Disney Christmas Trip - Day 10
We woke up early in the morning at the Holiday Inn Express and ate breakfast at the hotel before departing Florence (SC). Our trip home was pretty easy and didn't take as long as it had to get there. Some traffic near Fayetteville, NC, caused us to detour towards Elizabeth City to finish the trip. Great to be home after such a fun time!

Disney Christmas Trip - Day 9
It was our last day - and we wanted to try something new. We visited the Holy Land Experience theme park (arrived at 1200). It is a recreation of Jerusalem and other Biblical sites with actors playing the role of people from the First Century. There were some interesting reenactments and lots of fun for the kids. Erin got sick, so we took it easy for most of the day. Brenna and I checked out a display of old Bibles - some from the early Church. We didn't stay as long as we thought we would, but it was probably for the best. We decided to leave for home around 1700. We drove through Daytona Beach on the way - I was hoping to stop at Embry Riddle to see the campus - but we couldn't get in. The Tornado we had narrowly avoided on Christmas Day had caused significant damage. We did see the Speedway and got a little flavor of the area, but we will have to come back again some day. As we continued north, I began to get tired. There have been times when I would have just kept going - tonight, though, I called "Uncle" as we approached Florence, South Carolina. Fortunately, we easily found a Holiday Inn Express there and got to sleep before midnight. We'll finish our drive home tomorrow...

Disney Christmas Trip - Day 8
We went to Epcot for the whole day today. There were plenty of interesting international experiences and we enjoyed the weather again - it is getting much cooler, though. The highlight of the day was when we were able to have dinner in Italy and then got an exclusive seat for the Disney Candlelight Procession. The performance was a narration of the Christmas story by Marlee Matalin accompanied by excellent singers. We enjoyed the event and avoided a late afternoon shower - there was a roof over our heads... Mollie was getting tired, so we returned to the condo. Nicky decided to take the twins back to the Magic Kingdom for some late night fun. It was much more crowded and very difficult to get on many rides. Still, they enjoyed themselves...

Disney Christmas Trip - Day 7
We spent the whole day at the Animal Kingdom. I think this really might be the kids' favorite place of all of the Disney Parks. We enjoyed several parades and shows and tried many of the newer rides that have been added. At the end of the day, we went back to the Magic Kingdom for one more night. As before, the night temperatures were much cooler - it scared many of the other people away, I guess. We had lots more fun this time...

Disney Christmas Trip - Day 6
We took a break from Disney today to visit Sea World. What a fun way to spend the day! Mollie had never been and was very excited to see all the animals and the dolphin/orca shows. We would never had left at all, since we were having so much fun, but the temperatures took an even steeper dive today and the kids were not dressed for the night at 40 degrees. Still, the whole day was kind of relaxing and a nice change of pace... Kids were a little cranky tonight, so it looks like an early bedtime for two, anyway. Brenna (who was acting sweet for some reason) and I sneaked out and tried Disney Quest at Downtown Disney. We were there for a long time and had fun with all the free video games and interactive entertainment.

Disney Christmas Trip - Day 5
We woke up early and went over to Epcot for another Disney Princess breakfast. Mollie was too little last time to really enjoy it. This time, the kids all had fun (it was still raining outside, so at least we were all dry!). Later, it cleared up - and the crowds still hadn't arrived. So we checked out some of the rides that are made for the older kids: "Mission Space" and "Soarin'." Brenna loved them all and I even got Erin on them, too. I took Mollie on the "Finding Nemo" ride in the evening and then I walked with the kids through the "Living Seas." It was a good day - and the rain seems to finally be gone. Temperatures are definitely going down, so I'm glad we already had our fill of Typhoon Lagoon...

Disney Christmas Trip - Day 4
We got up really early to open Christmas presents around our little purple tree (the kids insisted we bring it - I think it was purchased at the Disney store about 20 years ago...). We didn't spend a lot of time at the condo this morning - we needed to hurry so we could get to the Magic Kingdom for the Christmas festivities. Nicky had planned to watch the Christmas Parade - thinking it was on TV - but it turned out that they had filmed the broadcast version earlier in December... Oh well, the parade was still great. Mollie and I explored some of the little kid rides while the twins were with Nicky. In the end, there was a Tornado Warning and a HUGE thunderstorm (oh, and all the umbrellas were in the car...). I stood by Mollie under the only place we could stay out of the rain - but the puddles made us wet too. Mollie was wearing a Disney rain poncho (we purchased it here four years ago when it was raining during another visit) but got just as wet sloshing around... By the time we were all together in the car again, we were soaked! We made things lighter with a nice dinner at Pizzaria UNO, we went back to the condo to rest (naps were actually taken!). We realized around 1800 that it had stopped raining, so we headed back out to get some Character autographs at the Animal Kingdom. Because of the earlier wet rain, there was NOONE there at all! We had all of the rides to ourselves and had some memorable moments with Mickey, Minnie and Donald. It was a late bedtime, but we can put this Christmas near the top of the list!

Disney Christmas Trip - Day 3
Woke up rather early - wanted to take advantage of one more day of Typhoon Lagoon since the temperatures are still good. On the way, I took the kids to Orange World - the building is shaped like a giant orange ("World's Largest" - 92 feet wide, 60 feet high and 35,000 pounds)! We found some flip flops that should work at the park (wish we had them yesterday). The huge wave pool at the water park is so big it is like a huge Tsunami - scared Mollie. We enjoyed many more rides with few other guests. While we were there, we learned about the Photo Pass option - photos without a camera. We ended up with some great shots of the kids on the rides. The pass came in handy throughout the trip - lots of family pictures to share with our family. Nicky picked us up at about 1500 and we went back to the condo to unwind for a little while. Around 1800 we drove over to Winter Haven for Christmas Eve with Nicky's Aunt Barbara and Uncle Walt. It was a nice time - I always like chatting and smoking cigars with Walt. They were off to the Northeast in the morning, so we went back to the condo and actually got to bed early.

Disney Christmas Trip - Day 2
We arrived in the Orlando area at 0300. Since we hadn't planned on this scenario, we ended up with a long search for a reasonably priced hotel. Once we found one (Quality Inn Plaza by Rosen Hotels & Resorts), we finally got a few hours of sleep. Everyone else was ready to go by 1015 and we headed towards our time-share condo at Orlando Vacation Villas in Kissimmee. We don't (yet?) own a time share - this was a test stay - and we were hoping to take full advantage of the experience. After getting the car unpacked, we drove to Shades of Green to buy our tickets. With that completed, Nicky dropped me and the kids off at Typhoon Lagoon, one of the Disney Water Parks. She told us it was "too cold" for her to enjoy swimming. Maybe that was true but we had SO much fun (weather at 85 degrees and hardly any people). The folks at the ticket booth gave the kids some "First Time" gear (pins, stickers) since they had never been to one of the water parks. Highlights of the day were the Family Waterslide (we did that one five times) and the "Garbage Pail" ice-cream (a sand pail full of about ten scoops and assorted toppings). Later in the day, we met up with Nicky and then drove over to MGM Studios to have dinner. We ended up eating at a place called Hollywood & Vine. Afterwards, we went to watch the "Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights" (a spectacular show - lights and music). After a few hours, the kids insisted that we try out the Magic Kingdom before bed - they are open late - so we ran over there with just enough time to stroll around before they closed. There was a night parade and some fireworks. Then we headed back to the condo. What a day!

Disney Christmas Trip - Day 1
We left Hampton Roads kind of late today because we really weren't ready for the trip. The kids got out of school at the regular time, but we didn't drive out of town until about 1700. By then, the holiday traffic was unbelievable :-(. After several detours to avoid the jams on I-95 (we paralleled the highway for quite some time on US-117), we reached an area of the Interstate where we could move. Unfortunately, the rain storm hit right after that and the drive was severely slowed again. We stopped for dinner at South of the Border ("see Pedro") and then continued all the way until the trip turned into Day 2...

Great Dismal Swamp, VA (USA)
The kids and I checked out the wildlife preserve today. It is on the Virginia-North Carolina border and actually has wild bears. We walked on a few old roads and boardwalks looking for them, but they never came out of the swamp. We did see signs of them - they like to scratch their claws on the 4X4s on the boardwalk. Later, we explored around Suffolk to see if we could find the Planters' Peanut factory - we did, but they don't do tours... Instead, drove over to Williamsburg and checked out the Great Wolf Lodge. It is a HUGE indoor water park! We tried out the "Cub Club" activities center and got information for visiting the place some time. It looks like it would be very fun around Christmas or the New Year. Had dinner at a Waffle House on the way home - both Erin and Mollie very sick after driving around in the car all day.

