Grapevine, TX (USA)

We started a tradition a few years ago - in 2006 - when we first visited the Great Wolf Lodge during the Holidays. In 2007 we spent the night on the 30th of December and saw that lots of fun events were scheduled for New Year's Eve. We decided to check the place out this year! One of the nice things about staying the night at the Lodge is that you can start to swim in the indoor water park at 1300L and stay until the following night at 2100L. The kids were understandably excited. Something new: wristbands with key codes for the room and to buy things - very convenient! We spent around four hours non-stop on the water slides, in the wave pool and even on the "lazy river." The kids got a little tired around 1700 and we had some dinner before they decided to participate in the "Snow-Ball" - complete with karaoke, face painting, photos, game-shows, story time and (at midnight) a balloon drop. Mollie and I checked out the Wiley Wolf story hour and watched all of his animal friends sing in the Great Hall. By 2300 she was pretty tired and we went back to the room to watch the New York countdown to the New Year. The twins and Nicky stayed up until after midnight and had a good time at the Dance Party in the Great Hall. Whew!!!

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 5

Got up around 0800 to ensure we made it out of town early enough for the weather (rain) and traffic. Visited Bonnie's room one more time to say goodbye - lots of other people up already for the long drive back to New Mexico (some left from the airport around 0700!). Had no traffic at all on the way. We drove on I-35 all the way until we were near Killeen (Fort Hood) and then got off on TX-317. We had been seeing some rolling hills all day, but now we started to see farmland and ranches - very rural. My goal was to stop in Crawford - "home" of former President Bush ("Western White House"). The place was heavily visited from 2000 until early this year - but now it is almost a ghost town. Lots of shops were closed and there was really only one little restaurant (more like a deli counter). We stopped in and talked to a nice lady working there and got some delicious lunch (brisket, chicken, sausage). She described how it had been during the hey-day and told us how we could find the Bush ranch. We bought a few souvenirs and took a picture in front of the Crawford welcome sign. After a little exploring we found the area where the ranch was (you almost can't tell it is there). Explored a few more ranch/farm roads and came across an old one-room schoolhouse. It was open - pictures, old desks and an old woodstove - local ranchers were setting up for a community Christmas party. Folks were very friendly and told us about their experiences during the Bush presidency (nosy Secret Service people, helicopters, peace-demonstrators, closed roads and news crews). They seemed to be glad that it was all over... Got back on the road around 1400 and took some side roads towards Hillsboro. We drove along the Lake Whitney reservoir (might be some good swimming on a hot Texas day!). Weather deteriorating but had no problem getting home on I-35W. The other side of the interstate, however, was a totally different story (miles and miles of backup). We were pretty lucky in both directions, I guess. Home around 1600 - good to be back!

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 4

Decided to relax in the room today while the girls all went shopping and exploring. Turned out that nearly everyone had plans, so I watched football and stayed in the room. Meanwhile, Mollie was having fun at the nearby Children's Museum. Ientured out for lunch and found Schilo's deli. It is a nearly-100 year old place (started by immigrants) and they have lots of traditional German food. I had a delicious Rueben sandwich with some locally made root-beer. Felt very satisfied afterwards. After I explored for about an hour, I met up with Nicky and girls (around 1500) and we went to meet everyone in Bonnie's room. The Notre Dame football game was on this evening (though no-one knew the time) but everyone visited for several hours, knowing we all have to leave tomorrow. Tim and I ordered some huge (18") pizzas for the kids and we were able to see most of the game - ND lost again! Around 2200, Chuck and Leo said they wanted to go out - so Tiger, Tim, Andy and I went down to have drinks at Dirty Nelly's. It was pretty crowded, so we actually sat next door and waited for it to clear out a little. After midnight, most everyone realized they were pretty tired. Said goodbyes - knowing we are all leaving early. It really felt like Thanksgiving was over...

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 3

What a great day! We had to wake up earlier than normal (for these trips, anyway) so we would be able to get to Sea World and buy tickets before it opened. Arrived around 0900 with time to pick up some breakfast at McDonalds. No problem getting the tickets - beat the crowd - and we even got to go inside at 0930. Enjoyed the Clydesdales and Dolphins before everyone else arrived - even saw Santa! Later, Mary, Leo, Sean and Shannon arrived and we later linked up with Trish, Terry, Megan & Erin; Ellen & David; and Tim, Elizabeth & Katie Belle. It was great having everyone together. Brenna, Sean, Mollie and I explored the Shark House and later visited the Penguin House. We stumbled on to Shamu's Happy Harbor (a big climbing house). Later headed over to see the Seal and Sea Lion show - where we met up with everyone else again. Brenna wanted to ride on some rides, so we looked for something good and found a rafting ride - we got wet!! Stopped for a bite to eat and ran into Ellen and David - Ellen took Brenna on some roller coasters. Later, Tiger, Colin and Keris came by and we ended up staying with them for a bit. Met up with the big group at 1400 - just in time for the Orca show (Shamu). Everyone really enjoyed that - especially Mollie (lots of dropped jaws). Split up again for a short time and explored some animal exhibits. Tried to see the "Polar Express" (in 4D) but the line was too long. Visited the Sea World character garden for photos and thought we would stay longer - but everyone else left. We ended up leaving around 1700 (a very nice day) and headed over to the famous Rudy's BBQ. It actually was an old gas station but serves great food (you sit outside on benches with big paper-towels spread on picnic tables). Everyone enjoyed it a lot. Needed some supplies, so checked out a base nearby (Nicky had an expired ID - but the guard "fixed" that problem by taking it...). We weren't in any hurry to get back to town because there was a boat parade (tickets required) and lots of traffic. Thought we would be OK with getting back after it started (that's what the concierge said...) but never accounted for the "gawkers" in their cars that wanted to watch the parade (couldn't actually do it...). Back at Bonnie's room again around 2000. Kids enjoyed the evening with their cousins and Nicky and I relaxed a bit... Bed pretty late - whew!

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 2

Got up around 0600 for some reason... Checked a little email and then took Brenna and Mollie down to the hotel breakfast buffet. Erin and Nicky decided to head out on the Riverwalk to explore. Chuck and Andy joined us for breakfast and we enjoyed a nice chat until around 1030. We looked around at the hotel (including the roof-top pool) and enjoyed the view of the Alamo - which is basically right across the street from the hotel. We went back to the room and I relaxed for awhile - the girls started getting ready and took nearly two hours... We met up with everyone at Bonnie's room and then walked down to the Thanksgiving dinner - set up in a special room. Nicky and I sat with the kids and everyone was pretty well behaved. Katie Belle was the center of attention for a lot of the meal but the kids ate good food and had Shirley Temples (sort of a tradition). After getting pretty full, we headed back up to Bonnie's room to rest and get ready for the next event - a tour of the river on a boat! We met up with everyone just in front of the hotel and all piled in (around 35 people) for a great experience. We learned a lot about San Antonio - including information about the rest of the old Spanish Missions (besides the Alamo). The weather cooperated and everyone was in very good spirits when it was over. Back in Bonnie's room, everyone grazed on leftovers from Thanksgiving dinner and other treats (pie, cheese & sausage, puffy popcorn). Brenna and I snuck out and walked around on the Riverwalk and up to the Alamo (lit up nicely). Decided to leave a little early tonight because we wanted the kids to get some sleep - tomorrow we've got Sea World!

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 1

I had a chance to leave work early today - didn't think that would work out... Got on the road towards San Antonio (this year's Thanksgiving location!) around 1300. Took I-820 around to I-20 and I-35W (less traffic). Doing OK until the I-35E & I-35W merge (whew!!!). Got moving again after about 45 minutes but then encountred construction all the way to Austin. Made it through the capital by 1730 - decided to stop for gas and dinner. We had Popeye's chicken - something we've done a few times on our trips (mmm...). Made it into San Antonio around 1830 - had some trouble finding the Hyatt Regency because of bad Mapquest directions (turn right onto ramp, proceed 100 yards and turn right on ramp - too bad this meant across five lanes of traffic!). Eventually got there and ran into David, Ellen, Kevin and Debra at the valet. Lots of hugs and tips on where everyone already was. Checked in and got settled - kids antsy... Luckily, they have their own room this time! Visited Bonnie's room for a short time and said hi to her and Kathy - they were leaving for dinner. Decided to take a stroll on the Riverwalk to find Tim, Elizabeth and Katie (Rainforest Cafe). Found them OK but there was no seating. Walked around for a little while longer until suddenly we heard a voice "Hi, Jimmy!" - it was Megan and Erin! We sat with Trish, Terry and the (grown up!) girls for about an hour at a nice restaurant called Las Canarias. The waiter brought us a nice desert and told us the name of the place came from settlers from the Canary Islands. We walked back with everyone to the hotel and spent awhile in Bonnie's room again - everyone else had arrived. It is always great to see the family and there is never enough time to visit... Went to bed around midnight.

Jacksonville, FL (USA)

Didn't get up early this early but still had plenty of time to (leisurely) check out of my room at the Hilton Garden Inn (Jacksonville / Orange Park) at 0830. Even had time to help Dave with some travel logistics and pick up Subway sandwiches for the road. After dropping off my Enterprise rental car at the NAS Jax Terminal, I met up with the rest of our Inspection Team.  We departed Jacksonville at 1200 - the flight went quickly and we arrived in Fort Worth by around 1400L. Before leaving Carswell (NAS JRB), I took care of some paperwork so I would be ahead of the game on Monday. Fortunately, the drive home was easy (no week-day traffic).  The kids were excited by the Jacksonville gifts - the twins can call it their "hometown" and always love hearing stories from there. Overall, a good trip!

Jacksonville, FL (USA)

This morning, I decided not to wait on everyone else and [(after breakfast)] left early the hotel early so I could meet up with Chris and Fernando. The result of this early start meant that I got the most work done today of all the days of the visit. While with 'Nando, ended up being invited to a "Thanksgiving" dinner. That was an unexpected surprise!  Before the day was over, I met several old friends who've really moved up in the world - that was good to see. Finally caught back up with everyone else at around 1600. Troy decided to make it a "hat trick" for the week and go to the Poker Room again.  Before I went out for the evening, I ate some of last night's leftovers. Next, I drove over to Mandarin to visit our family's old neighborhood.  Also explored a little nearby and picked up more Jaguar's stuff at the Mandarin Sports Mania store (they had an unbelievable selection!). Saw lots of changes in the area all night - amazing how much changes in a decade. Out of curiosity, I decided to check in on Troy at the Jacksonville Greyhound Racing track.  When I arrived (at around 2045), he had already dropped out of the tournament. Instead, I stayed to watch one dog race, just for fun. Filled up the gas tank of my rental car at the Exxon in Orange Park (2115) and then headed back to the Hilton Garden Inn (Jacksonville / Orange Park).  In my room again, I did some packing and wrapped up some web-site stuff. We leave tomorrow - it's been an interesting week...

