Cape Cod Trip - Day 1
I'd been unable to travel during the Christmas holiday because of some maintenance my Subaru needed. Once this work was completed, my dad suggested I take advantage of the additional time off for New Year's Eve and Day. I agreed with this suggestion and left home today just after 0800. Initially, I drove south on I-89 (listening to audiobooks) until I reached Hooksett. As usual, I got on NH-3A but, instead of continuing all the way to I-93, took the cutoff (Main Street) and got on US-3. This allowed me to stop at Shaw's for some free (reward) items (0910). Next, I drove a short distance to Irving and got a gas fillup (0920). After that, I continued south to I-93 and drove towards Massachusetts. Surprisingly, there was very little traffic and I ended up having a great ride through Boston. I was even more shocked that I got through the MA-3/I-93 junction with no slow downs at all! The weather was great and I listened to more audiobooks on the way - it passed the time. I arrived on Cape Cod just after 1100 and met my dad at his house. We relaxed for only a short time, which was good because I was getting hungry... At 1130, my dad drove me (and Ana, his black Lab) east on the Cape (MA-6A, back roads, US-6). We used Station Avenue to get to get back on MA-6A and then drove over to take a look at our old home in Dennis. From there, we continued into Brewster and went to the old Brewster Cemetery. My dad showed me how he had moved my mom's stone (so it wasn't covered by a bush) - that made me happy (and saved me work because I'd been planning to do it myself). Driving a short distance east, we took a walk on the brand new trail complex (Eddy Bay Trail). It was well maintained and marked and had some great views of Cape Cod Bay. My dad told me he'd been there when he was a kid but it had been private land until only just recently. From there, we headed east on MA-6A again. I thought we'd use it all the way to Orleans but my dad got back on US-6 just before we reached that town. Instead, we drove to the Eastham Superette so we could get lunch. My dad told me he'd been coming there for decades and always got the same thing (roast beef sandwich). Before eating the food, we continued north towards the Cape Cod National Seashore Salt Pond Visitor Center. After reaching it, we made stops at Coast Guard Beach (to eat lunch) and Nauset Light Beach (to walk down to the shore). It was overcast and windy but not terribly cold - unfortunately we didn't see any wildlife... Backtracking to Eastham, my dad then took me on a tour of Chatham. Along the way, we barely missed getting trapped with traffic obstacles for the town's "First Night" event. Escaping from that crowd, we drove through Harwich and Dennis. In the latter town, we stopped to visit the site of my dad's old restaurant). Continuing into Yarmouth, we checked out the new DY Middle School and then got back on US-6. When we reached Sandwich, my dad showed me a brand new bike trail (which parallels the highway) inside the town. Back at my dad's by 1530, I took a walk in town to get the rest of my 10,000 steps. I had nearly finished when Eileen called - we talked for a while before I headed back to my dad's (I sat on his patio to finish our talk as it was getting dark. Next (1700), I went inside and watched some TV news with Dad and Beth. They had been cooking for a while and, when they finished the preparations, we sat down together for our meal. My dad had made a delicious chicken breast "casserole" with stuffing. We also had squash and mashed potatoes. For dessert, we each had a piece of cake. For the rest of the evening, we watched more news, some videos and did some talking. At about 2045, I said goodnight and spent the rest of the evening reading in the guest room. I went to sleep at 2200. It was great to be able to visit my Dad and see some places on the Cape that were familiar from my youth. More visiting and sight seeing tomorrow!

Littleton, NH (USA)
Hoping to finish the Ammonoosuc Rail Trail (and, in the process, continue my pursuit of completing the Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail), I made plans to hike today before I went to bed last night. When I awoke, it was rainy and cool - but I wanted to go on a walk. At 1000, I left my condo and drove (via I-91, VT/NH-25, River Road, NH-10, US-302) to Littleton this morning. I located a trailhead that allowed me to connect to the point with where I’d turned around (with a flat tire) during an October bike ride. There was a light powder coating on the ground. At that point (1130), I thought I was only a hundred yards from the end of the bike trail. However, I soon discovered (during a 1.5 mile walk) that the trail continued to the northeast. At the old train depot (now a restaurant), I left the gravel surface and walked across the first of five different bridges (two paved, one covered, one suspension and one non-descript) that I subsequently used to explore the old town and cross/re-cross the frigid Ammonoosuc River. Even though I’ve driven through the “Glad Town” many, many times this walking experience was unique and refreshing. The overcast sky alternated between spitting rain and sleet but I never felt cold or wet. Best part of all, I logged almost three miles, despite my continued struggles with bursitis. After getting done with my walk (1230), I drove (US-302 and NH-10) home immediately, arriving at my condo by 1400. Great way to spend my Christmas Eve!

Enfield, NH (USA)
[at 0745, I left my condo and drove to White River Junction to swim at the UVAC - even though I only had 30 minutes reserved for a swim lane, I was able to get an extra 15 minutes (total of 45, 50 lengths) before finishing (0900) - I then drove to West Lebanon and did some shopping at the NH State Liquor Store - next, I drove to Enfield and arrived at Dragon's Gate Tattoo Studio about 30 minutes before my scheduled appointment - the proprietor (Scott) was glad to see me early and we got my two AT tattoos (one on each leg) done before noon - after finishing up, I took a walk on the Northern Rail Trail from the center of town back towards Mascoma Lake - headed home after that (arrived by 1300)]

Ottawa Trip - Day 2
I realized last night that this was my first time in Ottawa since (August) 1991. Seems hard to believe my travels haven't brought me back since then... Eileen and I slept quite late for each of us (0700) and took our time getting ready. Steve and Heidi had suggested we meet for breakfast so there was enough time for me to take Mika for a walk, get Eileen some coffee and for us to talk some more. At 0900, we all got together and ate a nice meal at the buffet. We actually stayed in the dining area until after they closed (1000) and may have continued for several more hours. However, Steve got a call about the luggage arriving at the airport. This was a great piece of news and we drove over (short trip) to pick it up. After returning to the hotel and sorting through the stuff that belonged to Steve/Heidi or Eileen, we ended up talking for another hour. It was past noon before Eileen, Mika and I finally departed the hotel - what a nice visit! All of us buoyed by the great conversation as we departed. Eileen reminded me that we'd planned to take a walk before the expected rain arrived. So, I again looked at my long list of planned events and realized we couldn't do any of them because there was not enough time before we had to be in Potsdam again. Like yesterday, though, I found a "consolation prize": a complex of urban trails near Sawmill Creek. To get there, we drove a short distance east down Hunt Club Road (ON-32) until we got on the Airport Parkway (ON-79). Driving north, we eventually found a place where we could park (Kaladar Park) and access the trails - we started our "hike" at 1230. The pathway followed the Sawmill Creek and was mostly next to a road, train track and bus road. Despite the urban nature of the trail, however, there were some pretty things to see and Mika had a ball with the water, ubiquitous black squirrels and throwing sticks. Eileen showed me some edible (Staghorn?) sumac. I tried it and it was good (it has Vitamin C, I guess). There was some ice but the paved trail was mostly easy walking. We turned around when we were "abeam" of a Home Depot (on the other side of the creek). As we walked back towards the car, Mika and I played "tug of war" (fun). By the time we were done (1330), Eileen and I were ready for some food. She suggested that we get lunch at a place nearby that had been recommended by Steve and Heidi. I agreed with this recommendation and, after a short drive, we arrived at the Shawarma Palace (1345). While Eileen was parking the car and getting Mika situated, I managed to get some assistance from other patrons on ordering a plate of food. Once it arrived, we laughed to see that the Mixed Plate was HUGE and we couldn't even finish it while working together. The food was delicious, though! We got done eating at around 1445 and got back on the road. To get back to Potsdam, we essentially backtracked (via Hunt Club Road, ON-19, ON-32, ON-73 and ON-416) to the Saint Lawrence River. Eileen and I had another great talk along the way - our conversation was light and fun after such a great weekend in Ottawa. We both noted that there still had been no rain (we were lucky, I guess). The border crossing wasn't stressful - line looked long but it was over 30 utility trucks that were waved through to a screening area. The weather and views as we crossed the bridge were awesome. Eileen's dad called as we made our way (via NY-812, NY-68 and US-11) back to Potsdam. By the time we arrived at Eileen's house (1630), I was already tired. To make matters worse, by then it had started to rain... Eileen had some things to do and I still had over four hours of driving to do. Reluctantly, I said goodbye (1640) and headed towards home. I used NY-72, NY-11B, US-11, NY-190 and, finally, US-11 again to reach Rouses Point. It was mostly dry and dark for most of this phase of the drive. I actually got to talk to all three of my daughters for about 30 minutes each (what a treat!). I encountered a line of about 20 Fire Trucks (decorated with colorful Christmas lights) that were waiting on a side road - guess I got lucky with missing a traffic jam... When I reached Lake Champlain and got on US-2, it started raining. From there until I got home, there was constant precipitation. It wasn't cold, though, so I didn't worry about ice. I listened to music and tried to stay alert. For some reason, it seemed much later than it actually was. In Albergh, VT I got on VT-78 and used it to reach I-89. From there, I was able to keep up a good speed all the way home. My dad called me and we made plans for later in the month. I wanted to stop a few times for a bathroom break but I kept passing rest areas with hours that showed they were already closed. I was also monitoring my gas gauge closely but I was able to make it all the way to Hanover without getting fuel. Arrived at 2040 and unloaded in the driving rain. Spent some time texting with Eileen before collapsing on to my couch - I went to bed about an hour after I arrived home. This great trip reminded me that I don't have to drive too far away to find a fun weekend - it just requires friends, outdoor activities, food and creativity!