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 5
Waking up for the last time in our room at Charleston Place, we started to get ready for our drive home. After breakfast, we bid goodbye to all of our cousins (especially Bonnie) and started our drive towards home. On the way, Nicky let me stop for an hour to search through a cemetery (for Coogans) on the outskirts of the town. Didn't find much, unfortunately... Back to the driving, we made our way to I-26 and then to I-95. Just outside of Fayetteville, North Carolina, the traffic started to get bad. Like I often do, I decided to take some back roads to try to get around the mess. We ended up travelling through some pretty rural areas near the Albemarle sound and later passed East Carolina University. The kids were good during the long drive and we made it to Elizabeth City just before nightfall. Bonus for Mollie: entered Virginia near her favorite place, the "Dismal Bear Swamp." What a great trip!

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 4
It was a little slower pace today. In the morning, Nicky went out to dinner with Bonnie and the kids went shopping. Meanwhile, I went over to the city archives to learn more about a Coogan who lived here many years ago. I wasn't there too long, but I learned some interesting details about his life and about other relatives of his who lived in the area. Later in the day, the kids and I did went swimming - Mollie is doing great! Later, we went to dinner at a fancy place on the north side of town. It was delicious. The Charleston Place did a special Christmas Tree lighting tonight - everyone enjoyed that. We had a chance for a little more visiting, but everyone got to bed pretty early (due to Sunday travel plans).

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 3
The whole family headed over to tour a Southern Plantation in Mount Pleasant today. The place was just like something out of a movie - it was called Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens. They used to make bricks there and grow rice. We were entertained by a lady who told us stories from the days when the slaves worked there and we walked the gardens of the plantation owner. There were horses and other animals - that made Mollie happy. Later, some of the group decided to go aboard the aircraft carrier nearby. Ellen, Andy and our family, however, decided to take the ferry boat out to Fort Sumter. It was a fun trip - we enjoyed the last of the warm days and saw some great sites in the harbor. After a few hours out there, we headed back to the Charleston Place to enjoy another evening in Bonnie's room with the family.

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 2
We slept in pretty late, actually, but still made it for the early dinner at one of Charleston Place's very nice restaurants. We took our family photo in a beautiful garden next door. Dinner was great and everyone had a nice time - including the kids at their very own table. We walked around the city a little bit after dinner and made sure that we enjoyed the warm weather. The kids and I found a pretty waterfront spot where we could watch the boats and sit in swings. We also found a historical marker for President Andrew Jackson's mother in one of the small parks. After some more visiting, we went to bed.

Thanksgiving Trip - Day 1
We left kind of late this afternoon. Things weren't really packed, but we finally got on our way about 1300. Of course, everyone else was also headed out for the Thanksgiving holiday, so we got hung up near Emporia. After some creative detours, we ended up on a good road towards the south. Actually, we found that despite the heavy I-95 traffic, there was no one on US-301 or US-52. Our drive ended up being pretty nice after all and we drove into Charleston around 1800. Bonnie had us in the Charleston Place Hotel - very fancy! After checking in, we met up with most everyone in the family at an Irish Pub a few blocks from the hotel. It was a nice dinner with lots of family time. We went to bed late after lots more visiting.

Williamsburg, VA (USA)
Just like last year, we were able to spend Veterans Day at Colonial Williamsburg. This time, we took our time so we could watch some of the re-enactments (the auctioneer, the jail house, some militia training). The kids liked the Carriage House. We watched the parade and relaxed in the unexpectedly warm weather...

Niagara Falls, NY (USA)
Didn't leave really early - enjoyed the cool, Fall breezes at the airport. After reluctantly departing the Niagara Lodge, we flew from the Buffalo area to Hampton Roads. Rode all the way home today - this allowed me to get some more grad school work done. Arrived in Virginia at around 1600. Overall, this was a great trip - it makes me think I shouldn't mind the new 30 day trips instead of the old 17 day trips. As long as the weather is good and I have a chance to explore, I will be glad to go to Europe many more times!

Niagara Falls, NY (USA)
We were up early and, after checking out of the Navy Lodge, departed Rota. We made our usual stop in Lajes and were headed west from the Azores quickly. Dropping into St. John's for fuel, we found it was very cold!!! Glad I have my coat... From Newfoundland, we flew on towards Niagara Falls, NY, a place I've been here before, but never in an airplane. The itinerary made for a nice treat, since Charlie got us approved to fly the "Falls Tour" just before landing. This clearance allowed us to fly around at 4000 feet over the falls - everyone got good pictures. After landing at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, we headed towards the Niagara Lodge, one of the nicest looking Air Force Inns (including inside) I've ever seen. Wow! Feeling very spoiled, I expected that we'd just relax in the luxury. However, Mike had set up a dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe for our entire group (20 people). Everything was very fancy - Hard Rock had little place cards with our names and had a special menu for us. After a satisfying meal, we walked around the area near the falls for a few hours after dinner - it was fun. What a great way to end our Detachment!

Rota, Andalucia (Spain)
After checking out of the NAS Sigonella CBQ today, we departed Sicily at around 1630 - on our way towards home. I'd thought we'd be going all the way to the Azores but we got to stop for the night in Rota instead. We landed early enough so that we can get on our way first thing in the morning. Charlie and I will be flying together again tomorrow... Our whole squadron stayed at the Navy Lodge this time - very nice!
Hyeres (France)
Charlie and I had to fly early this morning - despite the fact that it was our day to leave for home. The trip wasn't too complicated - just a run to Naples and then over to Le Palyvestre on the coast. Weather was great - no delays (not even a slot time in Naples)! Had some trouble with language (no one wants to speak English in that part of France) and flight clearance leaving Hyeres, but it all worked out in the end. Back to Sicily around 1430 - the other crew was waiting with our (already packed) bags and the plane was ready to fly again in an hour...

Gambino Winery, Sicily (Italy)
Gary has been telling me for years that we needed to go over to this winery (near Taormina). We filled up both vans with everyone we could fit (20 guys). When we arrived at the winery, it was hard to get the fully-loaded vans up the hill, but we finally did. The winery staff was waiting for us and seated us at a table for 20. I had a great time sampling the wines with local produce, meats and cheeses. We stayed for several hours and almost everyone bought a case of wine before we left. Had a little trouble finding our way home, but everyone made it eventually. This ranks as one of the awesome experiences of traveling. To be honest, I never really wanted to go to a winery before today. But I'm a believer now...

Patti, Sicily (Italy)
Drove up to Patti again today. I always end up taking orders from everyone for china - they never seem to want to come themselves... Took the long way (around the West side of Etna). Found a pretty view of the terrain - complete with statue of Jesus on a little hill - near Cesaro. Drove through a national forest and saw the Patti/Tindari coast line from the top of the ridge. Found some good seconds and was going to leave, but thought it would be nice to say "hi" to Mr. Caleca. Met him and thanked him for the good dishes for our family! Then drove back towards Catania through the mountains. Stopped at the Gole Alcantara (Alacantara Gorge). Pretty. Back to the coast for a quick drive home. No problem on the autostrada - good views of Taormina.

Souda Bay, Crete (Greece)
Spent a relaxing morning in the hotel - unwinding from last night... Met Charlie and John for a late breakfast. Great view of Chania again from the balcony. Took off just after 1400 on the way back to Sicily - no problems on the flight. Had a good dinner with the rest of the group tonight at Bon Gustaio.

Platanias, Crete (Greece)
I've been hoping to come here for the night for awhile... Many times when I have landed in Souda Bay, the handler (Nick) has told me I need to stay and enjoy the food and culture. So I finally took him up on the offer! After we landed, Nick told us where we should go for a great time. We stayed in the Royal Sun hotel - overlooking Chania. Had a few drinks with John and Charlie at the bar and then got a cab to the town of Platanias. I had never thought of coming down this way before - it was worth the trip. It is a resort for Scandanavian and English tourists and they were still out on the beaches (most everyone else would think it was too cold...). We spent most of the day there and then walked back to Agia Marina for dinner at a restaurant that Nick had recommended. It was called "Italiana" (Italian Restaurant). When we walked in, I asked for Mr. Costas and he came out - the manager! It turns out, he is Nick's (at the airport) cousin - there are four Nick's in their family because they are all named for their paternal grandfather (a tradition here). We sat down at a table within 20 feet of the ocean (great view overlooking the Bay of Chania). "Restaurant Nick" told us that all the wine we wanted was on the house (a good start) and then asked us what kind of food we would like. We said we wanted something authentically Greek and he brought out little sample plates. All the while, he brought some delicious local wine, bread and olive oil (all, as it turns out, made at his father's vinyard). "Restaurant Nick" kept coming back to our table and sat with us a few times. We had one of the best meals I have eaten - certainly one of the most memorable! When dinner was done, Nick sat with us at the table (most of the tourists had left) and drank ouzo (also from his father's vinyard). After many toasts (with the call "Yamas"), we got ready to leave. Our bill was too small for such an experience (four hours!), but we made sure we let Nick know how much we appreciated his hosting us. "Airport Nick" never made it to see us - his grandmother died tonight... Later, we took a cab back to Platanias and enjoyed an evening of drinks and fun at some of the good pubs there. Home very late...