Jacksonville, FL (USA)

Up early again [and ate breakfast at our hotel.]  I had to wait on Troy again (he needed a ride, actually)... Once at NAS Jacksonville, I got started with some more meetings and wrapped up a lot of important items. Had very little time for lunch and I spent it picking up some Jaguars gear for the kids. After that, I did a little more business but called it a day a bit earlier than yesterday (1500). Departing the base in my rental car, I attempted to do some snooping around for land/homes but got caught in a HUGE traffic jam. After the frustration reached a certain level, I gave up and headed back towards the Hilton Garden Inn (Jacksonville / Orange Park). In my room, I received several work-related calls - I was able to resolve them pretty easily.  Later, I drove to a nearby library to check some genealogy resources.  I was fortunately to find a few new thing!. I went back at the hotel (1800) and later met Russ (1900) to have dinner. Troy bailed on us again but our little group went to the Mandarin Ale House (an old haunt) to watch the Thursday Night Football game. While there, we had some good jambalaya (couldn't finish it!). The game was good and we watched the whole first half before heading back. Spent some time in the room catching up on email... Bed a little late.

Jacksonville, FL (USA)

After a good sleep in my room at the Hilton Garden Inn, I woke up early.  [Ate breakfast at the hotel.]  Even though I was ready to go, I spent a lot of time waiting for Troy... Once we got to the squadron spaces at NAS Jacksonville, I spent most of the day visiting some folks I've not met since I got to my new job. I also ran into lots of old friends.  It turned out that I was working in spaces that I used to be in when I was stationed here 10 years ago. What a blast from the past! Seems like people were mostly glad I came to town and I had a good lunch with David. Spent most of the afternoon poking around other offices before heading back to the hotel (arrived at around 1700). Troy decided to go out with some friends so I went to dinner with Dave at a nearby Thai restaurant. It turned out to be good food - no leftovers... Back to the hotel and bed early again.

Jacksonville, FL (USA)

[Inspection Trip] Had an opportunity to take a trip to Jacksonville with some co-workers. While there, I needed to do some networking with folks who work with me (virtually) from there. One of the nice things about this trip is it will be one of the first times I've been in Florida for any length of time since 2004. Our flight over went well and we arrived at around 1600. After picking up my rental car (Enterprise) at the NAS Jax Terminal (1630), I headed over to the Hilton Garden Inn (Jacksonville / Orange Park), arriving at 1720. Had some trouble getting my key but I eventually reached my room.  I was just going inside when a lady saw me in my uniform and asked if I could meet her son. It turned out he was a military veteran who was severely disabled in a motorcycle accident several years ago. It was good to be able to talk with them - his mother and aunt spoke glowingly of his service in the Army Rangers and he seemed genuinely glad to see me and to chat about the current state of the service... Spent a short time in the room, getting settled, before I met Troy and Russ for dinner. We decided to go to Sarnelli's, a nearby Italian restaurant that Nicky and I had frequented when we used to live here. The atmosphere was just as I remembered it - the place makes food as good as anything I've had in Sicily! The staff speaks Italian and they have beer, limoncello and other goodies from the old country. I had a delicious dinner of mahi-mahi (Caprese style) with shrimp (mmm...). A highlight of the evening was when our waitress made Russ a Caesar salad at our table - from scratch! After several hours (and quite a bill!), we went back to our hotel and I turned in early...

Pensacola, FL (USA)

Great weather for travelling today! Flying with Jason today - one of his first trips. Left on time and arrived shortly in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Never went there before - and it is the second trip in two months that took me just north of the Red River... Next stop was Columbia, South Carolina. On the way over, encountered some icing - it's already started! Flight from there down to Pensacola - weather even better there. Could see all of Fort Walton Beach down to Gulf Shores, Alabama. Wish I could have stayed for a little while, but had to leave quickly again. Stopped through Marietta, Georgia, for the first time in several years. Things had changed a lot - wish we still lived there, though. Got home just after the sun set - almost exactly on time!

Some Commentary...

I really didn't enjoy this trip. There was too much stress, constant (and some unnecessary) changes to the itinerary and people on their own plan while the rest of us waited for them. To top it off, the crew that "couldn't stop through Fort Worth" stopped instead in Kansas - probably about the time that I was getting on the flight out of Norfolk. Glad I had the chance to fly, but I miss the "normal" routines of previous flights: calm and predictable people; satisfying days of work (including the sense that I've gotten the job done as scheduled) and relaxing overnight stops. Hope I get to see that next time...

Brunswick, ME (USA)

Planning to leave at 1030L - more confusion, though. Actually had a chance to get some food and souvenirs at 0900L because there were some problems with our clearance (again). Carina stressed out about the way things have been going (everything via computers not working out the way she likes). However, this trip was completely different than what I've experienced over the last seven years - I used paper and face-to-face interactions with the locals to get things to work the way I wanted them to. This trip has been all about making changes with people who are located at computer hubs - we've never talked to them at all. I finally took it on my self to get our weather brief from the Portuguese forecaster at the airfield - that took 15 minutes and I was able to get away from Carina's worries... Still, we left late again. Flight over to Brunswick was OK - had to fly as efficiently as possible to make it without a fuel stop. Turn through there went good, too - it is a shame that they will soon close this field... While we were on the ground, found out that my trip back to Fort Worth with our aircraft had changed (again - aaaggghhh!!!). Instead of stopping for fuel there, the crew was going to try to fly all the way to San Diego. That meant that I was out of luck for getting home tonight. Eventually got some help from our travel office - they put me on a flight out of Norfolk that would depart soon after our landing in Virginia Beach. What it meant, though, was that I had to forego flying the last leg and instead had to re-pack for the flight. Bolted from the plane to the Norfolk airport as soon as we landed (1600) - and I barely made the 1815 departure... Final outcome was that I got back to DFW around 2030L (extremely worn out). Good to see the kids (made it in time for Halloween!). Home around 2200.

Terceira, Azores (Portugal)

Didn't have to leave until 1300L - so I slept in late and then had lunch. Got to the aircraft around noon and then learned that everyone was off on their own program again. Found out that all the (unnecessary) waffling about where we would be spending the night was all for naught - ended up that we were just going to the Azores as planned. Waited in the plane until 1400L and finally had everyone on the plane - feeling a little uncertain about everyone's intentions on this trip so far... Flew over to Rota -very nice weather. We were "racing" another aircraft and we almost caught them - but we had to slow down because the airport wasn't open until 1700L. Stop went OK in Spain, but I never had any time to shop or relax because I thought we were leaving right away (we weren't). Got out of there around 1830L and flew uneventful flight over to Lajes - arrived around 1900L. Checked into the hotel and then headed over to the bar - they were still serving dinner. Stayed for several hours and then headed back to my room. Caught up on some more work (email) and then went to bed.

Cairo (Egypt)

Left late from Sicily due to some clearance complications (mostly due to yesterday's re-route). We were supposed to spend the night in Crete tonight - changed back to Sicily... Flight over to Qatar went well - good weather and some great views of the Red Sea (we flew over near the Sinai peninsula this time!). I was amazed at the weather when we landed - it was breezy and a pleasant 25C. What struck me most, though, was that the sun was going down while we were fueling (at 1630L). We've figured out that the time zones are really screwed up right now - some people are moving their clocks off Daylight Savings and others aren't. Made for some interesting questions throughout the trip about what the local time was. Picked up a few old friends - they needed to go to Cairo to pick up another airplane. I'd been in the back for these first two legs, so I had a chance to look out the window for landmarks (i.e., Pyramids) - never saw anything, though. This was actually my first time in Egypt - if you don't count the Suez transits from 1997, 1998 and 1999. Weather good in Cairo too. Quick stop - no chance to enjoy any of the country (too bad)... I flew us back to Sicily - uneventful. Landed around 2300L and barely made it over to the bar for a drink before they closed. Checked up on my email and listened to Paul and Carina trying to change the route home (again!!!). Got back to the room around 0030 and watched some TV until 0200.

Shannon (Ireland)

Arrived to some low clouds and drizzle (windy, too!). Everything was closed in the terminal this time (duty free shop) - but turn was quick. We saw another plane from home - lucky bastards got to spend the night here! We took off around 0030L and flew over England, France and Italy on our way down to Sicily. Weather was nice - could see lots of landmarks. Arrived around 0330L. Got checked into our hotel and spent a little while with some old friends at a little pub that was still open. Got to sleep around 0500 and didn't wake up until 1100. Had some of my trip leftovers for lunch and intented to meet up with Paul and Carina around 1230 (for some shopping) - but neither showed. Went over to the aircraft to see if they were there and found Carina. Found out our itinerary was changed (again) and we had a lot of work to do to make that happen. Had a few minutes to visit Andy - works next door. Didn't end up going out until nearly 1600. We eventually had an opportunity to visit the Auchan for some local products. On the way back we stopped for dinner in Mota at the Dona Fortunata restaurant - always good. Walked down the street afterwards and found the (usual) gelato shop. Thought about getting some cookies from Carmelo the baker (see DEC 2008) - but his shop was gone. Back at the gelato shop, met a guy who knew the backstory on this. He pointed me towards another bakery and we headed over there for the delicious cookies the kids liked last time. Had an issue with getting some Euro - Paul bailed me out. Got a whole box of the individually wrapped cookies - some flavored with almonds, others with oranges (mmmm...). Back at home around 1000. Packed up and went to bed.

Gander, Newfoundland & Labrador (Canada)

Had trouble getting to work this morning (barely made it on time) - but everyone else did too. Ended up getting a late start - but not because of the efforts of Carina (a new person who is very intense and plans everything to exact specifications). Actually, it was due to a last minute change to our itinerary (Sicily vice Crete). Got airborne by 0930 - I was flying today. Flight up to Canada went well - weather was good enough to see New York City as we flew by. Stopped through Gander this time - turnaround went well and weather was very pleasant. Got flying again quickly and flew all the way to Ireland - with the time-zone changes, we were on final just before midnight...

Virginia Beach, VA (USA)

Had an early flight this morning - got a ride to the airport from guys at work (0700L). Made it through to the gate very quickly - so quickly that I had over two hours to kill. Spent most of it at the USO (very nice in DFW). Got on the aircraft on time but then sat for over 30 minutes (waiting on the pilot!). Eventually on our way - but I had read everything I brought already (very bored all the way...). In Norfolk (1445L) my bag was ready before I got to the baggage claim! Got another ride from folks at work and was able to get food for tomorrow as well as visit some old friends. Spent the rest of the afternoon watching football until Ken called. Went to dinner with him and his son, Jake - at Jake's BBQ in Virginia Beach. Back at the room around 2100 - finished rearranging my bags before bed.

Point Mugu, CA (USA)

Got packed to leave before 0900 and then heard that we had slid until at least 1030. Had time to pick up some snacks and a newspaper. We were waiting - for what seemed liked forever - for our Boss to be ready to go. Eventually, we got in the air (1130) - but the time zone change was a day-killer. Flight home was monotonous and long (but not as bad as the way West). Arrived at 1730 and couldn't wait to get off the plane... Beeline to the car, got gas and made it home before 1830. Trip was OK - first time on the Herc, first time at Point Mugu - met lots of nice people and saw some great things.