Ottawa Trip - Day 1
Eileen and I recently talked about going to Ottawa for the weekend together - she had some errands to run there. Once we made plans, I was raring to go! However, she had stuff to do in the morning so there was no rush for me to reach Potsdam. I left my condo at around 0800 and made a stop at the Shaw's in West Lebanon so I could return some recalled food. After that, I got on I-89 and headed into Vermont. I listened to audiobooks on the way and tried to call all three of my daughters but they must have been sleeping... In Williston, I stopped to visit a second Shaw's because I'd received an email about "free items" (an energy drink and box of hot chocolate packets). As I was leaving, I noticed a place where I could "auto-recycle for credit" (will have to try that in the future). Got back in my car and headed north on I-89. Just after I got on the Interstate, I had a scare when I realized I'd forgotten to grab my passport. Before panicking too much, however, I realized that I usually carry my passport card and found it in my wallet (whew!). I got off the Interstate a the US-2 crossing and proceeded west towards the Champlain Ferry landing. Since I still had some time, I passed that and continued towards the town of Hero spent some time exploring the islands in the northern end of Lake Champlain (South Hero Island, Grand Isle and North Hero Island). I’ve been through the area (northwest corner of Vermont) before but usually haven’t had time to stop. In fact, I don't think I've been exploring nearby since 1996. With the cool, clear weather today, I enjoyed walks along the pretty lake shore at Knights Point (1020 to 1100) and Alburgh Dunes State Park (1115 to 1145). Both had nice beaches and well marked trails. There was practically no one else in either park and I appreciated the solitude. I imagine it’s a whole different story during the Summer... Finished with my walks, I drove north along the west side of the Alburg(h) peninsula on VT-129 and West Shore Road. I skipped a trip onto Isle La Motte because there was no way across to New York from there. Instead, got back on US-2 and crossed Lake Champlain to Rouses Point/ I'd thought about another walk or to stop for a sit-down lunch. However, it didn't appear that I had enough time left for that. So, I intercepted US-11 and continued west. At 1210, I stopped to pick up some food at McDonalds in Champlain, NY (near the I-87 crossing). Driving west again, I ate my lunch in the car and then switched to NY-190 in Ellenburg. I've gotten used to taking this route because it helps to cut off some of US-11 route. After driving through Malone, I switched to NY-11B and followed it all the way to Potsdam. I stopped at the Valero on the east side of town to re-pack and check on travel plans. At 1415, I drove to Eileen's and we packed up her car. With Mika onboard too, we got on the road by 1445. Starting from Potsdam, we drove to Canton on US-11 and then switched to NY-68. We used that road and NY-812 to reach the bridge at Ogdensburg that crossed into Canada. The line at the border was kind of long and slow but we made it into the country OK. It was already about 1530 by the time we officially entered Ontario so I realized I needed to look for a new place where we could go for a walk before the sun set (I'd had more elaborate plans before I realized how early it got dark so this was an audible). As we drove north on ON-416, I located a wildlife preserve just west of the town of Spencerville and we headed in that direction. Along the way, we saw an amazing "human face" outlined in clouds. We had to use ON-21 to reach the Mill Run Conservation Area (town of Augusta) but found the trailhead without much difficulty. We then took a walk on some short trails along the South Nation River. It wasn't very cold but the sun was already dipping below the horizon. Mika loved our walk (we stayed there from about 1600 to 1630) and was sad to get back in the car. We next backtracked to ON-416 and continued north towards the hotel. Along the way, we had a good talk (lack of life distractions made that easier). We used ON-73 to reach the Rideau River, crossed on ON-32 and then drove up the east side of the river (on ON-19). Our destination was in the vicinity of Ottawa Airport (on the southern outskirts of the city). I'd made a reservation at the Homewood Suites on Hunt Club road (where Eileen's friends were going to be staying) and we checked into our room at about 1730. After getting things settled, we took Mika for another walk and then went to dinner at the nearby Lone Star Texas Grill. We shared an appetizer and a huge plate of fajitas (delicious), along with some awesome adult beverages (my giant margarita, "fuzzy peach" was delicious and Eileen had a whisky sour). The atmosphere was great and we were able to relax and enjoy each other's company. After finishing dinner at 1730, we went back to the hotel and spent about an hour relaxing and doing crossword puzzles. When Eileen's friends finally arrived (2045), Eileen and I went down to the lobby to meet them. From that point, we spent nearly three hours talking! Steve and Heidi split their time between southern Ontario and Nunavut and had kept some of Eileen's gear since she'd been in Pond Inlet in early July. Since they were visiting family during the Christmas holidays, they were planning to return the gear. However, the airline (Canadian North) had lost their luggage. Undeterred, we had a fun time talking and visiting - before we realized it, it was already midnight (!). Saying goodbye, we retired to our rooms and went to bed. What a day!

Woodstock, VT (USA)
I stayed close to home this weekend and spent most of the daylight hours volunteering. Yesterday, I helped sell Christmas Trees with my fellow Knights of Council 2656 (Lebanon, NH) and on Sunday I helped visitors to the Billings Farm (Woodstock, VT) make beeswax candles during the Wassail Weekend Celebration (1015 to 1400). Each of these events was upbeat and rewarding - they also allowed me to interact with members of my local community. Beyond the volunteer sessions, I spent quality time with friends from our Parish’s Men of Saint Joseph, tasted several excellent local beers at Ramunto’s Brick & Brews, attended Mass at Sacred Heart, went to a wonderful dinner (with more friends from church) at Peking Tokyo and squeezed in a good swim (0830 today; swam for 30 minutes, 34 lengths) at the UVAC, Needless to say, when I got home this afternoon (1430) I felt VERY tired… Even with all the fun stuff I’ve mentioned, I only scratched the surface on socializing in my awesome little part of the Upper Valley - feel very lucky to be surrounded by such great people, places and things to do!

White River Junction, VT (USA)
This morning (as usual), I started teleworking very early. Since it was the Holiday Season, I'd decided to sign up for several volunteer opportunities during the coming weeks. For this reason, I departed my condo at 1330 and drove to Lebanon. This allowed me to spend some time (one hour) helping a team from the LISTEN Center to assemble holiday baskets. Our work space, the basement of the Lebanon Congregational Church, was absolutely filled with bags and bags of gifts. These items had been delivered by generous souls from all across the Upper Valley. Actually, my only job was to validate that the bags contained the requested items - in almost every case, there was much more in the bags than the individual and family “wish lists”. It looked like some parents had focused on warm winter clothes but the donators had added games and gift cards. There was some great stuff and I can imagine some REALLY happy kids waking up on Christmas morning this year. After getting done (1500), I drove to White River Junction so I could work out at UVAC. I swam for 45 minutes (52 lengths), took in 15 minutes of sauna, biked for 28 minutes (6.9 miles), rowed for 5 minutes and lifted weights. Once I was finished, I went home (arrived at 1730) and resumed teleworking. Glad I could help out my community and get some exercise on a cool winter afternoon!

Boston Weekend - Day 3
After such a wonderful evening last night, it was hard to get motivated to leave my bed this morning. I still woke up at 0600 and did some reading before packing up. At 0800, I checked out of The Dagney and then walked (in some light rain) back to Two Financial Place so I could get my car out of the garage. The checkout process ended up being really easy and I was on my way out of Boston by 0830. It was quite rainy and wet as I drove north on I-93. Since I had some coupons I wanted to use at the Mall of New Hampshire in Manchester, I stopped there on the way (0915). The Mall wasn't open yet so I ended up driving a short distance to visit the BJs (for gas fillup at 0930) and Walmart (for supplies at 1010). Returning to the Mall, I walked around inside, waiting for everything to open (1100). Along the way, I got a lot of steps in and made up for my busted plans for a hike on the way home. Once the Eastern Mountain Sports opened, I got some socks there and was finished shopping by 1115. Driving across NH-28 (1130), I was able to enjoy a Veterans Day meal (I had the free voucher they gave me on November 11) at Texas Roadhouse. Done eating at 1210, I drove north on I-293, I-93 and US-3 to reach Shaws in Hooksett, where I picked up a free reward item (1235). Next, I continued on US-3 (and some back roads) and NH-3A until I reached I-89. During all of this time, the weather had simply been wet - unfortunately, the temperature dropped significantly as I continued north and was completely snow (accumulating) by the time I reached Warner. I actually encountered one person who had just careened off a steep cliff on the median - they somehow managed to get their car out of the mess (whew!). For the rest of the journey, the driving was obviously much slower - I had to carefully make my way up a frosty, slippery, snowy I-89 to reach home (arrived at 1345). The wintry conditions in northern New England were VERY different from the pleasant ones in the Bay State… Overall, though, this was an amazing weekend of fun, exercise, history, culture and camaraderie!