Sembach (Germany)
Had a chance to fly up to Germany this morning for a tour of the weather office in Sembach. I told the other guys to bring some Italian wine to trade with the locals. While I was in Sembach, they got a tour of a local local liquor store - they picked up some good stuff (including Kolsch - see JUL 1986). Meanwhile, I was treated like a VIP and given the five star tour of operations at the weather office. It was really something and I'll have a lot of good things to write about when I get home (boss wants a good explanation of how things work). Flight home was good - we got approved to go to Souda tomorrow. No takers in the group, though - Charlie is mad that people won't take advantage of these situations... I guess everyone wants to hang around in Sigonella (????). Tonight we had a late cook-out and tried out the beer we had bought. I think I like the Kolsch now (I guess it takes 20 years to acquire a taste for it...).

Erice, Sicily (Italy)
I have never known anyone to go here, but I recently learned that there was a "Norman City on a hill near Trapani." Some photos showed it like a city in the clouds. In the end, I can truly say I agree. Mike and I walked around the city for several hours - in sunshine and clouds. There were amazing churches with spectacular sculptures and artwork. There were cobblestone streets and castle ramparts. We had a nice lunch and had some drinks on a bluff overlooking Trapani. I would definitely return here!
Segesta, Sicily (Italy)
I had seen this Greek Temple on many TV shows and heard about its beauty, but visiting it made me even more impressed. While Agrigento has lots of well preserved temples along a high ridge, this temple was spectacular in its silent solitude in a deep valley. From all angles, this was very picturesque.

Rota, Andalucia (Spain)
Charlie made it into town early yesterday (while we were still gone), so he was raring to fly around noon today. We had a good flight - Sicily to Crete to Rota. Along the way, we saw some good scenery: Etna, Chania, Las Palmas and Ibiza. Our mission ended for the night in Spain and we got rooms at the Naval Station CBQ for the night. Luckily, we had some time to go into town for a late dinner. Great to be in Spain!

Frankfurt (Germany)
Woke at 0400, checked out of the Hodja Inn (Air Force Inns) and left Incirlik at 0500. Still dark almost all the way to Frankfurt. Landed early in the morning - and promptly set off all the noise alarms. I guess this wouldn't be a big deal around here on a weekday, but we had the misfortune of making a lot of noise with our engines on a Saturday before 0700L. Still, after lots of threats (directed at us) in German, we got on our way home. Intercepted again by the Swiss over the Alps - got pictures this time. Home (at Signonella) by 1000. Took a nap for several hours and then found some more of the guys. Eventually, went out to dinner with everyone at Valentino's. John and some of the others leave in the morning.

Incirlik (Turkey)
Worked very hard on my graduate school paper today. I really didn't expect to have this much time on the ground, so I'm glad I brought my laptop at all. Got a lot of good writing done and used the wireless internet to finish up some class discussion. Susan also has lots of class work, so it was good to have someone around to keep me from wanting to go across the street to the water park again... John and Julius came back from shopping late in the day and we all went out to dinner. I also found some good shops for souvenirs. One more night in the Hodja Inn! We'll be leaving very early...

Incirlik (Turkey)
We were supposed to leave today, but we learned we'll be held here while our passengers complete some important work. That's OK with me because I like the Hodja Inn! We actually won't leave until the 16th. I found out that there is a water park across the street from my hotel and spent a lot of the afternoon there. Hardly anyone else was around - their loss...

Incirlik (Turkey)
After checking out of the Swisshotel this afternoon, we left Ankara at around 1800 - bound for Incirlik. We landed at 1900 and checked into the Hodja Inn (Air Force Inns). This was my first chance to stay the night in this interesting place: usually, I just pass through here. The area near our lodging was pleasant - with a water park across the street. This place has lots of great shopping and restaurants - all within a few miles from where we are staying. I look forward to exploring tomorrow morning...

Ankara (Turkey)
Today, I took one of the more memorable trips I have taken. Flew up from Sicily in the morning and, when we were flying over Switzerland, got intercepted by Swiss F-18s. That was cool. We landed in Frankfurt and picked up our passengers on time. John and Julius flew the flight down to Ankara while I worked on my grad school homework. When we arrived at our lodging, a Swisshotel, it was clear that we would be the only ones here for the night. I took a tour of all of the facilities and learned that they had a Turkish Bath (called a Hamam) available for only 50 Euros. While everyone else went out for Mexican food (?), I got the best sauna, steam bath, massage and hard rub down that I could ever have imagined. The whole experience was kind of mind-numbing, and I nearly fell asleep a few times. When it was over, they put me in a cool room where I could relax. It was quiet and cool. I went to dinner (at Cafe Swiss, the hotel restaurant) and met the manager, who told me she was just wrapping up the construction and evaluation stages (I guess it was new). What an interesting career - build the hotel, develop the amenities and then move to another new hotel! Sounds like a good business...

Ramstein (Germany)
Only had to fly up to Germany and back today, so we took advantage of our stop and got some good stuff at the store. Met some nice guys when we landed who told us about some good shopping opportunities... Weather was great in both directions - saw the Alps and Cote d'Azur.

Warsaw (Poland)
Woke up early and, after checking out of the Scandic Copenhagen, headed back to the airport. Had some problems in Copenhagen with our plane, but eventually got out of there. Flight down to Poland was interesting - I've never been in this part of Eastern Europe. When we landed, I had some time at the airport - enough to run to the Duty Free shop. They had great souvenirs - chocolate, beautifully colored eggs and boxes and more. It was difficult to understand any of the words or money here - I needed some more time in this interesting country! We flew from Warsaw over to Germany for one last passenger drop. No time for a visit to the beer store, but I hope to get that chance later... Home in Sicily by 2000.

Copenhagen (Denmark)
Had a good flight up to Copenhagen. When we were trying to clear security to get to our hotel, one of the guys ended up getting caught with a knife! What an idiot! I was surprised that anyone would think they could have a knife in an airport, but the security folks simply took it away. Serves him right, but I missed my tour of the beer factory in the process. Still, it is a real treat to be able to spend the night in this amazing city! After checking into our hotel (the Scandic Copenhagen), I walked along the streets and gardens with Doc. The famous statue of the Little Mermaid was not as impressive as I had thought (lots of industrial buildings in the photos), but the parks and interesting architecture made up for it. We saw lots of evidence of Hans Christian Anderson, a huge park called Tivoli Gardens, and spent some time roaming around the shopping and restaurant districts along the canals. Had some coffee and snacks later with Karl - he's been off exploring on his own. Walked back to the hotel via some souvenir shops - interesting visit!

Souda Bay, Crete (Greece)
Another routine flight to Crete and back. Saw my friend, Nick, at the airport. He actually asked me if I was Greek. When I said no - but that my Grandmother was Italian - he made the comment "Same blood, same family." I told him we'd try to return for an overnight in Souda this month - he promised to show us around...

Rota, Andalucia (Spain)
Beautiful morning - wish we could have stayed... After checking out of the Mid-Atlantic Lodge (Air Force Inns), we flew over from Terceira to Rota. Once fueled up, we continued to Sicily with no problems. (arrived in early afternoon). Peter and Max met us and told us they wanted to have dinner in Siracusa. It was great to go down to the waterfront and relax with such nice weather. Usually, our groups are like ships passing in the night - we never do this kind of thing. We had around 10 guys at dinner and stayed well into the evening. The other guys leave tomorrow - and they said there won't be much flying for us this month...