Malibu, CA (USA)

Another long day... Rob got us some special tacos (little, with spicy meat) for lunch so I could finish up the paperwork and final check-out. Our team was actually able to wrap everything up by 1700. Thought I would have a little more time this afternoon for souvenir hunting, but ended up barely getting on the road by 1800. I borrowed Keith's Prius this time (it is really a different kind of car to drive!). I've tried European and Japanese diesel cars with "credit-card" keys and push button starters - but this car even had a backup camera and the little shifter and "park" button made for an interesting time. I would bet that this car prevents drunk drivers from getting on the road... Eric came with me and we found ONE place that sold T-Shirts - after driving nearly all the way to Duke's again! Turned around by 1900 and drove back to Neptune's Net ("surf shack"). I had recognized this place yesterday - it has been in two movies that I remembered: "Point Break" and "The Fast and the Furious" (actually on TV last night!). We had a bit of sunset left -could still see lots of surfers... The temperatures had really dropped off by the time we got our food. The rest of the crew showed up about 30 minutes later. Everyone agreed that the ambiance was good. Back at the motel around 2130. Found out we wouldn't be leaving until at least 1000 tomorrow morning, so I skipped packing and went to bed.

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Malibu, CA (USA)

Worked nearly all day today - without lunch. Getting Rob up to speed on the process we use on these trips... Weather still great (15-25 C, sunny) over the course of the day. Around 1630, met up with Rob again and went down the PCH to see the sights of nearby Malibu. Took our time, stopping in some of the neighborhoods to check out houses for sale and the views (reminded me of the movie "Life as a House"). We drove around on the campus of Pepperdine University and saw some great views of the setting sun in the distance. Kept driving down the coast until we arrived at Duke's (name-sake of the bar in the Outrigger in Honolulu). They had $4 valet parking! Got a great seat on the water and saw the last evidence of the sunset. Atmosphere was similar to Hawaii, but there really isn't any substitute for the tropic breezes (even with the mai-tai)... Other guys arrived around 1930. I had the catch of the day, mahi-mahi, with parmagian and macadamia nuts (mmmm...). Drive home was really easy (no traffic) - made it back in short order. Spent a little time watching TV and then got to sleep.

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

Camarillo, CA (USA)

Up really early for work - got a lot done before 1130. Had lunch with guys from work and then finished up in the afternoon. Thought everyone would want to enjoy the great weather, but most of the other guys just wanted to take it easy... Borrowed one of the cars and drove around the area. Found some more great wildlife (seals, pelicans) and discovered that I was in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Even drove down to Mugu Rock (I heard it was broken off from the rest of the ridge when road crews blasted through for a re-route of the Pacific Coast Highway). Drove up to Port Hueneme and around the fields - saw lots of pickers coming out as the sun was going down (I guess there is still a lot of produce growing out there...). Eventually made it to CA-101 in Camarillo, where Keith said we should have dinner. Found Yolanda's pretty easily after first exploring the many outlet malls nearby... Arrived about 20 minutes before everyone else - early enough to really enjoy a 42-ounce margarita! Keith's parents - and the rest of the gang - arrived around 1900. We had a great time and didn't leave until nearly 2200. Too tired when we got back, so I went right to sleep...

Monday, October 5, 2009

Point Mugu, CA (USA)

Actually got out of Fort Worth before 0900 - and it was lucky, too - first flight on a Hercules... Took nearly five and a half hours to get to Point Mugu. I have been near this place before (see 1995 and 1996) but never stopped for any length of time. After the usual check-in process, we headed over to the Beach Motel. Eric had some errands to run, so I stayed in my room for a few hours (even took a nap!). Around 1800, walked down the beach to a mixer. On the way, saw lots of harbor seals resting in the tidal basin and found a monument to the Alaska Air Flight 261. I wrote one of my masters degree papers on that accident, so this was an interesting surprise. Enjoyed some good food and the Monday Night football game. Back at the room around 2200 - watched a little more of the game and then went to bed.

McKinney, TX (USA)

I'd heard about an Oktoberfest event on the north side of Dallas and, with the Twins off at a birthday party, I decided to head over for the day. Mollie actually came with me, which made it more fun. We had to drive over an hour on Farm-1171 until we came to TX-121 (nice toll road!). Made it there around 1000 - early enough to look around town before the Keg got tapped. Mollie and I talked with several people and learned that this was only the second annual event, but that it was already bigger than 2008. You had to pay to get in for beer - I think because public drinking is not allowed in town without joining a "club" (saw this in Fort Worth when we first moved here - see JUL 2008). We enjoyed some apple strudel and root beer and then watched the parade through town. Our kids have taken Irish dancing lessons - and I've heard of Greek dancing lessons - but I really didn't know that kids took German dancing lessons... They were part of the procession, along with half & half Texas and Bavarian flags and Polka band. At the rear was a Franconia Beer ("The Beer from Here") keg. After the Star Spangled Banner and Deutchland-uber-Alles (!), the Mayor ("Pro-temp") made several comments. This was followed by a boisterous keg tap - everyone made toasts and spirits were high. Had some good beer (a Dunkel and Oktoberfest) while the Alpine Village Band played great Polka songs. Mollie and I danced along with a big crowd to the Chicken Dance, Valderie Valdera, Beer Barrel Polka, etc. We explored later and found out there was a "weenie dog race." Mollie was getting tired by 1430 - and it had gotten up to 35C - so we left. Way home worked well along US-380 until we got to Denton. Traffic forced us onto some side roads and the next thing I knew we were in Flower Mound (NOT I-35W...). Found Farm-1171 and got home around 1600. Definitely a must-do for next year!

Colorado Springs, CO (USA)

Arrived early for another flight - knew it would be a LONG day! Actually got airborne early and had no problems getting to our first stop, Melbourne, Florida. Had some problems with fuel and the passengers, but got out of there close to the schedule. Weather was very nice in the area of the Space Coast - had great views of the beaches and Cape Canaveral. On our way to Colorado Springs next. Had to avoid some big thunderstorms by this point (~1200L) but made it through OK. Nice weather there, too, but windshear developing at the base of the mountains. Actually had a pretty quick stop. Wish we could have stayed, but we were still trying to stay on schedule... Next stop was Altus, Oklahoma. I had never been there before - was actually surprised there was anything in the area! Saw some big hills and good views of the Red River. Weather still good. On the way to San Antonio, we encountered the worst thunderstorms yet - but were able to avoid them all the way until just before landing. Rain and runway construction made this stop more challenging... On our way again just after sunset - dodging same weather all the way. Arrived to a pleasant evening in Fort Worth - what a relief. One of my guys came up and reported we landed "exactly on schedule" - it took a lot of work to make it happen! Lots of paperwork before I could go home. VERY tired...

Corpus Christi, TX (USA)

Planned for a pretty short day - with stops at Millington, Tennessee, and Corpus Christi. When I arrived at 0700, found out we would be delayed until noon (broken plane). Got some work done while I waited, but I was a little disappointed that we had to wait so long to go. Eventually got airborne and had a relatively easy trip over to Millington (the old NAS Memphis). Weather was getting to be a concern by this point, with lots of thunderstorms between Memphis and Corpus. Still, we managed to avoid nearly everything and arrived to some beautiful views of the Texas beaches. They apparently had a huge storm this morning, but that cooled things off a little. Had some aircraft problems, but eventually got in the air again by 1700. Dodged storms all the way home and landed in a downpour back in Fort Worth. With the storms and maintenance delays, the day turned out to be a lot of work - felt pretty drained on the drive home...

Norfolk, VA (USA)

This was not a good day for airline transportation... Woke up around 0800, did some work, packed up, checked out of the Navy Gateway Inn (1030), got gas at the on-base gas station (1045) and left Dam Neck Annex. Got a late breakfast/lunch before heading to the airport.  Returned my rental car to the Enterprise desk (1120)  Wanted to ensure I got a seat assignment, so I checked in early with American Airlines. Spent several hours playing on my computer before they boarded us at 1400 (almost on time). Unfortunately, we then spent several MORE hours waiting on the ramp for a series of thunderstorms to pass. Ultimately, the pilot decided to take us back to the terminal so he could get more fuel - that took another hour. In the meantime, however, we got to get off the plane and run through the rain back to the terminal (they wouldn't bring the jetway over...). Managed to pick up some food, though... Eventually, we got back on the plane and were able to depart (around three hours late) for Texas. Met some nice people in the meantime - had good chat all the way home. Arrived at DFW at around 1930L (still three hours behind schedule) and Nicky picked me up. Home around 2030 - whew!!!

Norfolk, VA (USA)

Second day of conference/workshop.  Same slog/commute from Dam Neck Annex to NOB Norfolk  Finished earlier this time, gave me a chance to wrap up some discussions with people who had asked for networking time. Had lunch at Club again - then headed back to the Navy Gateway Inn at Dam Neck. Made a few efforts to try to connect with Tom or Ken - no luck. Took a nap, actually... Rain hit us around 1800, so didn't leave the hotel at all and skipped dinner. Got a lot of internet stuff done (bills, etc.). Before bed, I packed for my departure tomorrow...

Norfolk, VA (USA)

Woke up early for my drive over to Norfolk. Hadn't done it in a while, so had to make sure I didn't get stuck in a big traffic jam on the way. Consequently, arrived at work around 45 minutes early. Met with some folks before our conference began at 0800. Great interaction - very worthwhile workshop with some good networking. Even ran into my old friend, Steve, who I haven't really seen since around 1999. Had lunch at the Club with him (also ran into John - another co-worker from the past). Finished up around 1530 - got some additional email work done before heading back. It is always great to hit the HOV lane before 1600... Called my friend Megan - we had talked last week about the chance to get together - and she told me to join her and her husband, Kevin, at the house for dinner. Spent the rest of the afternoon and evening chatting and watching Kevin work on his Harley. Very enjoyable time. Luckily, too, they live very close to the Dam Neck Annex. Back at the Navy Gateway Inn, went to bed at the usual time.  Sadly, this trip is almost over...

Mayport, FL (USA)

Breakfast early again - then got a quick flight from Virginia Beach down to Mayport (near Jacksonville) and back. Flew with Jason again - had great weather and the turn was good. Arrived back in VA around 1230. Planned to get together with Tom, but it didn't work out. That's OK, since I have some important work during the remaining days of the trip and I got some prep done tonight. Had dinner near the Dam Neck Annex - it was pretty good, actually. Back in my room at the Navy Gateway Inn, I watched TV and then went to bed.