Boston Weekend - Day 2
There was a lot of street noise overnight so didn't sleep well. I stayed in bed until about 0600 and then read and relaxed in my room until about 0845. Next, I went down to breakfast at the Fin Point and tried their chocolate pancakes (very good). I was done eating by 0915 and then left The Dagney for a stroll around Boston. First, I crossed Atlantic Avenue and located the Boston Harbor Walk (just north of the Harbor Towers). From there, I started a counterclockwise circuit of Boston Harbor. I was able to stay close to the water and get views of Hull, East Boston and Charlestown. Also watched departing Logan air traffic as it climbed into the overcast. The temps were in the 40s and it was a little cloudy. Still, I wasn't cold without my coat and never felt any raindrops. I made my way through the Battery Wharf area of the North End and got views of the USS Constitution. From there, I walked over towards TD Garden and arrived at the north end of the Big Dig zone (near the Zakim Bridge). I had not spent much time in this area since the massive city project and wanted to see how they had converted the old I-93 corridor (above ground) green space. Along the way, I walked a bit on the Freedom Trail. I next checked out the inside of the TD Garden, looked around in North Station, walked through part of The Hub on Causeway and then started walking south in The Rose Kennedy Greenway. There were a lot of street crossings so the going was slow. I found lots of pretty gardens, got good views of Boston Landmarks up and down the west side of the Atlantic Avenue. Passing by the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park Visitor Center (closed for the season), I noticed some brochures about upcoming events - the one for New Year's Day looked interesting... Eventually, I reached what looked like the end of the Greenway but then figured out there were parks all the way to Chinatown. Since I wasn't yet ready to return to the hotel, I walked over there and saw a large number of Republic of China flags and a huge memorial to Tiananmen Square. I next walked a bit further south to see the Big Dig "outflow" and then tracked east towards the water. Along the way, I stopped at South Station and found the Dartmouth Coach boarding and unloading gates. I then walked further (through a massive construction area) until I found the Amtrak section of South Station. Crossing the bridge that has a historical reenactor building for the Boston Tea Party, I made my way into South Boston. I picked up the Harbor Walk again but didn't follow it east. Instead, I crossed back to the west side of the Bass River and resumed my walk to the north. Coming full circle to the Harbor Towers, I realized I'd never checked my map all day for orientation or directions (thanks to the teacher from my High School Architectural Drafting class). Near the hotel again, I ordered a sandwich from Panera and picked it up a few minutes later (1210). I didn't eat immediately eat, though. Instead, I explored the area around The Dagney (coffee shops, pubs, etc.). Once I got back to my room, I rested my feet, ate lunch, did some more reading and got ready for an team building excursion that was planned for later in the afternoon. At 1345, I headed down to the lobby to meet up with my colleagues. Our boss (Chris D) had contracted one of the Old Town Trolleys to give us a two hour tour of Boston and Charlestown! The weather was great! As our guide, 25-year-old Ginger, took us to landmarks famous and obscure, we played a sort of Bingo / Road Rally game. For most of my co-workers, this was their first visit to Beantown and they didn’t know what they were looking for - it was almost too easy to win... We ended up seeing most of the things I'd seen in the morning but also drove over to get a closer view of "Old Ironsides" and the Bunker Hill Monument. We also drove deep into Back Bay and saw prominent landmarks on/near Beacon Hill, Fenway and Copley Plaza. Our driver was definitely very knowledgeable about Boston and also had impressive driving skills. Before getting back to our hotel, we drove through part of South Boston and, at the end, got our group photo taken at Harbor Place. After we were out of the bus (1605), I walked about a block from our hotel to get a photo of my own at the Coogan's Pub. Back in my room at The Dagney, I did some reading and prepped for our Company Holiday Party. Once I was ready, I went down to meet everyone at around 1725. Just then, Eileen called (as a result of the timing, we couldn't talk long). Rejoining the group, I then followed Chris D on a walk across the Bass River to South Boston (to reach our restaurant). The company party was held in a private room in the Davio's Northern Italian Steakhouse and (starting at 1800) we were were wined, dined and absolutely spoiled. What a meal! I had the rigatoni, Caesar salad and filet mignon - mmm. Wine flowed freely and the conversations were great. Dessert was a sampler of chocolate treats. At about 2200, things wrapped up and the walk back (via the Harborwalk again) was quite picturesque. Bed was at around 2300. Wonderful experience!

Boston Weekend - Day 1
My new company recently decided to host their annual Holiday Party in Boston and I was excited to be able to attend in person. I left my condo at 1415 and headed south on I-89. The weather was pretty good and the traffic was light. In Bow, I got off the Interstate and switched to NH-3A. I stopped once for a break but then got on I-93 and continued south. The traffic picked up a bunch and, by the time I reached Boston, it started to rain. I found my hotel (The Dagney) at about 1615 and, after quickly checking into my room, left my bags with the concierge. Valet parking onsite was quite expensive so I'd researched alternatives nearby (using ParkMobile). As a result, I was able to park in the basement of Two Financial Plaza for a reasonable daily rate (it was about five blocks away from the hotel). I walked back (using my umbrella) to the hotel and checked out my room. By this point, it was about 1645 and I wasn't planning to see other colleagues from my company until almost two hours later. I then explored the hotel, checking out the gym and some stairwell access - I got trapped in one place but was "rescued" soon afterwards. D'oh! I thought about eating in the hotel restaurant but it looked quite busy. Instead, I walked a short distance to a Panera I'd noticed and ordered some dinner there (1730). I ate in the restaurant (food was good) and read some more. Afterwards, I walked back to The Dagney. By then (1900), everyone else in the company had convened in the hotel bar (Fin Point Oyster Bar and Grill). My boss, Chris D, introduced me to the attendees (I had only met one of them before). For the next several hours, we talked shop, got to know each other better and enjoyed some of the drinks. Before long, I noticed that it was 2300 (!). After saying goodbye, I headed to bed but wasn't actually asleep until after midnight. Fun start to the weekend!

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 7
Last day of a wonderful trip... I was up by 0630 and spent some time reading in my room - After finalizing some plans with Eileen (for later in the day), I went to the hotel lobby to eat breakfast (0715). Once finished, I did some more reading, blogging, etc. Checking out of the hotel (1015), I headed north on I-81 until I reached I-481 (listened to audiobooks on the way). Next, I headed east and stopped at Tops Express Fuel (on NY-5 in Dewitt) for a gas fillup (1130). Got back on I-481 and continued north until I reached NY-298. At Bridgeport, I turned east on NY-31. On that road, I stopped a few times to get views of the southern edge of Oneida Lake. Google Maps suggested I next use NY-46 and, once I arrived at the intersection, I noticed the Eire Canalway Trail. Since the weather was good and I had time, I stopped for a walk (1210). The temps were was cold but it was clear and sunny. There were some good historic markers along the quiet stretch of trail (part of the Empire State Trail between Route 46 and Route 31) along the Canal and I logged almost two miles outside. At 1255, I got back back in my car and continued on NY-46 until I reached NY-49. Upon reaching Rome (my intended target), I found parking for the (closed) Fort Stanwyx and spent some time (1320 to 1330) walking around the earthworks. Fortunately, there were some good informational signs. Before I was done, I also checked out the old (beautiful) Catholic Church of St. Peter's. I was back in the car by 1345 and departed Rome on NY-49. Avoiding tolls on I-90, I continued to Utica. I next used NY-5S to continue through the pretty Mohawk Valley (listening to audiobooks and music). Eileen kept me updated (via text) as she drove south from her home. I had almost no traffic at all and enjoyed the easy ride at about 60 mph. Along the way, I passed several more signs for the Empire State Trail (bike route trailheads). I used NY-162 to reach US-20 at Sloansville and then stopped for a break at a Stewart's Shop in Esperance (1445). Continued into Albany from the west on US-20 - the traffic slowed down but I arrived at the Crossgates Mall soon after 1530. Eileen had asked me to buy her an Air Tag (to track her older dog) and I was finished with my shopping at Best Buy by 1545. After that, I drove (via I-87) to NY-7 and reached Troy at 1600. I drove up to the top of the hill in Prospect Park and, from there, I got a great view of the valley below. Eileen had suggested we meet for a walk but, when I tried to coordinate a meet up, it didn't work out (she had to help Scott with his stuff). Instead, I watched the sunset before meeting her for dinner at "A Bite of Xian in Troy" (1635). The restaurant was actually only for take-out but the owner let us sit inside to eat (I guess they used to have a full service restaurant but no longer). We got some delicious food and had a nice conversation. The visit was short because we both had long drives to make before our day was over. Finished at 1735, we said goodbye and I departed (via NY-7) Troy. On my way towards Vermont, I talked on the phone with Eileen and Erin. After reaching the border, I used VT-279 to reach the Vermont Welcome Center (at the intersection of US-7). As I continued north, I talked some more with Erin. I switched to VT-30 at Manchester and started over the mountains. Just at that crucial moment, it started to snow heavily! I had trouble seeing where I was going at times but just kept the speed low while I carefully navigated the climes, turns and descents. Eventually (whew!), I switched to VT-11 and used it to reach I-91. At this point in the drive, I got a call from my dad but kept losing cell signal. After getting close to the Connecticut River, the weather got a bit better. Mollie called and I talked to her for a little while. Just before I reached I-89, Eileen called again to update me on her progress. I crossed the River and made it to my condo by 2020. Spent some time unpacking and thinking about what an amazing week of traveling I've had. Glad I could see so many people along the way and celebrate Thanksgiving with my loved ones!

