DC Business Trip - Day 4
One more day in DC... This morning, I woke up at 0600 (sans alarm) at the Holiday Inn (Washington Capital) National Mall. I teleworked in my room until 0815 (skipped breakfast) and then walked over to the building where my Boss and all our colleagues work. I found an empty cubicle and worked there for the rest of the morning. Occasionally, a team member stopped by to pick my brain on work-related topics but it was otherwise rather quiet. I ended up returning (at 1200) to the FAA Cafe for lunch (got some special sandwiches made by the nice "Food Truck" lady). Once again, I wasn't able to find anyone available to join me at my table. Meanwhile, the building where I'd been working all morning had a major evacuation - I only learned this when my Boss asked me to join her at the Rally Point. Things made more sense when I (finally) got a text from building security. By the time I reached the location where everyone was supposedly waiting, I found they had been cleared back into the building. I had just sat down to continue working in my cubicle when there was a second building evacuation. This time, I followed everyone else outside and we waited for about 20 minutes at the Rally Point. I had brought all my stuff, though, because I wasn't certain we'd be allowed back inside. My fears were for naught, though, and I ended up having a few more hours of time for cubicle work and a pop-up, in-person meeting. Due to a last minute request to join my Boss for a short discussion (after her schedule finally cleared), I wasn't able to leave the office until just after 1630. I'd planned to walk to the Happy Hour with my friends but this idea was dashed. Thinking I was late and that everyone else was already at the venue (Proper 21), I raced into the Metro tunnel at L'Enfant Plaza before realizing that Stephanie hadn't left either (she'd hoped to walk with me). So, at 1640, she and I took an Orange/Blue/Silver line train to Metro Center. Thank goodness she was with me, since my sleep-addled brain was not functioning properly. With Stephanie's guidance, we walked the rest of the way to Proper 21, where we met Kelly and John (already enjoying the evening). We ordered a lot of drinks and some light snacks ("dinner"). It was great to catch up with everyone and I had a good time. So much time seems to have passed since we were all in the same place! Our celebration was finished by 2100 and I was feeling pretty good until Stephanie suggested we split the bill three ways. Again, my brain was still on some other time-zone (in Asia?) and I didn't protest. The pricy result sort of soured things in my mind but I kept this to myself. Afterwards, walked together towards the Metro Center Station. It was much cooler by then (low 30s) and I realized I still hadn't gotten my 10K steps. Hoping to avoid a repeat of my time in the hotel hallways, I abruptly said goodbye to my friends and made my way back (on foot) to L'Enfant Plaza. By 2130, I'd arrived at the Holiday Inn (Washington Capital) National Mall and spent the rest of the evening packing, ordering an Uber for the morning and catching up on my reading. Despite my best intentions to get to sleep early, I didn't end up turning out the light until 2200. It's going to be a LONG day tomorrow!