Virginia Beach, VA (USA)

Had another flight today - more local area work. Tested out the new equipment at Patrick Henry (Williamsburg) Airport and then headed home. Lunch at the Golf Club again. More work at the office afterwards - then back to the hotel to change. Picked up some dinner at McDonalds on the way over to my old neighborhood. Got to visit with Floyd and Yvonne - always nice - and meet the folks who live in our old house. Back at the Dam Neck Annex (Navy Gateway Inn), did some laundry and followed up on some work leads. Bed early.

Norfolk, VA (USA)

Woke up early to try to make some work connections in Norfolk. Visited two of the main offices that call me nearly every day when I am at my job. Good networking (and a better idea of where/who I deal with). Had a big lunch at the Club and got some work done in the afternoon. A little tired, so I didn't do anything exciting tonight - just had some ice cream near the beach. Found out late that I got a flight for tomorrow - jazzed about that. Back at the Dam Neck Annex Navy Gateway Inn, I went to bed earlier than usual.

Sunday, August 16, 2009

Jennersville, PA (USA)

Woke up around 0700, packed up, checked out of the NAS JRB Willow Grove Navy Lodge and headed out to see a genealogy friend, Elizabeth H. Took I-276/I-476 down to US-1 and then drove through the scenic hills toward the Brandywine Valley. We were in this area last summer (see AUG 2008) but we never went on this route. I didn't realize how much was on US-1... We had planned to meet at the Brandywine Battlefield (US Revolution) but when we both got there it was closed (for the season - or for lack of funds?). Drove with her over to her friend's farm in rural Chester County. Very pretty! Spent several hours doing genealogy with her - made some good discoveries. It was too bad that it had to end, but I got back in the car for my drive home around 1600. Had several messages when I got back into cell-phone service range - my flight tomorrow was (1) changed; (2) changed again and (3) cancelled altogether... To bad - I was looking forward to another trip. Decided to keep going, though, and just made an adjustment to my route. Instead of the usual way (through Delaware), used back roads (PA-896, MD-213, US-301 and US-50) along the Eastern Maryland shore of the Chesapeake. Stumbled across the birthplace of Thomas McKean (signer of the Declaration of Independence) close to the MD-PA border. Weather was much improved since I came up on Thursday - explored some towns along the coast, including Cambridge. Ate dinner at a place in town called Portside Seafood Restaurant - had "crab imperial" (Chesapeake Blue Crab with shrimp and a tasty sauce). Watched sun set over the Chesapeake - very pretty. Back on US-50 (driving towards Ocean City), I found Harriet Tubman home. [I got gas at Exxon in Cambridge, MD (1920).]  The rest of journey was dark with lots of traffic until I hit the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (paid my toll at 2140). By the time I was back in Virginia Beach, it was nearly 2300. I drove back to Dam Neck Annex and checked into the Navy Gateway Inn again.  No flight tomorrow, though, so it all worked out. Tired from the drive, but really enjoyed the scenic route...

Doylestown, PA (USA)

Arrived at work around 0645 - just in time to find out that we needed to get in the air before 0800 and back before 1000. Lucky this was a pretty easy evolution... Kevin had done several of these system checks before, so I just had to assist. Weather not great, but improving. Spent around an our in the approach pattern at Harrisburg - always good views of the river winding through the hills. Back with about three minutes to spare! Hurried back to the hotel to change into my "outfit" for Scott's ceremony (another reason for this trip). Probably the hottest day of the trip so far (still cooler than Texas, though!!!). Ceremony was shortest I've ever seen (29 minutes!) and everyone very happy. Had time for snacks and a stop at the Club. Started getting calls from the guys in Virginia Beach that they needed me to come back to fly... Agreed to help on Monday. Also made arrangements with my friend, Elizabeth, to get together in Chester County tomorrow. Headed over to Scott's house (Doylestown) for a party around 1900. Spent several hours chatting and congratulating him and his family - also saw a lot of old friends. No problem getting back to NAS JRB Willow Grove. Arrived at the Navy Lodge only to learn that Kevin had problems when he tried to leave with the plane we flew this morning. Went to bed with thoughts of my drive back to Virginia on my mind...

Waukegan, IL (USA)

Up early - had a 0900 takeoff. Good to see everyone, especially one of my old bosses, Rob. Had some delays for aircraft repair, but only left about 45 minutes late. Flight down to New Orleans was pretty uneventful (except for a degraded auto-pilot). Saw some huge thunderstorms along the Florida Pan-handle, but they didn't affect us. Good turn in hot/humid Louisiana (glad to be on our way...). Flight up to Chicago area also pretty easy. Came in from west side of city and actually flew near Milwaukee before landing in Waukegan. Hadn't been here for nearly a decade... Flight home took us along Lake Erie. Significant weather near Philadelphia, so we had to descend very early. Rob (who grew up around here) gave us a little tour of the landmarks. Got back to NAS JRB Willow Grove by close to the expected arrival time. Finished all paperwork and was planning to call it a day when I ran into Kevin. He needed someone to fly with him early on Saturday, so I agreed to help. Then headed back to Navy Lodge to get "outfit" ready for tomorrow's festivities. Had leftovers for dinner (still tasty!). Watched TV and did laundry - then Bed.

Dover, DE (USA)

Was planning to stay in Norfolk for a bit longer and ate a late breakfast (more like an early lunch ?).  Suddenly, though, I got a call that I could fly out of Willow Grove the following day!  Immediately, I checked out of the Navy Gateway Inn and left the Dam Neck Annex (at around 1015). Decided to take Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (shorter distance, more scenic) and paid my toll at 1100. Still pouring for most of the day - started to clear around Wallops Island. [Got gas at Exxon station in Ellendale, DE (1355).] Decided to take US-113 (vice the usual US-13). Construction going on there, but promises for a four lane drive in that direction in the future... Hit DE-1 earlier than usual - lots of traffic (from the shore?). Still made pretty good time until reaching I-95 - then barely missed several huge accidents and traffic jammed up really bad. Thought I was doing a good thing to get off at I-476, but (as usual) it was still stop & go all the way to Willow Grove (arrived 1630). This may have been the longest it has ever taken me between Norfolk and Philly (should have left earlier)... Checked back into the Navy Lodge at NAS JRB Willow Grove and still had time to do some planning for the flight and pick up some supplies for my visit. Went out for dinner at the nearby Gramma's Grotto (Italian) restaurant - ordered a Philly Cheesesteak pizza (mmm...). Ended up with some leftovers (for a couple days' work of lunch/dinner). Back in my room, I went to bed pretty early...

Virginia Beach, VA (USA)

One of the main reasons for this trip was to get a flight that I need to complete every year.  Fortunately, I got the opportunity this morning to fly with by buddy, Ken, and he made that happen. Weather was awesome - could see the entire Chesapeake from the air and had no trouble with getting all requirements completed. Went to lunch at the Golf Club and then finished up some other work (had to make sure all paperwork was properly noted before I leave for Fort Worth...). Had a drink with old friends later (1530) and made some plans to go to the Norfolk Tides game with them. Around 1830 (the time suggested to get together) the sky opened and rain began to flood the streets! I was already driving towards Norfolk but thought better of it and stopped instead in my old neighborhood for visits with old neighbors (not home...). Had dinner at Quiznos and then headed back to the Dam Neck Annex (Navy Gateway Inn). Packed for my departure tomorrow before going to bed.

Virginia Beach, VA (USA)

Got up later today. Got a haircut and had lunch before heading back to work. Spent several hours with paperwork and preparation for tomorrow's flight. Ran into my old buddy, Jack, who asked me over to dinner at his place. Our families were pretty close when we lived here, so it was cool to have the opportunity to get together. Arrived there around 1700 and spent the next several hours chatting - actually lost track of the time (we were having so much fun). Drove back to Dam Neck Annex (Navy Gateway Inn) at around 2300 - then went to bed.

Quonset Point, RI (USA)

Woke up early so I wouldn't miss my flight to Norfolk. Checked out of the Navy Lodge at NAS Willow Grove and headed to the flight line.  Great weather this morning - it was absolutely wonderful to get away from Fort Worth temps... After departing the Philadelphia area, we had to fly through Quonset State Airport (near Providence, RI) on the way to Virginia Beach. Got some good views of Jersey Shore, NYC and Long Island on the way up and then enjoyed the beautiful scenery of Narraganset Bay. Arrived in Virginia around 1130.  Once out of the aircraft, I found that I had several messages that had to be attended to, so spent several hours "putting out fires." Saw lots of familiar faces while I worked in my old office. Got a ride to the airport to pick up my rental car (from Enterprise).  By 1235, I was headed over to my favorite hotel on the beach (Dam Neck Annex Navy Gateway Inn). After getting settled in my room, I picked up some dinner nearby. Met a nice lady who was also on travel here who had some great insights on school age kids (she's a teacher) and told me about some great places to visit if we get back to Seattle (where she lives). Back at the hotel, changed into beachwear and spent over an hour walking along the shore. Sunset spectacular (as usual) and peaceful waves with gulls and sandpipers very relaxing. Forgot how much I miss the ocean in Fort Worth... Watched some TV and made some plans for next day, then bed.

Willow Grove, PA (USA)

Got to fly up to Willow Grove this morning to drop off a plane. Nicky took me to NAS JRB Fort Worth at 0700 - just in time to find that someone had slid our departure time until the afternoon... Remedied that with some phone calls and then got on our way. Weather was great until just before we landed at NAS Willow Grove - by then, we had thunderstorms and low visibility. From the flight line, I got a ride over to the Navy Lodge and spent a few hours getting ready for the next few days (paperwork). After picking up some supplies for tomorrow, I borrowed a car from the Squadron Duty Office and headed over to Lee's Hoagies. Had a great cheesesteak for dinner and watched some TV. Bed relatively early...

Whidbey Island, WA (USA)

Actually got the family out of the hotel before 0700 - a miracle! Everyone very tired... Had no trouble getting back to the Island - no traffic. Weather much colder than it has been this week (around 15 C) - lots of fog. Driving across Deception Pass bridge a little disconcerting with no visibility. Checked in with plenty of time and got off the ground around 1000. Kids had a great time watching out the window for spectacular views of Mount Rainier and the Seattle skyline. Flight about three and a half hours to Fort Worth. Arrived to nearly 40 degrees C again - and very humid! No problems getting home - around 1700. Poll of kids indicated that this was one of our best trips. Mount Rainier ranked high and visiting with relatives was also popular. Erin especially enjoyed the bustle of Pike Place Market. Lots of talk about returning next year...

Top Ten Reasons Why Seattle is a Fun City!

By Brenna, Erin and Mollie:

#10 - Pike's Place Market - fun to watch people throw fish, look at the beautiful flowers and do some shopping. They have Rainier cherries!

#9 - Space Needle - you can see the whole city and waterfront from the top!

#8 - Bridge Troll - there is a HUGE statue of a troll who lives under a bridge. He is holding a real VW Bug in his hand!

#7 - Statues at the Bus Stop - there are bronze statues of people waiting for a bus. You can change their clothes - it was funny!