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 6
Last day with the girls (sad). I was awake by 0600 and packed up the car. Next, I got an early breakfast, did some reading and then did some walking near the hotel to pass the time. I let the girls sleep in until about 0800 and, after they’d gotten some breakfast, we departed the Best Western (0900). The girls had hoped to see Ellen and Robert one more time but got texts that said the rendezvous wouldn’t work. Instead, Brenna got the rest of her leftovers from The Albemarle and we left Asheville. We used I-26 to reach I-81 and had some interesting talks (mostly about the family, Bear’s health, Brenna’s December plans and other news discovered during Thanksgiving). After a mostly uneventful drive, we reached Blacksburg by 1215. We stopped at Mollie’s apartment and I got to see her place for the first time. After she’d unpacked a little bit, we drove down the street to eat lunch at the Cellar Restaurant (arrived at 1240). We had some good food and more conversation before I took Mollie back to her apartment. I left her some Wilson Creek and requested she figure out how to return one of my old Virginia license plates to the DMV (she said she would). Back on I-81 by 1345, I had a nice talk with Brenna. Meanwhile, we made good time for a while until we arrived at the I-64 merge. After that, the traffic got so bad that Brenna suggested we “take the scenic route”. I agreed and we drove on US-11 almost all the way to Harrisonburg. After reaching Brenna’s apartment (1600), I got to see inside (she almost didn’t let me) and helped her unpack the car. I left her a bottle of wine too and then said goodbye. It was hard to believe that my visit with the kids was over - hope it isn't long before I see them again... After getting gas at a nearby Exxon (1620), I got on I-81 and headed north again. About three hours later, Brenna called to talk to me some more about our trip. We were on the phone for about 30 minutes and it was a great way to end the day. During my drive to the north, I only stopped once (took a bathroom break just after passing I-80) and listened to several hours of audiobooks. I arrived at my hotel (Quality Inn) in Binghamton just after 2200. In the room, I organized my bags and did some reading. After a busy day, I went to bed at 2330. Looking back on the week, I was glad to recall how my daughters and I had a great time visiting with everyone and making some awesome memories. Highlights included: sampling brews at New Belgium, Wicked Weed and Thirsty Monk; learning about ciders and meads at Noble Cider Downtown; gorging ourselves at a Thanksgiving feast held at Isa’s Bistro; driving along the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway; hiking part of the Mountains to the Sea Trail; visiting a chocolate factory and a honey store; savoring delicious North Carolina BBQ at Bear’s Smokehouse; playing all sorts of crazy games in the cozy common area of The Albemarle; and visiting for hours on end with so many of our relatives. Very glad we live close enough to join in the fun and festivities and look forward to more family gatherings like this!

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 5
Somehow, I slept until almost 0730 this morning! After getting ready, I went down to breakfast and then drove to the nearby Enmarket for a gas fill-up (0840). Back in the room, I waited while the girls got ready for the day's excursions. We finally left the hotel at 0945 and drove to The Albemarle. Since we arrived on Wednesday, I've been exploring around (and inside) the old home (now a B&B) on the northeast edge of town. From this strategic location, the family is easily able to easily sortie for drinks, food and fun to multiple locations in the historic old mountain town. Case in point, this morning we met up with Mary, Leo, Shannon and Sean and made plans to go hiking along the Blue Ridge Parkway (south of town). Mollie, meanwhile, planned her own excursion to a chocolate factory with Kathy, Bonnie, Kelly, Ellen and Robert. Brenna, Sean and I (Leo, Mary and Shannon were in the other car) drove back towards our hotel (US-70) and then took a scenic drive to the west. Near the crossing of US-25, we stopped and walked on the Mountains to the Sea Trail for about an hour. We never did find a waterfall (our intended plan) but we got some exercise and had some fun. Afterwards, we continued west on the Blue Ridge Parkway until we approached I-26. I'd been following Leo and got confused when he started driving on some nearby surface streets. Eventually, Mary called to explain that we were headed to the Thirsty Monk Brewery in Ashville (Biltmore Park). We arrived at around 1230 and ordered some beers (I got a flight of four). Brenna tried some new stuff and we ordered a light lunch. The kids played Connect Four while we relaxed. Leo wanted to get some BBQ nearby but Mollie started texting and calling about wanting to join us for a visit to a Cidery in town. We therefore headed back to The Albemarle and met up with more members of the family. Kevin and Deborah (who had planned the Cidery trip) then told us they wouldn't be ready until almost 1600 so Brenna and I (along with Leo, Mary and Shannon) drove back to the College Street Parking Deck (1440). We walked around in the downtown area, going in an out of shops (my favorite place was called the Bee Charmer). Mollie and Ellen, meanwhile, had made a trip to a butcher shop (closed) and plant store (they got some greenery). We all converged at the Noble Cider Downtown Tap by 1500 and set up for some more flights and tasters. Everyone had fun and we enjoyed learning about the tastes and production of the ciders and meads there. Kevin and Deborah arrived a bit later and visited with us too. By the end, we also saw Chad and Terry. Still in search of BBQ, Leo led us across town to the Bear's Smoke House, where we ate dinner (ordered at 1755). The food was very good and it was great to wrap up our visit to Asheville with some genuine North Carolina BBQ. Afterwards, we walked around town and watched street performers and other evening activities (including the "pedal beer carts"). We were back at the parking garage by 1900 and headed back to The Albemarle (we saw Chad, Meghan, Theo and Erin on the way). For the rest of the evening, we visited, had drinks and snacks and the kids played games. We stayed until everyone started to leave for the evening. Our own family departed at 2200 and headed back to the hotel. Once there, we got packed up and talked until bed time (2300). Another great day!

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 4
Turkey Day! I was awake by 0600 and worked on my travel blog. At 0730, I went down to breakfast in the lobby while Brenna and Mollie continued to sleep. They finally woke up at around 0930 and went down to breakfast themselves. I could only convince Mollie to come with me to The Albemarle (Brenna stayed in the room). Once there, we visited for a little while with Shannon and Sean. However, most people were getting ready for a photo opportunity that was scheduled for lunch time. As a result, I took Mollie back to the hotel so should could get ready too. By 1230, our family was ready to leave for The Albemarle. When we got there, we found out that the photo had been moved to later in the day. Instead, we visited for a little bit (and met Theo for the first time). A bit later, everyone piled into several cars and we drove into downtown Asheville. The weather was great so I parked our car in a garage (1315) about half a mile from the restaurant and we walked the rest of the way. When we reached Isa's Bistro, we met up with over 30 members of the family. The restaurant was quite cozy and had a spacious basement dining area for our large group. The amazing meal consisted of two main courses and delicious dessert. Brenna and I both had the House Caesar Salad and Koch's Farms Herb Brined Turkey Breast while Mollie had the Poached Pear Salad and Steak Frites. We all enjoyed the Basque Cheesecake. Brenna had the special wine pairings that went with her selections while I tried some local beers. Mollie was very adventurous with her drink choice. I didn't actually see the girls much during the meal but everyone mingled and tried each other's food. What an amazing feast! At about 1630, we finished eating and walked back to the car. From there, we drove back to The Albemarle and met up with the rest of the family. Once the large group family photo had been taken successfully, everyone changed into something more comfortable. For the next six hours, the family visited, relaxed and ate/drank in the common area. Before we knew it, it was already 2200! I took the girls back to the hotel and we spent the next hour talking and winding down from the busy day. Bedtime was at 2315. What a successful Family Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 3
Awake by 0500, I spent a few hours teleworking in the room. I'd asked the girls to get up by 0700 but they slept right past that time. Eventually, I tried to bother them into getting up and they were not happy about being awakened "early". Instead, they fussed at me a good bit as we packed the car and then Brenna complained that she "couldn’t sleep because Dad was snoring". Finally (0800), we got on the road and drove a short distance to the south on US-11, where we stopped for a meal at Sisters Café in Marion. The restaurant had been recommended by Mollie’s friend (Annabelle) and was supposed to be really good. We ended up staying there for an hour (done at 0910) and had great food (Tot Waffle, French Toast, chicken sandwich, gourmet coffee, excellent grits). Before leaving (0920), I picked up some items (travel journal for Mollie and regular journal for Brenna) from the bookstore at the restaurant. After that, we drove south on I-81. We initially talked a lot about family and plans for December. Later, though, we ended up talking more about our cousins because it sounded like most people had plans for the whole day. Once in Tennessee, I got on I-26 and we reached Asheville by 1130. We stopped first at the bed & breakfast (The Albemarle) where Bonnie and Kathy were. Luckily, we (me and Mollie) managed to catch them before their departure for the Biltmore and visited for about 45 minutes. Brenna, who’d failed to get ready at our hotel room in the morning, initially stayed in the car. Eventually, though, I got "permission" for her to get cleaned up in one of the bathrooms there (this made her happy). Brenna later joined me and Mollie and we visited with the extended family. The girls had fun with little Cousin Robert (we also saw Ellen a bit later). Before leaving, I dropped off several bottles of Wilson Creek for everyone's enjoyment later. At 1220, we departed (following Tim) and drove to the New Belgium Brewery on the other side of Asheville. While there, we met up with some more of the cousins - it was great to see such a happy, rowdy group! I bought some beers/seltzers for my daughters and cousins (1250) - everyone enjoyed their drinks. At 1310, I got some pizza for the group and we stayed with our extended family until about 1430. After that, we drove a short distance to our hotel (Best Western) and checked in. The room we initially were given had not been cleaned - fortunately, we were assigned a new room quickly. For the next few hours, Mollie did homework, I teleworked and Brenna took a nap. I gave Mollie a lot of items I’d brought from home so she could pack them in her bags. At 1715, we left the hotel and drove to a nearby Target because Brenna wanted to try to find a new dress and Mollie wanted to find some earrings. After they’d been inside for about 30 minutes (successful shopping trip), they rejoined me at the car and we drove into downtown Asheville for dinner at the Wicked Weed (1815). Almost all the cousins were there and we had a nice time hanging out and trying the local drinks. At about 1945, we said goodbye to everyone else and drove to The Albermarle. While waiting for Bonnie to return from the Biltmore, we got to see Trish and Terry, (cousin) Erin, Meghan and Chad, Leo, Mary, Sean and Shannon. With the latter four, we caught up on a lot of news and had fun. After 2100 (Bonnie’s expected arrival time), Brenna initiated a fun card game with all of our younger cousins and it was a big hit. Just after 2200, the entire family (including Katie Bell) descended on the common area and there may have been 20+ people chatting, laughing and playing. When she arrived, Bonnie looked quite tired but told me she was ecstatic after being able to fulfill one of her lifelong dreams (of seeing the Christmas Town at the Biltmore). The family had a birthday cake for Meghan and we all celebrated with her. We also learned (surprise!) that she was expecting her second baby. By that point, I was extremely tired but agreed (at my daughters’ insistence) in staying later. One of the most surprising moments of the whole night was when we saw Elizabeth, who greeted me enthusiastically. By 2300, we finally left The Albemarle and returned to the Best Western. Brenna and Mollie cleaned up and organized while I wrapped up my telework day. Before settling down for the night, I read a book I'd brought. After a long, busy, fun-filled day, we were all asleep by midnight. Bring on the turkey!

