Nomad Life - Day 34
After all of the drama the previous evening, I slept fitfully and was interrupted a few times by late night texts. Still, I was awake by 0600 and (sluggishly) began teleworking in Kim and David's kitchen. Mollie checked in with me and I was able to determine that she was (mostly) OK. Later, David came by on his way to work (0730) and Kim visited with me between two meetings I had (in the 0930 timeframe). Breakfast was a couple of energy bars and tea. Otherwise, I stayed online in Teams discussions until nearly noon. Having earlier made a plan to meet my friend, Kelly T., at nearby Lazy Mike's, I drove there during one of my breaks (1205) and we had a nice lunch. I ordered a "Middletown Mike's", which was essentially a Rueben with some special features, and topped off my meal with some cherry pie a la mode. There was plenty of news to share (kids, work, etc.) and the food was delicious. Afterwards (1315), I said goodbye and returned to Kim's house for the rest of my telework day. Meetings continued until nearly 1600 and I then departed for the West Falls Church Metro station. Unlike the previous two days, the parking lot was nearly full and I felt lucky to have found a place to park. Before long, I was on my way east on the Orange Line and, after reaching Clarendon, I exited to street level. My company had asked me to vet a potential candidate for hire and I met him (Chris B.) at Brass Rabbit. Between about 1615 and 1815, we chatted about potential work he might do, company culture and various other topics - it all seemed to go really well. After saying goodbye to him, I returned to the Clarendon Metro Station and felt really lucky to be able to immediately board a west bound Orange Line train. Unfortunately, this luck was entirely due to some single track operations near East Falls Church and I ended up trapped on the track with the train for about 20 minutes before we were able to move. When I finally reached my car again (1920), I was quite relieved; it felt even better when I was able to use my long-dormant Metro parking balance to exit the facility. Back at Kim's house, I was surprised that no one else was there because I thought we'd planned to eat dinner together (Kim later told me that she was working later than she'd hoped and David was doing errands on his way home). Fortunately, Kim had already told me about some leftover lasagna ("it has your name on it") and I happily devoured that for my dinner. There was also some tiramisu that I started to enjoy just as David got home. As we usually do, we ended up having a nice conversation until Kim arrived 30 minutes later. She announced that she was exhausted from work so I only had about 15 minutes to chat with her about my Nomad Life (she'd requested background) before she headed to bed (2030). After that, I was able to start some laundry and catch up on some reading. Actually, this evening turned out to be one of the more relaxing I've had since I departed New Hampshire because I was on my own until bedtime (2220). Only then did I realize I'd only walked about one mile (around the house and transit to Arlington) during the entire day - I need to pay more attention to my steps! Overall, a rather "normal" day of telework but I was still glad to catch up with some friends while I had the chance!