Terceira, Azores (Portugal)
Departed NAS Oceana in the morning and headed towards Europe. Stopped for passengers in Camp Springs (MD) and then for fuel in St. Johns, Newfoundland. In the end, it was a better trip to the Azores this time than last spring (see MAR 2006) - the flight over to Terceira was uneventful. We arrived early in the evening and checked into the Mid-Atlantic Lodge (Air Force Inns). Had dinner at the "Top of the Rock" with Doc H - it'll be fun to have him along. Everyone in very good spirits. Weather in Europe will be great this time - I love the Mediterranean in the early Fall...

St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador (Canada)
Because of our tough day yesterday, my boss was very happy that we had only one leg to get home today. Flew down to Norfolk in the afternoon and, with the time changes, got home before 1900. Turned out to be a good trip!

Sigonella, Sicily (Italy)
Our parts were delivered last night. Before I knew that, I was planning to spend most of the day working on my term paper. Without talking to me, Steve and Jon worked our return flight for this afternoon. It ended up being a good thing, though, since we we flew all the way to St. John's for the night. We stopped in Shannon for fuel and switched crews. I love staying in St. Johns! We got rooms at the Murry Premises again, too...

Sigonella, Sicily (Italy)
We got ready early so we could take off without the hot sun. Delays with our passengers, but still made it out OK. We had signs of a maintenance problem when we arrived at the aircraft, but it wasn't until we were flying the leg to Rota that we realized there was a major problem. Diverted into Sigonella and started working on our part... Could be a day or so to finish the work.

(Qatar)
Didn't sleep much, but it wasn't my turn to fly this morning... Got some good sleep on the way to Crete. Then flew from there to Qatar. First time in this country - dark when we arrived. Found out we'll be in tents again. Complex was interesting - there was a big tent there called "The Bra." Bathrooms very far away...

Rota, Andalucia (Spain)
Left with Jon and Steve this morning - bound for Europe! Had a great flight to Newfoundland (I flew) and then got to sleep on the way to Spain. Went out for dinner in the little town of Rota - had a good time.

Albuquerque, NM (USA)
[woke up in the Wyndham Albuquerque Hotel at International Sunport (checked out at 0930) - flying with Julius - itinerary uncertain but orders said Capital (IL) - we flew back to NAS Norfolk by the end of the day and I was home in Virginia Beach soon afterwards]

Albuquerque, NM (USA)
[flying with Julius - itinerary uncertain but my orders said Cherry Point (NC), El Centro (CA) on the way to an overnight in the Wyndham Albuquerque Hotel at International Sunport - we had a rental car reserved (from Advantage) but I don't think we needed it due to our late arrival and a ride to the hotel from the airport]

Fort Worth, TX (USA)
Slept well at the hotel (Courtyard Fort Worth West) and didn't get up until around 1000. After that, I drove over to the nearby mall with Ray. Bought some clothes (I only had brought enough for one day...). Next, I went over to the genealogy library again. Had lunch at the Applebee's near the hotel. Got a call around 1400 that we were fixed but that we needed a maintenance flight before we can leave. I raced back to the hotel and checked out (1405). The FCF went OK - whew! Left my car at Base Operations (Enterprise picked it up at 1800) and we left NAS JRB Fort Worth (Carswell) at around 1600. Our four flight east was uneventful and we arrived in Hampton Roads by around 2000L. Overall, an interesting trip!

Fort Worth, TX (USA)
While resting in my room at the Courtyard Fort Worth West this morning, I learned that we would get our rescue team and a new pilot tonight. Not sure how long it will take to get the aircraft fixed, though. Meanwhile, I picked up a rental car from the nearby Enterprise (0915) and took some of the guys (most were still sleeping) over to the mall. Prior to dropping them off, I'd found out there was a good library for genealogy research down the road and I spent a little while there. Took a break for lunch at a good burger place and also got a haircut nearby. Later, I drove around Lake Worth. It sure is hot - probably hotter than the Middle East. I didn't think it could be that bad and everyone always says "its a dry heat." But sheeesh... Arrived back to the hotel in time for dinner with the guys. Had some more drinks at the hotel tonight - and welcomed the rescue crew and replacement pilot from the pub. From what they told me, it sounds like they'll be working on the plane all day tomorrow...

Fort Worth, TX (USA)
Was scheduled for a line mission today that provided a quick flight around the country today. Despite the best planning, though, it turned out a little differently than I thought it would. After departing Norfolk, our first stop was at NAS Brunswick. I let some of the guest pilots fly in my place - that made them very happy. We had good subsequent legs through Willow Grove and Camp Springs. Airborne after the last stop, one of the passengers came to talk to me about a "hole in the wing." It turned out that it was a hole in the spoiler - not quite as bad. Still, it meant that we were grounded as soon as we landed in Fort Worth... I've never stayed there for the night and we hadn't made any previous lodging arrangements. While our crew was coordinating with Maintenance Control back in Virginia, I reserved some rooms at the Courtyard Fort Worth West for everyone (points for my Marriott Rewards Card!). Jack told me he couldn't stay, so he ended up buying plane tickets to fly back to Norfolk. After checking into our hotel rooms (2130), we found out that the bar in the hotel only stays open until 2100. One guy in our group convinced the girl behind the counter to stay open - of course, that decision had something to do with us buying a lot more drinks.... I went to bed around midnight. We'll see how long it takes to get "rescued"...

Montreal Trip - Day 15
Left Frederick at around 1000 and drove down into West Virginia - Nicky asked why. I told her it was a secret but eventually revealed that this detour took us into Harpers Ferry, a place I wanted to show the kids. We arrived at around lunch time - it was a nice day, breeze down the Potomac. We took part in a National Park Service tour and participated in family skit pretending to be people who lived here in the 1850s. We found white blazes for the Appalachian Trail and followed them to a metal bridge that was attached to a railroad trestle that crossed the Potomac River. We made our way across and then hiked along the north bank of the river. We saw some rafters lazily entering the Potomac from the Shenandoah River side - it looked like fun! After we'd had fun for a while, we returned to the car - it was getting hot and I needed to be headed back to work. Reluctantly, we got on the road again. We took the scenic route through the Shenandoah Valley and parts of the Piedmont. As we approached Richmond, I took the kids by the Pocahontas State Park. They had lots of bike trails and it looked like it might be a nice place to try some camping someday. We continued south of Richmond and drove along the James River, where we passed lots of plantations just before sunset. These beautiful homes aren't far from home, so it might be worth a revisit. Got back to Virginia Beach by around 2000. Great trip!

Montreal Trip - Day 14
We woke up pretty early - I have to be at work soon! We continued on I-81, through Pennsylvania. We ended up heading down towards Gettysburg on US-15. I wanted to see a monument that I read about recently: there was a soldier in the battle (Amos Huddleston) who was mortally wounded. He crawled into town and died in a vacant lot. He was found the next day, clutching a small photograph of his children. Local people circulated copies of the pictures throughout the North and his family was eventually located. When we arrived in Gettysburg, we got some directions and found a little stone marker on the site where Amos was found. Later, we drove down towards Emmitsburg, MD. We drove up to Marymount - there is a huge statue of Mary on the hill and a shrine. We also discovered a memorial to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and walked around in the area where she lived. We spent the night in Frederick.

Montreal Trip - Day 13
We checked out of the Four Points by Sheraton on Rue Sherbrooke at 1010. After stopping to see the ruins of old Saint Ann's Church (Coogan family parish), we drove out of Montreal around 1100. We continued on the north side of the Saint Lawrence and decided to head down towards the Thousand Islands. Along the way, we stopped for poutine again at PFK. When we reached Morrisburg, we learned about a historic park (Upper Canada Village) that told the history of old British Canada. When we got there, we were surprised to learn that they were doing a reenactment of a War of 1812 battle at Crysler’s Farm Battlefield Park (next door)! We decided to stay there for a short time and were treated to finely dressed military "actors" marching and playing fifes and drums. The weather was great, and the river was right behind the action. At around 1600 we drove down to see some of the Locks that are used in the river - the kids liked watching the huge ships moving up and down. By around 1700 we were in the Thousand Islands region. We explored some of the small vacation villages on both sides of the river - it looked like a great place to spend the summer! We crossed back into the US before dark and Nicky managed to get us the VAT rebate - this is the first time this has worked. We continued south on I-81 and it got dark soon after. We drove as far as we could and ended the night in central New York State.