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 2
Despite my late night, I still woke up at 0615 and started teleworking. At 0640, I went down to the hotel lobby and checked out. I also grabbed some food from the breakfast buffet (for the road). Once in my car, I stopped at a Sunoco gas station for a fill-up (0640) before heading south on Street Road. I reached I-95 after about six miles but there was a huge delay getting on the Interstate. Instead, I took US-13 towards the south and merged later (Cornwells Heights). After that, I had lots of traffic until reaching the outskirts of Philadelphia. Listening to audiobooks on the way helped pass the time... After I reached the Philadelphia Airport, the traffic sped up considerably. Upon entering Delaware, Google Maps suggested I get off the Interstate to avoid a toll. For once, I blew off the recommendation (0800) and made up almost 10 minutes of earlier traffic delay. I was in contact with Erin all the way to Baltimore and arrived at her apartment building at 0900. Without much delay, I met up with Erin in the lobby and got a parking pass. We then went up to eat breakfast (takeout from Potbelly's she'd already picked up for us). I gave Erin some items I'd brought from home - she liked some of them. It was nice to visit with Erin and Kiki! While in her apartment did some more teleworking until around 1030. Erin told me she was disappointed that work prevented her from going to the Thanksgiving Celebration in Asheville. Eventually (reluctantly), I said goodbye to Erin and got back on the road. As I continued south on I-95, it started to rain... While driving, I coordinated with Brenna to plan for meeting up with her in Harrisonburg and also talked to Mollie about her own schedule. Listened to more audiobooks as I crossed the DMV. Encountered traffic nasty (and rain was worse) all the way to I-495. Reluctantly (because I never know how things will go), I went around on the north side of DC on the Beltway. Luckily, I didn't see as much traffic as normal. Got on I-66 west of the City and, with the brand new HOV lanes, made good time to Haymarket. Encountered the typical annoying drivers all the way to I-81. Rain started to let up but then had to deal with the regular 18-wheeler craziness all the way to Harrisonburg. I made it to Brenna's school by 1315 and, since I was early, I went inside her classroom for the rest of the afternoon. I did help a little (probably one hour of volunteering) but teleworked the rest of the time. Brenna had some meetings until 1615 so I had over 45 minutes of quiet to do some more work projects. Mollie and Alex arrived in Harrisonburg at around 1630 and I met up with them in the rainy parking lot. We transferred Mollie's luggage to my rental car and then found Brenna (she was in the school office). Since she wasn't ready to leave work yet, Mollie and I drove to a nearby Arby's and got dinner (1645). We ate in the restaurant and then ordered some food for Brenna. Since Brenna had gone home in the meantime, we next drove to her apartment complex. Mollie and I waited in the car for Brenna while she was packing and I dropped off some items I'd brought her. Eileen called just as we were all getting in the car so I couldn't talk long, Meanwhile, the rain had really picked up and it was hard to see where we were going (bad lighting, bad lines on the roads - yikes!). We stopped for gas at Walmart in Harrisonburg (1815). After that, we made our way to I-81 and headed south. It was raining and dark and I had a heck of a time avoiding collisions with crazy truck drivers. We made one stop for gas and had to wait on a truck that foolishly wedged itself into the car parking area - shaking my head... Fortunately, we had some good talks on the way. It finally stopped raining after we passed Wytheville and we arrived in Marion soon after that. Since I've gotten to know the Travel Inn during all my years of hiking trips, I stopped in the lobby to see my friends (the proprietors). As I expected, they had available rooms at an affordable price. We were in our room by 2140 and I did some more teleworking. The girls did some re-packing and got cleaned up before we all went to bed (2300). Whew!

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 1
My daughters and I had been planning to go to Ashville for Thanksgiving after learning that much of our extended family would be there too. It was going to be the first time we'd see many of the relatives since before COVID-19 and it was so close that I told them I'd drive everyone. Last night, I did my packing and then got up VERY early this morning to start my work day. I teleworked until 1400 and then walked to the bus stop at the bottom of the hill. Next, I used Blue and Red AT lines to reach the Beverage King in West Lebanon and continued on foot to the Airport. I picked up my rental car at 1500 and drove back to my condo. Finishing my telework day, I cleaned up the house and double checked I had all of my stuff packed in the car. I was able to leave Hanover at 1615 and used I-89 and I-91 to reach Deerfield (MA). There, I got off the Interstate and drove east on MA-116. Fortunately, the traffic wasn't too bad. Listened to audiobooks on the way. It soon got dark but there was no precipitation. I arrived at Friendly's in Hadley (on MA-9, near UMASS) by 1740. Since my nephew, Johnny, was at band practice until 1815, I ordered dinner (Pastrami SuperMelt) and was done eating by the time he arrived. Wanting to visit for a while, I did get some ice cream while Johnny ate dinner himself. I gave him some items I'd brought from home so he could take them to his parents the next day. After a nice visit, we said goodbye and, at 1850, I headed south on MA-9. Before long, I was able to get back on I-91 and followed it until CT-15 (south of Hartford). There was much more traffic, it was dark and there was a LOT of construction (ugh). I entertained myself with more audiobooks so the time passed pretty quickly. Just before reaching the New York border, I stopped for bathroom break. Next, I took CT-15 all the way to the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287), which took me to I-87. Ultimately, I got on I-95 and crossed the George Washington Bridge. In NJ, I missed my turn for NY-17 and ended up on I-80 for a little while. After that, Google Maps took me on a series of roads (NY-21, the Garden State Parkway and surface streets) and I ended up going right through the middle of Newark (and some other towns on the east side of New Jersey). Along the way, I encountered so much construction delays that the drive got very frustrating. At one point, I got so annoyed with the directions that I just stayed on US-22 (despite Google's protests). Later, I changed to US-202 and followed it until I was able to get on NJ-31 (near Trenton). To cross the Delaware River, I took back roads (NJ-579, NJ-546) to the south and entered Pennsylvania at Washington's Crossing. On some of these roads, I encountered a lot of annoying traffic and began to tire of the drive. I made it onto I-295 just after midnight but made a stop at a rest area (for a break). I tried to make a hotel reservation but was unable to do it online - when I called the hotel, however, I learned that they had rooms (I hoped they might be willing to accept the online rate but wasn't sure). For this reason, I got back in the car (more I-295, US-1 and Street Road) and made my way to the Sleep Inn in Bensalem, PA (arrived at 0015). When I went inside, the rate the manager could give me was almost double what was online (that I hadn't been able to get). He suggested I call the Choice Rewards phone number and, by following his advice, I was able to get a Reward Night instead (1230). By 1245, I was in my room. It took a while to wind down after my driving experiences and the room was kind of loud. As a result, I didn't really get to sleep until 0130. Still, I'm glad I made so much progress today - tomorrow will be a lot easier...

Ludlow, VT (USA)
Bradford Dayhike & Dine #17! This month’s edition took place on the north side of Okemo Mountain in Ludlow, VT. I left home at around 1000 and used I-89 and I-91 (listened to audiobooks on the way) to drove to the Hartland Park & Ride (arrived at 1030). The rest of the group of 15 assembled by means of carpools set up for Park & Rides on I-91 in Bradford, Thetford and Hartland - they arrived at the last location at 1045. Consolidating further, we rode the rest of the way with our fearless leader, Jared. We used VT-131, VT-103 and VT-100 to get to Ludlow - the roads had all been repaired since my visit in early October. After driving all the way through town, we located the parking lot for the Healdville Trail. By 1145, all of the cars had reached the trailhead and we started up the mountain. It was chilly (30s), windy and overcast but the effort required for subsequent 1900 foot ascent warmed up my body pretty quickly. Still, I wore gloves and earmuffs for most of the hike. The trail was well maintained and I was surprised not to find a lot of mud. There was plenty of ice, though… Our group spread out pretty quickly but we mostly had the whole mountain to ourselves (only a few people passed us all day). There weren’t a lot of views until we got near the top of the mountain but then we were treated to a 360 panorama from the top of the (icy) old fire tower at the summit. We could see all the nearby mountains in NH and VT - some folks even claimed to see some of the ADK High Peaks. Ludlow (and the surrounding valley) were plainly visible, along with two different lifts for the Okemo Ski Resort. We’d seen (manmade) snow on some of the runs while driving but, unfortunately, none was close to our location. It was much colder at the ~3300 elevation and, soon after we’d all had our chance to climb the tower, it started to snow/sleet. We checked out one nearby chair lift but it wasn’t working. By that point, everyone else was ready to head straight down to the cars. Figuring I’d come this far and wasn’t yet tired, however, I took a (solo) detour to see another nearby lift and was treated to even better views of the town below. I could have walked farther to the main chairlift area but, instead, headed downhill. Before long, I caught up to the rest of the group and finished with them. The snow increased before we were done hiking (1600) but everyone was able to stay warm and avoid falls on the slippery rocks. Usually, we have gone to lunch after our hikes but the late hour meant it was nearly dark and closer to dinner time. For this reason, more than half the group departed early, rather than joining us for a meal at Killarney’s Irish Pub. It was their loss… The food was good and I enjoyed the beer (Rutland Red) and conversation. We wrapped up our time at the restaurant by 1730 and, after I caught a ride back to Hartland (VT-100, VT-103 and VT-131), I was driving Nessie again by 1815. I used I-91 to get back to Hanover (listened to audiobooks on the way) and made it to my condo by 1900. Overall, it was a great day on the trail, filled with awesome Upper Valley camaraderie. The cherry on top was the delicious food at another fine venue. Once again, we had Dayhike & Dine success!