#6 - Lakes - they (Lake Union and Lake Washington) are all very beautiful and clean for swimming and boating. We even saw airplanes landing and taking off in the water!

#5 - Monorail - it gets you around the city and you get really good views!

#4 - Mount Rainier - it is close to Seattle, it always has snow and we saw pretty wildflowers there!

#3 - Grove of the Patriarchs - had really big trees - some 1000 years old! They looked like they were as tall as the Space Needle!

#2 - Family - we got to visit with Ms. Lenora, Ms. Courtenay, Holly and Finnian. It was great to spend time with them!

And, the #1 reason why Seattle is a Fun City:

Nature - it is close to the ocean and it has lots of (a) beautiful trees and lakes; (b) mountains and islands; and (c) FRESH AIR!

Note - for more information about Seattle, Mollie recommends that you read the book "Larry Gets Lost in Seattle"

Mount Rainier, WA (USA)

Woke up early again - a little more difficult this time (kids getting a little cranky). Made it out of the city before 0800. Headed over Lake Washington to I-405 and then down to WA-169. Found the rural areas quickly - got some breakfast and sandwiches (for later) in Maple Valley). Later, on WA-410, saw some awesome views of Mount Rainier. It was clear immediately that this was a great idea - weather beautiful and visibility great. Made it into White River area by 0945 - just in time for a Junior Ranger campfire program. Kids enjoyed meeting other kids - from around the country - who were also interested in learning about the National Parks and animals. Spent more time in the Sunrise area - hiking along a beautiful trail with wildflowers and views of the glaciers on the mountain. Mollie especially enjoyed using the wildflower guide provided by the rangers. Kids "sworn-in" as Junior Rangers in a big presentation at the Visitor Center (along with some other kids - from New Hampshire - who were on their eighth Junior Ranger of their three week vacation). Drove down towards the South Entrance - we were fortunate that they opened the WA-706 road TODAY! I guess we would have been out of luck otherwise... Highlight of the day was the visit to the Grove of the Patriarchs - a stand of 1000 year old cedars. Also got to cross river on a rickety suspension bridge... Checked out Paradise area - VERY busy but saw even prettier views of the mountain from that side. Exited the park around 1600 and headed back towards Tacoma. Our plan was to meet up with Courtenay (Pat and Mike's daughter) and her kids for dinner at their swim club on Lake Washington - made it by 1830. Our kids were fast friends with Holly and Finn - they all enjoyed the entire evening swimming and diving. Courtenay set up a great spread with burgers, dogs and lots of great Northwest fruit. Back at Courtenay's home, kids spent a few more hours playing - didn't want the visit (or the trip) to end... I had to end it, finally, because I found out we had to leave by 1000 tomorrow (with a two hour drive back to Whidbey...). Back at the hotel, easy to get everyone to sleep...

I Like to Roam (By Brenna)

I like to roam.
It feels like the

Everyone is nice.
Everywhere I go I

of that part of the world.

Seattle, WA (USA)

Kids don't seem to be tiring yet... Woke up early again and headed over to Seattle Center on the monorail (0910) - this was another hit. Weather yesterday was hot (40+ C) but better this morning. Arrived in time (0930) to get up to the top of the Space Needle with small crowds. Kids enjoyed the cameras that could be manipulated to explore the skyline. Mollie a little afraid of the glass balconies/heights, so she and I stayed inside while Nicky and the twins explored the entire place. Extra bonus was a "flyby" by the Navy's Blue Angels (part of the Sea Fair Festival) - they went right by the Needle while we were up there! After our fill of Seattle skyline scenery, enjoyed a quick lunch at a nearby restaurant. Walked around the entire park, watching kids playing in a huge fountain, visiting a northwest art gallery and eating cracker-jacks and cotton candy. The park was very nice - we didn't do the museums because we were having such a nice time in such a green, safe place. Got some great souvenirs. Walked over to the Library so everyone could see the building and the kids' section (spent about an hour there). Later headed back to the Pike Place Market and bought some flowers and some other nick-nacks. Had arranged to meet up with Joanie's mother, Lenora (we met her in Fort Worth last fall) around1630 and drove the car there with no problem. She lives in an apartment overlooking Lake Union - very pretty. Spent several hours with her, talking about her lifetime in Seattle and the other relatives that lived here since the early Twentieth Century after they moved from Iowa. The kids and I walked down a hillside stair to the waterfront and picked up some dinner - which we enjoyed on Lenora's balcony. When we left her home, everyone was in good spirits. Decided to visit Discovery Park to watch the sun set. On the way, stumbled across two more sites from the "Larry Gets Lost in Seattle Book": the troll under the WA-99 bridge and the statue of the people waiting for the bus (more photo opportunities). Checked out University of Washington campus before heading back to the waterfront. Found Discovery Park - but because the visitor center was closed, didn't have a map of the trails or where the best place to see the sunset was. We walked around for about an hour - pleasant for most of it, but only saw the sun setting over the Olympic Mountains after we made several failed attempts to get to the beach (LOTS of walking!!!). I still think it was worth the effort... Later drove along the nearby locks connecting Elliot Bay with Lake Union. Back at the hotel before 2200. Nicky and I went to the restaurant downstairs (Elephant and Castle - see JAN 2008) for a nightcap. Bed around 2330.

Seattle, WA (USA)

Kids awake rather early - ready to leave for the first adventure of the trip. Decided to take the light rail from Westlake to Pioneer Square. That was pretty fun to travel on the clean train (and we were lucky to have the opportunity - it only opened at the beginning of the summer). When we arrived in the Pioneer Square area, it was pretty quiet (nice!). We stumbled across a small fountain nestled in the old brick homes - very pretty. Turns out it was the location where UPS started... We then walked over to the Klondike National Park site so the kids could learn about the Gold Rush of the late Nineteenth Century. Movies and displays were brand new and very interesting - kids even got to pan for gold! The Junior Ranger experience was a little more difficult than usual but they finished it. Unfortunately, the park rangers didn't have any pins available (but promised to get some by the end of the day). It was approaching lunch time, so we walked a short distance over to Chinatown and found a little place to eat there. The nice hostess (who had a kid sitting nearby waiting while Mom worked) set us up with some great (authentic) Asian dishes. The kids always enjoy the culture of the visits to this type of place... Walked around a little after lunch, enjoying some music in a nearby park and exploring the many souvenir shops. We had a chance to walk through a Japanese supermarket - just like the ones I've seen when I travel to Japan (see APR 2008). Great fresh food and lots of other trinkets ("Hello Kitty", etc.)! Even looked in an Asian furniture store - very exotic art, dressers and wall-hangings... Later walked back towards Pioneer Square and stumbled across the crowd for the afternoon Seattle Mariners game. We were actually able to walk right up to see the place where the Seahawks play and then followed people down towards the baseball stadium - enjoying glimpses of the scalpers, vendors and "bike-rickshaw" drivers. Stopped for a rest at Caffe Umbria and had gelato while we sat under shady trees. Got the kids their Junior Ranger pins then we headed back towards the train station. Found some totem poles in a pretty square (took funny photos) and then went back to Westlake Mall. Getting tired... Dropped Nicky and Erin off for some shopping across from the Red Lion and took Brenna and Mollie to the Library (with the cool glass ceilings and gradual stack descent - see JAN 2008). Found out that the kids' section was as big as our library in Fort Worth... Moved the car to a new parking garage and then we all met at Pike Place Market. Probably should have arrived a little earlier, since the vendors were beginning to close up shop. Still got to see some fish flying in the air, though (great hit!). Bought some Rainier Cherries (first time for that - mmmm...). Explored the several floors of the market to see what we might want to buy later. Went back to the hotel around 1800 and decided to check out the Happy Hour on the terrace. Kids enjoying the ambiance and views. Back to the room around 2000 - very tired... No problem getting everyone to sleep!

Whidbey Island, WA (USA)

Didn't have to be at the airport too early - just by 1200 to catch a lucky flight to the Pacific Northwest (one of the benefits of my job). After we got on the plane, it only took about four hours to get to Whidbey Island. The kids were excited and didn't even play with their Nintendo DS on the way - they just looked outside the aircraft. I've been up here before - but never with the family. Our car was waiting and we headed off immediately towards Seattle. Weather was unpleasantly hot (nearly 40 degrees C - thought we could leave that behind in Texas!). Stopped off at Deception Pass on the way - kids enjoyed a "nature hike" through the cedar forest and along the beach. Spent a little time there and enjoyed the "minty fresh" smell (as Mollie called it) of the of the evergreens... We arrived in Seattle after a drive on WA-20 and I-5 - our hotel was the Red Lion on Fifth Avenue (see JAN 2008). Kids excited to be in the city - lots to see and people to watch. Had enough time to walk down to the Waterfront - near the aquarium. Kids rode the carousel there and we had a little to eat as the sun set in the distance. Great views of Olympic Mountains and Elliot Bay. As we walked back up the hill towards our hotel, Mollie spotted the "Hammer Man" near the Art Museum and mentioned a book I had bought her on a previous visit (called "Larry Gets Lost in Seattle" - about a dog who visits all the sights in the city, including the tall black statue that rings in each hour with a hammer ring). I didn't think that she would remember something like that, but it was funny... Kids didn't want to go to bed, but reminded them about the two hour time difference and they went to bed, looking forward to tomorrow.

Fort Davis, TX (USA)

Wanted to sleep a little later today, but it was kind of hard with the sun creeping through the windows and the many wild birds chirping outside. Still, the kids were content after a night in a bunk bed and the opportunity to eat breakfast with the other kids in the camp cafeteria. I spent a lot of the morning speaking with the proprietors to learn about the possibility of the kids attending horse camp. Around 1000 we drove into town again - this time to visit the Fort Davis National Park. It was a startlingly beautiful place - site of a Buffalo Soldiers' outpost in the late Nineteenth Century. Camp homes were restored and rangers/volunteers were dressed in period clothing. The kids completed another Junior Ranger patch/pin - and learned a lot about life in the 1800s (including the "boring" time the kids had going to school and doing chores all day in this remote location). Still, no one wanted to leave the mountains - it is so pleasant and remote! We had lunch at the old Fort Davis Drug Store (cafe) - kids enjoyed the experience of eating at an old road-side stop. Drove out on TX-17 through some green canyons - took I-10 for a short time and then drove up to Pecos. Back on I-20, quickly made it back to Abilene. Amazingly, over the 14 hours of driving on this trip, the kids never watched a movie - we just chatted and enjoyed each others' company... Dinner in Weatherford and then home - just after 2030. Despite the many hours of driving, still feel pretty jazzed about what we saw. The Davis Mountains have lots of opportunities for the future!