Montreal Trip - Day 12
We were going to leave today, but we learned about a special program that is held at night at Notre Dame du Montreal - another church the Coogans attended. In the morning, I showed Nicky and the kids where the old city was (Vieux Montreal) and dropped back in for a little more genealogy before I met up with them for lunch. By then, Nicky had bought us tickets for the show - held later that afternoon. When we got there, the church was dark and the walls were shrouded in curtains. We got some head-phones that were designed to present the show in English. When it began, there were lights coming from all directions and different parts of the church were revealed as the history of Catholic Montreal was told. At the finale, the entire alter and artwork were uncovered and we were stunned at the beauty. Nicky said this was the best thing she has seen on the trip - very moving and a great experience. We walked around the church afterwards and took some pictures where Owen and Ann O'Hare might have stood when they were married here in 1843. We had a late dinner and went shopping in Chinatown. We also enjoyed one last evening in the Jazz Festival. Back in our hotel (Four Points by Sheraton on Rue Sherbrooke), the kids talked until quite late about how fun the trip had been. We are all sad that we'll be leaving in the morning...

Montreal Trip - Day 11
I got up early and walked over to work at the Montreal Archives. Most everyone speaks French, but there were a few nice ladies there who were also working on their genealogy. They helped me find things and, after some searching, I located records of Owen and his family. I found two new children (they died as infants) and nailed down some other loose ends. Things were very organized and I spent nearly the whole day there. Meanwhile, Nicky and the kids took the subway over to the Biodome - a nature adventure park. They came back with lots of great stories about how much fun they had. After a short rest at the hotel (Four Points by Sheraton on Rue Sherbrooke), we walked down to Chinatown. We found a great restaurant - very inexpensive - and spent several hours sampling their food. We walked around the Jazz Festival again - fun!

Montreal Trip - Day 10
It appears we have chosen Montreal wisely - they are having their Jazz Festival this week!!! What a great time to be here! Things don't get really going until late, so we kept to my plan of visiting the old town. We drove around Griffintown and discovered the homes have all been bulldozed to make room for huge parking lots. The lots seem to be used to store cars that come off the ships. I guess this place used to flood a lot and the whole area was diseased and slum-like. The roads are still there, so we found the blocks where the Coogans used to live. The Cote des Neiges Cemetery was great - the stones all had markings on them (easy to find) and the whole place was very organized. We found the stones of Owen and his children - he was the first of us to come over from Ireland. The kids seemed interested... At the end of the day, we went back to the hotel (Four Points by Sheraton on Rue Sherbrooke) and dropped off our car. We then spent the rest of the evening walking around the Jazz Festival. There were some great performances and the whole environment was relaxed and safe. The kids have really never spent any time in a "sky-scraper" city, so they ate the whole experience up! It will be a great few days!

Montreal Trip - Day 9
We checked out of the Holiday Inn Select, Quebec Centre-Ville at 1010 and headed towards Montreal. To get there, we used a route on the north side of the Saint Lawrence River. When we were nearly half way, we started to see the huge and beautiful shrine of Saint Anne. We had to take a look! It seems to be relatively new and is amazing inside - awe inspiring. This Saint Anne is apparently the Patron Saint of Canada. There was a "Stations of the Cross" with life-size people on a very steep hill. After we had seen this beautiful place, we drove across to the Isle d'Orleans and toured the farmlands and open air produce markets. It was very small and there were few people. At the end of the day, we made it to Montreal - just in time for a huge rain storm! We had a reservation at the Four Points by Sheraton on Rue Sherbrooke but, when we arrived (1900), it was very hard to get a place to park. Nicky and the kids got kind of scared that we wouldn't be able to get out of the car. I was double parked for a bit but eventually parallel parked my way into the "quiet" area of the check-in zone. Luckily, the hotel had some great service (done with check-in by 1920) and we soon forgot about needing a car again... Tomorrow, I am going to explore the old town and check out the Cemetery "Cote des Neiges" for Coogan ancestors...

Montreal Trip - Day 8
We woke up early at our hotel (Holiday Inn Select, Quebec Centre-Ville) to make sure we were one time for a tour (by bus) around Old Quebec City. We got to get out in a few pretty places and the tour bus driver took turns talking in English and French for the others in our group. He showed us some good places to eat and spend more time. We took his advice and had a delicious crepe meal (entire dinner was crepes of some kind). We looked around the old village and learned that we had arrived near the date of Samuel Champlain's birthday - I think he is one of the founders of Quebec City. Things were very festive and the weather was perfect. Nicky said she could stay here forever - "why go to Montreal at all?" Well, that is why we came, to see Montreal - where our Coogan family used to live...

Montreal Trip - Day 7
After checking out of the Shelburne Days Inn, we headed north. It's been a week on vacation and now we are headed into Canada! Due to Canada Day celebrations, we needed to wait an extra day to get an affordable hotel. Initially, I figured that Quebec City would be a good start to the experience (more French!) and we crossed the border on Grand Isle. We then drove along the Saint Lawrence River (south side) and found out that Kentucky Fried Chicken is called PFK here. They have this great meal called "poutine" - fries, sour cream, cheese all mixed. I know it sounds bad for you, but it tastes good! We made it to Ville de Quebec at around 1500 and located our hotel (Holiday Inn Select, Quebec City Centre-Ville). After checking in (1540), we took advantage of the great weather and explored the area near our hotel. From our window, we had a great view of St. Roch's Church (more of a Cathedral). Everything is definitely French. We'll have a tour tomorrow!

Montreal Trip - Day 6
After a nice night in the Shelburne Days Inn, we arrived at the reason I'd brought the family this way: the Morgan Horse Farm (UVM property)! We got there pretty early and toured the place - Mollie was in heaven. It was actually kind of hard to drag her away! After some lunch, we drove East to a park with Robert Frost Poems along an interpretive trail (apparently the inspiration for most of his work). We saw some beautiful water falls and then we headed up to Stowe. I was planning to stop at the Ben and Jerry's factory already, so that was nice, but we also found some cider and maple sugar farms that really got Nicky and the kids excited. We also explored the Trapp Family Lodge - would be a nice place to stay someday... As dusk approached, we were going back to the hotel. Just before we got back on the interstate, we saw that Stowe was having a July 4th Fair. As we parked and were planning to go in, a local boy stopped us and asked if we wanted some free tickets that his family couldn't use - wow! He showed us where to go and took us to one of the local firemen who were running the fair (and fireworks display). There were pony rides, cotton candy, pretzels, burgers and dogs - just like the kind of fair you always wanted to attend. And we were right underneath the fireworks when they began (a little TOO close for Mollie!). Afterwards, we drove back to our hotel in Shelburne. What a night!

Montreal Trip - Day 5
I was thinking about taking the kids to Fort Ticonderoga this morning, but it became clear that our visit with Clarence and Wilma had used up some of the time we'd need for that excursion. So, still keeping our itinerary a secret, I worked our way up to Shelburne, VT. Nicky and I had been here before, but without the kids. I figured they would enjoy a visit to the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory - and I was right. We also checked out a Morgan Horse Museum in Shelburne. I found a hotel (Shelburne Days Inn) and we explored the Burlington and Shelburne Farm area of Lake Champlain. We had so much fun that I figured the kids would like another day in the area. So, after returning to our hotel, I added a night to our reservation. We ate dinner at Friendly's (always nice) and made plans for another day in the area.

Montreal Trip - Day 4
After a pleasant morning with Stephanie and Joe, we drove out towards New York State. I called Clarence, an internet "relative" who has kept in touch with us for nearly a decade. He told us to meet him near the Kingston, NY, exit. When we got together, he and his wife Wilma treated us like their kids. They took us out to dinner at their favorite restaurant. When the kids talked about wanting a break from the car, Clarence suggested that we come with him to an old summer resort that he has enjoyed since the 1930s. When we got to Williams Lake, the kids were more than happy - there were canoes, rowboats, old-time swimming and beach games. We spent the rest of the day as Clarence's guests (people thought we were his grand-kids). It started to get a little rainy around sunset, so Clarence and Wilma insisted that we not get back on the road yet. He told us the hotel we should stay in, and then had us back to his house for a cookout with him and his friends. Remember, all we shared before today was the same surname (and some job related similarities). When we left tonight, the kids felt like "Uncle Clarence" and "Aunt Wilma" were close relatives. I must say, I am humbled by their generosity and heartfelt friendship. We feel truly re-charged and ready for the next part of our trip!!!

Montreal Trip - Day 3
We enjoyed a late checkout and then drove up to Sandy Hook (Gateway National Seashore). It was an interesting place because you can see New York City from there and they have some great beaches. The kids learned a lot about the Lifesaving Corps and many beach animals. When we were done with the park (complete with a picnic lunch), we drove over towards Florham Park to visit Nicky's cousin, Stephanie, and her family. They treated us to a cookout and we spent the night. The girls were very excited because they got to stay with some little cousins on a "sleepover!"