[started teleworking very early - had to drive to the Boston area to pick up my new ID card for work so left my condo at 0620 - weather really great - used I-89, NH-3A, I-93 and I-95 to reach Burlington, MA - listened to audiobooks on the way - the only traffic I encountered was at the I-93/I-95 split - arrived at ID office at 0840 - got into the building before my appointment and was out the door again before it officially even started - on my way home again immediately - reversed itinerary (I-95, I-93, NH-3A, I-89) - talking to Erin almost the whole way home - arrived at my condo just before 1100 - teleworked until almost 1600]

Manchester, NH (USA)
After missing out on the Veterans Day deals last year (I was in South America), I tried to maximize the success of my search for "free stuff" this year by researching extensively. This morning, I left home early (0645) and rove (via I-89 and I-93N) to Concord (listened to audiobooks on the way). I arrived at a Mall east of the Capitol (Fort Eddy Road) by 0745. My first stop in this area was at Panera, which purported to offer a free bagel. However, the staff members said they were not a "corporate store" and were not participating. As a consolation prize, I ordered a discounted cinnamon roll from my account online and it was ready by 0755. I next went to the Hannaford and got some free stuff, make bonus rewards purchases and get a 10% discount (done at 0805). Leaving Concord, I took I-93S and got off the highway at NH-3A. I tried to call Erin but she was busy. Just before passing the end of I-89, I got a free donut at a Dunkin in Hooksett (0800). I also got a gas fillup (with rewards discount) at the Irving next door (0815) . Continuing towards Manchester, I picked up a free breakfast meal at the Wendy's drive through in Hooksett (near I-93 merge) at about 0845. Back on the road, I drove south on NH-3A until I could access I-293; used that road to reach US-3 and then stopped at IHOP (0845). Sat down in the restaurant and got free breakfast (RW&B pancakes) and a large OJ. I was finished eating at 0930 and next drove (via US-3 and I-293) to the Mall of New Hampshire in Manchester (arrived at 0945). I walked around to get some steps and plan for my next series of free items (I had to wait for things to open). Just after 1000, I got a free Classic Roast Beef sandwich at Arby's. I also tried to get free fries at O'Charley's but they said they weren't participating. Walking through Dick's Sporting Goods, I made my way over to Dave and Busters, which I'd heard had a lunch deal and $10 of free game play. They were just as generous as advertised and I sat down to eat a delicious meal of chicken (seasoned with a mushroom gravy), green beans and mashed potatoes. While I was eating, the bartender and I talked for a bit (I was the only customer) and the manager took three old D&B cards I'd kept for several years and merged them into a brand new (fully charged) Power Card (1030). After I was done eating, I thought about playing some games but, instead, decided to try to get some more stuff. At the nearby Red Robin, there was a free burger but I would have had to sit down inside the restaurant (they allowed takeout two years ago). I decided to go to Buffalo Wild Wings instead. While there, I ate a second lunch (10 free wings and a large mug of root beer) and stayed until 1150. By this point, I was stuffed and no longer in the mood for food. Rather than trying to find more free stuff in the Mall of New Hampshire, I drove across NH-28 to pick up Texas Roadhouse voucher - there was no line and I was back on my way by 1200. Driving further down the long parking lot there, I stopped at the Staples and, using some gift cards and a Veterans Day 25% discount, picked up some more office items (1225). Focusing completely on "to go" or non-food items, I then drove (via NH-28 and I-293) to where I'd seen a Little Caesar's on the map in Manchester (on the west side of the river). They were offering a free pizza but were swamped by lots of other Vets like me - ha! I stood in a line while they made more pizza and talked to the other guys. Each had a suggestion for where the others should go and I learned about a few other good deals very close to where I was. After getting my pizza (1245), I drove down the street to the Infinity Car Wash and got my car cleaned for free (done at 1300). Next, I drove to the nearby McDonalds and got a free combo meal to go (done at 1315). Pretty tired (and still feeling full) after my successful expedition, I called Erin and talked to her for over an hour as I made my way (via side streets and US-3) back to Hooksett. I then used NH-3A and I-89 to locate the New Hampshire Audubon McLane Center (Silk Road, Concord). Arriving at around 1425, I took a walk on the grounds. They had an amazing Raptor Mews area - I’ve never been so close to Eagles, Hawks or Owls! The trail system wasn't too extensive so I decided to look for somewhere else to walk. My Google Maps showed that a trail I'd seen along the side of I-89 was only a short distance away so I drove over there. However, I arrived to find a parking area with a gated road that allowed pedestrian traffic. Even though I didn't know where the road went, I took advantage of the good weather and just started walking. As often happens, I “pulled a thread” by not making plans and (with help from some locals) ended up on the grounds of the swanky private school: Saint Paul's. Beautiful campus! It looked like there was lots of history and the architecture was impressive - what a nice way to wrap up my Veterans Day excursion! It was getting close to 1600 by the time I reached my car again. I thought about going back into the city and getting some more free food but, since I was still feeling quite full and didn't want to waste time after a successful day, I made my way back to I-89. Heading home, I made good time (very little traffic) and arrived at my condo by 1700. Feeling pretty good about all the loot I got today. One of the vets I met at Little Caesar's told me: "I feel like I'm finally getting rewarded for my service." After all the businesses I patronized today, I can't disagree!

[after work (1500), I drove over to White River Junction (work call on the way) - between 1520 and 1750, I volunteered (with other members of Sacred Heart Parish) at the Listen Community Dinner - I helped prepare, serve and clean up the kitchen - dinner was chicken fajitas and was very popular - afterwards, drove home through sleety rain (arrived at 1815) and did some more teleworking (late calls)]

Montreal Pilgrimage - Day 2
It was quite noisy in the halls of the John XXIII Pavilion during the night but the building was warm and I had my white noise machine. With the time change ("Fall Back"), I only ended up sleeping until 0430. I read for about an hour before I got ready and left our lodgings for a walk. Almost immediately, I encountered a Holy Cross Bishop (from northeast India) and talked with him for a bit. I then took a circuit around the immediate neighborhood and then walked down Queen Mary Road to Cote des Neiges again. Once there, I checked out stores and restaurants there before backtracking to the Oratory - I arrived at the Pavilion at about 0655, just before the breakfast buffet began. In the communal dining area, I ate a nice meal (fruit, croissants, cereal) and was joined about 15 minutes later by Joe and Jason. We ate together and talked for a little bit before going back to our rooms to pack up for departure. By 0745, we met in the lobby and then loaded up the car. Because parking on the hill was at such a premium, we walked up the hill to the Oratory (0800) instead. The views from the southern peak of Mount Royal were tremendous! We got some photos before heading inside, where we did some Eucharistic Adoration (30 minutes) and went to Confession. When I finished with that, the earlier Mass was just letting out so I got to prep myself for the French Mass that we planned to attend a bit later. By 0930, we were all together again as the service began. It was hard to follow all the prayers but there were some helpful books in the pews. I definitely noticed some differences in the order of the Mass and enjoyed the interesting prayers. Best part: the music was wonderful! Afterwards, Joe tried to get some St. Joseph's Oil blessed while Jason lit some candles for members of our Parish. Meanwhile, I got to witness a wonderful image of comfort as the Counseling Priest assisted a young lady (passing by the place where I was sitting) who was obviously dealing with a great sorrow. He was really caring and helpful to her. Together again with Joe and Jason, we walked through the Oratory one more time. After that, we walked down the hill to our car. The weather was so wonderful, I suggested a walk through the Mount Royal Park and the guys agreed with that suggestion. To get there, we used Queen Mary Road and entered the Cote des Neiges Cemetery. Joe and Jason were very patient while I located the gravesites of my ancestors (1110). After that, we maneuvered out of the cemetery and drove up to the parking area for Mount Royal (1130). I had a bit of trouble trying to figure out how to pay for parking on the strange (French) machine but, once that was resolved, we walked a short distance to the Mount Royal Chalet and got the amazing view of Montreal I'd last seen in 2022. We also toured inside the Chalet and then walked over to the big cross on the north end of the mountain. Back at Jason's car by 1225, we then started to make our way back to A-15. Fortunately, we managed to get there with some side streets and then crossed the Saint Lawrence without traffic. Once on Route 10, we proceeded to A-35 (backtrack to Saint Jean sur Richelieu). Joe had seen a place there called Poutine and Company so we found it again (1335) and ate a delicious lunch. We each got a different kind of poutine and it was all really good. After we'd eaten our fill, we started south on A-35 and QC-133. This time, we headed straight for the I-89 crossing at Saint Armand. Along the way, we saw lots of evidence of the impending opening of the A-35 extension of the highway. We arrived at the Customs Checkpoint at 1510 and had to wait nearly an hour to cross. When we reached the border guard, our talk with him lasted less than five minutes. Once back in the US, we drove (via I-89) and made great time to Lebanon (NH), arriving at my condo at 1800. What a wonderful two days of prayer and penance! Thinking back on all the activities we did that were meaningful to us as Catholics, the highlights were definitely: attending a French Mass, experiencing many unique holy areas (most honored St. Joseph) within the Oratory, learning about the exemplary life of Saint Andre Bessette (“Frere Andre”), spending the night (on the Oratory grounds) in the John XXIII Pavilion, encountering members of the Congregation of the Holy Cross (caretakers of the Oratory and founders of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend) as they performed their duties, walking through colorful forests (at Bois Summit and Mount Royal Park), marveling at the amazing vistas available from the mountain shrine and paying respects to Owen Coogan at Notre Dame des Neiges Cemetery. We also found three wonderful Quebecois restaurants that served some unbelievable food. Overall, our weekend away was the perfect blend of faith, history, language and culture. Montreal’s St. Joseph Oratory was definitely a worthwhile site for a pilgrimage and I hope to return again soon!

