Nomad Life - Day 41
My day started early again, with teleworking (0600) and breakfast (0700) at the Navy Lodge. Outside, the weather was rather miserable, with cool drizzle constant throughout the morning. Meanwhile, I had a steady stream of meetings for most of the day and only had a short break to make lunch (cooking in my room). As a result, I didn't go anywhere until my work day was done (1615). I'd been coordinating with Erin to see if she wanted to get together but she hadn't responded by the time I left JEB Little Creek - Fort Story. Despite the continuing (light) rain, I decided to return to the area where I'd seen the Cape Henry Trail yesterday - after driving east on Shore Drive (US-60) to the bridge over the Lynnhaven Inlet, I followed residential roads until I located a spot to park. By then (1700), the wind strength had increased and I considered ducking into a nearby happy hour venue instead of walking. However, I found the trail to be well shielded from the wind and rain (lots of trees) and spent about 90 minutes walking between the western terminus of the trail and about half a mile into First Landing State Park. Since my heel bursitis seems to have returned, the feeling of getting some real exercise was a welcome relief and I was able to log my 10K steps before I finished my outdoor time. I'd heard from Erin while I was walking but all she really told me was that Brenna had decided not to drive to Virginia Beach until the following day. Since it was close to dinner time, I decided to head south on Great Neck Road until I reached US-58 (Virginia Beach Boulevard). With a coupon that Mollie had given me I got some dinner at Burger King (1850) and ate inside the restaurant. During this window, Erin finally asked if I wanted to come over to visit for the evening - gladly, I accepted the offer. By 1930, I had reached Erin and Austin's home and spent more than an hour visiting with them. It was great to have a relaxing time together without any real agenda or plan - that's been pretty rare during the last few years because of the busyness of our lives. At 2100, I said goodbye to Austin, my daughter and Kiki and returned to the Navy Lodge. Along the way, I completed my audiobook re-read of "Pilgrim's Progress" - the idea of listening to it during my Nomad Life had been suggested by one of my Knights of Columbus brothers (Jim F.) and I believe it was a worthwhile use of my plentiful driving time. In my room again (2130), I did some reading and Duolingo exercises and caught up on current events (news of the day was focused on the shooting of Charlie Kirk). I'd hoped to get to sleep a lot earlier than the previous few nights but I still was awake at 2250 and had to force myself to turn out the light. Not the most exciting day of my life on the road but it was good to feel productive for my job and still have time to check out a new walking trail!