Montreal Trip - Day 2
After a pleasant evening at the Holiday Inn Bethany Beach, we were up and about early because we wanted to get a spot on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. We had a drive a bit to reach the landing but I'd made a reservation for 1115 departure. We arrived at the recommended check-in window (1015) and were pleasantly surprised that the place wasn't too crowded - regardless, we were glad to be in the front of the line. The kids had never been on a big boat like this - and had never before left sight of land. They looked funny walking around and getting their "sea legs." After we got off the ferry, we drove through old Cape May, NJ. We had lunch at an ice cream place and then drove up along the Jersey Shore. I kept it a secret - we were very close to the Monmouth Battlefield (of Molly Pitcher fame). When we stopped, Mollie was so proud to see that someone with her name was so famous as to have a museum. It was nice to enjoy the cooler summer weather. As it got dark, we stumbled on a family pizza joint and ate a nice dinner. We found lodging nearby - we got to rent a whole house!

Montreal Trip - Day 1
We got a late start and by the time we made it to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, it was pouring with thunder and lightning. However, when we emerged on the Eastern Shore (Cape Charles), the sun was shining and our whole outlook changed. After passing the missile launch site at Wallops Island, our first stop was Chincoteague Island. Actually, the park is on Assateague Island - just beyond the more populated Chincoteague. The kids did the Junior Ranger program again and we actually found some wild ponies while we were on a nature walk. It's too bad that we weren't staying nearby, since the beach was very inviting. We had dinner in an old restaurant on the harbor in Chincoteague. As it got dark, we drove up the coast into Maryland and saw the bustling lights of Ocean City. One more bonus for our first day of vacation: we got a free night at a Holiday Inn Express (in Bethany Beach, Delaware) with our Priority Club points. We also did a little exploring in Rehoboth Beach before bed.
Sunday, June 18, 2006
Williamsburg, VA (USA)
Used our passes again today at Water Country USA. Kids like that place a lot, so we had a really good time. Lots of great rides: Big Daddy Falls, Crush-n-Gusher and the big wave pool. Weather was nice and we stayed late.

Brunswick, ME (USA)
This morning, I checked out of the Naval Station Rota Navy Gateway Inn, turned in my rental car and met up with the rest of my crew (flying with Karl and Micah). After all the delays we've faced, we finally got a nice early start... Our first leg was a flight to the Azores (Terceira) - we got gas there and then continued to Brunswick, Maine. We had a great turn through there and, after another good flight to Hampton Roads (arrived at 1500L), finished our long mission. Once my paperwork was finished, I called Nicky - she and the kids met me for dinner at Number 1 China Buffet on Granby Street (our favorite restaurant in Norfolk). What a trip...
Saturday, June 10, 2006
Sevilla, Andalucia (Spain)
Woke up in my room at the Naval Station Rota Navy Gateway Inn at around 0900 and tried to get a rental car. There weren't any available then but I later (1130) heard back from ATA Rent a Car (at Base Operations) - they'd found a car if I still wanted it! When I called the other guys (Micah and Karl), I discovered that none of them wanted to go. Later, I learned that they had gone out again last night after I went to bed. This was one of those rare opportunities that I could not let pass without making the most of it! Got a little help from the concierge, who printed out a Google map for me. Even better: one of the enlisted crew (Hanscom) agreed to go with me. Armed with basic information, we quickly drove to the city of Sevilla (Seville). We were hoping to visit the Cathedral where Columbus was buried but it was closed! Instead, we took a tour of the Alcazar - it had a great exhibit on an early Muslim writer who traveled in Spain during the Ninth Century. We walked in the gardens of King Ferdinand and Isabella and stood in the room where Columbus presented his discoveries from the New World. The whole city was very interesting - I would definitely go there again! Hanscom and I later drove around Rota, looking for a good seafood restaurant. We ended up finding one (part Italian, part seafood) near some beautiful beach resorts and had a delicious dinner It was a great end to a great day!

Puerto de Santa Maria, Andalucia (Spain)
After a fitful sleep at the Naval Station Rota Navy Gateway Inn, I met my crew and we headed to the airfield. Just before our planned departure time, we learned that our aircraft was broken. After some phone calls to home plate, determined we weren't going to be leaving anytime soon. Everyone was still pretty tired, so we all went to our rooms (they let us check back in without delay) and took a nap. Around 1700, Karl, Micah, Rafael and I got cabs and went over to Puerto de Santa Maria. We walked around for several hours and ate a late dinner (2000). We stayed at the restaurant until almost midnight. After that, we went back out on the street and saw tons of people! I guess things really get cranking around 2330 here... I was surprised to see so many people Brenna and Erin's age, though. Found out when I got back to my room that we won't be leaving tomorrow, either. Asked a couple of the guys if they wanted to go out tomorrow - we'll see... Got to bed around 0230.

Rota, Andalucia (Spain)
This was one of those days that just would not end! Woke up this morning, planning to fly to Spain. Checked out of the Al Dana Resort (Novotel by Accor) but, when we arrived at the plane, Karl told me we'd gotten tasking for additional flights to another location. The revised itinerary was possible but absolutely guaranteed we'd be unable to stay on our schedule. After some uncomfortable wrangling with the local Navy authorities - on Karl's part, not mine - we finally departed Bahrain for Crete. Somehow, my boss back home heard about Karl's arguments with the scheduler - we found out he wasn't happy when we landed at Souda Bay. When I went to check the weather, I ran into my old buddy, Geoff, and helped him find some publications he needed. After Karl talked to our squadron (glad I wasn't on that call), Micah and I flew the next leg. Meanwhile, Karl went in the back of the plane to "get his story straight". After departing Crete, we had to stop in Sicily for fuel. Unfortunately, we then got delayed for a long time waiting for some passengers. Ended up catching up to Geoff again (his crew had stopped in Sardinia) when we arrived in Spain. We checked into the Naval Station Rota Navy Gateway Inn and I went to bed kind of early - very tired...

Manama (Bahrain)
My room in the Al Dana Resort (Novotel by Accor) was great and I slept quite well. When I met up with other members of the crew, we went out exploring. One highlight was walking around in the Souk - the experience was a very interesting mix of cheap Chinese products and local wares. There were also lots of spices, foods and drinks from the area. Gold was plentiful, too! I didn't buy much, but I tried a candy that was really good [when I got home, the kids called them "chocolate rocks"].

Manama (Bahrain)
Started late again... Slept (from previous day) from 0730 until around 1600. After a late checkout from the NSA Souda Bay Billeting Office, we returned to our aircraft (flying with Karl and Micah). We were able to depart from Crete just after dark and flew Bahrain (arrived around 2200L). Had some trouble getting to the hotel, but it was worth the wait - we got put up at the Al Dana Resort (Novotel by Accor)! This was the second time I have gotten to stay in Manama and these digs are very nice...

Souda Bay, Crete (Greece)
After our late night arrival in the Azores, we didn't get started until really late. We checked out of the Mid-Atlantic Lodge (Air Force Inns) and departed the Lajes Air Base by 1500L. From Terceira, we flew to Rota, Spain (fuel stop) and then on to Crete. It was dark nearly all the way (flying with Karl and Micah). Finally got to my hotel (NSA Souda Bay Billeting) room on Crete at around 0700L...

Dover, DE (USA)
[Overseas Mission] Had a long day - and we knew it before it started... First had to fly down to Corpus Christi, TX, to pick some guys up for a trip to Europe. We (Karl and Micah) then flew to Dover AFB to get gas. All of this CONUS flying didn't change the fact that we were supposed to be in Spain by tomorrow... Our flight to the Azores (Terceira) was long, but we made without much difficulty. Fortunately, the weather wasn't even that bad, either. I was quite tired by the time I checked into the Mid-Atlantic Lodge (Air Force Inns) - it was already the middle of the night. I fell asleep immediately.

Brunswick, ME (USA)
We took off from Brunswick NAS after midnight but had a good flight to Hampton Roads. We were on deck in Norfolk by 0100. It took a lot of time to complete the paperwork before I could go home. Exhausted but feeling good about my overseas adventure! (Even better, I got the next day off from work...)

Terceira, Azores (Portugal)
After a good night's rest in the Naval Station Rota Gateway Inn, I finally woke up at around 1100 (!). I then went shopping in the town of Rota and had lunch. Once I was back on base and had met up with the rest of the crew, we got ourselves in the air by 1600. On the way home, we stopped for fuel in Lajes (Azores) and Brunswick. At the latter spot (Maine), we got delayed on the ground until after midnight...