Montreal Pilgrimage - Day 1
Some of my friends from the Men of St. Joseph group at my church suggested that we take a Pilgrimage to Montreal earlier in the year. Due to difficulties aligning schedules, several attempts were made but canceled. This morning, we finally got everyone on the same page (or so I thought) and planned to leave very early in the morning for Canada. However, Jason slept late so our planned meet-up of 0615 (at my condo) didn't happen. Instead, he came by to get me at about 0800 and we went to pick up Joe. We finally departed Lebanon at 0830 and drove north on I-89. We had a good talk on the way as Jason drove us through light rain. As we approached Burlington, we started to get Apple Maps messages about road closures - Jason's iPhone eventually switched us to a new route (VT-78, Alburg Springs Road) that took us off the Interstate at Swanton (VT) and across the Canadian Border at Clarenceville (QC). The border guard there asked us a lot of questions about why we used that crossing and, when we told him about the Apple Maps, he clarified that the other road was actually open. He then (nicely) warned us not to try to come back the same way unless we arrived before 1600. From the checkpoint, we drove north to the town of Henryville, where we got on QC-133. We then drove to the town of Saint Jean Sur Richelieu and crossed the Richelieu River. Stopping for lunch at an Eggsquis (1215), we ate a delicious meal of breakfast casserole (me), strawberry and chocolate crepes (Jason) and eggs/bacon/potatoes (Joe). We were finished at around noon and, from there, we drove north on A-35. We switched to Route 10 and crossed the Saint Lawrence River without incident. Next, we used A-15 to reach the Mount Royal Area. Tthere was a bit of traffic over there and, even after we got off at Queen Mary Road, we had trouble with construction near the St. Joseph's Oratory (our destination). We ended up driving around the area (without success) until we finally found a way into the park (1345). We did get lucky in finding a parking spot at the top of the mountain and were able to walk right inside the Oratory immediately. The weather had improved tremendously and we got some amazing views of the western side of Montreal from the front of the building. Inside, we walked through the Basilica (noting lots of references to Saint Andre Bessette) and checked out the Crypt Chapel, Votive Chapel, Tomb of Brother Andre, Heart of Brother Andre, exhibit on the life of the Saint, Museum and the Original Chapel. We also visited the gift shop and Joe bought us each a Commemorative Coin from the Pilgrimage site. I hadn't realized that the Holy Cross Fathers (who I'd first encountered at Notre Dame in South Bend, IN), were the caretakers of the Oratory. Also, I hadn't realized that Brother Andre had been canonized in 2010. The Way of the Cross and Garden (along with much of the grounds) were closed for construction so we didn't get to see those. After a few hours inside the Oratory (1600), we took a walk to the east and entered the Bois Summit (Summit Woods). The trails over there were really nice and the weather was excellent. We found a viewpoint on the far east side that provided a wonderful view of the old city of Montreal. Backtracking to the Oratory, we headed down the hill again to check into our lodging (the John XXIII Pavilion). By 1705, we were in our rooms. The place was sort of a hostel, with beds and sink in the rooms but a shared bathroom down the hall. Joe and I had both booked rooms so Jason decided to stay with Joe and I ended up by myself. After getting cleaned up, we took a walk down Queen Mary Road to Cote des Neiges, where I'd seen a French restaurant called the Duc de Lorraine. We had a magnificent dinner (Joe and I split a huge burger, salad and fries while Jason ate a huge helping of raviolis) and dessert (some of the tasty pastries they had), along with a Belgian beer, and didn't get done until 1925. We walked back to our lodging but didn't reach the Oratory property in time us to attend the late Mass at 1930. That was OK with me and I spent the rest of the night reading in my room. I found out later that Jason ended up using the chapel in our building for some personal prayer and reflection so that was a nice consolation for missing the service. Meanwhile, I went to bed at 2200. Overall, a great day - filled with a lot of amazing experiences. Looking forward to more tomorrow!

Woodstock, VT (USA)
This morning, I left my condo (0700) and drove to West Lebanon. I did some "window shopping" at Shaw's and picked up items at Target. After that (0825), I drove west on I-89 and US-4 and made my way to Woodstock, VT (listened to audiobooks on the way). I had planned (as I did last year) to volunteer for the Family Halloween Event at the Billings Farm and Museum and made it in time to be ready for the first visitor. It was cold and rainy but I still had a good time running the Pumpkin Bowling station. Lots of little kids came by to visit - there were some great costumes! After getting done with my shift, I ate some of the staff food (sandwiches, fruit, chips, cookies) before departing (1345). I'd brought gear with me so I could go on a hike nearby but, since the weather was miserable, I retraced my steps for home. I made it to my condo by 1415. Fun times!

Littleton, NH (USA)
After several 8-12 mile bike rides on the Northern Rail Trail this year, I decided to return to the Ammonoosuc Rail Trail and try to complete it. I spoke with Eileen very early in the morning and took care of some chores. At 0810, I left my house and drove to Bradford (I-91, VT/NH-25). From 0855 to 0925, I did some "Secret Shopping" at Hannaford. Afterwards, I drove across the Connecticut River and headed north (using River Road, NH-10, US-302) towards Lisbon. My was going well until I spotted a parking lot that I thought I’d used when last in the area (DEC 2022). After parking and getting geared up, I headed south along the Ammonoosuc River. It was sunny and warm, a rare treat for late October! The leaves were also very pretty. In the first mile, I started having deja vu and wondered if I hadn’t already walked the section. Sure enough, I soon spotted the outline of the distant Bath Covered Bridge and realized I’d fallen victim to a "Senior Moment"... The end result was two miles that didn’t count for my goal of peddling the last 9.2 miles of the trail. Back in my car, I drove north again and found the correct parking lot on the north side of Lisbon itself. I then (1100) rode south to locate the Fire Station, my last backtrack point, and then reversed to the north with the intent of reaching Littleton. Things went well for the first hour and the only concerns I had were the constant ATVs that kept passing me - everyone was out enjoying the day. The sharp gravel stones that I had to cross made my bike shudder and I heard some disconcerting noises coming from the tires. About six miles into my ride, I noticed that the rear wheel looked flat. My bicycle has “presta” type inflation valves and they haven’t been my friends up to this point. Fortunately, I did manage to reinflate my tire and continued north. About 15 minutes later, I realized that the tire was flat again. Thus began yet another “Jim misadventure”… By this point, I was very close to the northern end of the trail so I continued towards I-93. But then it got really overcast - minutes later, the beautiful sunny day turned all the way into a full on drenching rain shower. I kept thinking of Sideshow Bob and his “uuughhh” sound… Still stopping every 10-15 minutes to refill my tire, I managed to reach Littleton (I could see all the stores on US-302 on the other side of the river). At that point, I didn’t care that I was only 0.2 miles from the trail’s end - instead of finishing, I started backtracking at the I-93 overpass (1230). It continued raining and my tire kept going flat as I struggled my way back towards Lisbon. With four miles to go, my tire finally refused to take any more air and I had to start walking… Muddy and discouraged, I trudged slowly south. What else could happen? While I was wondering about this, the sun made a reappearance in all its heated brilliance - for the rest of my “bike ride”, I got treated to one more Summer weather hike. Rolling up to my car at 1430, I was quite relieved to be finished with about 20 total miles on the bike trail... Once I was ready to leave Lisbon, I started driving towards White River Junction (using US-302, NH-10, River Road, NH/VT-25 and I-91), hoping to be able make it to my swim lane reservation at the UVAC. Within 20 minutes, however, it became clear that I simply didn't have enough time to swim before they closed. Instead, I went home (arrived at 1520). After cleaning the mud off my bike (and myself), I went to Mass at St. Denis (1700). When I got home later in the evening, I decided that I'm going to walk the last 0.2 of the Ammonoosuc Rail Trail... One thing is certain: my kayaking and biking adventures in 2023 have been anything but boring!

White River Junction, VT (USA)
This morning, I went to Mass at Sacred Heart in Lebanon (0800). Afterwards (0845), got gas at Jake's Irving and then drove to West Lebanon to buy some groceries at Shaw's (0910). Next, I headed over to White River Junction (UVAC) to swim for 60 minutes (72 lengths, 36 laps), 10 minute sauna, bike for 13 minutes (3.4 miles), row for 10 minutes and lift weights. Once finished, I drove home (arrived at 1145). You may have noticed that the workout was not typical - I achieved a big milestone (for me) during my lap swim today: 1 full mile (72 lengths = 36 laps) in an hour! The feat was made possible by more than a year’s worth of weekly, 45 minute, sessions at the pool. Perhaps it’s not a big deal to other swimmers but it means I can still do something I last attempted at API in Pensacola back in 1992. Many thanks to Upper Valley Aquatic Center, White River Junction VA Medical Center (WRJ VAMC) and BE Fit Physical Therapy for encouraging me to improve my physical and mental wellness!