Fort Davis, TX (USA)

We've been suffering under 40C weather for about a week (with no end in sight), so we decided yesterday to get away from it - to the mountains! Started around 0800 and headed out on I-20 to the West (later changed to I-10 and TX-118). Not a bad drive (seven hours) with zero traffic and speed limit west of Odessa as high as 80 mph! Haven't been to this area of Texas since SEP 1993... Amazingly, everyone was still in good spirits when we arrived at the McDonald Observatory in the Davis Mountains (around 1500). We had just missed the last telescope tour, but we found some other things of interest - interactive exhibits and beautiful views of the incredibly green surroundings. Elevation was nearly 7000' above sea level - and temps were just over 30C (nice!!). Bought our tickets for the later shows and then headed towards Fort Davis (about 15 miles south). Just before the "city" limits, found the Prude Ranch - a ranch guest house. Had made reservations and found it was truly worth it! The kids had fun learning about the summer camp they run there - maybe we can do it for them in the future. Later, we drove into Fort Davis and had dinner at the Hotel Limpia restaurant. Everyone tried a delicious Texas-style meal (including catfish, BBQ, chicken fried steak, cheesy mashed potatoes, etc.). Headed back up to the Observatory at 2000 - for the "Twilight Show." The kids learned all about the job of the astronomers on the mountain and got to act out the path of planets and stars in an open-air ampitheatre. As the sun set over distant mountains, the next phase of the show ("Star Party") began. With a nifty green LASER pointer, another Observer employee pointed out the major constellations of the summer sky. We got to see planets, satellites, "milky weigh," nebulae (etc.). There were so many stars! Even when we've been to remote locations to look in the sky before (see AUG 2007), we've never seen so many! Later in the evening, we got to look through telescopes - at Saturn (looked like an olive with a toothpick through it), a globular cluster, the swan nebula and a dead star (looked like a blue cheerio, according to the kids). We left around 2300 - tired but excited by the things we had seen. Back at the Prude Ranch, we went straight to bed (with no TV, no telephone in the room and non-existant cell service it was very easy to fall asleep!).

Euless, TX (USA)

[trip with the kids to Incredible Pizza, an indoor entertainment venue (kind of like Dave and Buster's) - lots of games and good food - made us forget about the heat outside...]

Virginia Beach, VA (USA)

Slept in a little bit - then got some more work done. Checked out of the hotel at the last possible minute, then had some lunch nearby. Drove over to Town Center and got internet connection at the Central Library. Around 1500, headed to the airport. No problems with turning in the car or getting a seat on this plane. Had dinner at Pizzaria Uno. Met one of my former co-workers (Rich) in the waiting area - he was headed back to Fort Worth to visit family. This made the time go quickly. Boarded the aircraft on time and had a good flight back to DFW. It took over an hour to get my bag and get back to my car - but there was no traffic on the way home. Frosty glad to see me! Bed early (time zone zombie again...).

Gloucester Point, VA (USA)

Slept in a little this morning. Had breakfast at the hotel and then checked out. Headed back to VA Beach via MD-5 and US-301. Crossed Potomac River near Dahlgren and then took VA-3 down towards George Washington's birthplace. I've always wanted to visit Stratford Hall, the home of the Lee family, but I never had the chance until today. Arrived just in time (1200) for a tour of the old home (built in 1738). Weather was very pleasant and there weren't many people around. Spent several hours after tour exploring the grounds - lots of history! Finally got back on the road and headed towards Yorktown on VA-3. By this point, I started to hear about huge backups on the HRBT, so I didn't rush. Stopped for an early dinner at Gloucester Point - at River's Inn at the marina. It's funny what seems familiar when you look around in places you've been: I think I went to the same place when I lived here back in 1991... Had snow crab and shrimp - all while enjoying the pleasant weather along the York River. Got on the road again around 1830 - bridge traffic was still heavy, but bearable. Made it to Virginia Beach and my hotel around 2000. Spent a few hours on work email again and went to bed.

Alexandria, VA (USA)

Woke up at 0500 and got checked out quickly. On I-264 by 0545 - not much traffic. Made it across the HRBT easily and took I-64 all the way to I-295 and I-95. Switched to VA-207 and then to US-301. Actually, this was a much better way to go than US-17... Stumbled across the site where John Wilkes Booth was killed (very close to intersection of US-301 and US-17 - Fort A. P. Hill). Didn't have time to explore... Finished trip on MD-5. As I was getting to Camp Springs, I started getting lots of work related calls - fortunately from the people in the area! Spent the whole day with four different outfits - first time I've met several of these folks. Had time for lunch at Jiffy's again (mmm - gyro!). Finished with everyone by 1600 and then spent a few hours trying to get checked into a hotel. Ended up at Colony South again. Got in touch with Bob and, after he finished golfing, we met for dinner at the Kingstowne Mall (had to drive over on I-495 and the Wilson Bridge - much easier now that the new bridge is completed...). We saw "Terminator: Salvation" (so-so). Afterwards, had dinner at a nearby Thai place and caught up with recent events. Left for the hotel around 2200. Bed around 2300 - whew!

Flint, MI (USA)

Today was a very busy day! Woke up very early and had some breakfast to go at Hardees. Arrived at work pretty early, too. Had some problems getting going, but we made it airborne on time. First trip up to Camp Springs was pretty easy - we got stuck there for a little while, though (it's always like that). Flight up to Quonset Point was unventful (thought there would be more weather...) - turnaround was good. Then flew down to Harrisburg - at only 16,000 feet (lower than normal). Weather and scenery there were tremendous! On our way down to North Carolina next - flight was good. Last part of trip was to fly up to Flint, Michigan. I haven't been there for years - and today was a great day to go! On the way, our routing took us over Lake Erie and part of Ontario - it was all very beautiful from the air. Flight home was more of the same - I miss flying! Got back around 1930 and finished all the paperwork by 2100. Had some Dairy Queen on the way back to the hotel. Stayed up late packing and getting ready for tomorrow's busy schedule...

Virginia Beach, VA (USA)

Woke up early and did some more internet work. Had an early lunch and then drove over to work. Had no trouble getting things started, since Jason had done most of the work already. Talked with some old friends & co-workers. Finished around 1430 and then drove over to visit with Floyd and Yvonne for a few hours. It seems like only yesterday that we left the neighborhood - but we miss them. Ended up having dinner at KFC - to try their new grilled chicken. Line was long, wait was excessive and chicken was kind of bland and dry. I think I like the classic better... Picked up some food for tomorrow (at WaWa - I miss that too). Went back to the hotel and walked on the beach for the next few hours. Waves were HUGE today (bigger than I remember) and the water was swamping everything high on the beach. Met some nice people and chatted with them until the sun went down. Packed for my trip and then went to bed early.

Virginia Beach, VA (USA)

Didn't have to leave early - but I'm glad I left the house early enough to have time for the traffic jam on I-820 (should know better by now...). Checked out the express parking this time - economy lot was full - and it worked out OK. Made it to the check-in counter just in time (flight overbooked) but didn't get my seat assignment until about five minutes before boarding started. Flight OK (more room than usual in exit row!). Huge line at rental car check-in (found out I needed to join their Preferred Customer program to avoid waiting - that should help next time). Got my car and took care of the normal "admin" before getting to my room on the beach. Got in touch with Ken - he was in town - and decided to meet him at Town Center for dinner. We ended up at the Red Star Tavern and chatted for several hours while we ate - lots of things have happened since I left here later summer! When we were leaving, I forgot my cell phone inside (lucky I knew where it was - they found it quickly...). Back at hotel, checked on some work emails - then bed.

San Diego, CA (USA)

John woke me up promptly at 0445 for our 0500 drive back to San Diego. I guess it is a good thing that I'm on another time zone... Got to the Glorietta Bay Inn at around 0615 and had some breakfast while I waited for the other guys to show up. We all drove over to the airplane at around 0745 and the guys got started on the brake (parts arrived!). While waiting, I went over to meet up with Wade but learned that he was actually at the doctor's office.  Instead, I ended up visiting Don, Lawrence and Brian. Spent two hours chatting about work-related items and touring the area. I've talked to them many times by phone, but it was nice to see things in person! Drove over to the airport at 1000 to try to pick up Pete (flying in this morning from Fort Worth) - but he hadn't yet made it. His new arrival time (1300) gave me time to head back to check everyone out of the hotel. Also had time to visit with Kevin and Wade - we even had lunch. I really felt good about what I accomplished on this unscheduled trip - saw just about everyone I work with via cyberspace! And - bonus - when I got back to the plane it was fixed! Got ready to leave - all the paperwork was completed just as Pete arrived in a taxi. Flight home was OK - had to dodge a lot of weather. Very nice in Fort Worth (hot!). After all paperwork completed, arrived at the house around 2000. We got home early - but whew!

Temecula, CA (USA)

Woke up at 0730 and had breakfast at the Glorietta Bay Inn. Next, I went over to the flight line in an attempt to help the crew in getting parts.  While there, I met up with Nick and some other guys I know. Got some work done on the computer, too. Went back to the hotel at around 0930. My cousin, John, picked me up around 1015 and drove me to his home. On the way there we got to stop for immigration checks along I-15. Met up with Ann and the boys and learned that Mary and Leo were in town, too! They arrived soon after and immediately wanted to head over to the Wilson Creek Winery to buy almond champagne. We stopped for a bite to eat the the Inn & Out Burger and then drove over to enjoy one of the perks of our Wine Club membership. Mary and Leo had never been before, so we tried lots of different drinks and bought lots of bottles! Afterwards, we headed back to John & Ann's - somehow, the kids were still excited to go do something. Watched the boys hit golf balls at the driving range and chatted for most of the afternoon - weather was great! At 1800, drove over to BJ's (a micro-brewery that serves pizza and burgers). Had a good beer and buffalo chicken pizza and spent some time with Shannon and Sean. Went back to John's at around 2000 (they asked me to stay with them) and said goodbye to Mary and Leo. Watched a little TV, but went to bed rather early, since John wants to get up at 0400...

San Diego, CA (USA)

Today was the big day of the trip - three round trips between Lemoore and San Diego. We were ready, though, and everything went very well. After checking out of the Hornet Inn at NAS Lemoore, we started our mission (0800). Weather cooperated, but that also meant that there were lots of private pilots testing out the airspace and beach scenery. Dodged lots of little aircraft and managed to get all the people where they needed to be.  We were on deck a NAS North Island, all flights completed, and it appeared that we were about to depart for our flight home to Fort Worth. While the aircraft was being fueled, I ran over to pick up some food for the road and even had a few minutes to eat. Unfortunately, this was when our crew discovered a leaking brake line... After some consultation with Maintenance Control at home, we decided that we needed to give up any ideas of flying and, instead, spend the night in San Diego. Vance was really antsy and insisted that he needed to get home by tomorrow morning.  So, he suddenly he left us and went to the airport. That was a bit shocking but the rest of us checked into our hotel (Glorietta Bay Inn). I called John, Kevin and Wade to see what kind of things I could do during the next few days - I figure we won't get fixed until Friday morning. Met up with the rest of the guys for margaritas at Miguel's. Bed around 2200.