Rota, Andalucia (Spain)
Slept in my luxurious room at the Al Dana Resort until 0900. Fortunately, I still had time to catch the huge breakfast buffet they have here! Spent a little time this morning by the pool and working on my term paper. Didn't get a chance to explore the city because we had to leave by noon. After we departed Bahrain, we had an uneventful flight to Crete and then another to Rota. Landed in Spain pretty early, so had a chance to go into Rota for the evening. We spent the night at the Naval Station Gateway Inn again. Bed late...

Bahrain (Bahrain)
Didn't get much sleep last night... I woke up at 0300 and never ended up settling down again. I don't believe it was due to having a bad Gateway Inn room - more likely, it was yesterday's long day and the time-zone differences between home and Spain. Ended up eating breakfast at 0330 and staying awake, waiting for the sun to rise... Luckily, our departure time was at 0830. Even better, our destination was Bahrain! I have always heard about how beautiful and international it is and always wanted to see it for myself. I picked up four turkey sandwich box lunches at the NEX Cafe (at the Naval Station) this morning - they also included fruit juices, chips, cookies and some granola bars. After we took off from Rota, our flight over to Crete was good - until Julius had some trouble getting into Souda Bay (they held us up high until really late!). I flew the next leg with Jeff into Bahrain and got to see a lot of cool sights (Egypt, Nile, Red Sea, Bahrain by night). Also got a kick out of listening to the ex-pat Brits who control the airspace near Bahrain... After landing, we arrived at our hotel (Al Dana Resort, by Accor/Novotel) around 1730 - we got to stay in a very nice place on the water. We had a great dinner (with free-flowing beer). Walked around the complex after the sun went down - it was still hot. I'd like to come back to Bahrain and spend a little more time in the future...

Puerto de Santa Maria, Andalucia (Spain)
With the time zone change, we arrived in Rota around 1000. We had a lot to do before we could check into the Gateway in at the Naval Station, so we'll only end up getting charged one night (usually, we have to pay for two when we show up early in the morning...). I was rested, so I convinced Julius to try to go on the train to Sevilla with me. We had no trouble getting to the train station in Puerto de Santa Maria - a pretty coastal town. Unfortunately, the train was not running today! We walked around for several hours - looking in shops, exploring historic places. Had some good beer at a local pub as the Siesta began. Later, we found out that they have some great beaches outside the city. We walked for miles! We got back to town and made it to Meson El Asador for a great Shish-kebab meal, topped off with Liquor de Hierbas (definitely an acquired taste...). I had been here in 2003 - it was fun to pass along the experience to Julius. Back to the room around 1900 so I could get some sleep. Ended up going out for a little while with everyone in Rota - back to room again at 2200...

St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador (Canada)
We had a mission to the Middle East today but weren't scheduled to leave Norfolk until around noon today, despite our best efforts to get permission for an earlier departure. We also encountered a planning problem: we would have been overweight if we tried to leave NAS Norfolk for Canada (due to runway lengths). In an effort to solve this, we flew over to Oceana. Unfortunately, it then took forever for a fuel truck... To try to make up some of the schedule, Jeff suggested we fly all the way to Rota - this was fine with me. Our day didn't really begin until we left Hampton Roads (1900). Flight to St. John's, Newfoundland, was good. After that leg, though, I let Jeff and Julius fly. Meanwhile, I took a nap in the back of the plane. Still flying at midnight...

Spring Break Trip - Day 7
First thing in the morning, we checked out of Fort Belvoir Lodging and left the base for the last time. It was a great place to stay - we'll need to do that again. Leaving Fairfax County, we drove through the city one more time to give the kids one more look, then drove out of town on the southeast side. We then explored along the Potomac River until we stumbled across the Piscataway National Park (it's on a dirt road way back in the woods). We discovered (as most people haven't, I guess, since it was deserted) that they have an old farm setup here - it is run by the Accokeek Foundation. You can walk all around among the animals and in historic farm houses. We spent a few hours here and realized that we were directly across the river from Mount Vernon - great view. It was worth the trip and the kids talked about the turkeys and horses walking around them all the way home. Reluctantly, we departed the park and headed towards home. We used US-301 and US-17 (avoid the traffic) and got home quite late. What a great week of fun with the kids!

Spring Break Trip - Day 6
We woke up this morning (still at Fort Belvoir Lodging) and decided that we wanted a change of pace - it's time for some nature and hiking! With that in mind, we drove up towards Glen Echo, Maryland, and found a nice park called the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historic Park. It was designed (with the help of George Washington) as a way to transport goods from the interior of the new nation down to the ocean (it really didn't work out). We saw lots of turtles, big snakes and birds. The kids enjoyed the warm air and we didn't rush. Later in the day we stopped in to see the home of Clara Barton and took a tour. Brenna is always talking about being a doctor someday - and she has read a few books about Barton. We walked around a park in Glen Echo for a little bit but everything was closed. Just before dark, we drove out to Dulles and visited the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum Annex - lots more aircraft (including a Space Shuttle). The kids liked the tower and radar mockup (you can listen to actual radio communications and watch the screens). We got to watch some flight operations at Dulles. This was my first time there and I liked this addition to the Smithsonian. Dinner at TGIFridays - big hit with the kids! We made it back to Fort Belvoir quite late and did some packing. Only one more day before we have to go home...

Spring Break Trip - Day 5
Our morning on Post at Fort Belvoir was very pleasant again. Once we'd gotten ready, we drove to the National Zoo. What a great time! Mollie loves animals and really had fun looking at all of the different displays. We got to see the new panda baby and lots of elephants. We were probably there for about six hours (the kids seem to have a longer attention span with something like this...). We explored the area near the National Cathedral - there was a lot of construction. Nicky took lots of video of the inside - it is always an impressive building to visit. Dinner was at "The Melting Pot" - a surprise dinner of fondue for the kids. The waiter was great - he threw in a desert of white chocolate fondue since it was the first time the kids ever had this kind of experience - and it wasn't too busy. We were going to drive down to Fairfax anyway, so I stopped in the city on the way back. It was dark, but the Mall was lit well. We parked the car and walked around near the new World War II monument and Lincoln Memorial. The kids think this was cool - to be out late in the dark around all of this cool stuff. They didn't want to leave, but we left around 2200. The kids will sleep well tonight!

Spring Break Trip - Day 4
Our day began on Fort Belvoir again and we were raring to go for another day in our Nation's Capital. We heard yesterday that the Smithsonian Museum of American History will soon be closing for renovations, so we headed over there. They have some great exhibits (the girls liked the information about the Presidents and First Ladies). After a few hours there we walked over to the White House and explored the area of the National Mall near the Washington Monument. The kids worked on their Junior Ranger projects - lots of places to visit. Spent some time having a picnic lunch in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Late in the day visited the Jefferson Memorial and walked along the Tidal Basin near the FDR Memorial again (still some cherry blossoms...). We drove along the Potomac, towards Mount Vernon, on the way to Fort Belvoir and saw a nice sunset. We did leave the Post one more time, though - for dinner at Roy Rogers (burger joint). In our rooms again, the kids went right to sleep. Not much time left for Spring Break but we've seen a LOT!

Spring Break Trip - Day 3
Not an early morning - we spent time enjoying our rooms at Fort Belvoir. The weather is still great! We spent most of the day walking around in Arlington National Cemetery. The kids had never seen the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier or JFK's grave. They were very impressed with the whole experience. We had a great view of the city from the Custis-Lee Mansion and saw the tomb of Pierre L'Enfant (designer of DC city plan). Later, we drove up to Bethesda in the evening and had dinner at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. The restaurant was VERY pricy, but a it was a good experience to try at least once. They offer an option to cook your own meat on a very hot stone - the amount of time you cook it after it is at the table determines the "done-ness". A big downside was that there were no sides included with the meat and the kids menu is not that great. After getting our fill, we drove south again and went to sleep in our comfortable rooms at Fort Belvoir. Another good day!

Spring Break Trip - Day 2
We all had a good night's sleep at the Fort Belvoir Lodging. After getting ready and heading into DC again, we made a point of visiting the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian (first time). Very impressive exhibits - Nicky and the kids really liked it. We later walked around on the Mall. After a quick lunch, we went into the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. We have been here before, but Mollie didn't remember any of it. Lots of great science and exhibits. When the sun went down, we headed back to the Fort Belvoir.