Potsdam Party Weekend - Day 2
Eileen texted me at 0530 (confirming plans for breakfast) and it woke me up. I spent the next few hours reading and then got ready to go. It had rained for most of the night but was only damp when I was packing the car. By 0800, the uncertainty of the afternoon/evening made me doubt that I'd need my hotel room for another night so I checked out (0815) and drove over to Walmart to do some walking inside the (dry) store. After about 30 minutes, I drove east (on NY-11B) to the Airport Diner and met Eileen, her parents and Roger for breakfast (0900). This time, Joan and George told me that they actually remembered me (!) and we all had a good laugh. We spent the next 90 minutes eating and listening to stories about Eileen's NWP Expedition. It was still pretty rainy outside but Eileen suggested that we head over to her house to get the dogs for a walk on the Red Sandstone Trail. Not really sure where the day was going, I still went and ended up getting to visit some more with Eileen's parents, her kids, Roger. Steve & Aviva when they showed up just after we did. After getting organized, the adults and dogs piled into two cars and we drove to the trailhead in Hannawa Falls. The rain let up long enough for us to walk nearly the full length of the trail and the dogs had a great time (Mika and Sadie treed several squirrels and Juneau reveled in being outside). We all talked a lot and weren't done until nearly 1230. After that, we drove back to Eileen's house. Some people (Roger, Steve, Aviva) left immediately but I stayed and had some tea and cookies while Eileen's family figured out their plans for the rest of the weekend. By 1400, I decided it was time to go (I didn't want Eileen to have to worry about entertaining me) and said goodbye. From Potsdam (1420), I drove (it rained all the way) home in one sitting (listening to audiobooks to pass the time). I used NY-72, NY-11B, NY-458, Wait Road, NY-458, NY-30, NY-86, Old Military Road, NY-73 and NY-9N all the way to the NY/VT border at Crown Point. Once in Vermont, I used VT-125, US-7, VT-125, VT-100, Bethel Mountain Road, VT-12, VT-107 and I-89. In addition to the rain, there was lots of construction (single lanes) in Vermont and lots of traffic headed south. It got really bad towards the end - it was dark and stormy as I crossed Connecticut River. Relieved to be home by 1840. Glad I got away to celebrate with Eileen and her friends!

Potsdam Party Weekend - Day 1
Eileen recently completed her kayak/paddling expedition across the entire Northwest Passage and her daughter invited me to a "Welcome Home" celebration for her in Potsdam. Of course, I was very happy to have a chance to see her after more than four months! Since the party wasn't until the evening, I took my time getting ready this morning. In fact, I didn't pack until I woke up but was still ready to leave by 0800. As I was leaving home, I stopped for gas fillup at Irving in West Lebanon (0830) because I knew the prices would be much higher in Vermont and New York. After that, I got on I-89 and drove all the way to the Burlington area (listened to audiobooks on the way). The weather was OK and I thought about stopping for a hike. More of a priority, though, I wanted to try out the Lake Champlain Ferry (from Grand Isle to Cumberland Head) and ended up heading straight there. I arrived at 1030 and didn't have to wait long to drive onto the boat - we departed shortly afterwards. Immediately after that, I received a call so stayed in the car for the first half of the crossing. The wind was pretty strong so the water was very rough. Towards the end of the 15 minute ride, I got out of my car and explored the decks (it was a rather simple boat). After we docked on the New York side, I didn't follow the other cars. Instead, I hugged the coast of Cumberland Head and located the windy shoreline of Cumberland Bay. There were LOTS of people windsurfing and para-surfing! At one point, I walked near the beach and took photos/videos of them. At the same location, there was also a sign that described the lore around "Champy" (purported sea monster in the area; I didn't see him). I was getting ready to drive into Plattsburgh but then saw a larger beach area to the northwest. As a result, I drove over to Cumberland Bay State Park and watched the surfers some more. After that, I got on NY-314 and then used US-9 to reach Plattsburgh. Thought maybe I'd find something interesting to do in town but never did. Instead, I started planning my route towards the Ausable Chasm. When I figured out that US-9 had some closures on the way south (Google Maps kept wanting me to get on I-87), I backtracked to Gus' Red Hots Restaurant for lunch. At the "diner bar", I had the Michigan Red Hot (hot dog with chili) and the Lunch Special (grilled tuna sandwich and hamburger mac soup). Everything was delicious! I was done eating by 1130 and then got on the Interstate, which I used to reach NY-9N. I next drove through Keesville and made my way to US-9. From there, I located the bridge (one lane closed) for the Chasm (1220). There was a some commercialism there ($20 to enter the park) but, since it looked like rain, I walked all around the area nearby instead. There were good photo opportunities in several places; with foliage at peak colors, the whole experience was great! I walked around along the edge of the gorge on both sides and marveled at the awesome power of the water. The place looked like it would be an even more fun place to visit during the Summer - lots of adventure activities. It started raining just as I got back in my car (1250). Regardless, what a perfect break on a pretty Fall day! From the Chasm, I had a hard time setting up a straight line route to Potsdam. Each suggestion from Google Maps suggested long routes (but faster speeds) north and south of the area where I wanted to go. In the end, I used a paper map - besides, I didn't have wireless signal anyway... I drove west again on US-9, NY-9N, Silver Lake Road (near Au Sable Forks). After that, I drove through Black Brook and Hawkeye. Because the bridge (across the Saranac River) was out on County Road 4, I had to use County Road 1 to go all the way to NY-3. Then I was able to head west again and rejoin the route I'd wanted to use (County Road 26). This winding, rough road took me across a mountain ride (near Loon Lake) to NY-30. After crossing that highway, I took County Road 14 to St. Regis Falls. Next, I used NY-458 and NY-11B to Potsdam. I arrived at my hotel (the Potsdam Inn) just after 1500 and checked into my room. After reading for a little bit, I walked over to the nearby Walmart and walked around in their parking lot. At 1630, I returned to my room and got ready for Eileen's party. Once I felt prepared, I drove to Robin's house (near Sanfordville) and arrived at 1710. Eileen arrived a bit later and everyone cheered for her. Her parents had driven up to see her (a surprise) and there were probably 40 other well-wishers and fans there. Robin (and some pot-luck friends) had made a great spread (I added some wine I'd brought from Montview Vineyard). I reacquainted myself with many of Eileen's friends I hadn't seen since 2018 but was otherwise unsure about many of the names/faces. At one point, I ended up in a conversation with Eileen's parents (George and Joan) and they didn't realize we hadn't seen each other since 1991. But I played the role of a good "friend of Eileen you've never met before" well and they never seemed to suspect anything. Eileen made a speech at one point, we had some champagne, Aviva played the guitar, Heidi showed off an amazing cake she'd made and the party went well past it's scheduled end time (1900). I had a few chances to meet up with Eileen through the night but she was definitely the star of the show, with lots of people who wanted to ask questions about her Northwest Passage Expedition. I did get to say goodbye to her when I was leaving (2000) and she asked me to meet her and her family/friends for breakfast in the morning (I agreed). After that, I drove back to my hotel, where I spent the rest of the evening reading. Bed was at 2300. Very glad I could be here for Eileen's special party!

Enfield, NH (USA)
I planned on attending the “Together Again” Celebration at the Enfield Shaker Museum this afternoon so it kind of interfered with my normal Thursday Happy Hour at Jesse's. Ending my work day at 1530, I managed to squeeze in one drink with Bruce, Denis and Ed before leaving (1630) for Enfield. I parked at the old La Salette Shrine and walked across NH-4A to the main buildings of the Shaker property. They were opened for tours to the attendees on this day but I first headed to the location where there were supposed to be hors de oeuvres and speeches. After I got inside (1700), I spent the evening reveling with other supporters of the recent successful capital campaign (coordinated by the Enfield Shaker Museum) to buy the La Salette Shrine when it closed on September 30. Somehow, 400ish donors raised over $2M and reunited Shaker property with more of their land that the Museum already owned. Most everyone agreed to support the initiative because they wanted to retain the scenic and historic nature of the area on the south side of Lake Mascoma. For my part, I also wanted to preserve the pretty hillside above the lake that has a rather arduous Stations of the Cross and statues of the Apparition of Our Lady of La Salette. Both are quiet places of reflection that would likely have been replaced by housing development. In addition to some food, celebratory drinks (prosecco) and a discussion about future fundraising, I was given a chance to look around in the building. I saw some good examples of furniture made by the sect and learned a little about their religious practices. Before leaving, I talked to staff and other donors. Finished at 1825, I left Enfield (via NH-4A and US-4) and drove home (arrived at 1845). Enjoyable evening!

Enfield, NH (USA)
After work today (1530), I drove to Forwards Garage to volunteer with the VA Medical Center (WRJ) Adaptive Sports Team. I arrived at 1545 and found John raring to go (on the side-by-side bike) - he said that he hoped I was going with him because he wanted to "go farther than last time," Jen said it was OK and we departed just after 1600. As he'd hoped, John and I rode even farther today on the Northern Rail Trail than we'd ever gone before: down/up the big hill above Pillsbury Street and all the way to Hardy Road - around six miles from our starting point! We turned around, feeling elated since this was the last planned bike ride of the year, and made our way back to Forwards Garage. On the way, we marveled at the pretty foliage (especially on Mascoma Lake) and the "friendly" straw people on the NRT (within the Enfield town limits). We actually only encountered two other bikers from the VA Team because the rest had already turned around. John and I were finished by 1800 (after a total of 12 miles of biking!)] and I helped Jen with some of the other Veterans and cleanup. Afterwards, I headed home at 1815 (arrived by 1830). What a great season of biking with the VA!