Lemoore, CA (USA)

Didn't have to start early today, but with the time-zone difference I was awake before 0600. Luckily, the day was supposed to be short, so I knew I'd have time to catch up on sleep later... Checked out of the NAS Whidbey Island Navy Gateway Inn at about 0800 and headed to the flight line.  When we took off (at around 1100), we had some awesome views of the mountains - Baker, Rainier, St. Helens, Adams, Hood. I don't think I've ever seen them so clearly! Sadly, the weather degraded on the way down to San Diego - with the reduced visibility, we actually had some trouble getting in. Fortunately, the conditions began improving while we were on the ground. Since this was a holiday, we had to wait until the next airport opened before we could depart North Island NAS. During the break, I ate lunch at Rice King and relaxed. Took off at around 1530 and flew up to Lemoore, where we spent the night. I've never stayed here before, but I've only heard how boring it was - being here on a holiday sure didn't sweeten the deal. We managed to find a McDonalds that was open, but otherwise there was almost nothing to do. The lady at the hotel (Hornet Inn) mentioned that we were near the "Raisin Capital" and a Jelly Belly factory - we considered an exploration trip but, instead, went back to the room around 1900. Watched movies all evening - sure wish I had brought my laptop...

Whidbey Island, WA (USA)

The morning started out with a fun party at Mountasia - a go-cart and arcade place the kids have enjoyed since we moved here. There were 10 kids and we got to have pizza and cake. Mollie and I raced in a two-person go-cart against Brenna and Erin's friends - it was very fun. Unfortunately, I had to leave the party early because I had a mission to the West Coast.  I hurried over the NAS JRB Fort Worth and met up the rest of the gang for our flight to Washington State. It has been a long time since I saw Vance - we went to school and worked together several years ago. We took off around 1600 and had an uneventful trip to Whidbey Island - the enroute views were tremendous. When we arrived, the weather was crisp and cool. I called Jeff and Nora - they were both enjoying their days off. I hoped to go down to the beach below Deception Pass Bridge for a cookout, but we ran out of time during our check-in to the hotel (Navy Gateway Inn). We managed to fit one stop on the coast (for a short time) on our drive to Anacortes, but everyone was really hungry by that point. We hurried over to the Brown Lantern (see SEP 2008) and had some fun for several hours - Jeff even showed up around 2030. Went back to the hotel around 2100 and got right to sleep.

Roanoke, TX (USA)

We had an opportunity to visit with some other Coogans today - our old friends from Amelia Island, FL. They actually came to town to visit their children and grand-children - what a small world! John and Mary were nice enough to let us use their pool when we visited them in JUL 1999 - the kids were just over a year old - and they have kept in touch for the last 10 years. We met up with them in a little town north of Fort Worth (called Roanoke) at Babe's Chicken (#1 - original) restaurant. It was a cool place: there were only two choices of meal (fried chicken or chicken fried steak). Sides (mashed potatoes, creamed corn, salad and biscuits) kept coming throughout the meal (as the bowls emptied). The kids had fun talking to their "cousins" and liked the staff of the place - they sang the "Hokey Pokey." After a few hours of eating and visiting, we had to say "goodbye."

Grapevine, TX (USA)

We weren't far away, so we decided to end Aunt Judy and Uncle Jim's visit over at downtown Grapevine. The closest we ever got before was when we visited the Gaylord Texan hotel (see DEC 2008). It was a great experience - the little downtown is full of shops and parks. We also squeezed in a visit to an Italian restaurant that served gelato... The little gazebo in the town square was great for pictures. After enjoying the pleasant weather, we finally had to say "goodbye" - it was sad. The girls truly had a memorable visit with their aunt and uncle - asking lots of questions about my mom when she was a kid. They were sad when we had to drive away - hope it won't be long before we can get together again! Drive home was quick and easy.

Southlake, TX (USA)

Today was a very special day - we were blessed with a chance to visit with my mom's sister and her husband (Aunt Judy & Uncle Jim). They were in town for a wedding and stayed longer so they could see us. I haven't seen them since FEB 2002, but this was the first time they have met my wife and kids. It was great to be able to spend time with them - a truly memorable day! They brought photos of their children and (17) grand-kids. For several hours we chatted at our house and then we decided to drive over to the Southlake Town Square (where I got our car registered in APR). Very little traffic in that direction - even during rush hour. When we arrived, we found that Monday is a good day to stop by (lots of shops are closed) and enjoy the "old down town" flavor of the area. We went in several nice stores and scouted out other things (the HUGE movie theatre) for another trip. We ate dinner at the Rockfish Grill - first time we've tried that one - and everyone cleaned their plates. The conversation was great and everyone was in very good spirits after that. We took lots of photos and didn't want the day to end...

Fairfield, CA (USA)

Finished with fuel and got going soon after. Tried to get a little sleep on the way back to Fort Worth, but the seats were uncomfortable (I guess I must have gotten a little sleep, though, since I got woke up by the loud people around me!). Landed at Alliance Field again - just as the sun started to crack over the eastern horizon. Weather was great - cool and clear. Drive home OK - caught the kids eating breakfast and gave them the Hawaii souvenirs. Then, took a nap - needed to be awake to see the relatives this afternoon & evening!

Honolulu, HI (USA)

Didn't have to wake up early this morning, but did anyway (I'm still thinking this five hour time difference will be hard to re-adjust to when I get home...). Met Keith and John for breakfast - we were going to the 24 hour coffee house down the street from the Hale Koa Hotel, but they had a huge crowd by 0900. Instead, at breakfast with a beach view at the hotel. They had a great buffet - guava juice, fresh pineapple and coconut syrup for the pancakes. Relaxed and enjoyed the weather for over an hour. John & Keith went to pack and I borrowed the car to drive up to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific - located on a hill above Waikiki. We had driven by it almost every day, but I was glad I had a map for the last several blocks. When I got there, I was astounded by the fact that it is located inside an old volcano (the "Punchbowl") and some areas of the cemetery have beautiful views of the whole south side of Oahu. I spent about an hour there - looking for good photo opportunities, marveling at the unique bird species and trees and paying my respect to a Coogan sailor buried there. I was also impressed by the number of families around this morning, all leaving beautiful cut flowers on their loved ones' graves. Drove back to the hotel (with about an hour to spare until we had to leave) and checked out of my room. At 1300, we left for the airport. As usual, the rest of the group was on its own program, so we all got separated again. When we finally did meet up, the Agriculture Inspector (legendary for every visit I've made to this island) was very unhappy about how he had to wait for us (what's new!). Got on the aircraft around 1600 and left soon after. I really do not like the Gulfstream that we used (again) - too crowded for comfort, bathroom smells bleed into the cockpit, seats uncomfortable. Still, I'm glad to have a ride home! Spent some time with Keith in the front, marveling at the avionics and whiz-bang features of the aircraft. I guess I would admit that the plane would be fun to FLY! Landed near San Francisco right at midnight (fuel stop).

Kane'ohe Bay, HI (USA)

I was not ready for this morning... (!). I woke up on time, but was moving very slowly after last night's excursion... Keith called and he and John had some fun at my expense all the way to work... I needed a few extra hours to get back on track, but finally did. Got all my work done, at least, and was very happy when we were headed back to the hotel. The only experience I can remember like this (related to work, anyway) was back when I learned I would get to fly jets (see JAN 1993)... Shouldn't have repeated it, I guess, but I made it through with only three other guys (14 started). Feeling better by the time we got back to the Hale Koa Hotel. Went to dinner with John and Keith in the restaurant on the ground floor. I had a great meal with lightly grilled Mahi-Mahi (and lots of water). We chatted for several hours afterwards, too. Went nearby to pick up some more souvenirs for the kids and spent the rest of the night packing. Bed around 2200 (wanted to catch up from yesterday).

Kane'ohe Bay, HI (USA)

This morning started early (Keith needed a ride so he could fly back to the Mainland). We arrived around 0730 and then I drove around the place to see what interesting things they had. It was definitely worth it - lots of beautiful views and things to do. I even had time for a haircut before we had to be at work (0900). Subsequently, I got a lot done before lunch. Things were actually clicking along nicely and it took a little effort to get away from work to have lunch. The folks here took me up to the top of a hill where there was a club serving "make your own pasta bar." It was delicious (and unexpected). Afterwards, they took me over to the highest point overlooking Kane'ohe Bay - weather was awesome and I can truly appreciate why people love living here! Worked after lunch (thought we would be done around 1630 again) until I got a call from John that everyone else was ready to go (I wasn't). Luckily, Steve was still working and I had a ride home. Finished by 1630 and we made it back to the Hale Koa Hotel before 1700. Quickly changed and then met up with most of our group by the pool bar. After a little while there (and a couple of mai tais), most of us continued down the beach in what I'll always remember as "The Beach Crawl." Point 1 was our hotel (Barefoot Bar), Point 2 the Outrigger Reef (Shorebird), Point 3 the Sheraton-Waikiki (Rimfire), Point 4 the Sheraton Royal-Hawaiian, Point 5 the Outrigger Waikiki (Duke's), Point 6 was Moana Surfrider and Point 7 was the Duke Statue on the beach. After some celebratory photos, we made the turn back for the hotel via Kalakaua Avenue. We later stopped at Jimmy Buffet's at the Beachcomber and at Kelly O'Neill's. I was able to survive with only three other guys - with mai-tais at every stop (they are like Hurricanes from New Orleans - yikes!!). Made it back to the hotel with them - under my own power (and still had my wallet & shoes) - but as I fell asleep I knew I would soon be paying this night back...

Pearl Harbor, HI (USA)

Today was one of the most interesting days of the trip. It began early again, but we only had to meet with our hosts for a couple of hours. Went back to the Hale Koa Hotel and relaxed near the beach (had lunch too) for a couple of hours. Then, changed back into work clothes for a once-in-a-lifetime experience: a visit to the USS Missouri ("Mighty Mo" - BB-63). It is moored in Pearl Harbor within a stone's throw of the USS Arizona. In fact, it appears to be very close to where the USS Oklahoma capsized during the 07 DEC 1941 attack. After we finished a very inspiring ceremony - and a personalized tour of the ship with a retired crew-member, we drove around on Ford's Island. Keith and I brought a change of clothes so we wouldn't have to stay in our "penalty suits" all day (everyone else drove all the way back to the hotel!!!). We had a great time seeing the views from the island - ships and a huge early warning radar platform. We left Ford's Island and discovered the HUGE exchange complex - found some good souvenirs. Afterwards, we drove around on the old Pearl Harbor submarine base - visiting a memorial to the nearly 4000 men who died during World War II - and later found ourselves driving along the coast near the Honolulu International Airport. Fortunately, this was good timing for our next work-related event - a cookout on the ocean at Foster Point. It turned out to be a nice event - great music, special dishes prepared by our hosts and a beautiful sunset. The weather was very pleasant (never too hot or cold). We had no trouble getting back to the hotel (2100) and I took the opportunity to use the internet (signal worked from Hilton Hawaiian Village nearby). Watched some TV and went to bed relatively early...