Spring Break Trip - Day 1
Left Virginia Beach early this morning - it's time for Spring Break! Took I-64 and I-95, got off on US-1 so we could reach our lodging at Fort Belvoir. At 1550, we checked in (to make sure things were good) - the place is nice and we have it all week. Kids have a room right next to ours and the doors connect. It was a little rainy, but it was another nice Saturday in Northern Virginia. After making our way into DC (fortunately, not much traffic), we found a good parking spot near the Smithsonian. For the rest of the afternoon, we spent time exploring the Air and Space Museum. They now have SpaceShipOne! Just before dark, I took the kids over the the Franklin Roosevelt Memorial, hoping that they are still doing the Cherry Blossom Festival. Unfortunately, it looks like we may have missed that celebration by a week... After our first fun day, we drove back to Fort Belvoir (cooked food in the room?). There is a lot of fun in store for the kids this week!

Shannon (Ireland)
After a nice morning at the Headland Hotel (Newquay), we flew from St. Mawgen to Shannon (Ireland) for fuel. The flight from Dublin to Newfoundland was uneventful - it was very cold in St. Johns! After getting fuel, we took off for Norfolk and arrived in the late afternoon. Paperwork took a little while, but home before dinner. I made it just in time for the kids' spring break, so we'll leave for a trip tomorrow...

Newquay, England (United Kingdom)
Our Detachment ended today! When I was returning the rental car to the Europcar counter (0920), another member of the Detachment staff told me he'd gotten a ticket in Taormina. Since the violation occurred while I was in the Middle East, I wasn't too worried about the situation. Also, he gave me cash to pay the fine to the rental car company. Still, this "shared" vehicle scenario was bound to lead to some kind of issue eventually... After resolving the issue, I headed to the flight line. Once all our Det equipment and personnel were packed up in our mighty C-9B, we departed Sigonella for home. Unlike our usual, Rota/Lajes/Newfoundland (or Shannon route), this was a very special and unexpected overnight RTB - we were able to stop in Newquay (Cornwall) for about 24 hours! We stayed in the Headland Hotel - an old place on the scenic Cornish coast. It is amazing to see the names on the map around here - they are the same ones from New England that I was used to as a kid. I guess people wanted something to remind them of where they came from... In the afternoon, I requested a traditional Cornish tea (scones and tea with Cornish milk) during Tea Time at the Sand Bar (hotel pub). It was a nice touch! My room, which was quite small, still seemed comfortable as I drifted off to sleep...

Napoli, Campania (Italy)
Left early this morning - sun hadn't made it to sweltering yet - and flew back on the Northern Route. Best visibility of Iran yet. Saw a little of Baghdad suburbs. Great views of Eastern Turkey - including southern mountains of Ararat range. This was the earliest in the day that I've been out this way, so I got to see great ground scenery. Weather OK until just before landing in Naples - thunderstorms nearby... After a pretty quick turn, off for Sicily - home before 1800. Had to rush around to pack and get things ready for our departure tomorrow. I'm glad I prepped a little before we went on the Kuwait trip.

(Kuwait)
Woke around 0330 after a nice sleep at the Capo Inn. We headed to the flight line at Capodichino and were in the air by 0600. Flew across Albania (nice mountains) and stopped in Incirlik for fuel. Back on our way again and took the Iraq route again - glad I had my map. Landed in Kuwait around 1500L (very hot). Stayed in better accommodations this time - even got internet access this time. We'll be here for two nights.

Ercolano [Napoli], Campania (Italy)
We have an important flight tomorrow, so we flew up early to Naples to pre-position. Once we had all the plans worked out for our departure in the morning, we took the Alibus from Capodichino to Piazza Garibaldi and caught a train to Herculaneum. It was buried in much more debris from the AD 79 Vesuvius eruption than Pompeii. I had heard this was actually a more interesting site, and I have to agree. We thought it would cost money, but when we got there they waved us in for free. The fact that the city was buried in mud and ash (we stood at the bottom, where the old ocean front used to be and looked up - has to be 100 feet) preserved the place. We saw where bones from fearful residents were unearthed near the shoreline and walked through relatively complete and intact city blocks (two story homes!). I was very impressed with the spot - it looks like they still have some more excavations to do, too. Had a delicious dinner in town before heading back to NSA Naples (staying in the Capo Inn). Have to wake up early tomorrow, so I went to bed around 2200.

Napoli, Campania (Italy)
Had to fly up to Naples for a "welcome" meeting. It only lasted about an hour. The weather wasn't very nice, so we decided not to stay - hope we have another chance to come here for some exploring before we head back to the States... In Sicily again by 1500.

Souda Bay, Crete (Greece)
Nice day for a quick trip to Greece. Flew over in great weather and landed around 1300. Had time to get some good souvlaki and shop around near the airport. Back on our way before 1430. Spent the afternoon in my room getting ready for our return flight (only a week away!). Dinner at "the Ass Master" (we don't know how to pronounce the real name, but it sounds like that!).

Megara Hyblea, Sicily (Italy)
Jim and I found some amazing scenery today - a town called Megara Hyblea and a fortress on a ridge overlooking Siracusa. At the first location, we even got to talk with a French archaeologist about the excavations.

Souda Bay, Crete (Greece)
We had our first real trip today - a quick run to Souda Bay. I always like going over there - the mountains are pretty, the coast is inviting. I always think about the history, too, and wish I had a chance to stay for the night (see NOV 1998). I've made friends with the handlers here and they always offer to show me around...

Stuttgart (Germany)
Woke this morning (Kelley Barracks in Moehringen) to find that we were scheduled to fly down to Naples to get some people who were stranded by a broken plane. Spent the morning looking around our hotel (found a little package store with beer!). On the aircraft by noon. Flight back to Sicily wasn't too hard and we got in around 2000.

Stuttgart (Germany)
Got here early in the afternoon - nice opportunity for some fun. This was the first time that I have been able to leave the airport. We rode on a bus to the Kelley Hotel (or "Barracks") in Moehringen. Passed by the Daimler Chrysler headquarters during our drive. Later took a train from Landhaus to Charlottenplatz (1830L). It was already dark, but there was a lot of activity in the town square. Gary had found some nice pubs in previous visits, so we checked them out. We had dinner in a restaurant overlooking a narrow street - good beer and brats. Had fun with the guys walking around the city. We just missed a huge demonstration that got out of hand - fire hoses and lots of police. Decided to catch the train from there (Schlossplatz) back to Landhaus before we became a part of of the action (2300L)...

Terceira, Azores (Portugal)
I really didn't want to go, but my boss insisted on taking us out of here and on to Italy. At 0100L, we were on our way again. With the time change, we got to Sicily at 0700L. Unfortunately, all this hurrying only made sure we ended up in the lobby of the hotel - with no rooms reserved (or available). We milled around for several hours and I was able to pick up my rental car at Europcar (1035L). Returning to the CBQ office, I found that things still weren't on track for check-in... Finally, I couldn't take it anymore and asked for ANY room. They obliged, and I grabbed some towels and sheets from one of the maid carts. The room was a sty - beer bottles and trash everywhere - but I cleaned up the bed and caught about five hours of sleep. Woke up late in the afternoon. To make up for all these time zone changes and the mid-day nap, I tried to get on the time zone with dinner at 1800. Went to sleep at 2300. Not the best day, but our Detachment can begin in the morning...

Terceira, Azores (Portugal)
Briefed very late and flew all night to the Azores. Probably the worst weather I have ever seen here: 50 knot crosswinds, driving rain and windshear. Glad to be on the ground - planning to stay - until my boss said we were going to leave as soon as the weather cleared...

We got to visit George Washington's home with the kids on the day of his birthday - it was free. The weather was bad - some amazing accidents all around us on the way up there. The weather turned out great and we enjoyed ourselves a lot. George himself was there and the kids shook his hand. We saw some people working on the farm and toured Mount Vernon. The weather was nice and there weren't too many people there (at first). A very memorable trip!

Outer Banks, NC (USA)
Drove down to the Outer Banks today to see the Wright Brothers monument at Kitty Hawk. [Probably bought National Parks Pass] It was a warm day, actually, and the kids were very impressed with the full size replica of the Wright Flyer. We walked up to the top of the Kill Devil Hills and could see for miles. Had lunch at a restaurant with a huge windmill - seafood. Then we drove over to see the Lost Colony of Roanoke National Park. There was absolutely noone around, so we had a personalized tour from the Ranger. Two more Junior Ranger patches (not just pins!). The kids had fun today - we should come back for some swimming and beach fun...
