over to the FedEx office in Old Town (on Washington Street). We did that - it wasn't too cold or too far... Mission completed, we walked back to King Street and had dinner at Las Tapas, a place I visited last year (see APR 2011). Good meal and flamenco dancing entertainment. We headed back to the Metro station after that (2145) and headed to my car. I drove him to his home across the River and then drove back to mine (traffic much lighter at that time of night). A nice diversion after a busy week of work.

Falls Church, VA (USA)

I realized this morning that it has been a few years since I watched the Super Bowl at an actual party. My friend, Kim, told me she was hosting a get-together for this year's edition. Since I moved to Northern Virginia, I've been over to her place a couple of times - and I was able to find the place without a map this time. On the weekend, with no traffic, it only takes about 20 minutes. Too bad it isn't that easy every day... Brought some of my favorite beer - Blue Moon. Kim had set up a nice spread, complete with large pizzas (from a local place - not a chain). The game wasn't very exciting - back and forth but not a lot of exciting plays (except for the first-ever 2-0 score, due to a intentional grounding safety). Halftime show included Madonna (the kids there said "who is that old lady?"). Some funny ads (bulldog racing greyhounds, baby & grandma stealing Doritos, Matthew Broderick replays Ferris Bueller's Day Off). Last 10 minutes of the game was pretty tense. A good party - but sort of a disappointing ending to the game. Said goodbye around 2200 and drove home (quick again).

Egg Harbor, NJ (USA)

First thing this morning, I went down to the lobby of the Somers Point Residence Inn for breakfast with my client, Jim (0700).  While eating, we prepped for another full day of work. Meeting was held on the Tech Center this time (Sharon coordinating again). Spent several hours wrapping up the last parts of a big project (very pleased with our progress over the last 48 hours!). Afterwards, I met up with one of Sharon's co-workers (Rick) and we went on a tour of the testing labs. Lightbulbs came on in my head after that (I'm really glad I saw some of that stuff (finally). We picked up lunch at the cafeteria and I talked with him about the future software releases while we ate. Later got dragged into a new "emergency" back in DC (yikes!) and started to realize it was time to go back. Still, I needed to be part of the afternoon teleconference (for part of it, anyway) - listened in with Sharon for the important stuff and then gracefully departed (1500). Had no problems with weather or traffic this time (US-40) but got stuck in a lane I didn't want to be in when I drove through Woodstown. As a result, I found myself on NJ-45 and passed through the town of Salem (a name I recognized from some of the genealogy I've done over the years). It looked like an interesting place to return to... Got back on the right track (NJ-49 and County Road 551) and crossed the Delaware Memorial Bridge on I-295 again (1630). Traffic was already getting really bad at the I-95 merge, so I decided to take a more leisurely route: the Eastern Shore. I've tried this way several times for Norfolk - but never to get to Annapolis. US-13 was a little frustrating, but DE-1 was fine. Got off at Middletown (paid toll at 1650) and used DE-299 to get to US-301. Made good time to that point, but when I crossed into Maryland, I found out a few things that (once again) make me sure I don't want to live there: no cell phone use (unless hands free) and very rural roads still have 55 MPH speed limit. Add the excessive tolls I saw on the way up yesterday ($20) and continued talk by their governor about raising taxes and I know I'm not going to live there (ever!). But I digress... US-301 merged smoothly into US-50 and I never even had to slow down. Did need fuel by that point and wanted to get a crab dinner. However, it was dark enough now (and late) that I gave up the food idea and just tried to find gas. Ended up having to cross the Chesapeake Bay before I found some (VERY windy and a little disconcerting guard rails...). After a couple of fake-outs (signs for gas stations that never produced one - what's that about?) - found a place to refuel in Annapolis. Traffic still flowing well, so I got back on the road and continued all the way home (US-50 to I-495 and back across the Potomac). I was relieved to be home, actually, since this whole trip ended up being work. One good thing: I can see some potential for places to stop and/or enjoy when I go back. Stayed up late on a work project - when I finally went to bed, I fell right to sleep!

Ocean City, NJ (USA)

My customer needed to travel to the Tech Center in Atlantic City today, so I got authorization to accompany him. We've been doing teleconferences for several weeks with the folks up there - my FAA client, Jim S., thought I should meet them and get a better idea of operations there. When I say "Atlantic City," I'm sure you immediately think about the Boardwalk and casinos. But I really mean the airport and Tech Center facility (a part of town called Egg Harbor). I had to wake up at 0430 to drive there - made it out of Alexandria by 0515 - very little traffic (a little rain, though) all the way through Baltimore (used I-95). I stopped to pay tolls at the Fort McHenry Tunnel (0610), JFK Memorial Highway (0640) and Delaware Turnpike (0700) - I was able to make it to I-295 and cross the Delaware Memorial Bridge about two hours after I left the house (not bad). Jim was waiting just over the Bridge - at a Cracker Barrel - and had just arrived about 10 minutes before me (from his home in north-central Maryland). We had a "working breakfast" before driving the rest of the way to the Tech Center (via Wiley Road and US-40). We had our first meeting at the NJ National Guard Base on the west side of the Atlantic City airport (0845). Sharon was coordinating the teleconference, and it went all day long (with a break for lunch from Wawa) and, when 1700 rolled around, it was time to go to our hotel. When Jim (who was leading the way) started to pull onto the Atlantic City Expressway, I realized I didn't have change. The toll booth (unmanned) required exact change - but we worked that out (fortunately, Jim had some). We then turned onto the Garden State Parkway (southbound) and drove to our hotel in Somers Point. Had a similar problem with a toll booth there (1730), but it was manned (found out later it is only manned during the day time - otherwise, exact change!). It was a pretty little town - right on the marsh along Great Egg Harbor Bay. After I'd checked into my room at the Residence Inn, I found out I had several urgent emails and phone messages. Spent the next hour trying to solve problems back at the office (funny - they couldn't get this done when I'm in town for 45 straight days...). Met up with Jim (late) and we drove back towards the city to have dinner with Sharon at Carabbas. Spent a few hours there and then went back to the hotel. Jim drove me over the bay to Ocean City (New Jersey) - it was a nice place (no alcohol, I'm told) with a boardwalk and beaches. The images from there were probably similar to Atlantic City in the early 1900s (could be a nice family vacation spot). Back in my room at 2200. More work for the office back in DC (grrrr....). Bed very late.

Rockville, MD (USA)

Had another meeting in Rockville today. I am glad that my job sometime requires me to work outside the Beltway... Got an earlier start this morning (0715) and was able to squeak through traffic with little problem. Arrived at the Site around 0800. Breakfast with Jim and Sabrina. Spent morning in one brief, lunch time in a different one - and wrapped up the afternoon with a teleconference from Jim's office. Very pleased with how everything worked out - some "firsts" today. Around 1700, drove over to see Pat, Mike and Aileen. It was dark this time, and I got turned around a few times on the way - eventually found them. We had a nice dinner there and talked a lot about the family, my trip to Salt Lake City [see SEP 2011] and genealogy plans. Aileen and I ended up making some inroads on the family tree (surprise!). Before I knew it, it was 2200! Didn't want to leave, but drove home at that point. It is nice to have some family nearby - and to have some similar interests that take my mind off work...