Honolulu, HI (USA)

Got up earlier today so we could make the physical training event that our hosts were holding. We got there right at 0700 and it was already getting hot & sweaty. Still, it didn't last long and we had some good fun. Afterwards, I went over to change for work and found the water was out at the gym. Luckily, the pool next door had water. I was one of the first to make it in to work and I got a lot done before the rest of the crowd showed up. Lunch was another great spouses' club creation (BBQ). Worked until around 1600 and actually finished when everyone else did. We just have to wrap up a few more loose ends tomorrow morning and we'll be done here! We drove back to Waikiki and I was back to my room at the Hale Koa Hotel by around 1715. Ate dinner (with Keith and John) in the hotel but just had an appetizer. Afterwards, Keith and I drove over to Ward's Cinemas to see the movie "X Men Origins: Wolverine" - it was pretty good. Back at the hotel around 2300 - bed...

Honolulu, HI (USA)

Some knucklehead thought it would be a great idea if we left the Hale Koa Hotel this morning at 0645. The guys we were inspecting didn't think we would arrive until 0830, so when we showed up at 0715, they were not happy... I think it was because they had some amazing plans for our visit (just like yesterday's arrival). I got a lot of paperwork (from home) done while waiting for the official kick-off. After that, we were back on track. My counterpart, Jim, was also the coordinator for the whole event, so there were a lot of distractions... At lunch time, we got to have a delicious meal prepared by the wives club and the executive unit these guys have for VIP passengers. After lunch, continued the review. Probably only about 3/4 done when (1630) Steve (our boss) told us to wrap things up for the return to the hotel. I do have some of tomorrow, so it wasn't that bad, I guess. Changed quickly at the hotel and then met Keith again for a walk down to dinner at Gyu Kaku (Japanese BBQ - see APR 2004). It was just like I remembered - Kirin beer, beef tongue, scallops & shrimp, great soup and salad. Definitely worth it (it had better be, for the PRICE!). Walked back to the hotel via some late night shops. Debated some more with Keith on the way. Ended up watching some TV until very late...

Honolulu, HI (USA)

[Inspection Trip] Woke early (0530) and drove over to pick up Keith - he had flown previously the plane we were going to use for our trip and had left it at Alliance Field. I've often driven by there, but had never used it for a mission before. We were the first ones there, so I had a chance to check out the Gulfstream IV that was going to fly us to Hawaii. We took off around 0900 - weather was rolling in and we had some bumps on the way to 45,000 feet (my first time that high - in any aircraft!). Not much scenery on the way, but when we got to San Diego, I was really glad for the executive size windows (big!). On the ground for about an hour - had a chance to pick up some food and visit with some old friends who live there. Back in the air again, hooked up my computer and was able to play my video games for about four of the five and a half hour flight. Our arrival in Kane'hoe Bay was breathtaking (mountains, beaches, Gilligan's Island!) - now I know what Floyd (our neighbor in Virginia) meant when he used to come back from Hawaii... We are on an inspection visit, but that didn't stop our hosts from treating us like tourists to the islands - we received warm Alohas and flower leis. My favorite, though, was the very fresh pineapple! After some paperwork, Keith and I ended up being the last to leave for the hotel - and we didn't have a map. We explored a little around the base (not on purpose) but eventually ended up on HI-61 (the correct one, we learned later). At the end of that road (the Pali Highway), we ended up driving in Waikiki looking for familiar landmarks. I had never even looked for Chinatown, but it would be worth it someday... We arrived at the hotel (this time, the Hale Koa) and found that we had actually beat a few from our group! Check in (to room 666!) was easy and I had to kill about two hours before meeting up with everyone for Happy Hour at the Barefoot Bar (on the beach). I've had a drink at this place almost every time I visit the island, but it was usually a small group. After several hours of introductions from our hosts and at least one mai tai, a smaller group of us (including a few guys with their wives) walked over to the Outrigger Reef (one of the hotels I stayed in many times before) and had dinner in the Shorebird Restaurant there. Everyone else grilled their own kabobs - I was already full (and eating my fourth meal with the five hour time change!). Instead, I enjoyed a salad and we chatted for several hours. Back to the hotel around 2200. Keith and I had a great debate on the way back - too bad we had to go to sleep already. Time awake since this "morning": 22 hours...

Dallas, TX (USA)

We've been wanting to see the Tutankhamun Exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art for several months and we finally got our chance today. We left the house around 1100 and made it over to Dallas (with some bad traffic on the I-820 again) in just over an hour. We had no problem finding a place to park, but when we started to walk it was clear we should have brought an umbrella! No problem with lines, but we found out that the exhibition was using a queue system - and he would have to wait for four hours to get in to see Tut. Oh well, the ticket price included a tour of the rest of the museum. We had a great time visiting all of the displays - art from all over the world. There were paintings by Monet, Etruscan sculpture and lots of gold. There were even some mummies - a hit with the kids. We actually saw almost everything - and there were no lines. It was clear, however, that the Tut exhibit was going to be just like Disney World. All day long we heard the crowds and saw the lines throughout the building. At least someone thought of putting the queue under a covered tent (came in handy when the huge thunderstorm began)! We spent about an hour in a "kid's zone" - where we made golden crowns for our visit to the "Boy King." Around 1530 we made it in the queue and waited for about half an hour before they let us into the exhibit. I had seen the Exhibition when it toured the States in the 1970s - and I remembered the golden mask. Unfortunately (and they didn't tell us until we were inside), that impressive piece didn't come with the exhibit this time. In fact, most of the artifacts in the display were 18th Dynasty BEFORE Tut. The lines were terrible - no organization inside the display. If we had waited to see each item, we would have spent three to four hours waiting. Instead, I got the kids to sneak into the crowds around an artifact and get their fill of Ancient Egypt. I do think they were truly impressed, especially when we got to the final rooms of the exhibit. There were actual necklaces, chairs and other funerary items from Tut's tomb there - and lots of video to show the items that weren't on the tour. I am glad we visited the DMA - it was definitely worth the trip - but I was a little disappointed about what the Tut Exhibit contained. Oh well - the kids will remember it! They'll even remember the run back to the car in the pouring rain... On the way back to Fort Worth, we were in a huge thunderstorm. I turned on the radio and we heard about softball size hail and the fact that the Dallas Cowboys practice facility (nearby) had COLLAPSED!!! Eventually, things calmed down again - that is North Texas in the Spring! We had made plans to eat at the Saltgrass Steakhouse (see JUL 2008) and we were able to do that, despite the weather. Everyone enjoyed that a lot! Kids were in good spirits, talking all about what they had seen. We need to visit Dallas again for some more culture!

Flower Mound, TX (USA)

Had a doctor's appointment this afternoon in Flower Mound - located about 30 miles north of our home. The drive up I-35W was nice - I missed the traffic. Passed Alliance Field and the Texas Motor Speedway - both quiet... Along TX-1171 saw lots of very nice homes and ranches. Lots of building going on over in the center of Flower Mound - I guess these are people who moved out from South Lake (?). I thought it would take about 30 minutes from my work, but with some traffic and the back-roads under construction I barely made it for my appointment. Drive home seemed to be quicker - this place is worth checking out again!

Pensacola, FL (USA)

Got an early start this morning after a GREAT sleep! Stopped at Wawa for a breakfast snack and then got a ride over to Northeast Philadelphia Airport. After a couple of hours waiting for the weather in Florida (one of our stops) to improve, we instead flew down to Virginia Beach for fuel. Ended up getting to Pensacola after all - weather OK by them. Short flight over to Fort Worth with great views of Mississippi River and Texas. Nicky and the girls met me at the airport and I picked up my car with Mollie. Evening was fun, with the kids' excitement about the Irish trinkets. Had a nice dinner with them, talking about school and their fun events (kickball, Girl Scouts, etc.). Exhausted by 2200, but tried to watch a show. I don't usually fall asleep with the TV on, but this time I did... I hope I can get back to this time zone soon!

Willow Grove, PA (USA)

Woke up around 0800 and drove around looking for a place that made cheese-steaks to go. Lee's door was open (for cleaning) and they actually made food for me before they were really open for business. Very nice!  I got gas in Horsham (0915), returned my rental car (Enterprise) at 0920 and was back on NAS JRB Willow Grove by 1030. I met up with my co-workers (who had arrived on Tuesday) and visited with several other friends. My work colleagues and I were supposed to fly back to Fort Worth around 1200 but the aircraft for our lift ended up being broken at that time. We spent the next three hours trying to figure out what was going to happen before we were told we'd have to wait until tomorrow... By that point, there were no rooms left at Navy Lodge (where I stayed the other two nights), so I caught a ride with the others to the nearby Courtyard (see SEP 2007). Spent most of the evening chatting with Brady L. Realized I was still tired, so I went to bed early - the bed was really comfortable!  One more day in the Keystone State...

St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador (Canada)

Woke up around 0800 and headed over to Auchan with Hartig. I always enjoy seeing what people I'm with will buy - olive oil, cheese, meat (etc.). I bought some new things this time - blood orange juice and sambuca. We made it back to the NAS Sigonella Navy Gateway Inn by around 0915.  After that, I packed, checked out of my room and headed over to the aircraft. Before we could depart, we had some issues with weather brief and flight plan.  The best thing about the morning, though, was that passengers were there on time!  As a result, we took off only a little late but made up the time during the flight to Ireland. This was the last day of flying with Bob M. and I told him how much I appreciated the good experience of flying with him.  My job in Fort Worth doesn't often give me a chance to get in the air on a big trip like this and I am sometimes concerned that I'm losing my edge.  He definitely helped me be my best "International/Overwater TAC."  Upon landing at Shannon, we parked in a different place from where we normally get stashed.  This led to a minor problem during engine starts because a push back was required. Seems like the whole trip has been "new things we have to fix."  One bonus of the time on the ground in Ireland - I had time to visit the Duty Free Shop, where I bought Irish flags, Shamrock Rosary Bead bracelets, etc. After departing Europe, our flight back to North America was in daylight all the way.  We did have some radio problems but made it to St. John's OK and had a great stop at Torbay. Got airborne early again (I couldn't believe that the trip was on schedule!!!). On the last leg, I saw Cape Cod and some of Long Island - very pretty. Ended up with the early descent and sun-in-the-face approach. On the ground at NAS JRB Willow Grove just before dark. Felt a bit sad about ending this mission but thanked everyone profusely, telling them I hoped we got lucky enough to fly together again soon.  After grabbing my gear, I started looking for my rental car.  At first, no luck.  Eventually, I figured out that my friend, Brady L. had it (I'd left the keys with the Duty Office).  Eventually, I got everything over to the Navy Lodge and checked into my room. It was nice to be back in the USA, but I couldn't believe how tired I am from the seven time zone changes (in both directions)! Spent a little time relaxing before hitting the hay.  Hoping for an airlift home in the morning...
